60 of 159 · most liked firstMatrix promotes the game as "WarPlan is an incredibly accurate World War II simulation engine." "Incredibly accurate?" Hardly, other than maybe trying to simulate number of combatants involved. Every aspect of the game is highly abstracted, with an end result as far removed from "incredibly accurate" as imaginable. Really tried to like this game. Actually there are some aspects of the game I feel were innovative. For example, unit operation points that allows units multiple attacks per…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan is excellent in that it gives players a computer wargame that is, as the devs say, easy to learn and difficult to master. Unlike some other wargames like War in the East, the difficulty in mastering the game doesn't come from learning how to deal with every bit of minutiae hidden in one menu or another; a player halfway experienced with these types of games can get the gist of things in an hour or so. Instead, a player must learn how to actually use all those options to their advantage.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Zero hours review? Yes. I have been playing this game for three months off Steam. War Plan knows what it wants to be: a grand strategy, no frills, wargame that pays homage to classic board games like Avalon Hill’s Third Reich. Pros: + Good manual, plenty of helpful tutorials online + It’s a wargame that plays like a wargame when played by wargamers. Yes, this is a good thing. + Excellent post-release support by the developer + Full moddability + Perfect for PBEM + Good tactical AI Cons: - The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Read the full review here: https://saveorquit.com/2021/02/08/review-warplan/ WarPlan may look like one of those most dry and technical "hardcore realistic" strategy games, but while its interface certainly lacks updating, the "combining the best of 50 years of strategy gaming" moniker is broadly accurate when it comes to actual gameplay. WarPlan manages to combine some of the ideas I've loved in some strategy games that have unfortunately not caught on with most other strategy games. Unity…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game went out more than a year ago. I'm a big fan of wargames. This game promised a new take on the WW2 conflict and I've played more than a hundred of hours in games like World in Flames, Strategic Command or Hearts of Iron. At first, I doubted to buy this game because of the comments. They advise to wait because of the bugged game, the poor AI and other problems wih the Unity implementation. I waited. I went through all the video tutorials (weird that they were in Youtube instead of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished Allied campaign in around 20 hour play time. Fun but a little disappointing. The AI does play too passively. The German war machine was unable to capture Paris and, therefore, Italy never joined the Axis. I captured all Germany's production assets in September 1942. All over 4 months after the Soviet Union joins the Allies. Strangely, the game expects me to keep playing even though there are no Axis countries. ....... Well after around 100 hours of play time I've completed my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Writing this early to give this game the positive boost is richly deserves. The good: The most complex "under the hood" wargame since DC:Barbarossa; but perhaps the fewest units to manage for a game of this scope in my memory. Many novel systems to reduce micromanagement, but rather requires planning expressed in both production and the multiple actions per unit per turn. The ying/yang: The UI is above average, but the QoL is not mostly because the in game help and hover info, e.g.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very scripted game. For some things, like US invasion of Vichy controlled North Africa ships just materialize out of thin air. Soviet Union declares war on Germany although it's army can just run away. When fighting gets large, like in SSSR, the game becomes very tedious. It's unclear what are behind the scenes limits, sometimes you can build divisions, sometimes you can't. Trade is unclear and overall the GUI is not helpful. It looks good in the beginning, but after early war it grinds down…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a mix between Hearts of Iron and Gary Grigsby's Series. The game is nice, but it lacks the level of detail both of those two games. It's a competent strategy game, but it might upset the ww2 hard core detailist fans. For example, want to known what kind of equipment such unit uses? Forget it, you will only get a superficial resume (1939 Assault Infantry or Heavy Tanks). For those, used to a more detailled level of information, the game will disappoint a little bit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did you ever want Panzer General to be backed by an economic model, tie into operational level planning, have a logistics model, etc? I did. I'm not saying that's EXACTLY what this is. But there's something there. This games, for me, combines the simple clean lines and fun of PG with cool operational/economic/event based happenings. That, really, is selling the game short. But I just like the feel of it. Let me give you an idea of what I'm trying to convey. Say you are trying to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a lot of war games over the last 40 years- cut my teeth as a kid on Avalon Hill and SPI board games. have to admit this one was a little daunting at first in regards to the game mechanics; production and resource management, ect. As long as you start with the small scenarios first to figure out unit capabilities, supply, and so forth, you should be fine. Trial and error is the best way to learn. This is not a quick gratification sort of game- units don't instantly heal and gain…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan has been a great surprise and I highly recommend it to any who played the old hex grid board games. I started out playing tabletop war games such as AH's Third Reich and Russian Front. This has much the same feel but removes the need for charts and die rolls. The game is however, balanced so it will not always have a historical outcome. Abstract representation reduces the need for constant micro-management, with plenty of room to min/max. For example, the tech trees - if you