It’s too bad that the Chinese and Indian fronts got limited coverage in The World at War. Part of that was they had a hard limit of 26 hours, and my guess is that interviewees and film were limited. The game Strategic Command WWII in the Pacific gives a good feel for the scope of those fronts.

One of those games that is (relatively) easy to learn but difficult to master (5K hours and still trying!). One that has that one-more-turn-before-bed effect and is great fun to play. And that's before you get into PBEM++ games where all you knew about the game is thrown out the window as you learn new levels of complexity. Well worth a try.

Where to start... Well, since the community brings this up often, yes I did read the manual. I kept it open in a tab for hours to look up whatever I needed. It was often useless and vague or gave one-line descriptions that don't help. The game suffers from its railroading. Not to say railroading is fundamentally bad, but this particular brand of it is awful. Try playing the allies and damaging the German units. You have you HQ nearby, you're in good supply, you try to bomb them? Zero damage.…

As a solitaire experience, it's fun for a while. But the naval subroutines don't model the submarine war in the Atlantic at all well, and I would rather have no navies at all with this game. The naval sub-routine ruins the game for me every single time. I've tried to mods; I've done research. Because the trade route is static, the Allies can "go trauling for U-boats" with tremendous success. Spend 4 months trying to sneak out into the Atlantic and your U-boats will be crippled in 2, then you…

This is a great game system, hindered only by the absurdity and historical inaccuracy of its scenarios and campaigns. Naval units are individual vessels and submarines, rather than flotillas & squadrons that would better match the scale of the game. The order of battle for nearly every belligerent is truncated, ahistoric, and poorly researched. Scenarios should be designed at corps level and below, with very few army level units. I built a 1939 campaign based on a historic order of battle and…

I really struggle with this game. There's a lot to like about it: it's a basic turn-based hex wargame, the AI is reasonably competent, almost everything is about right and what you expect. You research, you move units around, decide how to strategically focus your efforts, and so on. So where does it go wrong for me? Firstly, there is some massive scripting. Germany, for instance, does not need to invade Norway and Denmark, it happens via an event that just hands them to Germany. What if you…

Here is a wargame that I believe almost gets it perfect. PERFECT! It's very easy to learn, especially when compared to Hearts of Iron IV or GG's War in the East. It's AI is fairly challenging, loads of scenarios and full campaigns, very editable with a good editor (this is so important as allows the player to play as they wish not how they must) and is still, after 10 years, enthusiastically supported by the Developers. I've asked two questions, at two different times, and had an answer the…

Seriously one of the best strategic level WW2 games available. While actually quite basic and simple (there are no deep simulations of individual units in a formation, such as their artillery and types as you would find in Decisive Campaigns or Gary Grisgby games), the sum of its parts leads to a highly satisfying a complex series of decisions. There no stacking on units, it is one per hex. The naval action is simply land combat without the restraint of supply and terrain, and so on. There is,…

A great introduction into Grandscale WW2 Wargames, Great balance of Historical Accuracy and "what if Scenarios" and an AI that is actually pretty capable (unlike HoI4). Multiplayer in this game is just so amazingly tense. Big question is just: Get this one or its "brother" Strategic Command World at War (I own and love both). Pros to get War in europe: -Way more detailed European Map -better Manouvering Space for Air and Ground combat -slower turn time allowing for more tense Fights…

After 43 hours of being the axis in europe. I invaded England and pushed all the way up until the damn scotts held the line and eventually forced back. The retreat from england went well as most of my forces were able to evacuate. Then I prepared for the invasion of europe. We did pretty well until it made sense to evacuate france as rear guards allowed the majority of our troops to make a line just south of belgium. I got spain to join the axis, italy helped out quite a bit on the east front.…

One of the best operational strategy games that have ever been produced. The "only one turn more" is so strong in this game. You set your own goals and objectives to achieve total victory. The balance between research - and what to research - and production is perfect. Always hard prioritizations. The map is so large so huge operational manouvers and front lines could be established. To surround enemies in pockets and starve them of supply is possible but not easy to achieve as long as there…

Bought and played the other game, Strategic Command: World War One and liked it so much I bought the other two Strategic Command Series, War in Europe and World at War. I'm midway thru the Fall Weiss mod for WiE and am having a blast. Such a cool game. With that 'play one more turn' feeling, it's a game you could spend hundreds of hours on. I like the game's replay-ability. There's a lot of ways to do it differently. The depth of unit options and tech is nice with how it all works together…

