Developer Massive Entertainment
Ground Control is a real-time tactics video game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Sierra Studios, released for Microsoft Windows in 2000. The game focuses on a conflict between two factions vying for control of a planet and a series of alien artefacts contained on its surface, in which players take the role of an officer for each faction, working to achieve their objectives through using a variety… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

60 of 115 · most liked first⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Played this game back when I was just a kid. Loved the atmosphere (I've always been a fan of sci-fi), the lore, soundtrack, and the graphics were (they still are, especially Ground Control 2) amazing. This is a very good game for those who have been missing old school games of the RTS/Tactical genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just... an immortal classic that goes to show that, despite the graphics being dated (though workable), solid tactical gameplay mechanics and decent UI design can keep a game going well beyond its heyday. If you haven't played this before then it is well worth a try, with controls and gameplay mechanics that still ring true today despite it being made in 2000. One thing you may need to do is hop on PC Gaming Wiki and follow the instructions to install the "Ground Control Resolution Changer"…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Command APC under fire by friendly units"... All you Ground Control vets could not sleep one night without hearing the same friendly fire warning over and over again, yet, we never lost one unit due to friendly fire! Correct, Ground Control is back you chaps and chapettes, and it works flawlessly on Windows 10 I might add. For you fresh potential volunteer commanders for the Crayven Corporation, rest assure, you will meet battle where advanced battle tactics need to be used! You do not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Talk about revolutionary, this game was released in 2000 and it was way ahead of its time! While the graphics are dated, this game is still fun and enjoyable to play even 17 years later. It beats many of the more modern genre options in the way it implements combat and accounts for relevant combat variables such as lighting, visibility and terrain elevation. The most mind blowing for me at the time when I first played this game were the air battles - because of other RTS games I was used for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Both "Ground Control" games work absolutely fine on windows 7 and for the price are superb:) thank you for putting them on steam:). Tony Yorkshire:)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a classic game, one of the first full 3D RTS games with innovative feautures for that time - no base or unit building, realistic view and weapon ranges. Pure tactics without economy. It contains many hours of gameplay - 45 missions await you. If you like it, make sure to play its sequel Ground Control 2 (much nicer graphics, but gameplay is changed a bit to stimulate player to move and control more, well, ground instead of steadily bombarding everything wth artillery from a safe…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ground Control just like I remembered from 'the old days', highly recommended! (runs just fine on Win8.1)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ground Control is one of those games that i highly remember after all this time. Played it ~10-11 years ago (got it FREE from FilePlanet, who can remember that?), and even now, after countless computer upgrades, it has not lost it's shine (entirely), nor looks bad as other "old" games (and it runs fine on W10 without doing anything to boot). I have yet to see more RTS's with this style, where the units you have at the beginning are all you will ever get. The only game i can recall at the top…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“It's over, Anakin! I have the high ground!” ~Obi-Wan Kenobi In order to understand Ground Control, we should go back to the time it was released. See, the early 2000s (and this game was released exactly in 2000, in June) finally marked the end of the transition era for strategy games. And yes, strategies were a bit late. While genres like first-person shooters and platformers felt like they could seriously benefit from 3D, strategies?.. I mean, it's the genre about one unit going to war…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The age in this game really shows, and badly. Maps are mostly empty, and the combat is pretty boring. If you played this back in the day, I could see why you would buy it for nostalgia, but coming from someone who never played it before it's not that great.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ou yeah, glad to pay 5 eur for this amazing game. Working excellently on Win 10 and graphics are still quite good, considering how old the game is. But gameplay, gameplay is still very good and I am enjoying this game again a much. Even controlls are still accetable for such a old game. Highly recommended. I just put down all fallout 4, FM2016, NFS and playing this game. You can not cheat old valuable games and you will be keep going back to this game here nd there. buy it now
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this title as a teenager way back in 2000. It was one of the first RTS games I had played that ditched resource management and focused solely on squad tactics. The game succeeded wildly in hooking me into the story, through its excellent voice acting and deep gameplay mechanics. The visuals still impress me even today, 15 years later! Fun Fact: Jennifer Hale is the voice talent behind the game's protagonist, Sarah Parker. Her work alone makes the game a delight to play. I include…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PRO TIP: LOOK AT CUSTOMIZE DROPSHIP OPTIONS. YOU CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR FORCES!! with that out of the way, this is a phenominal game. its a tactical RTS with no base building or resource management. just pure combat and strategy. if there was a modern version of this game, it would be fantastic. this isnt without fault, however. its age makes it annoying to play, and QOL features are few and far between. despite being focused on combat, the majority of the gameplay is going to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ground Control aged and is not as stunning as it was in the year of 2000, but still remains a decent tactical RTS. There are fairly few games in this genre that focus on tactics rather than resource-gathering or unit-spam, so if you've never played it before you might still consider it nowadays. Be aware that this game is challenging. I must say I never managed to complete it back in the day due to the difficulty and I start having doubts if I can finish it now even on the easiest difficulty!