Another great game in the SC family. I love those games for 20 years now and played every one. For me, they always hit the right spot between complexity and playability. Yes, many aspects are abstract. There are no different ressources like oil, only MPPs (military production points). There is no micro management into the smalles detail. But I want to play a game and do not want to do work after i come home from work. The game is still very deep with many well thought out aspects. The…

The Grandstategy game I have waited for the last 5 years, its finally a grandstrategy game covering the pacific that aint super shallow or takes you 2000 h to finish one campaign (looking at you Gary Grigsby WiTP!). The gameplay in Strategic command is easy to learn hard to master and its the perfect grandstrategy game for 1v1 Multiplayer via Hotseat or Play by Email. I only wish they would have improved naval combat a slight bit compared to their previous games, as the pacific is obviously…

I'm torn about this review because this is my first time playing the Strategic Command series and it is overall a fairly fun war gaming system. However the reason I have to give this a negative review is because I don't think the Pacific War in WW2 was a good idea for a system that fails so spectacularly at naval warfare. On land the one-unit-per-tile restriction occasionally grates but overall it makes the game simpler to manage without damaging the sense of verisimilitude unduly. Having…

Surprised by this game. I've played war in europe and was uninterested after a few turns. Still, the prospect of a fresh take on the pacific war intrigued me enough to buy this one. Immediately I was sucked in by the flavor and scope, combined with the relatively quick playing turns and low unit count. I'm not usually a fan of low unit counts, my favorite wargames are WitE and WDS Panzer Campaigns, but this is one of the few where it just clicks, and not at an expense to detail. The whole…

There are several major problems with the Japanese Order of Battle in the Day of Infamy Campaign. The CVs Hiryu, Kaga, and Zuikaku were all part of the Pearl Harbor Strike Force and should be present at the start of the campaign. In addition, CVL Zuiho should be present at start as well. In the campaign, the Japanese are forced to buy these units and they will not arrive until 1943 at the earliest. This seems to be a rather egregious error and severely impacts Japan both militarily and…

Don't waste your money on this, which would be better spent on the global version of the game that has a lot of re-playability. This one has issues with scale, economics, orders of battle, non-existent AI and fleet management. The main game is fundamentally land based and works quite well, with space for aircraft even with a lack of stacking and just about handles naval as a tertiary consideration. Pretty much anyone interested in playing Japan are also interested in fleet encounters dominated…

Someone else who reviewed the game put it best. They made a game where the ships are the armies but didn't bother improving the system to make the Naval War game fun or engaging in any capacity. There are not many Pacific War games out there, but this one is not worth playing. Its pretty convoluted and a mess, reading the manual is hardly much help at explaining anything whatsoever. And I did read it multiple times but it still doesn't explain to me why my Submarine does 0 Damage to the…

Another great game from the Strategic Command team. Very fun game just like SC:Europe. Note to DEVS...PLEASE DO A WORLD WAR 2 COVERING THE WHOLE WORLD AT THIS SCALE BUT WITH BRIGADES, DIVISIONS, ETC...just like SC:Europe. Many of us out here, I believe, really want this. (Different scale and type of units, different levels of fortifications, ability to combine smaller units into larger units, and the like).

It’s too bad that the Chinese and Indian fronts got limited coverage in The World at War. Part of that was they had a hard limit of 26 hours, and my guess is that interviewees and film were limited. The game Strategic Command WWII in the Pacific gives a good feel for the scope of those fronts.

I like the other games in the series, but this one really didn't click for me. It's sort of hard to say exactly what I didn't like about it, but it felt "off." I get that the Pacific War is hard to design for, but the naval war system in the game engine is wholly inadequate. Having fewer turns with longer calendar times means that ship speed has to be nerfed so that they don't unrealistically teleport across the map. At the same time, ships could cover far more distance than land units could,…

Really great addition to the series. It follows the others in doing a great job simulating the strategic aspects of the conflict, but whilst being easy to learn and play (and doesn’t take 2 years to finish a game unlike a certain other Pacific war title lol). I am also impressed with the AI. It’s given some help and cheats (see manual), but in a way that has yet to feel like it is. Like other games in the series it’s been one of the better AI by far in war games. Which alone makes this game…

This is the first WW2 Pacific wargame that I've found that really "works". The number of units is enough for operational and strategic play without being a chore to manage. Production and research are actually fun to control. The naval movement, supply and combat are the best I've seen in this scale of a wargame, and there is quite a bit to learn about balancing sea, air, and land units in a realistic but playable WW2 operational war. There is alot "under the hood" in this game so while you…

SO i really like these games, and was excited for this one, but seriously, save your money. It is literally just the pacific corner of WW2 World at War, same map, same everything, and isnt very engaging at all. It offers nothing new, or different. I wish I hadnt of spent $60 to find out I already own this game, and the one i own is a better version.