are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only recently moved to steam version. About 15 completed PvP games before the move and 6 ongoing. As others have written, this game is strategic in the same broad category as Strategic command. It is more accessible that the likes of Hearts of Iron or a Gary Grigsby game though I play these too. It is quite easy to pick up if you have experience of similar genre games, but a complex game to master. Another reviewer complained that the publisher Matrix said it was an 'incredibly accurate' WWII…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't find the game to be particular enjoyable or the gameplay particularly engaging. The font size was small for my eyes, the AI was not as not challenging, historical accuracy was meh (no slovakian units or polish airforce), the earliest campaign was 1939, and the unit selection was limited (no militia units? so much for realism). Research seemed uninteresting as did production. Struggled to follow what was going on in the game. Did not encounter any bugs, so kudos to the developer…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →well its an ok game but i must say either im a tactical and strategic mastermind or the A.I. is extremely incompetent. I won 3 games as axis and 1 as allies with no problem 1 axis game on max difficulty (little harder) they need to upgrade the A.I.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan is the best WWII strategic game I've ever played! Most importantly, it has innovative systems to impose realistic constraints on naval and amphibious operations. Unlike Strategic Command, you can't expect to supply the entire US Army from a single port. Nor can you easily invade in the face of enemy naval or air superiority. At the same time, the supply and interdiction systems do not require any micromanagement. The AI is good as well, at least on the defensive. It reacts…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as hard as War in the East but more involved than Strategic Command
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The work of basically a single guy and manages to be pretty great. The game is a strategic level wargame covering WWII in Europe. It is in some ways similar to the Strategic Command series (the developer did some work on those games) but it has its own flavor. It has less historical events but manages to execute a better war simulation of the conflict. If you are familiar with board war games like World in Flames, you will notice some similarities in design ethos. It is probably the most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A simple hex and counters WW2 game. Ideal for beginners to the genre, but enough detail to still be fun to play for experienced players. I always applaud standard NATO / APP6 symbology as well! Single-Counter-Per-Hex games are not something I usually like, particularly at this scale where you could realistically expect combined arms units in a single hex. But it works OK in this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played this game since it's very beginning before it ever came to steam. (Matrix version). This is a fun game to play, especially after a long day at work. You can easily pick up where you left off even after not playing for a day or two. This is a turn base (two week turns), board game style strategic-level game that is easy enough to learn but by no means is it simple. The game allows you to be a Supreme Commander in the European theatre and you will face similar challenges that they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disapointing. Very low IA. Played the 1941 campaign. Moscow falls easily in september.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There was an excellent review, by Splinter47, which I neglected to heed before I purchased this game. I did spend a bit of time going over the tutorials, and watching the videos, however I expected a little more depth, and a little more visibility into the economic side of things. In short, I wanted War in the East/West with an economic model that I could manage, and this is closer to the Strategic Command series of games with a somewhat better supply system. Build armor unit with X number of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I give WarPlan a conditional yes. If it's on sale, then go for it. If it's not on sale, then only get it if you have another person to play against. Things I like: - One of the better games at simulating the Axis oil restraints. Want Italy's fleet to be active in the Mediteranean? Then Germany better send them Oil. Want Italy to build Mechanized units, then better send them more oil. Want the German fleet to be active. Too bad, you've sent too much of your oil to Italy. - One of the better…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →there is zero , not 10% or 5% intelligence, ZERO. i created a game where Poland was a bit more prepared. 15 turns later Germany was still moving around Poland doing nothing. The game ended with Poland still in the game. When u doing well it gives you bad weather. it controls the game with weather. You will enjoy the 1st game you play, after that it becomes very, very boring. Dont waste your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has scenarios... The 1939 is how to learn land combat. The 1940 is how to build armies... The 1941 the fun begins... The game is fun and easy to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended. I like the scale a lot. The game is similar to strategic command ( I was worried when I saw it that it was just a re-skin of the older game). The AI is decent and the game plays realistically in regards to WW2 - This is not some alternative history fantasy game like Hearts of Iron. Nor is so detailed and bogged down that it takes hours to play turn (like GG East Front). Overall, I have enjoyed the myself. My only complaint is that the supply system is strange in that it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This simulation gets so many things right. It can be as complicated as you want yet can be played by letting the computer take care of the mundane tasks. The choices are there if you want to deal with them or you can play the commander and chief and let the AI do the detailed work. Example: you can have your units reinforced automatically or you can decide which ones need priority. The naval game is very well done with the hundreds of convoys and escorts handled by the AI while you can run a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan is a turn-based strategy and simulation game focused on World War II. It's from Slitherine, better known as "Paragon from Temu", who named their entire business after one of the student houses in J.K. Rowlings childrens books in the "Harry Potter" series. Making this "Harry Potter and the Stupidly Overpriced and Underdelivering Wargame". The concept centers around recreating World War II in great detail, with 70 potential countries. You manage the resources and units of different…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are old school and like playing classic board games WarPlan should be in your library. It does a good job of balancing diplomatic, economic and game mechanics to fight out WW2 in Europe.