Excellent 'light' WW2 grand strategy game. In my opinion it has just the right scale and amount of detail without becoming excessive and unwieldy. Build and command land, air and naval forces, research new technology, make historical decisions (e.g. you can choose whether or not to honour the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact as the Axis, with consequences if you don't), and even apply diplomatic pressure to neutral nations. Strategic bombing, submarines and convoy raiding, partisans, and even German…

World at War is better than War in Europe, but all of these games are effectively the same. One of the most fulfilling wargames of all time. Unfortunately plagued with cheating AI, but the developers let you disable every single cheat if you're willing to sort through the script list. I think $40 is kind of crazy for this game, but, realistically, if you play each side once you'll get your money's worth. Barely. Kinda the upper limit of what is tolerable, but you get it. Absolute yes from me. While i agree that some mechanics are not 100% ideal, like stacking of unit cards, which does not exist, this game is essentially the one you want to play when you want to go for the close to reality experience of WW2, while HoI 4 is kinda the rewrite history edition. You can do this here as well, however it is a lot harder to stray from history in this game. If you want to go even more in depth you may enjoy the Grigsby games or such more, for me however the strategic…

There is a famous T-Shirt which reads "I am deeply conflicted about my military service." I feel the same way about this game! First the good parts though: - the game was an early Christmas present, and so it didn't directly cost anything for me, which was nice. - there is a surprising amount of historical detail and events and choice in the base scenario. Strategic Command is a decent game, but it has limited replay value and many of its mechanics are intentionally simplified to make the game more approachable. Many World War II strategy games address this through vibrant modding communities. Unfortunately, Strategic Command does not. For years I assumed the surprisingly small modding community and limited amount of community content meant the editor must be difficult to use. After finally trying it, I discovered the opposite. The game is easy to play. It covers all the aspects of the war, and you can play multiplayer against an opponet in a reasonable ammount of time. Games like Hearts of Iron take too much micromanaging and are too large. Strategic Command is streamlined to make the game quick and simple while still having to deal with all the problems of the war.

An enjoyable game albeit with some big flaws which are not easy to understand. The Germans have Armies, Corps and Divisions. The number bear no relation to the history even though they have historical designations. At this level the Germans should have Corps and Divisions ( and the French ). The counter mix is an unnecessary muddle. A major problem is airpower. Well balanced at the beginning aircraft can cause some casulties and disruption. However as the war progresses, allied aircraft can…

I am so on the fence when it comes to this game. I want to like it, but find myself bogged into static line fighting mid to late game. This I could have worked with as I keep pressing the enemy back further and further. It's a slog, but it is manageable. Same with the naval campaign, but I manage that as well because it feels like a balance of power thing where we are stalemated. What I do find difficult is the air campaign. This is a fun game. It's scale is much more detailed than the World at War version. And that puts a premium on tactics and smaller scale strategy. Again, my only complaint is with the AI. Fighting in Russia, no matter which side you are on, rapidly becomes hunting down isolated armies in cities. The defenders have nearly unlimited supply and reinforcements. So your army wanders from town to town blocked by isolated units that have to be crushed one by one like Medieval fortresses.

Quite similar to other SC games, especially the previous WW1 game, but with more emphasis on tank and mech units (for obvious reasons). Combat is more fast paced and "blitzy", again, to simulate the feel of what the warfare was like at the time. Otherwise it is similar to other SC games, if you are familiar with their core mechanics. Easy to pick up and play. Takes some time to get the nitty gritty underlying mechanics, though you can do well vs the AI even if you don't have total mastery over…

Modded campaigns tend to be a bit harder, since regular AI improved over the years but with some experience is still easy to deal with. It's certainly returned a high ROI - but buy it on sale. It reminds of the ancient SPI board game War in Europe - so many units that the scaling feels off. Especially off are naval fleet actions - there ARE no fleets as such: each unit takes up its own hex at all times. And I haven't the zones of control at sea since the equally ancient SPI Sixth Fleet. You will also never see a naval unit sink strike from one strike, as happened repeatedly historically - HSM Hood, HMS Barham, HMS Royal Oak,…

This is my preferred game in the Strategic Command series. The map size if very good and the game surprising well balanced. If I have issue with the game it is the ability for the Allied player to get the U.S. into the war a year and a half early which is completely implausible and really unbalances the game. Otherwise it is very good.

Qualified Yes: In general I like the strategic command series, I have ACW, WWI, WatW and this game War in Europe. The qualified part is that despite going to the lower levels, (Green) I find it too difficult to overcome the industrial might of the USSR. This probably historical 'reality' but doesn't make for a competitive game. I guess it is my not getting something in the mechanics as there are plenty of other players who win as Germany.
