60 of 137 · most liked firstAlthough Faith in Destiny, the previous (also chronologically) installment of Spellforce series, was slightly disappointing, Demons of the Past is an amazing game, especially for the fans of the Spellforce series. Gameplay - RTS and RPG mix still exists. Although I always liked Spellforce 1 (platinum edition on Steam)'s RPG system (skill building, etc.) more, the RPG side of Demons of the Past is pretty great still. Many side quests and main quests give you many details about the story, making…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played the Spellforce series from the beginning, and loved every installment. Until this one. The side quests are completely boring, mostly just "go back to the last area you cleared and find an item or two." The combat is easy but everything takes way too long to die. They probably expect you to skip the terrible side quests, so maybe I was stronger than I should have been. The dialogue is terrible, and not because it's translated from German. The translation is fine. Every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now then, I have been very fond of the Spellforce series this far, and have many fond memories of them. Unfortunately though, this release is still in a serious need of further updating. As the game is currently, it is nothing more than seriously frustrating and an annoyance. Leaving the lack of missing patches aside, this standalone release of Spellforce may provide many hours of joy and feelings of nostalgia to everyone who remembers playing Spellforce 1. But until those bugs have been…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually I am sitting on the fence a bit with this new Spellforce game. I've clocked a number of hours but haven't got a long way through as yet. But I'll give it a thumbs up merely because I think it will end up ok - vastly different to the number of thumbs down reviews here from people who have spent little time in the game and their issues sound more like technical or other problems rather then an actual "review" of the game itself. Sure, it's got a few bugs, but I haven't seen a game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this game if you are a fan of the real past Spellforce Games and their story (like the Order of Dawn, Breath of the Winter, Shadow of the Phoenix, Spellforce 2 and Spellforce 2 Dragon Storm). This game is as worse as Spellforce Faith in Destiny and there is no chance that any fruther game will ever connect to the original games. And besides the worse story there are many bugs and the dialogues are most of the time that stupid that I've just skip them. The only "good" thing about this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bugs, bugs, bugs. Lacking a serious tutorial. There are so many things a new player to the series will not understand. I you haven't played the earlier versions, don't buy this game. Unless you enjoy spending time on youtube trying to find out what you are supposed to do; or writing and waiting for answers on the Steam forum. I think this was the worst money spent. I am tired of half-made games being put on Steam for developers to make a quick buck. MAKE YOUR GAME THEN SELL IT. You have been…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i got this off a bundle and played it for the cards. before i noticed i already had racked up several hours of play. rather than our sily skirmishes where we start off with resources and move on slowly, this game lets you play the way you want to(to a certain extent, of course). rpg mechanics that let you build your heroes up to your liking with different active and passive abilities, quests and equipment. add to that some nice rts elements(hate it or love it :P) and you get a rather enjoyable…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I've always been more or less a fan of Spellforce games. Granted the first one was vastly superior to the 2nd one, Spellforce 2 still had some good things going for it. However... this "expansion"... yeah stay away from it. It's horrible build, has "quests" that barely work. It wouldn't be a bad thing if you could skip the majority of these quests but most of them are main storyline quests which do hinder your progression. The only redeeming quality is the Freeform Game which is also…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This very much feels like a rushed beta-version at best. They forgot to put in the tutorial, which I don't mind (seeing as I own all of the Spellforce games before this), but for anyone new to the series this could be a huge issue. The game is littered with a relatively boring story-line that involves cut-scenes (multiple minutes at times) that one can't skip. To be fair, the story might be good, but the video at the very beginning did not work for me, which is just one of the many bugs that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I decided to finally play spellforce series back to back. Finished order of dawn, breath of winter, shadow of the phoenix. great games. got to 2. felt.. dumbed down. but enjoyable. played the base game shadow wars, then free game mode, dragon storm, faith in destiny. at faith in destiny i noticed some quirkiness but nothing to bad. then came this game. Demons of the past.. PEOPLE WARNED ME. i did not listen. but people warned me... the quirkiness increased by i muddled through. till that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it allot. Although I like all of them, this one was different in some ways, allot alike really, just changed campaign but it was really well created and put together. Can't wait for Spellforce 3. (completed it, clocked it, did all quests) #level30