…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hit and miss... The game is an RTS focused on combat. That means no base building or management of resources. You have a limited amount of troops for each mission and maybe some reinforcements in some missions. So you must cure and repair. The story is ok, nothing special but keeps ya interested. Music is also ok. Graphics are old but kinda nice for a game that was released almost 20 years ago. Along with the Dark Conspiracy expansion, there are 45 missions to play and it took me around 52…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had to refund this game. As usual I'm one of those people who played this for long hours back in the day. The game's still awesome although a bit slow, even more so if you compare it to the massive number of games that work towards speed and seizing the moment nowadays, from MOBAs to shooters. The good part about this game is that it's still unique. Most RTS games without base building barely have any customization or tactics, you just spam your units and play large armies that get tired…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as good as nostalgia made me remember it. In my memories, Ground Control was essentially sci-fi Myth, but it turns out I was remembering wrong. Myth had its share of issues, but it didn't have the mess of slow unit responses, terrible unit AI(I can't count the number of times that half my troops' fire, or their special attacks, were wasted because the front lines hit the back lines, or blasted away into terrain rather than moving an inch right or left) and incredibly unclear fields of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game does not work in Windows 7 nor any compaitablity modes. Do not buy!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A blast from the past. I played this quite a bit in 2000 alongside Shogun Total War. Those were the must have RTS of the time. Works well in modern systems and on the Deck. Truth be told its a bit outdated now and I wont play it that much, but its nice to have a piece of history in my library.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all time favorites; I come back to it about once a year. The Good: The game has lots of innovative features, even by comparison to today. * Armor values depend on facing and can render something immune to shots too low to pierce that armor * Tactics over strategy (no base building, no economy, etc) * Good difficulty and gives you the ability to challenge yourself if you want; you're usually not dictated to but rather you can play the game your way. For example, Mission 2 or 3…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Started playing this game as a child with GC demo it had 3 levels i had completed those in every possible way it was such a fun old game and then bought whole version as a teen i still play it to the day golden game !
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this while i was a kid, glad i can play it once again with a digital copy. rip my original CD, got lost somewhere...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was ten years old when this game came out. The gaming magazine that I loved was distributing a demo of the Ground Control and I was so impressed with everything I saved my allowances just to buy this game. The Science Fiction theme, memorable Soundtrack, the reactions of your units; it's all just in such a perfect place that they've found the brilliant balance of making an amazing game. - All you get is what you prepare before the mission; these type of games are not popular these days, it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alrighty. An RTS classic. Ground Control does not feature any base building. Pros: - Interesting gameplay (at the time) - Friendly Fire system - Several difficulty levels - Long, narrated story (45 missions in total) - Plethora of units - 2/3 factions Cons: - As I said the gameplay is no longer up to snuff. - Atrocious path finding. Units will get stuck frequently or get "lost". - Very slow moving units. - Story gets bland with the introduction of the addon. - Factions aren't unique enough.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic rts about controlling the ground
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This basically set the ground work for the squad based RTS. Massive absolutely nailed it with this gem. Game still holds up surprisingly well. Buy it and truly immerse yourself in that early 2000s vibe when everything was still great and the future seemed so bright.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Came because I heard it's a good RTS and because there's Jennifer Hale :P
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i don't wanna write a long review this time. a + to it is all i will do.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Massive Entertainment, the creators of World in Conflict, entered the RTS industry with Ground Control 1. It's a fantastic, surprisingly unique old-school game with features way ahead of its time. The graphics are dated, but it delivers a highly pleasant, nostalgic trip back to the year 2000. I cannot say the same for the abysmal expansion. Avoid Dark Conspiracy at all costs. It is stupidly imbalanced, the plot is a mess, the maps/triggers are broken, and the constant sudden ambushes are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ground Control Anthology is an ancient game from 2000, bundled with a DLC/mission pack. It's a whopping 23 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. The game is an old school RTS…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some of you may have suffered the indignity of reading my pompous and overly-verbose review of Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus. Now get ready for the sequel...about the prequel...which will be far, far worse. Just to clarify, I had played Ground Control 2 many years before I had ever laid my crusty, unwashed hands upon its pixely progenitor. In some ways I am glad I did, otherwise it might have coloured my perceptions of its offspring through rose-tinted glasses and lessened my appreciation…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rose-tinted glasses aside, Ground Control can be an exceptionally frustrating game. Not necessarily bad, but frustrating. The story is decent even if the graphics make it quite dated, but the gameplay itself becomes a slog from the sheer size of most campaign maps to the fact that you're going to watch most shots your units take miss completely. Buy it if it's on sale and you really like large strategy RTS, but give it a miss if you're more used to the likes of Starcraft.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, some things are still better than GC2 so highly recommended to pick them both up. There are mods to get it to play better a modern system. Does get a bit repetitive towards the end and personally I didn't rate the expansion massively. The cutscene videos are pretty awful but the gameplay is where it's at. I've had 46.4hrs of fun with it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IMO, one of the greatest rts games ever made.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Expansion pack doesn't work. So you are missing a huge chunk of the story between Ground Control 1 and Ground Control 2 Get the GOG version. This version sucks ass.