Sudden Strike, also known in Russia as Confrontation III (Russian: Противостояние III), is a real-time tactics computer game set in World War II and the first game in the Sudden Strike series. Released in 2000, the game was developed by Fireglow based in Russia and published by CDV Software of Germany. There are no resources to collect, no units that the player has any ability to spawn, and no technologies that must be researched. Therefore, it is not a race to any technology, special unit, or army size, like a typical RTS. In Sudden Strike, you are given a fixed amount of units to order around at the beginning of the mission. Often you will receive reinforcements, but rarely do you have any…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i am deeply nostalgic about this game. here's why: way back when i was a little turnip, my dad would regularly take me out of the house to go to places i like so my mom could catch a break from the stresses of raising a child. on one cold winter day in 2001, when i was about 7 or so, i went to walmart with some allowance money in my pocket and i bought myself a value pack largely consisting of world war 2 games on a whim. the main star of the show was sudden strike with an mission expansion…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As good and if not better then I remember. They dont make RTS games like the original sudden strike series anymore and that a damn shame. If you are an old Sudden Strike fan then get it. If you have never played it before but are a fan of WW2 strategic RTS games then get it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, don't mind the thumb down for now. I'll explain it in the second part of this review. First, let me tell you about the game itself. Sudden Strike is the third game in a Russian game series called Counter Action (AKA Counteraction, AKA Ostfront), which started in 1997. Counter Action and its sequel were pretty basic, but kind of fun real-time tactical games (real-time strategies without base building and resource management), where some missions also allowed us to use up to three…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best classic games about WW2. Played it a ton when it came out in 2001. At the time I thought the graphics were amazing and the gameplay was brutal - assaults are fast and furious with little room for error. Nowadays I think this may be too complicated for many RTS players since the controls are outdated - playing the larger missions is more tedious than fun because of path finding and unit managements. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1153653727…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sudden Strike 1 is probably one of the most gruesomely realistic WW2 combat simulations ever developed. A whole infantry regiment can get killed to one single tank if they happen to be out of grenades or heavy weapons. Every soldier, vehicle and unit has their own ammunition count, each separetely for all their weapons. The scale of Sudden Strike is absolutely fantastic too and it has a massive amount of content to explore. Spent 150 hours with just all campaigns alone, not even touching the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unless you're living on an extreme budget here on Steam or you're an old hand just out to experience a little nostalgia, I wouldn't recommend buying this game. In view of the changes and development in the RTS genre over the past years, Sudden Strike is pretty much like an ageing hag who saw her best days long ago. This game may have stood out with its innovative gameplay mechanics back in the early 2000s and was certainly unrivalled in the attention to detail regarding the representation of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all! THANK YOU STEAM! THANK YOU KALYPSO! I want to thank everyone whos responsible releasing these amazing games! There are so many things id like to say about the sudden strike series but ill stick to the basics. this is a real strategy game unlike the modern ones. you can control every single unit individually every unit has a purpose select all your units and even if you have 10 times more attack the enemy and you will lose every unit has a line of sight reckon is key to these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am so sad. So so so sad... This is THE best WW2 RTS game ever made. So if you never played it, and fancy a great and difficult Single Player experience buy this game. It's just so great. You will have never spent 6EUR for such a huge game. I'm so sorry Sudden Strike to give you a thumb down. Please forgive me.. Yes forgive me... My favorite game of all times... I would still have been ready to spend 20EUR on this game... So why thumb down?? You have to know this the best Multiplayer game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Realistic, gruesomely realistic, defines RTS" ---those are some of the unironic comments you will find here praising Sudden Strike and its sequels. The chutzpah! If your idea of realism is having an M8 Greyhound or a GMC 6X6 perform like a heavily inebriated Jagdtiger or a Panzer Maus on a barbiturate binge, and having your vehicles magically explode without them ever being hit, then yeah, sure, REALISM! Even by 2001 standards, the game was already vastly outpaced by most strategy titles…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Sudden Strike games are a series of real time tactics games set in world war II. During the missions you are not able to collect ressources and build a base and units like in Command & Conquer or Age of Empires. Depending on your progress you‘ll get some reinforcements from time to time, but apart from that you have to complete the mission objectives with the units you get at the start of the mission. The first and second Sudden Strike are almost identical in terms of graphics, sound and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the record, I like this game, it's a historic piece that puts things in perspective, the brutal difficulty, attention to detail(with some detriment because allies lack good heavy tanks), the scale (at the cost of hassle), each frame/pause a painting with a story, the punishing combat, a lot more focus on realism than the much more prevalent arcade-y approach to the genre but never in my right mind would I suggest someone plays this game unless I knew the person like my own brother.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ah the original. Still playing to this day after all these years. Classic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 - The graphics stand the test of time and the difficulty is absolutely perfect. It's the best WW2 RTS I've played and I keep coming back to it, even after 10+ years. Bargain.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The most legendary rts game of all times. Just buy it. You will never regret it. I've been waiting almost 10 years for this game to be re-released and the dream came true. This game perfectly simulates the battlefield which is a slaughterhouse of countless souls where infantry is worthless, armor is like eggshell and death is almost certain. and to steam: what about hidden stroke series?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sudden Strike Gold is a landmark real-time tactics game that represents an era when strategy titles were less concerned with spectacle and more focused on deliberate, thoughtful battlefield command. Developed by Fireglow and published by Kalypso Media Digital, this classic release bundles the original Sudden Strike with its major expansions, preserving a design philosophy that prioritizes realism, planning, and unit synergy over fast-paced micromanagement or traditional base-building mechanics.…