Initial thoughts after playing the 1941 to conclusion with default settings, achieving a minor Japanese victory. The AI is generally strong, making a few moves that I didn't anticipate. Gameplay wise, it's Strategic Command; if you like it, you'll enjoy this game. I did enjoy the resource management required to fight across the entire Pacific. It reinforces how, in the Pacific War, one had to make decisions about what to reinforce, where to make a stand, and where to let your defense be in the…

The naval system is a fail. All in all a real stinker. The order of battle is wrong. Very inaccurate. Where are the Japan CV's at in 1941? So many are missing and need to be built. Did you forget that part? The stacking system is a general failure too. Getting tired of the crap slitherine/Matrix is pumping out. Sub par crap.

A good beer and pretzel game. I wish you could stack units, but that' the way the SC games are designed and I get why they do it. But the War in the Pacific? Arguably, the most lopsided war for the past 500 years. Japan had ZERO chance to win. If you can beat the allies in this game, then something's wrong with it. Playing as the Japanese, I'll give the game credit for an accurate atmosphere. You can't do anything in China, and you actually feel "victory disease" well into 1942 because…

The original game is awesome, and by now lots of players are well aware of it. But the "Empires" DLC is new, and deserving of a review. As one would expect of a "Fury" game, the DLC is well researched and obviously well tested. Download and installation are easy-peasy. Game play is smooth, starting positions make sense and reflect the afore-mentioned research. I agree with the developers comment that Chinese military tech is tepid compared to the red-hot Japanese capability. Yet, it is…

Extremely challenging, but an excellent interface and UI with a tried and tested "open ended" strategy approach. The scale of "Pacific" feels just right, and the game keeps you on the edge despite the inevitable industrial might of the US prevailing most of the time. I have yet to see a Japanese victory.

I am REALLY enjoying this game, I was totally lost at first, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Watching tutorials on YouTube helps a ton. I was afraid that it was going to be too detailed like War in the Pacific, but this game hits the right balance between super detailed and beer and pretzels.

Strategic Command WWII: War in the Pacific is a turn-based grand strategy game developed by Fury Software and published by Matrix Games that tackles one of the most demanding and logistically complex theaters of the Second World War. Rather than focusing on fast-moving land campaigns, the game places its emphasis on the vast distances, naval dominance, and long-term planning that defined the Pacific conflict. From the opening moments, it is clear that this is a game about patience, foresight,…

Strategic Command is one of my all time favorites. It's somewhat a-historical due to the mechanics of the game, yet, it captures the essence of the war and that's all that matters in my mind. This is a great game.

Another solid entry in the Strategic Command series! I find these games to be in a sweet spot of complexity and scope, letting you have the freedom to direct grand strategy on your own terms, with room for plausible alternative history to play out. You have control over production, research, and of course unit movements, but it's never overwhelming nor too simple. Some may be irked by the one unit per hex rules, and the naval combat which is a bit too simplistic for the subject matter. Overall,…

Designer has no concept of how supply actually works. Not every little podunk town can supply the bulk of an army, especially if surrounded and if captured from enemy. Nor can it generate replacements for units in or nearby. Even cardboard games got this right. Pushing no game end button has no effect. Game is fun to play but supply flaws make it a joke.

I played a game called pacific war (by Gary Grigsby) some 35+ years ago. It ran in a dos window, was fun, and I enjoyed playing it. The current version of this game appeared much too involved as compared to pac war 35+ years ago. I searched and came across SC War in the Pacific. Some complexity, but appeared much easier to play than the current Pac War by Gray Grigsby. Another great entry in the Strategic Command series. Like all the games, it has its issues with unrealistic naval and air warfare but this is unavoidable when one turn is two weeks long. All the great naval vessels of the Pacific War are here. Great naval battles will still happen. Alternate strategies are abundant. However, you WILL feel the economic pressure playing as the Japanese. Playing as Japan, you will be hard pressed to find that spending balance between resupply, reinforce, R&D, and…

I have played 12 hours of PBEM (MP) as both Allies & Axis. I will update this once I've completed a bunch of games. So far I'd give SC Pacific a 10/10, great game. I've probably logged 5k hours (all PBEM) playing the Europe game but honestly I didn't have a high opinion of SC ACW and only played SC WaW a few times because of the scale. Looks fun! This series is an awesome war game series. Update The Iwo Jima scenario is a great introductory scenario, and it just feels right. As the USA, it is one heck of a struggle. You need to use your battleships, your artillery, your carrier based planes, etc. to really weaken as spot before an assault. I did something stupid and lost a marine tank brigade, which was a disaster. This game is not as easy or simple as it may look from the outside, there is a lot more depth here than I…

I love the Strategic Command series. Fun, pitched at just the right level for a strategic war game. The problem with War in the Pacific is not with the game, it is the theatre. When you game the whole of WWII strategically, there are plenty of possible outcomes. There were times when it could have gone either way. Your choices really matter and you can replay numerous times. When the focus narrows to the Pacific theatre, there really isn't much chance of getting more than one outcome…