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've always been a fan of SpellForce games. Not impressed with this one, but I've played the other ones many years ago and it may just be nostalgia ("Back in my day, games were better!"). True to the previous games and cheap, but a little short and imbalanced. If you are a fan, like me, go right ahead. But when you do, beware of the... BUGS! Ohhh, the bugs, bugs everywhere! If you are not careful and happen to finish a side quest before you were "supposed to" you may break it, or even break the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was such a huge let down. And I hope these reviews get to the developers attention. The first Spellforce was pretty decent, and, unlike this mess, was actually coherent. Spellforce 2 was better. It had an actually driving plot that you could follow and know what was going on, and more than just know what was going on, but know where to go next as well as incorporating some really cool elements of RPG and RTS. In the end Spellforce 2 was a good attempt but needing a great deal of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried this game on Easy setting. I get to the quest where I am supposed to set up my first base. Suddenly there is enemies everywhere. There is no way to be able to micromanage battle and base building simultaneously. I have read that this is a bug but I have no stamina to start the game over, for the possibility of getting it to work. I simply deleted the game. I have enjoyed previous versions of Spellforce but this one nearly made me hairless.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a buggy ride even with the community patch. 😒👿😬 EDIT: Finished after 60+ hours and my opinion is unchanged. Game is Meh! 😫😡
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game to Spellforce fans 100%. To new peeps, check Faith in Destiny first. As opposed to Faith in Destiny, which is the previous installement in the series, it starts with RTS style right away, rather than with slow-paced RPG. Then you get to RPG for a while. I haven't finished it yet but it's totally worth my time. The eleven godtrials (oh my, spoiler here) were entertaining, bar the annoying stealth one. And you get to visit the biggest city in the entire franchise, built up…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. You can add me to party up for a co-op or suvival-mode anytime. Maybe.. i'm not always ready or in the mood to play this game but i will be someday so don't be shy & add me for spellforce 2 demons of the past.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a honist review if you call it that from my play though of the game I enjoyed it even with the bugs granted some where almost game breaking but I would say its a pin shot better than Faith in Destiny the campain will test you even on easy and the Free Mode is also worth a go granted with freinds its all the more fun aside from the bugs that the patch did not fix I would say its a nice game but if you are the type of player who wants a game that does not have a tendancy to explode in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Junk, but still better than so called supposed third game. At least this one cares about SF lore with its a bit of knowledge c:
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →can be buggy sometimes but still awesome i have been a fan of spellforce since i got the very first game which came out in 2003 i think. Since the developers phenomic and jowood are out of buisness i am extremely pleased to see this franchise is continuing but i don't feel like it is as good as it used to be. That being said i love this game series and am looking foreward to seeing where the story goes with the now confirmed spellforce 3. Demons of the past i feel is aimed more at the people…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the mix of rpg and strategy elements. Graphics are slightly imporved and it runs much smoother than previous games. No new faction but there are new game modes. My main (and only) annoyance and I hope developers fix this, its the lack of save game in the skirmish modes. Its really annoying not being able to save your game. But once they fix that, Best game ever!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game but cant restart which ♥♥♥♥♥ up when ur doing missions
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has a few annoying bugs, but was worth playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you aren't already a fan, start with an earlier game. Lots of content here, not all of it's great, but if you've stuck with SpellForce 2 games for this long, then keep going because it's not like this is much worse than previous entries. I think the camera kinda sucks and managing units and hero skills is a chore, personally, but maybe other people are used to it. The only real disappointment for me comes from not being super into this game when I used to really like RTS games - and no one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not Recommended This game feels more like an unfinished beta than a proper release. It’s riddled with bugs that make it nearly unplayable: constant crashes, broken quests, NPCs that don’t respond, pathfinding that drives