60 of 170 · most liked firstWhen this came out I don't think there was anything quite like Spellforce, it blends RTS and RPG mechanics in a way that feels genuinely unique, and I think it works really well. You create your main character and form a party that levels up and learns new abilities, just like in a traditional RPG. There are multiple ability branches, so planning ahead is important you can’t learn everything. The level cap is 30, and you’ll never reach 31, as there isn’t enough experience to get there. Your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The second instalment in the SpellForce series moves forward with the epic story and world building established by its predecessor. Certain aspects of the gameplay have been expanded while others have been simplified, which results in more streamlined gameplay which I've always enjoyed a ton. Certain things are different than in SpellForce 1, however, SpellForce 2 does a terrific job of keeping the heart and soul of the series alive. My only suggestion is to make sure you roll your game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RTS - RPG Hybrid It might be a bit old and outdated, but don't be fooled by that, this is an insanely good game 👌
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are too many errors that the consumer has to fix instead of the developers doing their job. I've done all the guides that mention fixing this error that prevents the game from loading. These include deleting files, changing the config.xml, verifying data, reinstalling the game, downloading legacy drivers, and everything else. I'm running on a brand new PC with Windows 10. This is an inexcusable act; I would have thought better from THQ and their partners.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly the game is unplayable (crashes, bugs, errors). I wanted to replay whole spellforce franchise but I can not with current condition. I've tried almost everything. Tested: run game as administration, checked other variations of Windows, changed graphic settings (resolutionts etc.) , directX versions, chcanged the game from Polish version to English one. I even download the Hardware Patch from Spellforce forum and still getting crashes. You can always change game version in beta settings…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While i enjoyed the first game and got bored with the expansions for it, this brings no improvement upon what was already present in the first game and it feels like another expansion than a stand alone game. I looked up the story online and this has to be the most boring 'fantasy' game i have ever came across. I'm not going to waste 25 to 30 hours of my time to play this poorly written slop.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not work well in Windows 10 if you can get it to work at all. Mouse movements lag out game to the point of being unplayable. Tried hardware community patch but it would not even detect the install directory and for some reason there is no manual way of installing the patch without the patch doing a full system search for the game. Honestly not worth the effort to play an old game like this when there are better and more modern working alternatives out there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Spellforce 3 and enjoyed it, so I decided to grab the bundle so I could play through the rest of the series. The original game and Shadow Wars both play exactly how you would expect and are great games. Unfortunately, Spellforce 2 steadily becomes more broken with each expansion. Dragon Storm would crash, but it was pretty rare and not really game breaking for me. The path finding for the AI on the other hand was infuriating. The units would constantly ignore move commands, get stuck…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too many crashes during game play. Also I purchased the entire Spellforce 1,2 plus all the addons at first release which no longer loads due to third party apps no longer operating. I thought steam would resolve any legacy issues but game freezes regular enough to put me off playing my nostalgic journey.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A buggy mess and a lot of issues with graphics. Crashed and restarted 7 times and started from scratch. I'd love to play this and this game brings back memory, but can't play. Hopefully it will be fixed in future.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game fails to start on my system. After a few google searches it seems you have about a 50/50 chance of it working on yours. Good luck!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't recommend. Main reason is a game breaking bug that occurs multiple times in the campaign. I could find workarounds each time except before the start of the final, so thats 60hours down the drain. Community Patches found online haven't fixed the problem for me either. That aside the game tries to combine the base building and strategiec warfare of e.g. Warcraft 3 with the Leveling and Random Loot of e.g. Diablo II and imho the results are less then either. In the campaign you collect…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love spell force very much but what bugs me most is trying to get through the game seems impossible. The devs are of no help at all. There are so many glitches that when you progress through the game it says you are in violation and loss so many hours of work. I am fed up with having to restart the game over so do njot waste money nor time on this particular one
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looks so much better than the original, but I'd say it still did not age well. The story is still too cliche for my preference and thus, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is genuinely a step down from the original which was an odd but functional mix between RTS and RPG, this game somehow manages to make both the RTS and RPG mechanics garbage.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What's with the bug? i love this game, but the bug is killing me read all the support thread on how to fix it, the main question is, why should i fix it? i just want to play, i'm not a programmer or developer?