Sudden Strike Gold redefined the tactical RTS type back when I first laid my hands on it; it wasn't Empire Earth, it wasn't Age of Empires, it was just... Sudden Strike! If you're looking for a storyline you should probably go play Age of Empires instead, but the game is set in World War II... The game starts with you controlling a bunch of units that have an objective... and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember buying this game when I was a kid and playing it for hours. I was excited to rediscover it on Steam. I love this game and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical RTS games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Multiplayer: https://s.team/chat/KQAeGreQ Sudden Strike still holds its weight, the graphics have an extremely pleasant aesthetic, but it is the gameplay that had me purchase this game for the third time in my life just to have it on Steam. Other strategy games wish they could be this cool. In SS you get all your units at the start of a mission, and only get reinforcements from certain events. You might have an urge to select all -> attack move the entire group, but you will fail. You have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game isnt very good. If you like wwII RTS go with company of heros or close combat, COH being better than all IMHO. responsiveness to commands is sluggish. Warning of incoming strikes is none existant, basically all sudden your guys just die, lmao, I kid you not. graphics of the terrain arent bad, but soldiers look like little ants and have terrible pathfinding, they get stuck all the time. You have to micromanage their routes to where you want them to go. Same goes for SS2, SS3 wouldnt even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, I was playing it when I was a 10 year old in 2001, and now again many years later. Quite amazing that I got pretty far in the game when I was so young because its really difficult. Now I did finish the German campaign, Russian campaign, and at the end of the USA campaign, all on medium. Think the most difficult is the USA one, they don't have really good heavy tanks. My advice is to read some guides on steam, because there is a reasonable learning curve. Also I noticed that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks good and offers interesting tactical gameplay. Original soundtrack is not working. Some missions seem poorly balanced considering how destructive game units are designed to be.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To my mind, one of the better WW2 games, and it is Not just about the US being the Only Allied force. Great choice of units, and you play the missions how you want. The only downside is the way you can not upgrade your units, and the lack of reinforcements when and where you need them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best RTT ever. They don't make games like this anymore sadly.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply the best RTS. From the time it appered to this day. It has the engine that can handle masses of units and huge battles with combined arms. It also has basic level resource managmet (Ammo, health, experience) (dont play single player maps where the creator has given AI hundred artillery that fire in a fraction of second to your 1 man...thats just lazy map making)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2002 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah we dated for a while.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nope. This is an RTS game with no base building. The graphics are dated. No music. The story is generic and just for each mission. Bugs, yeah, and crashes. Runs on Win 7. Nostalgia alert. Extremely biased reviews. In no way this is a good game nowadays. The graphics are somewhat decent considering the age of this, but if you take other games released about those years, this game is bad-looking. The music is gone and you can't do anything about it because it is related to the Steam version.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really old style RTS, not in a good way
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite simply the best World War II game, if not best RTT game ever. The Sudden Strike 2 is the one everyone remembers but the rawness of this game gives it a place above the rest.

Cons - damn enemy artillery shoots like an automatic turret, no indication where enemy vehicles can spawn from the edge of the map and no indication if you will get 10 or 10000 more people as reinforcements in that mission 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nostalgic for me Does not hold up well in 2024 but an extremely realistic game (with troop movement and war tactics) to an extent where even 'easy' can take you hours on a single mission

The content and great game play from SSF. https://www.sudden-strike-maps.de/ still has all the maps. if you can get a few friend this game offers endless days of game play and MP fun. use that website and get all the OG content including mods etc. This will be forever the greatest PC game ever created. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs well, despite being much blurrier than the screenshots suggest. I've got a bit of beef with the mechanics, though, in that they were never explained or clearly indicated. I should be able to get a feel for what advantage, if any, putting artillery on a hill will have. So it's not just that they were primitive, which is more a matter of flavour. The game also moves very slowly, so be warned. All in all, it simply hasn't aged well, although I acknowledge its classic status.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play this game a lot when i was a kid, and it's still great. Only problem i have is these invisible mortars that keep bombarding my troops even when you are right on top of the point they are shooting from. I don't remember this game having an issue like this and it's really frustrating to loose troops on a glitch like that. Anyone else have the same problem?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game, and the others from the trilogy-pack because I hoped that it might be a cheaper alternative to Codename: Panzers, which I have on cd but can't play anymore, because the old, outdated copyright-protection software causes a conflict with win10 (at least that's what I think is going on). I was a bit disappointed. Of course, in this game you also have to work with limited troops, but there is one thing about Codename: Panzers that I really liked: You get some money after each…