units into walls or keeps them stuck, and random freezes that force you to restart. Even when you manage to get past the technical issues, the balance is all over the place. Some fights are absurdly easy, while others are impossible because of scripting bugs. Cutscenes often…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellforce 2: Demons Of The Past is an RPG and strategy game by Hungarian developer Mind Over Matter, under the command Nordic Games, who also published Faith in Destiny, the second SpellForce 2 expansion. With a new single player campaign offering 25+ hours of gameplay, Spellforce 2: Demons of the past provides the cherry on Spellforce 2’s cake. In a game where nearly all Races are playable — Pact, Shaikan and even the Undead, Demons Of The Past provides a rounding-off experience of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While more interesting than original game and Faith in Destiny, Demons of the Past won't convince you to start liking SP2 saga Demons of the Past is the last DLC to be released for SpellForce 2 and, while offering a few interesting ideas and levels, is ultimately as bland as Faith in Destiny. If you, like me, did not really like SP2 and its subsequent DLC, DotP is not going to change your mind. Do yourself a favor and play original SP and then go for SP3, you'll have much better experience.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is just more sloppy writing expansion made for a sloppy written base game. Not going to waste my time with it. The original game was better and had more fun with it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After buying all the Spellforce games in a bundle together, I told myself that I would play them through in order and I have so far. But this expansion is the straw that broke the camels back. I tried and tried and tried to play it. I gave it so many chances. Too many, in fact, and I'm a little ashamed of how long it took me to see the truth. This game is not worth the effort it takes to play. It makes no sense, the voice acting is ♥♥♥♥, the subtitles are ♥♥♥♥, it's unbalanced as all hell, it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolutely torturous experience in every respect - a blot on the franchise. A horrible first impression evolves into frustration and disbelief that someone could push this through QA. Writing is atrocious and makes little sense. The voice acting is painful to listen to. The first iteration, even with its old age, grinds this into the dust. Play Anniversary and forget about the other two.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cant get the game to work
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You know, there just comes a time when you shouldn't just release game after game after game with pretty much the same gameplay...in the same engine...it just gets tiresome after a while. What reason is there to play Demons of the Past, other than to get some conclusion to the story nobody really cares about? It's more of the same, the same spells, the same skills, the same weapons, the same races, the same units. Yes, sure, there are some additions here and there, but it's neither worth the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an old 3D RPG/RTS hybrid with a high fantasy theme. Surely a recipe for success, but it's got problems. Overscan/DPI issues prevent the mouse pointer working in this game. The developers have not fixed the problem, the game is unsupported. If you have a 4K or better monitor, and therefore use custom DPI settings, the game isn't playable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This one is much better than faith in destiny since probably the creators took in that demons of the past was very short and indeed this one offers more action and better gameplay
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you’re a big Spellforce fan that’s been eagerly waiting to see the end of the story that started 8 years ago, you’re essentially the target audience. The game has a handful of redeeming qualities and it can be refreshing to play something so decidedly “old-school”, but the novelty wears off quickly. There is a lot of content in this game that could potentially occupy your gaming habits for dozens of hours, but it’s ultimately just not worth the time investment. With so many other great RTS,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The free Play Mode is so buggy and glichted out after a certain quest, additionally there's even a map that says "teszt" in the loading screen, first of all that's a missspelling, secondly why aren't you finishing your games THQ Nordic.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was suprising i usually am very closed minded to alot of the RTS game but this one was a challenge and a lot of fun. i recommend a playthrough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Multiplayer didn't allow me to host a game. My friend was able to host a game, but I was never able to connection due to a never ending "Establishing Connection..." message. I had high hopes for this game and was shot down immediately. Even though I got this on the humble bundle, I should've spent it on the first game of this series for the same price. The single player wasn't much, didn't get very far since I mainly like the online aspect of these types of games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im having a hard time liking the missions. Each one seems to get more boring in the design, and each mission gets more agrivating on the things that I must do. These developers need to realize that people want sandbox or open ended worlds. Not I must save the game every 4 minutes in case I die or fail to do a stupid puzzle quest right or wrong like Im in some kind of college class trying to pass the final and have learned nothing about what is really going on in the game. I am giving this a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lazy and incredibly buggy mess of the game. During those almost 17 hours I got softlocked 3 times, having to restart whole chapters just for the game to work again properly. Additionally some side quests are unsolvable due to important components not spawning.