Maybe for the sequel they'll make graphics DLC too and make the player stare at a blank screen unless they fork over more cash. This is an absolute abuse of the DLC system and developers shouldn't be allowed to hold back basic features to charge extra for them.

There are several suspects that you can meet to try and find out who the true culprit is. The story branches out in "routes", that lead to several ends : 4 "main" ends, one "true" end, and one "bad" end In order to get the "true end" you need to finish the story at least 4 times, to get all the items needed. That means you have to re-read…

Its beams fell, warm and kindly, upon the chill sea foam, and the little mermaid did not feel the hand of death. - Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid CAFE 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ is RoseVeRte's second visual novel and the first game in the CAFE 0 series so far. It is most certainly no masterpiece, yet it is a satisfactory supernatural mystery with an eerie feeling, accomplishing more than many others of its competitors for the genre in a limited…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This visuell novel has a cruel story and it start with a puzzle. You need to end first 4 endings to get the puzzle pieces to get the real end and to light the truth. You see 2 good endings and 3 bad endings all a part of hope or of trueness, but which one is one? So you need to play 5 story-lines, most time its only feels like much filling but that is normal in every game, movie or book but some parts like the mirror scene are boring and get on the 2nd walk skiped with fast forward option…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cafe 0 ~ The Drowned Mermaid, Is not a Visual Novel for just anybody. The subject that's being brought up in this VN is a bit different. It's about dying and finding peace in the fact itself. The story itself is quiet interesting from time to time, but if falls short on depth in my opinion. The conversations with the "important" characters are too shallow compared to other VN's of the same price. So, I would have expected more on that part. The graphics are a bit different also. I can't say…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, I played the game before its release on steam thus explaining my playtime. Also, I voluntarily will not speak of the game's details because it's not what I want to defend in this review. Café 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ perhaps isn't the best visual novel ever made nor the prettiest. It's probably one of the ugliest but, as a wise and just as ugly man once said, what matters is what's inside! And what's inside is okay! It offers an average and, somehow, a bit compelling story focused…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a decent game. I found the story to be fairly well written even though the character interactions themselves werent very well written at all. Strange dichotmy there, ay? Not sure what to say about that except that it exists. Good story, poor dialogue. The graphics themselves arent anything to write home about, at all. In fact, I would say they work against this game, as it's a graphic novel, and an important aspect of keeping you interested with a interactive novel is the graphics, or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the story (no spoilers here), which is sumarized on the store page. It took me around half an hour to read through, & as usual with most VN's there were multiple endings to go through. The art was fine & did the job it was meant to, & the same with the soundtrack. Both were serviceable but nothing extraordinary. I'd sugest waiting for it to go on sale if you're keen to try it. The game has both achievements & trading cards.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: -Interesting plot with multiple routes and endings. -The soundtrack is nice. -The art is good. -The dev seems to care about the game and helps when s/he can. Cons: -It's short so I'm not sure I can say it's really worth its full price. At first I found it hard to get into this game, mostly because of the female protagonist. But in the end I liked it a lot and truly enjoyed every second of it, mostly because of the true ending which was turned out really unexpected and took me by…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I often find games that give me conflicting emotions are far easier to reccomend, and this is such a case. For the majority of my playtime, I absolutely loathed this game; the characters, the dialogue--all amounted to some of the most infuriatingly childish attempts at romance and edginess in a game with some very straightforward choices that lead to almost the exact same thing. I almost gave up, writing it off as another game more catering to tweens and their fledging libidos, and I am so glad…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note: Full price not worth it since it's short Basically put the heroine re-lives a week of her life to see what kind of ghost she becomes when she inevetably dies, a haunting ghost or a calm spirit.