60 of 95 · most liked firstDisclaimer: I've owned this game for quite a long time, well before it became available on steam. I've put literally hundreds of hours into it, so the time shown in my steam profile isn't reflective of my experience with the game. This is one of, if not the best operational level wargames I've played. It's the next logical step up in complexity for people who are comfortable with games like Panzer Corps, Unity of Command and Commander: The Great War. It is both realistic and complex, yet still…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly can´t recommend, if you like me expect at least some realism and don´t only want to "beat the system": - very bad tutorial, exhausting usability, ignorance of KISS-principles, manual explains nothing in detail - Very clunky, user unfriendly interface (no undo command, bad overview of units, ...) - very unrealistiv combat results (open field, non-entrenced, retreated morale-low infantry without AT-guns not only delays but outright defeats 100+ panzers..., crowded chaotic mega-stacks of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a refreshing old-school hex war-game that doesn't ignore the fact that computers can do book-keeping abstractions better and deeper then Europa type board games, You get all of the minutia of old school games with 100% less rules lawyering. So, yeah, you are going to have to work a little harder then a lot of these type games, but not much harder. The in-game tutorial gets you started, but if you don't go through the manual you're going to screw up. Maintaining operational and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like operational strategy games? Like WW2 scenarios? Like a 50% sale? then add to your basket (for the amount of hours your going to get out of this, i would buy even without the sale) There is something about this style of operational strategy wargaming that is appealing and Decisive campaigns nails just right, easy enough to get right into it, with enough depth to keep you occupied and learning, the maps, unit cards etc for this style of wargame excellent.. for me pure strategy gaming at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 30+ hours, I can't seem to get enough. Even after losing first campaign in Poland by 3 points. Always one more turn. The unique play makes it very interesting. I consider it one of the better operational level games I have played in a while. More meat than Unity of Command, yet not a huge learning curve either. Just have to think about what you want to do and how to do it without a lot of casualties and in the fastest amout of time. It is tough. I recommend it highly, but wait till a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The tutorial is good and gets right to the stuff you have to know. There is no standard interface for this kind of war game, so you need a good tutorial on how to set up attacks, get supply status etc. The icons are pretty clear for what they are doing and you get visual feedback on how your attacks went and why. Another good sign is you can let the AI run longer so it can find better moves. IF the AI is good I will add to this review. As of now, if you like wargames it is worth a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is just advanced tactics gold with steroids. But the most annoying thing is the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG LOAD times, saves take decades, turn passes take centuries.... Anyway, it's a good game, not so hard detailed as i would like, but if may fit for the ww2 newcomers. Also, the price is too salty for a game like this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has a good scale and is more approachable than some of the other grognard games. I'm looking forward to exploring it more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s a hex strategy game for this exact thing called Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa, where you play as the Germans invading the USSR in WWII and if you don’t follow ideological directives from Nazi leadership to do war crimes you can get fired and the game ends.
unlabelledView post →Barbarossa is the arguably the masterpiece of this series, but it was so good that I prompted me to pick up Blitzkrieg and Case blue to play the entire war. This as the first is the most mechanically oldschool and closest to its Advanced Tactics Gold roots, which makes it also closest to a straight up 1970s style hex and counter wargame. Possibly more conservative than ATG, being more tightly bound to historical simulation, but it has been tweaked up with quite a few quality of life and AI…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Those who want to try themselves as a general of the Wehrmacht army and conquer Poland, France, and Britain, or save these countries by playing for them, thereby preventing the Second World War - I advise you to play the game: (9 out of 10) Pros: ✅The game is divided into Campaigns. Battle for Poland, France, and Britain. ✅You can play for several factions: Germany, Britain, Poland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Slovakia. (Allies on the map are united into one army.) ✅Multiplayer for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent wargame. I hope this sells well, because Matrix needs to put more titles on Steam, at these great prices. I never try these games because they're too expensive to try from their website. The author of this title is really involved in the community. There are a couple graphical overhauls that update the maps and unit graphics really nicely. I'm really getting into the first scenario, which is exciting. I have had every Hearts of Iron, and I love those games, but to be honest I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meticulous action-by action micromanagement over a large scale. I think working at walmart would be more fun than this. This game has absolutely no macro to organize its micro. Just unit-by-unit control of hundreds of units taking one tiny step at a time. In theory it is simpler than Gary Grigsby's War in the Pacific, but it plays dumber, slower, more tediously, and less engagingly. The game also hates alt tabbing. It breaks the music track instantly and for the rest of your session unless you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not really bad but as an Advanced Tactics Gold player this DC campaigns series is weak. The supply system is cut down, no more railroad track building, no more Divison building, nothing. I was really hoping to have here a "better", newer, Advanced Tactics Gold. Unfortunately is is actually a better looking but weaker ATG successor. Good, the KI is cheating less(because there is no more real suply system, so bo-ho), but this is not a reason to call the DC series real good. Ok, you can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decisive Campaigns Series I recommend very warmly this turn based little gem strategy game at operational level with a very good intuitive interface&gameplay mechanics not overly convoluted , for those who want a greater challenge&have free time to spend - and also a more detailed historical background regarding the units in combat ( im still struggling with first map - Poland - but that's because I set the campaign on hard difficulty ) - the description on the game page is very accurate…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my favorite wargame and it isn't even close. It has a great scope, good operational and tactical combat, and so many varieties. MP options are amazing. Nothing like having 7 idiots try and cooperate to barely conquer Poland. There are a ton of number, but overall integrity and readiness should be enough for most people. Combat value is more of an estimate than anything, but troop quality is a big part of that. 10/10 DC3 please come out soon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, this game is well worth the money. Pleasently surprised by the way this game plays and am just exploring still but the game has many gems. The AI is good