I'm enjoying this game with just a few issues. I really like how you have to carefully decide how you will spend your MPPs (money/credits) per turn as it makes you think on what you need (there's no way that you can do everything). Do you push for research to make your units better? If so, what categories do you sink your resources in? Do you try to field more corps (units are relatively expensive)? Or do you try to influence other countries diplomatically? Really interesting choices to…

It’s too bad that the Chinese and Indian fronts got limited coverage in The World at War. Part of that was they had a hard limit of 26 hours, and my guess is that interviewees and film were limited. The game Strategic Command WWII in the Pacific gives a good feel for the scope of those fronts.

Probably the best strategic WWI game out there, though that doesn't say much considering how few there are but it is still pretty good. The combat system for the Strategic Command series works well for this time period, and lends itself to some pretty deep tactical and strategic decision making. On the strategic side, you have quite a few options available to shape the direction of the war. As the Central Powers right off the bat, you decide whether to declare war on Belgium and focus on the…

EDIT - played another 37 hours as the Central powers. The game is BROKEN. I screen shotted the end of game units that remained - unbelievable - the entete had an overwhelming # of units in france/uk and tons more in the US - the economy is broken. MAN I'd love to love this game but frankly you're playing against a broken system. After a while the computer forgets about its navy, diplomacy somehow stops working, taking down units is so painful that the economy system replensishes enemy units…

Overall, it is a good grand strategy game for fans of turn base + hex maps. The WW1 setting is nice and refreshing. Though you'll need to be prepared to save/load a lot on your first game to understand the basics as they are not explained to you. What works: 1. Solid strategy rules - once you understand them, you know in advance what result an action will give 2. The grand strategy aspect of the game is really nice and never stops 3. Naval action is high risk/high reward and feels brutal as it…

I would definitely recommend this game. Several reasons. 1. Most importantly, the MODS/DEVS are open to feedback and have just introduced a major patch over a year after the game released changing a lot of things in the game. 2. There is a small but active MP game scenario ongoing. It's fun. 3. Right now the only WW1 game which is still getting active support and love is SCWW1, all the rest have stopped active support and MP games. 4. There is immense amount of replay possible with each…

One of the best Strategy games I've ever played. Its got the old school turn based game play which i love and its doing some really clever things under the hood too - the AI, realistic feeling combat and morale and a fun economy system that make this game stronger and more rewarding than a lot of other, flashier, titles. Its FUN, (war is hell ofc) a lot of newer games forget this and think more is more. Its not. This is a near perfect game. Things i'd love to see in future updates - 1)…

The Strategic Command game system sucks. It is horrendous. It has 1 unit per hex, including 1 warhip per tile. Which is ridiculous. WW2 in this system sucks. The scale is off, there is no maneuver. American Civil War sucks - it becomes WW1. But this one - the WW1 one - is MAGIC. It works. The system seems tailored made for this type of warfare. Even the ridiculous naval 1 warship per tile....well.... it works here. I am actually.... OK with it. Am as shocked as you are. The technology race…

Finally found a title I feel strongly about, to make me want to give my first Steam review, My hats off to the developers. Back in the late 1960's I purchased Avalon Hill's strategy game "1914", which I really loved. It has held the #1 spot of my all-time favorite strategy games ever since. During a move a long time ago, I lost my copy and have thought many times about putting together another set from copies on Ebay. The original cost me $4.97 and I've estimated it could cost $100+ to…

In my opinion, Stategic Command: World War I is the best round based strategy game in the last few years. First of all, there are not that many games with a WWI theme, but this one is historically very accurate and the game mechanics are perfect for transferring the feeling of Trench Warfare and stalemate on the Western Front, but also to work with the collapse of the Russian forces. Yes, the graphics are not that beautiful, but they do their job and the soundtrack is just amazing if you ask…

I bought this game on sale a few weeks ago, and already have 208 hours in it. This is a great game, and perfectly captures the scale of The Great War. You are not railroaded, but have the power to change some historical events, even if it comes with great effort or cost. I started the game on intermediate, and won the first campaign as the Entente. Not so hard, I thought to myself and switched to the Central Powers to win there before upping the difficulty. I proceeded to get my rear handed to…

An oddly addictive strategy game. You can try numerous strategies out with both sides. Don't want to invade Belgium as the Central Powers? Fine send those troops to Serbia. Just enough resource management not to become tedious but still has a major impact in the game. The technology research vs. reinforcements done right. All in all I really enjoy this game and if your an old grognard looking for a lighter but satisfying time, you will too.