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game because I wanted it ever since 2011, I was just 11 years old at the time. I played the demo and was dumbfounded when the trial just ended after I had one conversation at school. I thought it would be different when I purchased the full game and that I could have more conversations before the day ended. I then realized that this is a short and repetitive visual novel (thank god for the skip button haha). The writing and art is mediocre and although I like the concept of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art style could use more work, but other than that the voice acting and story were nice. I loved the tragic and bittersweet endings and the real evil personalities of the 3 characters you get to engage with. After collecting all the routes, you get to play the true route and learn about what those 3 really think and get revenge :3 ❤ I'd recommend this game cuz I'm all about that revenge life and secretly sh-tty people You should definitely get the Cafe 0 game that comes after this one,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Near the start of the prologue I already had an idea of what was happening and what the game was going to do, After playing through all the multiple routes I can say I didn't expect what happened. This visual novel takes you through 7 days with the main character. This game can give you a lot of conflicting emotions and is generally ok but not worth the full price as it is quite short.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like VNs generally, but cannot recommend spending any of your money or time on this one. It feels like a half-hearted effort. Everything is pretty bad, honestly: the art is distractingly bad, the story is boringly bad and poorly written, even the controls are bad. How one is able to screw up controls in a such a simple and short VN? Require the keyboard once and once only. Or if you use keyboard to advance, require mouse and only mouse on choices. It might be the engine though and I wouldn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game via a bundle and, honestly speaking, rather enjoyed one evening with its help. However, I can't recommend buying it at the full price. It follows a typical Japanese "bad ending(s)—good ending(s)—true ending" scheme, but unlike some other examples, it never managed to touch me to the core. In the end you discover that this is about pre-death hallucinations of a girl who tends to perceive people better or worse than they actually are, and it leaves rather indifferent, maybe…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not my cup of tea. The game started off with a pretty cool idea, but then ended very quickly. Reading one route takes like 20-30 minutes tops, so it is a very short game overall. A lot of the dialogue keeps repeating itself and it is pretty obvious which answers you have to give to get a specific ending. Though the stories themselves were very short, we did learn quite a bit about the characters and they are all equally crappy, personality-wise. The only two things I liked were the waiter and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is well done, the last one is really well done. If you like VN's you will like this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the story was interesting, that's the only thing that could possibly tempt me to recommend this game to you. I won't spoil the story for those of you that actually want to play the game through, but the mystery of who betrayed Umino kept the gameplay interesting. The art felt unfinished and amateur. The gameplay was overly simplistic and very short. To put it simply, I would not have played this game if I had not received it in a bundle.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This VN gives me a dilemma; it seemingly DOES have what I should enjoy, however it felt as if the actual story just got completely excluded from the game lol. I was excited for this due to the intriguing premise and prologue, but then once the story was supposed to begin (or so I thought), I was under the impression that the actual plot just got skipped until the sudden ending XD. The idea is very nice, I love the story concept and the "system" of getting the endings, the mystery itself is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty good game, over all. The art might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was cute. The story is predictable at times, but I went "oh snap!" once or twice. There are twists and turns I didn't see coming. :) I got the game in a bundle, and I'm not sure if it would be worth the full price--considering it only took me about an hour and a half to complete the entire thing. Then again, I'm a fast reader. Over all, it's short and bittersweet. Pick it up if you're into…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried to give this game a fair try but struggled. The concept had so much potential but it really just flopped, in my opinion. For starters, the art was extremely distracting. Trying to put this as nicely as possibly, but it was just very poorly done. The proportions, the style, everything left so much to be desired. It reminded me of manga sketches from a middle-schooler. The music was OK, not bad, not good, I'll leave it at that. The story, as I said, had potential - but was so short. As…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend it, the VO is DLC, and the artwork is awkward to look at. If you like VN's though, and are ok with a mildly interesting story it's ok then.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game follows Marin Umino in her attemp to find out who she is and come to terms with her death. You have 7 days to better or worsen a relation with any of the 3 characters. You go one at a time for each playthrough as it will help you see all 6 endings. The game has descent graphics, a well-done voice over and a story we can believe. If you're into VN, this is one to look into. 7/10