and does what a good opponent should do, I gave up on strategy games because of poor AI but this game has got me back on the hook. So I have played more and can seriously say this game is a gem. Do yourself a favour and give the manual a quick once over as there are a few details that actaully add to the gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decisive campaigns is a great series in terms of getting to play within the confines of history. Be sure to check out Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa, which I still don't see on Steam. That's how I got hooked on this series and I just bought Case Blue and Warsaw to Paris because I wanted more. That one is the latest in the series and it reflects the human aspect of operational command unlike you will find in other games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blitzkrieg ? - no meaningful air power, bombers do little damage even on large stacks of units in one hex... also there are very few planes available, or sorties, for a two day turn - no effective attack waves, you attack one stack once and the next attack get ridiculous penalties, remember it's a two days turn. Justification: the attacker is bogged down on the battlefield debris of the first attack and the second wave must wait the withdraw of the first one?! Sorry, but how stupid is this in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply an amazingly good WWII operational computer wargame. The controls are intuitive - the graphics, while not stunning, are very clear - the gameplay is both deep but with an ease of play which is surprising. Played against a human opponent, the fog of war and strategic options make this a top shelf game. Heavier than Unity of Command (another excellent game) simply due to unit density and operational options. Highly recommended for anyone into computer wargames.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I own all the VR Design games. Adv Tactics is good, but the 2 Decisive Campaigns games are much better. Nothing like hex turn based wargames.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very Good game - really challenging but not as overwhelming and time intensive as other even more complex games. I hope we will see one day a 1939-1945 campaign ;-D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Patience to read the manual and watch the tutorials pays dividends. It is a game that I could find myself playing for years, since it has enough detail and craftsmanship to interest an adult with a liking for history. I have purchased all of the "decisive campaigns" games I could find -- and anticipate that slowly gaining experience with this one will help gain skill at the others.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is subtle while very engrossing at the same time. The behind the scenes mechanics provides a fluid gameplay, and realistic outcomes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I own all 3 DC games, but have not played them much until recently. For me, they all hit that sweet spot between complexity and simplicity, and still be managable to play. It's not a monstergame where you have to put your life on hold for months in order to finish it, but there is a fair number of units to push around. You do have to read the manual and learn the rules,- otherwise it will be a frustrating experience, and you will cheat yourself out of a good wargame. It's a game for people…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty good intense game with both Poland and France scenarios. Poland is difficult to master as the German units do not seem to be able to use Blitzkrieg, Polish units are stacked so dense on the Western front that there are no gaps to exploit. German panzer and infantry just hit another enemy unit and get bogged down in attritional combat. You have to use massed artillery two or three turns to batter an enemy unit or stack into submission. All in all this is a good starter game if you are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent wargame with just the right dosis of granularity. You have to take account of command and control and suplies, but without bogging down in micro management. It´s my first "decisive campaigns" title and I´ll probably get the other ones too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best stragety games, I have played on a while. Deep Complexity and yet an easy interface to get to your goals. Well done!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As mentioned before, this is a game that sits between Panzer General and War in the East. The card system gives you plenty of variation for replays. Poland and France put up a bit more of a fight than you would expect but there would be no challenge if the campaign allowed Germany to steamroll the opposition. The campaign allows you to play as Germany in the Polish and French campaigns as well as Sealion if you perform well. It is possible to play as the opposing armies in scenarios. The game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent game A very enjoyable and easy to play game The Sealion scenario is an absolute delight to me Not that easy to beat at any level - well, not for me anyway - France 40 is probably the easiest - but a nice hard fight Absolutely recommended
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perfect balance between fun and realism. Abstracts the finnicky stuff, keeps the important parts richly detailed, and lets you relive history, employing similiar strategies that the germans and allies historically used. Shows you how much of a gamble Case White and Case Yellow really were as opposed to the cakewalks they were remembered as (and lets you do sealion. Very unrealistic, but a fun bonus).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the scale, the attention to detail, the way the game captures the feeling of operational level command. The only downside is the great number of clicks required to move and fight your forces and lack of an undo feature if you make a mistake. All in all I've really enjoyed the game so far and look forward to some of the other titles in the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PC Steam Duration: 45 hours to complete the campaign (all 3 linked scenarios). This is a fun hex and counter wargame. Moving a million troops blitzkreiging through France has rarely been more fun. AI turns can take a while, so I'd often leave the computer and get myself a snack or something while the AI acted. Enough game time here to make me feel like it was money well spent. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good operational strategic game with an excellent A.I. In fact one of the best I have seen for a long long time. Very addicting. You can try out several different routes and variants in the same scenario. The map is large and allow for huge encirclements if you are fast and clever enough but beware that the A.I is not silly and will eventually understand what you are doing. Updated 2021-01-27 Since my first review I have played the full campaign and also the netherlands scenario. In Case…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played original SSI games back when they were new and, targeted for very small player base. Decisive Campaigns and developer team VR Designs represents very same ideology to me. Detailed, semi realistic, fun to play games with actual historical events on a hex grid! Decisive Campaigns is not going to simulate realistic weather, or realistic artillery damage based on weather reports... This is simulation of war. With field generals and their special capabilities. Chain of command is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very old school game. The Battle System take some getting used to. For Simplicity sake, Its all about getting as close to Stacking Limit as possible, and have as many angles of attack as possible, while maintaining a ratio of combat that's favorable. Still playing, but loving the zen time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good operational wargame !
