This short kinetic visual novel feature an anonymous male protagonist referred to as The Unhacker. As the best unhacker of Smash Security, the Unhacker attempts to investigate the source of the 5K Worm virus infection that is spreading across cyberspace with some help from his AI companions Weedy and Miss Debug. Suspecting their immediate competitor ACME Antivirus to be behind the creation and spread of the virus for financial gain and profit, the Unhacker attempts to hack across multiple…

Unhack is an indie puzzle game with a story that is delivered in visual novel style. For a rather decent price, you'll get a hour or two of very nice story, well made backround music with anime styled sprites dubbed by english voice actors. I will try to avoid all spoilers in these few words I'd like to share about my impressions. First of all, for such a short game, the story is very nice. It has everything from a nice start to a well done climax. The characters are nice. To my suprise even…

Unhack is a bizarre game. It's a mix between a visual novel and a puzzle game where you go from point A to point B. Unhack, story is pretty bizarre as well. You play as the unhacker and you have to go through data streams to stop the 5K worm. The gameplay is you moving a square through orbs, but you can only place your square on the orbs. There are viruses and lasers that will destroy you on impact. There are boss battles where you have to shoot at the AI core to destroy them. The visual…

Unhack (2014) is the sort of pleasant surprise you’d never pick out from a glance at its simple artwork, seemingly basic mechanics, and emoticon laden dialogue. Rest assured Unhack isn’t complex, nor does its artwork ever emerge as much more than it first appears, but the game is carried by an infectious charm and a recognition by its developer of their limitations (which are then subverted by played as a strength). By the end I was rather taken aback just how much I had enjoyed myself.…

An enjoyable merger of puzzle game with a visual novel style storytelling. It's fully voiced too and the actors do a solid job for such a small project. Certainly worth a look if you like puzzle games

I really liked the basic idea of the gameplay, but it was much too easy. New gameplay mechanics were introduced in each chapter, but none of them were fully explored. The timing sequences didn't really get any harder from the beginning of the game onwards. My suggestion would be to add in some puzzling elements to spice it up and make the game longer. The playtime is definitely too short (about 40 minutes to beat once) when compared to the price. Art was fine. It wasn't spectacular, but…

Awesome mix of visual novel and simple puzzle game, with very nice graphics and sound and a wide range of difficulty levels to choose and memorable characters, this game is very fun and it is not a 10/10 only for the reasons stated below: - your own character has no voice and that makes you have to go back to a previous line of a conversation, as characters speak while you play; - there is no way to know where you are in the story, unless you memorize the last chapter you played; - no…

Played it for story :D Well, there is nothing else to play this for, but that's a good thing. Characters are charming, puzzle / action part is rather easy and don't expect Sakura Spirit here, so story is all what's left. So, it's not best story I ever seen, but it surely kept me interested. It gets from intentionally funny to downward ridiculous (I mean, you are removing viruses by firing a canon!), but it surely has its nice moments and it's perfectly worth those 4€ that dev is asking for.…

This is a game you truly play mostly for the plot, the gameplay itself is very simple, move around in simple while avoiding obstacles and unlocking the paths to the next area. Upping the difficulty makes this game a bit more challenging if you're into that, but honestly this game is a tearjerker by the end (Without spoiling anything!) Don't let the simplicity of this game fool you, it's a great story that progresses as you're playing the game and moving around each area. Despite all this, I do…

Unhack is a mix of visual novel and light puzzling. Short and sweet at a little over an hour with infinite lives at normal difficulty. It started negatively for me with the usual "pervert" main character, but I ended up liking the story by the end. Amateurish fan art but not terrible. The "unhacking" mini-game with extremely simplistic graphics was more varied and interesting than I initially thought. It did require a bit of reflexes by moments so it wasn't pure cerebral puzzling. Unhack was…

Whelp, I guess that was all of Unhack. At a full 61 minutes of playtime, do not mistake this for a long game. Should you get it though? Eh, why not. Gameplay consists of guiding a small orange cube through top-down levels representing the insides of computer programs. You travel by means of nodes, so there's no real exploration element, it has more of a puzzle vibe to it. On its own this would be boring, you're playing this for the story. Unhack Destruction is an interesting mix of VN + Puzzle/Strategy/Action game. Regardless of the devs inexperience when putting this title together, as they state it was their first one on steam, the game flows pretty well and isn't too long or drawn out. Some games you feel they could have just stopped and you would have been happy, or they continue to make insane challenge after insane challenge. That's not the case with Unhack. A nice little game that crosses the puzzle and visual novel genres. Solid art, voice acting, interface and gameplay. The only detail to critique is the lack of a resolutions option of some kind, the game is locked at 4:3. The game can be finished in around 1 or 2 hours but the story is well told and communicates the message without problem. There is some replayability but is more of a one time experience. A solid recommendation.

Remember there is a free demo that covers 40% of the game. If you are interested, just play that first. In any event, this game just... underwhelms. It's basically a visual novel with some basic gameplay thrown in to appease those people who claim that simply reading text "isn't a game", but the problem is that all it does is create a minor obstacle course to slow the player down in between text segments. Since all you do is use the arrow keys, it basically amounts to being told to push the…

Gameplay: 4/5 Visuals (inc characters) 5/5 I really enjoyed this game, the objective is to destroy the "5k Worms" across 10 stages along with Weedy and Miss Debug, the characters are fully voiced and the artwork is excellent! That, I was impressed with, Miss debugs *Yawnies* were cute too. heh... Very simple gameplay, though it's fast and flows fairly well. The art is adequate, nothing remarkable. Unfortunately, the gameplay is glitchy, the completely stock storyline barely registers a pulse in its brief run, the characters are equally one-note, and the voice actors seem like half the time they're not even completely sure what their lines were supposed to mean, with unnatural tonal fluctuations and complete emotional stiffness. The aforementioned acting is possibly the game's most…

This game is super-short and if you play on "easy" it is just basically a walkthrough of the dialogue. The story is a little preachy and predictable, but the voice acting is decent enough. I do recommend this title as a fun little visual novel piece, but it really isn't even worth the $4 price tag. It's probably best to find it in a bundle or on a deep discounted sale.

Unhack is a choiceless visual novel that includes a timing movement minigame. Go for it if you like manga girls that are expertly voiced and enjoy talking to AIs. I liked the dynamics between the AIs themselves and the player. The playthrough took me 75 minutes on unlimited health, but I tend to skip the ends of the voiceovers.

The story is more dramatic than I expected (plus I like an AI-themed visual novel). The music are pretty catchy. The puzzles are okay. The issues I've found so far in this game are: - No saving system. You have to memorize the chapter you left off by yourself. But it's not a big issue here because the gameplay is pretty short (about one and half hour to finish the game). - No windowed mode in this game. Unhack is by no means a groundbreaking gaming experience. There are a few technical issues that may hamper your experience. The game will last under two hours, all told. All those gripes aired though, I can say I did find the game moderately enjoyable. Unhack is a short little puzzlegame that can be quite tricky at stages. The main goal is to move your block to the goal, some goals are simple "get there" stages, some are bossfight stages where you have to repeat a more or less simple (but still harder) mechanic 3-4 times in a row. The puzzles at its own would be not that awesome, but they pack it in an quite tempting story where you take the role of an "pervy" [wants to try out his costume mods on the AIs, he gets "forever declined"]…