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not too sure why I was put off by this game, but heard a few negative comments and kept pausing on the but button. I cant comment on human vs human games as I only play vs the AI. But having had a couple of goes as both Axis and Allies there is a lot to like and investigate in the game. If you're fans of the Strategic Command games you can jump straight on in, but beware there are many differences. It definitely takes a lot of time to understand the logistics, supply and manpower…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main issue I have with this game is the fact that the games is designed to play as a block of nations rather than individual countries. While this makes for an interesting concept is limits the game to the point that you either play as the allies or the axis. This to me is a major flaw.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →War plan is a fairly easy game to grasp and I would recommend it if you are someone looking for something between Strategic Command and Gary Grigsby's Games. It's a great middle ground strategy game with enough elements of supply and logistics to give this grand operational game what it needs to work. 1. Read the manual some, at least skim it and maybe check out the tutorials 2. Jump in and play the Polish campaign 2-3 times to get the hang of ground operations 3. Once over all the menus and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Closest things to the old AH Third Reich that I have played on the PC ... love it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has a good feel for a WW2 European Theater grand strategy game. Not a difficult game to play, yet it has a lot of strategic options for each player. I just started playing and feel I will spend quite a few hours learning more about the many strategic options available for each country.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's refreshing to play a game that focuses solely on the wargaming experience and managing the units, mostly just the war aspect of the game, I like that the micro management is not intensive especially for the naval units so that I don't have to click on every single unit on the map. The difficulty is fine, I've found that setting computer bonus experience on Elite difficulty and the computer bonus effectiveness to Excellent tends to work most of the time, like every strategy game that is a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Takes me back to days of board games, Africa Campaign, Russian Campaign, D-Day etc, only in computer form. The game designer has mastered the balance between easy to learn but hard to master, as behind the basic game play are nuances such as support trucks and replacement rate settings which have a large impact on the results. The gameplay has deliberately been made to avoid the micromanagement of some games and there are not too many units so isn't hard to keep track of everything that is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, fills the middle ground with Grisbys WITP being the Gold standard, the dev has got a good AI system going with an approachable user interface, while not in the league of Grisbys, it is a very welcome addition to the pacific war theatre of WW2. Highly recommend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid game: huge scope and plenty of opportunity for non-historical play, without being overly complex. Top marks
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan is the first computer wargame for the whole European Theatre that brings me the same kind pleasure as the tabletop wargames (such as ETO and AETO) while incorporating all the subtleties that a boardgame can not. It finds an almost perfect balance between too much or not enough details and obviously great care was put into the historical feeling while still allowing for realistic strategic freedom. Also, the designer is continuously updating the game and taking into consideration the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WarPlan is the best WWII strategic game I have played so far... I enjoy it more than games like HoI IV or War in the East which are too tedious and complicated and Strategic Command WWII which is too simple and not realistic to my taste. I think WarPlan strikes the right balance between realism and playability. There are all the main mechanisms under the hood to make it realistic without the need to micromanage things that won't change the course of the war. I think it makes a lot of sense to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So many better games covering this topic - what a waste of money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Concerned this might not end well. Tutorials are lightning fast and overloads first time player. Will give it a shot but the start concerns me. Will invest time. Hope it isn't time wasted. I would think not. Always wanted to learn how to play this type of game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was watching this game before it was released and bought it the minute it was available. So while my review says 0.4 hours, I estimate I have played over 100 hours. As a new game system, I knew there would be a combination of fixes, changes and balancing, and I was right. But the foundation of the system was beautiful, the dev support awesome and the /growth of the system over the past few months has been incredible. It was a fun and engrossing game day 1 and it has only gotten better. For…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great game. Land sea and air are well represented (you cant just 'box in' subs with a load of BBs lol). Managed to get upto 1942 so far (against the AI) on normal mode i got crushed badly. Playing now on the easy mode. Highly recommended