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I still have the disc version of GC, but as it no longer runs properly the updated Anthology version has provided a welcome return to the glorious game I grew up with at a real bargain for only $5. P.S. If the cutscenes won't play, turn of the "Fullscreen Movie" option under the General tab. It will save you time with the sluggish customer service.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I grew up playing this a lot. Hands down my favorite RTS of all time. A little wonky playing on modern systems. Mouse sensitivity is a little flaky. Could definitely use an HD remaster. Crayven is my personal favorite because the Missile Defender and Repair Station are insanely good equipment and they have the best Anti-Air units in the whole game. Order is kinda lame because Energy Shield equipment only lasts 10 seconds as opposed to Missile Defender's 30 seconds. In a multiplayer setting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A non-biased quick look @ the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVIXbEO-oic One of my favourite RTS games of all time, now released on Steam complete with all its awesome DLC. Ground Control Anthology offers a thrilling RTS experience beloved by fans and critics alike. With a trendsetting mixture of 3D action and strategic combat, it’s still just as epic as it ever was. The year is 2419 and mankind is on the brink. War has devastated Earth, and mega-corporations take to the stars to fight…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This brings back memories. Finally Ground Control on Steam and working on windows 7! Two tiny issues I'm having. With 2 displays (both same resolution 1 on HDMI and 1 on VGA) it picks the secondary display to show the game instead of the primary. And no possibility to invert the camera control on the scroll button. But these are tiny issues which won't spoil the fun, works like a charm just like the old days.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I couldnt get this working on Windows 10. Black screen, even with supposed patch/fixes. =( It was amazing back in 2001 when I originally played it. Its a shame that the Steam release is not up to scratch for modern systems, because its such a great game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic RTS with great art direction, awesome vibes, terrible pathfinding, criminal mission design, and satanic amount of padding. A fine game to experience how things once were, and how much they've gotten better. Watch the plot synopsis if you care about it and at most play through the first campaign. They're too painful to be worth it otherwise.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game takes me back as a child i never finished this game but now as an adult i have begun to get further into the game then i ever could and i love it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some things cannot be forgotten! I started playing and I was transported back in time. I just wish online worked, I even remembered my old name and password just because of the menu sounds.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Takes me back to the good days
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A blast from the past! This Real Time Strategy game from 2000 is still able to capture your attention, requiring you to come up with a plan to defeat near-peer adversaries. With its cast of heroes and villains, and an endless supply of most types of "conventional" ammunition, you'll be able to spend hours trying different ways to reach your objective AND accomplish your mission with at least some of your forces still alive. Good hunting, Commander!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of real-time strategy, fast moving and unforgiving of poor decisions. A great game. I don't know why it wasn't more popular.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CHILDHOOD MEMORY mid 2000s and later My dad mistaken Quake, James Bond, or any related shooting game with this game. He didn't know what's the difference between a first and third person shooter. But this mistake turned out perfect. The game was actually fun. Although I had a cheap old computer back then and I had to experience serious slow lag. I appreciated the gesture my father gave me to buy this game to make me happy. Really fun war game with sci fi and science. It's basically "Starcraft"…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very solid RTS that still holds up to this day. Worth a shot
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completed the first few missions, so I will update as needed: I played this game a bit when it first came out and remember enjoying the visuals and combat (I was quite young at the time). Completely forgot about this game until recently and decided to get it while on sale. Visuals still hold up, especially considering its age. Combat/controls seem like they could be easily mastered by a RTS veteran, but still enjoyed by a newcomer who has never experienced the genre. No base building makes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my all-time favourite games growing up, and today. It’s all about good tactics, planning and overall strategy. You can run the missions however you want only limited by equipment and the geography. I love the story, fact you can name the squads, squad history stats, and it’s replay-ability. Plays great on Steam. Can’t recommend this game enough if you love strategy games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is no Starcraft clone. The game looks and feels like Starcraft at first glance, hell it even has a pretty decent character driven story to accompany you through it's campaign, however it soon becomes pretty clear that this is no Starcraft clone. For one thing there is no base building or unit construction. What you bring into the mission during the briefing is what you all have. Units move slow and react slower than Starcraft, emphesising correct unit composition, correct formation and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old School "AAA" RTS game, Where you have to actually view the terrain and move units accordanly.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An all time classic RTS, with emphasis on keeping your units alive and specific unit upgrades.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NOSTALGIA and thats it played in 2006-07 as a kid still enjoyed it very much after almost 20 years.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great old game. Nothing much compares to it in today's market.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly the game is really outdated in many aspects - graphics, controls, like of save option during a mission. Its good for nostalgia and those that want a real challenge.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a fun game even after all these years. Controls leave something to be desired, just like the used to, but its easy enough to get around.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid game even today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best RTS Game I've ever played since my childhood.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This great and runs very well. the controls are pretty aged and could do with a proper remaster. to get 1920x1080 i had to go to moddb and install a mod. it works well but the interface is kinda small.