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game once you get used to the controls. It has fun historical variants, and I like the inclusion of cards you can play to give yourself an edge. Somewhat odd how Poland is by far hardest to defeat of all the allied countries, but all in all I had a lot of fun, definitely going to buy the rest of the series when I get cravings for more counter wargames.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is too hard for Germans. A waste of money. Have a good laugh at us all the way to the bank, come on!!! Is this acurate? 3 times! too hard . need more time for victory conditions?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it would have been a good game, but it did not have a manual so for a big game like this i did not have the time .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wrote a long and detailed review for Barbarosa so please see that for mega details. I just wanted to add that this is an excellent game and I highly recommend the whole series
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game! Lots of challanges.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →loved it. for experienced war gamers
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've picked this one in a sale or something years ago and finally gave it some time. It's great and I am having a blast. Great wargame, in the mid-tier of complexity. No Gary Grigsby but no panzer corp/Hex of Steel either. It's pretty straightforward but deeper than it looks and requires some thinking. It's dated (16 years and counting), clunky because of that age and sometime frustrating but it also has its charms. I like the visual and the unit cards. In term of balance, it's pretty…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decisive Campaigns: THE BLITZKRIEG is really easy to learn and play. I have been having a lot of fun playing it. It is both historically accurate and fun from a game play perspective. The graphics and regimental portraits are really good too in my opinion. The portraits also change dynamically depending on the hex's type of terrain that the unit is in which I think is very cool. It has multiplayer, but it is by email which is a downside, but I think you could have several people play the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommend this game highly. What you see written in the description (in the store) is exactly what you get, so if that's your thing, go for it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, even though it's the oldest DC game. I really, really wish Vic would bring PBEM++ and mouse capture to this, it's a travesty that it doesn't have it. Other than that, 100% recommend this
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →massive turns but it is decent
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris is an operational-level World War II wargame developed by VR Designs and published by Matrix Games that focuses on the explosive opening phase of the conflict, where speed, coordination, and planning defined the outcome of entire nations. Rather than centering on individual battles or tactical skirmishes, the game places the player in charge of large formations and long-term objectives, asking them to think like a high command officer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a big fan of the whole Decisive series and this is yet another example of how they use the same overarching system with tweaks to make you, the player, deal with historical issues without completely cramping creativity and freedom. Excellent.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game and the White scenario was very challenging until I realised how to beat it. I applied the same strategy to the Yellow scenario and, although still challenging, managed to win the first time. The Yellow scenario is great because of the vast landscape and when you finally breakout a strategic onslaught can be achieved - unfortunately just as it happened in 1940.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Irritatingly difficult and unrealistic game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the better WW2 strategies, but the disadvantage with this game is limited multiplayer its play by email
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is somewhat short with few maps, and with clunky interface as most wargames. Reassigning divisions to closest HQ... ugh. Still, was fun to do campaign even if AI is somewhat passive, it still gives enough challenge. Buy it if you want a wargame for 20 hours, moderately fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First tried this franchise with Case Blue and really enjoyed the historical accuracy, challenging AI and mechanics of the game. Picked up this title when it was on offer and was not disappointed. The campaign game takes you from the invasion of Poland to the Western campaign of 1940 and then on to Operation Sealion. Currently racing my panzers through the beleagured Belgian and British forces and loving it! Now to finish off the French and invade Britain!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great operational game. Panzers? Check. Kessels? Check. ... Profit? Check. A decade ago, Matrix games released "Korsun Pocket", and then "Battles of Normandy". Those were a revelation for me. Fantastic operational games oncompassing some of the most iconic WW2 engagements (particularly the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy). Decisive Campains: the Blitzkrieg is the closest Steam has come to good old Korsun Pocket. Regiment-level operational campaigns. This one covers Poland, France & Sealion.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Several years ago, I played Battles in Normandy (Decisive Battles Series) by SSG distributed by Matrix games. This game is far much better version of the system. Even though the game is developed by the different company, Developers acknowledeged that they were inspired by the decisive battles series. Currently about 17 hours in. I lost my first campaign by 6 VP but learned a lot about the game mechanics. I am currently tyring my second attempt for the case White. Card choice, random events…