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(scroll to bottom for tl;dr version) I would say this is time well spent for the fun I got out of this story. There are a total of 6 endings in this game, though the true ending can only be unlocked once you get the other 4 endings. There is a mechanic where the protagonist can view themselves in the mirror. The outfit of the protagonist determines what route you are following. The art-style is decent enough to sit through the story to unlock the different images of the protagonist. It is a…

You take on a role of a girl who died under unknown circumstances. After the passing she finds herself at the Cafe 0, left without memories and then sent back to relive her last 7 days in an attempt to accept her death and possibly regain memories of her past and details of her death. Whilst visuals are weak, the story doesn't fail to leave…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Agh, it really is a little bit difficult writing a review for a game that reminds me of a meme, but gotta do it nonetheless. So while struggling to decide whether or not one should recommend this, it seems kinda fair to say : the game doesn't pretend to be anything other that what the screenshots or synopsis suggest; it truly is mediocre/less than average in most ways. Yes, the art is weird, and no, no matter how anyone tells you to interpret it, it will stay abnormal. This ain't a New Age…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had to write a review as a task for the "Steam Awards Nomination Committee 2016" badge, so.. Why not just say what I nominated the game for and why? I nominated CAFE 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ to the "Best Use Of A Farm Animal" Award. Why? I know there's "technically" not any farm animals in the game, but the school's doctor sure is a pig.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[Neutral Review] CAFE 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ is an average Visual Novel that tells us the story of Marin, a girl who died a miserable death, going seven days back into the past with the help of a mysterious waiter from a weird cafe. She tries to uncover the reasons behind her death, since she has no memories of who is she or what happened. The player must complete four endings in order to be able to get the true ending, that explains what really happened with Marin. The Novel mechanic is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Visual Novel is based on the discovery of a story to learn it and understand You have to start it a few times from the beginning. Gameplay time is something about 2 hours. The drawings seem to be okay just as soundtrack. Unfortunately, Japanese Voice pack is in the form of paid DLC. As for me, this is a game for fans of the genre, or for those who are looking for some kind of existential thought. I don't think that this Visual Novel should be so expensive ... so I recommend to buy it with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Intriguing concept with not that intriguing execution. We play as a girl, that find herself in weird, under water place, called Cafe 0. We meet equally weird blue-haired waiter, drink glass of water and then... We're back in reality and it turns out that we've almost drowned in pool, during swimming competition. The thing is... We don't have any memories. We don't know who we are and who are people around us. We can't even see our reflection in the mirror. If that wasn't bad enough, blue-haired…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CAFE 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ is a Japanese supernatural mystery visual novel where you follow events leading up to the death of the protagonist. The writing and artwork are somewhat mediocre, but the biggest problem is that the game crashes on launch on the latest Win 10 builds and will be unplayable (readable?) for many players. Besides, why pay money for a mediocre VN when there's free books online, libraries, etc? Certainly not worth $10 for a "game" that doesn't work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a lot of indie visual novels and otome games. To me this was storywise one of the more interesting ones I've played. It differs from a lot of the usual high school romance plots, it has a bit more depth, depicts certain topics that are sometimes stigmatized and has a bit of a creepy vibe. I wish they could've added a bit more dialog, especially since you have to replay it multiple times to get the true ending. The fact that you have to replay the game multiple times for the the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting premise for a story, but kind of poor in its execution. Its writing definitely isn't some of the best in the world, not that worth imo.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a sucker for mystery Visual Novels, so this one caught my interest by default. And while the game has its less appealing sides (like the art; or some awkward grammar here and there), I actually found myself enjoying it quite a lot. At first, I was surprised about the pacing of the game. A single playthrough consists of 7 days, but each day goes by pretty quickly with basically just a single scene revolving around a character of your choice. Things almost feel rushed at times, but it makes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This VN is actually really well done. The story takes different twists and turns with all of your different choices and it all comes together in too perfect of a way in the true end. One of the better VNs I have played through the years that is so rough looking around it's edges. The art isn't triple A or anything, in fact some parts the art either looked rediculous or bothered me to a good extent. If you look past some of the art though, it's a great diamond in the rough that I could recommend…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do I recommend this? I guess, when it is super, super cheap. It's very short and not very satisfying if you are looking for an otome. I am not sure if I'd call it an otome and I felt kinda disappointed by it, but artisticly and as a story idea, not bad I guess.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this on Desura before. Short VN with a twisted plot lol. Not all that great but not all that bad either. Love that the included Japanese audio on its Steam version. Thumbs up for the creepy awkward waiter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, the game is okay, but I don't think it was really much of a "horror" novel. Just like many visual novels, you repeat the game multiple times in order to uncover the true ending. I found the story to be just average and there doesn't seem to be any "happy" ending to the game. The artwork was only average but the soundtrack was pretty well done. In conclusion, the game is not worth $10.99, I bought it on sale and I recommend buying it on sale. Good effort by the developers though as I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is quite possibly the most depressing VN I've ever played. The true (or should that be truth) ending is brutal. There is no happy ending. There is no off into the sunset with your true love. No way to undo the end, which given the entire nature of the game, you'd have thought there would be. But no...it's you, repeating the 7 days until you work out the truth. Which is grim. If you like VN, go ahead. If you want a happy ending, avoid. Also some of the scariest CG screens I've ever seen.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can only recommend this title for those who haven't played visual novels before. Cafe 0 is just barely tolerable for casuals and veterans alike, but at the same time it is a competent gateway into the genre, for what that is worth. It's a good idea to get it only when it's for sale on a very cheap-as-chips bundle, which conspicuously happens quite often. It would also be wise to [url=http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=453323196]follow this guide if you wish to complete Cafe…