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has the widest spectrum of bugs I've ever seen in +20 years of gaming: - "Fatal errors" every 2 hours, this error removes the background where your characters walk, replacing it with some white layout. - Game freezing while the map is loading. - Talking heads NPCs, the rest of the body is absent (they probably decided to run away from this Edition). - Invisible characters in cities. - Troops not moving when prompted. - Game suddenly crashing. - This game EVEN has flashing lights…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as good as Spellforce 1, but it is still a beautiful game. Storywise, Shadow Wars is both good and bad. I didn't like the boss, but the journey was okay. Dragon Wars part was a lot better, especially because it continues the story even further - with the knowledge from Spellforce 1, too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good game, though it does show its age. There are a few problems here and there such as graphical issues and sometimes problems with saving but these are fairly easily overcome if you have the patience for it. The expansions (Faith in Destiny and Demons of the Past) are great though and are well worth picking up as they are better written and voice acted, plus have some other general gameplay improvements. No idea if anyone will read this far but the easy fix I found for the graphical…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's no Warcraft 3, but it'll do. There's so few games like Warcraft 3 these days if you catch this on sale for a couple bucks I definitely think you should go for it. Particularly since there's sequels to check out as well if you like it. Story is much weaker than Warcraft 3, mind you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The second game in the Spellforce series of RPG/RTS games fixes and streamlines a lot of the issues with the first game ...by dumbing down most of its complexity. While SF1 had the highest highs and the lowest lows in all of its aspects from presentation to gameplay, SF2 is a lot more polished experience, but it removes a lot of excitement and makes the game somewhat more boring in comparison. While the first game was a High Fantasy with some cool concepts, this game is a more grounded Heroic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 2 hours of playing, I can say one thing: it's lacking anything I liked from spellforce 1.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I felt guilty about not finishing this game, but not guilty enough that I wanted to keep on playing it and finishing it. There's a mix of things that made it exciting at first but then let my interest fade away. The beginning of the story is fine, the characters look fine, as it's the mix of RPG and RTS gameplay styles. Slowly though, everything became for me a bit stale. The plot and settings are filled with so many cliches beside the main characters, that the plot stopped pulling the cart…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SpellForce 2: Anniversary Edition remains one of the more fascinating fantasy hybrids ever created because it refuses to commit entirely to a single genre. Instead of choosing between role-playing mechanics and real-time strategy gameplay, the game fully embraces both, resulting in an experience that feels expansive, ambitious, and surprisingly immersive even years after its original release. The Anniversary Edition gathers the base campaign and Dragon Storm expansion into one package while…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is sheer nostalgia for me. I played this more than a decade ago when I was in high school, and loved the RPG and the strategy, and the story telling, the myth, the magic, and character building. When I found this on Steam, I brought it on an impulse. But playing it has brought back many fond memories, as well as a renewed appreciation of the game. The graphics are dated, but very enjoyable. Sometimes, the not so polished, a little bit rusty kind of graphics is good!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peak Eurojank Game will crash and erase 2 hours of progress. Repeatedly. Including quicksaves, for some reason. Perhaps the game just stops quicksaving at some point. Don't know, don't care. Already uninstalled. Story The game has a generic RPG story with a Big Bad who wants to rule the world, and we as a player control a bunch of heroes trying to stop them. It starts off just like any other 2004 RPG, where the heroes cluelessly bumble around various maps for no reason, suffer attitude from…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Multiplayer does not work, cannot create account.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was my entire childhood. Even compared to modern titles, this is the only game that makes me replay it once a year.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of those hidden gems that you keep coming back to. Timeless classic
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is 10/10 playing through steam 1/10 need to start game 10 times to make it work if you are luck if not them 15 times.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →don't buy if you have an updated pc, doesn't work anymore
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SpellForce 1 with improved graphics.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. similar to Warcraft 3 but much better.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful mix of real time strategy and rpg, that builts a beautiful, gigantic world and tells a great high-fantasy story. Best feature in my opinion is the ability to change between top-down and third person view, where you control the character with the wasd-buttons, making the transition from rts to rpg even more seamless and allowing the player even deeper immersion. 10/10 - a must play for fantasy RPG fans
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game will not launch now, I was a good bit into it, too. Edit: I'm home on my main PC, and it is broken here now, too. I was playing it yesterday and the day before just fine.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dragon Age+Warcraft = Spellforce
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like the 1st Spellforce, this games FPS goes to about 7 whenever you move the mouse. This is very frustrating. I have tried different things, but you wouldnt think that one should have to jump through hoops to play a game that they bought. "Change this, download this, reinstall that, turn this on, turn that off.." And it still makes no difference. I really wanted to play this game (and Spellforce Platinum Edition) but this mouse issue is a real turn off. Dont recommend until this is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had some problems with starting the game, but overall, this game is extremely interesting and if the bugs gets fixed and gets re-released - it definitely could make it in today's market :) One thing I really liked about the game are the levels - they are all strategy-type levels, but they are also different and not repeating. It's really cool cuz they are all different situations yu are put it and you need to really think through your strategy to pass the levels. I would recommend the game,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried to play campaign - crashed during opening cutscene. Tried to play online with a friend - online services appear to be down. This makes the 'Online PvP' and 'Online Co-op' tags on the store page a lie. This game doesn't work. It shouldn't be sold on steam.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Huge problem with windows 11, the same as in spellforce 1 platinum. Huge stutters and you can barely even select units in this with the issue as the square when selecting doesn't even work half the time