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am quite a fan of all Spellforce installments but this particular DLC left me largely unimpressed and not striving for more. It feels bland and rushed out. A shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: only buy during a Steam sale, if you're a Spellforce fan and do not mind a buggy, unpolished experience. I played through the entire campaign, including all sidequests and map exploration, in about 30 hours. And while the content itself is decent, my overall experience was not. Several quests were missing markers or were bugged altogether, while other quests are programmed in such a way that unless you do actions in a particular order (which you are not informed about), you simply…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellforce 2 - Demons of the Past was the last standalone expansion to Spellforce 2 and sadly one of the weakest entries at that. The story was shoddy, the campaign in essence comparatively short yet artificially prolonged by insufferable amounts of travel times with quest dialogues bordering on abysmal. There's literally no reason to play this, not even for completionist. Play the brilliant Spellforce 3 and its even more billiant expansion instead, if you want to play a truly great Spellforce…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried starting a new game to refresh my memory and my god so boring gameplay and you start with no armor and no weapons but a the first person you hire is fully kitted... seems they are the hero here not you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the spellforce series but this has way too many bugs. Also once you're on your last mission the game ends and you cannot go back to collect items or complete side quests
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Addon is dialed to hard with difficulties and it feels way too rushed in comparison with all Spellforces titels coming before this one. I had tons of fun in SP1, SP2 was mediocore but this addon is the worst point in the series yet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stealth in Spellforce? Really? In which enemies can see you through walls or just spot you randomly even in shadows? One of the dumbest things I've seen in games for the last 20 years. Probably even a winner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eQkv2pv73U It gets even better on hard, where these guards are running instead of walking. Reload 500 times, spend the whole day clicking-and-praying. And it isn't a side quest, it's a part which you can't skip. Why should I waste my life on some dev's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only for fans of spellforce, even then you might get frustrated Finish of all the open strings left from a long period of spellforce universe. As before some maps are really hard to play. Save often and reload before missing a single quest on a map.. Unfortunately the maps usually end up in asutomatically transfer to the next world. So you might miss to end the map if not going back as a first step. As a hint: genrally follow the sidequests first before following or finishing the story…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a stealth mission just after the beginning that is almost impossible
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game sucks! The quests are buggy and never actually accomplish anything, everytrhing moves way to slow, and as near as I can tell the designers want you to throw your computer out a window rather than play this game. Even on sale I feel ripped off.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this franchise, I really do. I loved Spellforce 1 and I loved Spellforce 2 but this campaign is just... so... incredibly.... BORING. Fists I'm standing in the middle of some cementary thingy and killing low level skeletons for some 15 minutes. Then I'm stuck for half an hour on a puzzle that makes no sense, probably because it was translated from German. Now I'm running around the literall city of the dead, there's epic music in the background, and I'm looking for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ink and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What really annoy me about Games, if there is no windowed mode. I honestly don´t understand it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are a lot of things that this game has that are nice. And then there is the complete lack of any kind of guidance when the game shifts from one set of primary goals to the next. The UI is clunky, and the game play is lackluster. The RPG elements seem cool, and having minions that you can also level up is interesting, but trying to use the abilities of more than one at a time is a pain.
