What people are saying
A divisive precision platformer praised for its challenge but marred by controller issues.
Many players enjoy the challenging gameplay, describing it as a fun kaizo experience with retro vibes and satisfying difficulty. Some call it a great intro to the genre and a blast from start to finish. [2][3][6][12]
However, numerous players report severe controller issues, including incorrect button mappings, unresponsive D-pads, and no control remapping, which frustrate and hinder gameplay. Some say these problems make the game unplayable or recommend avoiding it until fixed. [10][11][18][19][20][21][22]

24 of 24 · most liked firstHey! Writing as a fan of kaizo hacks but i wanted to make an informative review based on 15 minutes of ATTEMPTING to play this game. As far as the game plays, I was enjoying it! However, I tried 3 different controllers and had the same issues with all 3. (SNES to USB, PS4, Wired Switch Controller) The steam library said partial support for SNES, full support with PS4, and no support for Switch, however all 3 controllers had the exact same issues. (I do not own an XBOX controller but im assuming…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →controls are wonky. With an Xbox controller it says press A but you actually have to press X. Controls menu option in settings does not work at all. Double cursor sometimes, and when you press up or down on the D-Pad in the menu it goes the opposite direction. Gameplay is fun, but controls desperately need to be fixed. Hope to see it fixed soon so I can review it postitively
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun kaizo game, as someone who plays a tooooon of kaizo stuff it's really nice seeing these kinds of games pop up. It's not perfect, some parts are a little janky like music not playing randomly and whatnot, and the final boss is imo not great, but it's definitely a game I'd recommend if you're into kaizo games or platformers in general. Also, the kaizo block on the very last level (especially the one in kaizolike mode) was pure evil and I loved it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Unlinked Mask" is a difficult precision 2D platformer. You have to be a fan of said genre to be able to enjoy this experience to its fullest. Every move, every jump, every hit will make your heart pump! You'll feel a crazy adrenaline rush and you'll overflow from satisfaction upon a sweet victory or from rage when you, yet again, fail miserably and die for the 100th time... Carefully crafted! There are 2 modes, normal and kaizu. Normal mode is challenging but Kaizu mode is agonizing and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Severe controller issues, accuracy problems and a lack of clarity make the only precise thing about this "precision" platformer the guarantee that it frustrates you quickly with little to no payoff. I can't recommend Unlinked Mask, unless you like to punish yourself.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The controller support is in a pitiful state currently. See Kymerah_yo's review for more details.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unlinked mask is a prequel & DeMake of Linked Mask, another great Kaizo platformer by the same developer. This game is a frustrating blast from start to finish. A solid intro to Kaizos id say, difficult enough to be good time but not so much that a newer player would give up straight away like many other Kaizos tend to do. Normal playthrough might take you around an hour, can't speak on the Kaizomode cause that ♥♥♥♥ is hard results will vary lol All in all its a ton of fun, has an…

Anyways, I finally have now completed An Unlinked Mask and month ago, and I freaking loved and adore it so much!!!!!!!!! Very underrated 2D platformer video game in 2024!!!!!!!!! The reason why I love An Unlinked Mask so much it's because it's pretty much an Super Mario World Romhack Standard video game but transform into an Indie video game!!!!!!!!!!! Which is amazing!!!!!!!!! I never seen an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short precision platformer! Retro vibes & mega-man ish music. Feels good! Quite enjoyable :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A much better game than its predecessor, for those of you who might be wondering :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun, but the fact that the D-pad from every controller (8bit do, Switch Pro controller, Dualshock 4) I've tried stop working and (works on the menu, but left goes down and right goes up) and there's no option to map the controllers is so frustrating that makes me want to puke. Fix this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even though I only played for 36 minutes, I could see the potential in this game. The controls feel quite fine on PC (though I’ve heard they are worse on consoles). The difficulty is in a strange place: it isn’t hard enough to feel like a real challenge, but it also isn’t easy to complete on a first attempt. My main issue is the lack of direction. Combined with the absence of checkpoints and the game’s speed, mistakes feel overly punishing and end up hurting the overall enjoyment. There are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unlinked Mask is a compact 2D precision platformer built around retro presentation, demanding movement, and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles through practice. Developed by Klonoz and published by indie.io, it serves as a prequel to Linked Mask and embraces an aesthetic heavily influenced by the handheld gaming era. Its intentionally limited pixel graphics immediately establish an old-school atmosphere, but underneath that nostalgic exterior is a platforming experience designed around…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please fix: - Controllers (buttons are mixed up — using an Xbox Series controller here). - Menus (strange behavior). - Data tracking (jumps and deaths are all zeroed by the end of the game). This would turn a good — though very short — platformer into a very good, or even a great one.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah, the PS5 controller isn't supported and you can't map controls, so it's not possible to play that way. However, the game itself looks good and nice music here (I played through a couple of training levels before I got the first ability that I can't find a button for) and price is just low for those looking for a nostalgic GB/NES experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i composed the soundtrack for a short gameboy-themed indie game called Unlinked Mask. check it out!! i'm also uploading it to youtube one/two songs per day. 💨 www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i bought the game for some fun kaizo stuff, it instead changed my perspective on life
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A friend and I raced this game blind and we both loved it! My experience is with the harder ‘kaizo’ difficulty as we did not play the normal mode. The game had great music, great visuals and very nice linear difficulty. It was tough, but a fun tough that felt fair (except a sneaky surprise on the final platforming level, hehehe). Some of the ‘whomp’ esque enemies felt a little unreadable first play through, but the quick respawning makes this not an issue. The first phase of the final boss had…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is pretty short to beat, though provides good value for the price. How good/bad you are at kaizo will determine how long it takes, however. It took me personally 1.5hr to beat the base campaign on normal difficulty, though it never got to the point where it became frustrating or upsetting. One complaint is about the boss fight. The hands' hitboxes are really weird and lead to a lot of unfair feeling deaths. Again, it only took 20 minutes to beat the boss, so not a major complaint.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very cool little indie game. Decently challenging precision platforming reminiscent of Mario World kaizo romhacks. With music that would fit right at home in an old school Mega Man game. Has a simple palette meant to evoke the GameBoy, with a few colors from the NES mixed in. It is quite short, I was able to beat it in under an hour, and anyone with some Mario kaizo experience won't find it all that challenging. But I still enjoyed it quite a lot.