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →jesus this is buns and it is so buggy - tried to patch via unofficial, following the guides but it did not work - anyway... that would not help it much. if you played the first game, theres a decent chance that you will not enjoy this one and upwards in the spellforce series.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dated, slightly buggy, but nostalgic to the gills, and to be honest, it's quite a fun game, and the campaign will keep you busy for a while.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trash game, worse than sf1 in every aspect. Looks awful. The leveling is awful, every icon is awful, rts is awful, rpg is awful
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellforce 2 offers an enjoyable experience with improved graphics and an interesting story. Although I missed the runes from the first game, this one still has plenty to offer. For RPG/strategy fans, it's a reliable choice that will keep you entertained for many hours. While the first game remains closer to my heart, the sequel also deserves a place in my library.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Constant crash losing your progress, units take a lot to respond & graphics dated horribly...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You still can't walk faster in this one either and the magic is a bit limited compared to the first one but everything else is improved: graphics, story, unit/race variety, map exploration, streamlined progression system, you get to play with and as a dragon later on in the story, and just overall content. Oh and Ya Boi Flink McWinter gets time to shine, the Prof.Twiddle questline is fun, and there's the equivalent of you leading an army to victory while resolving the regrets of a ghost so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been a long time since I've had such an interest in strategies as after this game. Thank you very much for this masterpiece of bygone times, I highly recommend it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a big fan of Spellforce 1, this game was a huge letdown. It's not a bad game by any means, but it feels like a spinoff game in the series and not a real sequel to SF1. Bad things: Music is forgetable compared to the amazing OST from the first game; Worldbuilding and lore is a lot worse, it doesn't add much to the original game which is a massive letdown; Graphics, while higher fidelity, go completely against the original artstyle (RIP blades, oh god what did they do to you...) and it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So after playing the first one and this game in succession I have to say I am very impressed how well everything fits together, like the creators planned the game succession and progression over the course of both games and their DLCs. The presentation might be a bit dated, but to me still very beautiful and stylized in a way I have no game seen yet...it has this beautiful desolation artstyle and mood to it. I just love running over the map in 3rd person mode, after I have cleared a map…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has bugs that you can fix by using a tutorial. It is said that is old and this is the reason for the bugs. I played the game in the past but unf I can't play this game on steam. I will say very bad experience
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a big fan of the Spellforce Series, & I loved the original games. They had wonderful graphics & gameplay for the time it came out. This game, however, pales in comparison to the first game, mainly because the graphics pretty much looks the same as the original game! Keep up with the times, devs! I can only recommend this game to die-hard fans of the original game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sequel to one of the most inovative games....presents itself by lack of it I loved first Spellforce - I played it for more than 100 hours and enjoyed it immensely - the game managed to do so many things well that it was easy to overlook the parts that it did wrong. With Spellforce 2 however, it is the other way around - due to so many aspects being done WORSE than in the first game, it is almost hard to notice what it does better than the first one. I could not wait to play the second one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →15 hrs in stars crashing all over
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is one of mid 2000's RTS games of all time. This is how I would describe it if it wasn't another game in the Spellforce series. It continues story where first one left off with a bit of a twist. Personally I didn't like the story overall, but it has good RTS mechanics with a sprinkle of hero based gameplay from the first one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a worse version of spellforce platinum, but its still spellforce, which i will take in any orifice i have
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is excellent, have no words, play it if you didn't
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars is one of those rare gems in the strategy-RPG hybrid genre that manages to blend two seemingly different worlds into a single, coherent, and engaging experience. Released as the successor to the original SpellForce, it not only improved upon its predecessor but also carved out a unique place in the hearts of players who love both real-time strategy and role-playing elements. Even today, years after its release, the game holds up remarkably well thanks to its ambitious…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is multifaceted. Here you have a cool plot, real-time strategy, MMORPG, and a dark elf. SpellForse 2 deserves your attention if you are a fan of WOW or other real-time strategies. I love games where you need to rummage through dark corners in an attempt to find some nice little thing, here they took care of it and it makes sense to do it. This is an example of a game that gets better over time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting mix of RTS and dungeon crawler game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SpellForce 2 simplifies both its RPG and RTS elements and adopts a more stylized, cartoony look-but the result is a smoother, more accessible experience that still carries the heart and ambition of SpellForce: The Order of Dawn. Though streamlined, it never feels hollow. The passion behind it shines through, making it a worthy and heartfelt successor.