This is arguably one of the most refined and elegant strategic war games available right now on PC. While some aspects are abstract and the lack of stacking may seem odd, it does fundamentally simulate the wide fronts and attritional nature that defined the war. The game forces you to make important decisions about troop placement, combined arms, research and diplomacy - all in a package that remains surprisingly simple yet deep in strategy. In addition the AI offers a refreshing challenge,…

Quite addictive game. I enjoy the small messages between turns which tell you about contemporary events. Fits perfectly to Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcasts and Wikipedia articles about WW1. Looked up Frederick Stopford's performance at the landing of Suvla bay! It seems that atrocious planning abilities combined with outrageous ineptitude were quite common for officers in the first world war. I would recommend this game to anyone interested in history and/or strategy games.

Grew up on the older games in the series. The game is a simple strategy game that is complex enough to present a challenge while still being easy to pick up and learn. I currently have a save that I am six hours into where as Italy I took Libya and Ethiopia. Then a few months later the Russian Empire would invade Persia with the Ottomans declaring war on Russia in return. And I have gotten to watch the AI handle an invasion about as well as Putin has in Ukraine.

It's probably the best of the (very few) strategic WWI games out there. The Strategic Command series has been around for a while, so you know you're getting a system that is well-supported and devs who take a hands-on interest in getting it right. I actually think WWI might be the best fit for SC's particular mechanics. The AI is decent to very good for this genre. From game to game it will use different overall strategies and operations. It is also pretty good at managing ground level…

There are still my thoughts below but I'd recommend it for single player. This is mainly based on my multiplayer experience. I feel the game is built around single player and the AI. 10/10 - best SC game, IMO And the best WWI strategy game out there. Strategic Command's system is a bit hit or miss with me (I've tried them all), but I think the base mechanics of the series, mixing light tactical with economic/strategic, by far works best in this scenario. It's like a perfect marriage in terms of what SC is trying to do and the sort of conflict WWI was. I can't think of many World War 1 games, let alone turn based ones, but this game gets it right. I definitely recommend it. It has replayability and is the "just one more turn game". You'll also learn a lot about World War 1 if you just have a high level understanding of the conflict. I think some of the most interesting part of the game is Russia and the eventual Revolution that takes them out of the war, and the conflict in the Middle East between the British and the Ottoman Empire.

This is a fun game, and it can teach you a lot about World War I. It shows why Serbia was such a tough nut to crack, or why the Germans didn't invade the Netherlands. But there are weak areas. Getting America to intervene in the war is very difficult, and is accomplished only by the investment of a great deal of economic points. In reality, the allies didn't bribe America to fight, but the US did so after German U-Boats and diplomatic bungles irritated them enough. If America does come into the…

For me, SC:WW1 is just too abstract. The scale of the map also feels too small to be a proper nuanced representation of World War 1, particularly around the Western front. With that being said though, I still recognize this is an extremely fun turn-based strategy game, and one that was needed given how strangely under-represented WW1 is in gaming. If you're a fan of either the setting, or strategy games, I'd absolutely recommend it (particularly on sale).

With 66 hours, all single player in the first vanilla 1914-18 campaign, I recommend, with some caveats. SC:WW1 scratches the WW1 hex-game itch and is one of the best (of few) at doing so. That said there's a few things about the SC system I find frustrating. The one-counter per hex limit is annoying and distorting. I understand the need for simplicity, but allowing 2 units in a hex would be a huge improvement. The hex scale is 50km/hex which is further than the range of most artillery in the…

Yes with reservations. The campaign map uses a hex diameter of 30 miles with corps sized units (typically 2 divisions). There is no stacking of units in a hex, consequently it is impossible to replicate the campaign game on the western front as there is no maneuver room. A scenario is provided with a hex diameter of about 5 miles and division units. I haven’t played it yet but it appears to be a fair replication of the war on the western front only—no Serbia, no Russia, no Austria no Turkey,…

A traditional turn-based hex game. The AI needs work doing. For example, playing "Call to Arms", I had reached Autumn 1917 with the Western Front slowly being eroded by German advances. The British and French were up against 4-0/5-0 predictions across the whole front and could make no headway at all. Air recce then discovered that behind the German front line were reserves covering the whole of Germany. Not an empty hex as far as the eye could see. The AI could clearly pile on new units without…