The characters were rather flat, leaving me sorely dissapointed that such an interesting plot was wasted. The artwork had an curious style that I haven't seen in a while, but time appears to have been spent on making it look professional. The soundtrack is merely okay with the music being…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very tentative recommendation. This is NOT what most people consider an OTOME or romance game, rather it is a visual novel based in mystery with hints of horror and romance. I do not recomend this as an otome but as a mystery visual novel. This horror/mystery visual novel portrays a take on the ORIGINIAL Little Mermaid, you know, the one that ends in tragedy and the mermaid dead . I’ll try to avoid spoiling it but the spoilers are what makes or breaks this game for a person, if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was an interesting game and it was worth playing. Much like 9 doors 9 persons 9 hours, you needed to play through all the routes in order to actually beat the game and get the true end. I have always liked that mechanic because it requires you to build on what you learn from previous runs to get the whole picture. Unlike 999, which left me feeling like "Wow! That was so cool how they pulled that all together!" I finished the game and went "Oh, that was neat. They really understood the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cafe 0 is short, even with a full clear of all the endings. The artwork leaves the characters looking somewhat less than human, and the plot itself sounds a bit like an angsty teenager's daydream.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Concept is good. Story isn't as fulfilling as it could be in the complexity of the endings but that doesn't mean it's a bad story at all. If you really care about aesthetics at all, the menu text is ugly but the in-game text is simple enough to be okay. Easy 100% 5/10 Decafs

And boy, things got f*cking WILD. I wasn’t expecting AT ALL the true ending. Or the other bad endings. I thought it was going to be a cliché romantic VN, but I was wrong… and I’m glad because of it. Yes, the character art isn’t the best, especially the lack of facial expressions… But to be really honest, I think that the originality of the story…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Got two hours to spar? That's about how long it'll take to get everything done. To start off... I predicted the story right off the bat, but the true ending’s twist makes it still worth playing through. Cons: However, the down side of the game is that its beyond too short. Which makes it harder to get yourself invested, because once you do - the game is already finished. Sadly, the demo will ruin the experience for a lot of people. Skip it at all costs, lol. There isn’t much else to be…

I can't really write more about it without spoilers, so... Spoilers Ahead Ok, so I leant towards Not Recommend because overall this game is depressing as ♥♥♥♥. Aside of the helpless heroine every single character is an abusive a$$hole, who coerce, injure and eventually try to kill her. There's also teacher-student sexual abuse and blackmail. Lovely. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: If you're in the mood for a mysterious story that's not necessarily happy and you can handle a mostly unpleasant main character, this is a good read. Don't go into it expecting a "reverse harem" where you experience wonderful, heady romance with each of the guys, and you should do fine. --- Overall Impression: Because of the fact that it's an early work, the graphics aren't all that amazing and the writing can be a little weak in some areas... I bought it as a part of a bundle and I really don't regret playing it. While the art may look ugly, it doesn't matter! Story is very nice and interesting, characters are fine too. I think that thos reviews are a bit harsh for a game like this. It is a Visual Novel, so don't expect epic action. It's just about being. Living.