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game. Many different directions that strategy can take means great replayability. There’s a lot going on under the hood which makes war planning intricate and really enjoyable. Definitely not as straightforward as it first appears. My only complaint is the manual. Not always crystal clear and could be organized better. Could do with more illustrative examples. Particularly with naval detection and combat. It seems like developer support is excellent and ongoing. Overall I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although this game has a simplistic old school feel to it, the intimate details and rapid turns creates what I think is going to evolve into an amazing and challenging mission.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nicely done WW2 grand strategy game. Terrific UI. Right click and drag lets you smooth scroll the map, mouse wheel zooms in and out quickly and with a good variety of zoom settings. The weather is an absolute bear, but also does a nice job forcing you into timetables that are reasonably historic. Attacking in even regular rain is very difficult, so you'll spend more time regrouping and building up for a big offensive. So many partisans! It's almost as if they think I'm the baddie!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hi, do you want to learn to play a game with no in-game tutorial and some videos narrated by someone who speaks incomprehensible English (even their own mod says so!)? Then this game is for you! Otherwise, please look elsewhere. Ain't nobody got time for that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not played much, Simple; there are much better games in that old Panzer General style on market here. Look on Hex of Steel if you are interested in this kind of games. Its better, cheaper and have much more players ready to play together. Warplan looks sometimes like to be not flexible to any change in war history. My opinion is neutral, but here we have only positive or negative option to choose. Generally i buyed it but not playing because i have other better games. Looks like game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At 44 hours I still just begin to grasp the game. Even if you read the manual some mechanics are not completely explained and a lot of information is hidden in the game especially about your opponent. There are some bugs, mostly not displaying stuff correctly. Despite all of that, it is a great game but not for the faint hearted. It is a must have for hard core strategy gamers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a big game and fun when you learn all the ins and outs of the game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The spiritual computer version of Avalon Hill's Rise and Decline of the Third Reich. A gem of a grand strategy game encompassing the duration of the war in Europe and North Africa. Also has several shorter, interesting scenarios (including a scenarios designed for the USMC University.) Note: Redeemed keys for a free copy from Slitherine's SteamElements store which provides keys for games based on hours viewing their Twitch Streams. The Good: Can be played hotseat or multiplayer (I have not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fast turn times vs AI, load times are fast. Map and tokens are very clear and readable. You can zoom out to see the full map which makes it easy to keep track of what's going. Has a lot of nice overlay options for the map such as previous moves and battles. Good level of complexity and depth on the strategic front. Despite being middle of the pack in terms of complexity (with SC being Easy and GG being Hard) it is still very approachable and easy to pick up and play. Where it starts to fall…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I playtested the game and have hundreds of hours into it, notwithstanding the few hours shown here in my steam account. Warplan is the best computer strategic/operational level war in Europe game I've played, going back 30 or so years. Lots of depth, but it is all presented so well that it never seems complicated. Such aspects as logistics and supply, production, convoys, ASW, research and technology, unit specialization, reinforcements, upgrades - all are in the game, but are right at the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The wargame I have been waiting to play. Has all the elements of a great strategic game of WW2. Easy to access but sophisticated and elegant. Doesn't come any better.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great wargame. I wish it were easier to stack units and combine them a little more. But other than that, it's a decent wargame. Very very addictive. I wonder about counter-attacks and the enemy being to docile, too easy to fake out, its too easy to move your units where you want them. Fog of war is a bit of a disappointment. But you can say that about most of these games. In the real life, you have to do some serious recon to get an idea of what the enemy is up to. This game,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warplan is definitely easy to pick up and play, but there is a lot of complexity "under the hood." Oil was essential to the nations involved in WW2, and this game reflects that historical fact. Ships, planes, tanks, and trucks need fuel to move, attack, and defend. Supply is critical. HQ units can help boost supply to units, and you can also boost a unit's strength by clicking on truck supply, as long as you've built truck supply into your production queue. You can also gain specialty…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful map and unit counters. Excellent AI. Regular updates from a very diligent developer. What's not to love?!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note, I have many more hours with this game than my Steam profile shows, having bought it months earlier through Matrix. This is an excellent game, which all people who have an interest in WW2 grand strategy should buy. It has many new and innovative systems, which along with the focus on minimising micromanagement provide a great experience. Some examples (1) supply is streamlined, but you will need to capture plenty of ports if you want to have a large force invading through France as the…
