Part of that was they had a hard limit of 26 hours, and my guess is that interviewees and film were limited. The game Strategic Command WWII in the Pacific gives a good feel for the scope of those fronts.

First the map scale is compressed which makes for a less accurate map and skews movement. The bigger issue is the imbalance of China. It is fairly easy for the Chinese to beat the Japanese and invade Japan itself. This is completely implausible, but fairly easily accomplished in the game making the Axis position even worse. I would stick to the Europe and Pacific…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the series, I have played WWI and American Civil War in addition to this. While this is probably the weakest of Strategic Command games, World at War is still fun and very much recommended. Pros: + Easy to learn, harder to master. Moving units and fighting with them is simple. Hard part is to decide where to fight and when, what to researrch and when, what to build and when. + Clear and pleasing visuals. Some mods are even included to improve on this. + Some historical flavor…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hello everyone. I'm 67, and been a gamer since the 1980's when I was in college. Still have my original Strategic Command Disc that I purchased I think in the '90s. This game so far, has everything I could want in a computer game. Everything works for me as advertised. No glitches. The graphics look cool. I'm starting out as the Americans and then I will play as the Germans. Then, I will play the Civil War game, and then World War One. :) I expect to be playing these games into my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Almost really good, but has two major issues that cause a ton of frustration for me and ruin my campaigns. Supply and reinforcement. The supply and reinforcement system in place is so simple it destroys the game experience in critical moments. I have china's capital surrounded, they have 3 units defending it. I launch several waves of attacks over months by maximum veterancy units at full strength, but every time their numbers get low they just click a magic "reinforce" button and suddenly they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Strategic Command: World at War: I tried this game twice in 2023 (Rostov and the Axis High Tide scenarios). I didn't like it after ten hours of playing, so I abandoned it. Fast forward 3+ years to last week, I was feeling disappointed/annoyed with the complexity of Hearts of Iron IV, so I decided to try this game again. The third time as it turns out, is the charm! I get it. This is a really good, fun game. I have been playing it nonstop over the past couple of days and find myself…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Capitulated the USA through losses in the Pacific and Euopean Theaters+occupation of San Fran. in the regular campagin/scenario Didn't even get Hawaii ceded to Japan despite occupying it, also got hit with the oil embargo as Japan and the Pacific/Atlantic security zones and they started drifting towards the allies again. I'm sorry, but it's not that hard to code that into the scenario. That's something that they even have with their WWI game. Now despite inflicting the most humiliating defeat…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a love-hate relationship. I would give it a neutral rating, but i'll give the game a positive recommendation only because i spent 40 hours playing the Grand campaign and actually caring, planning, cursing, celebrating. The world conflict is well implemented; research, production, supply, diplomacy, world events. But there are several problems with the game that are really annoying and spoil the fun. 1. The damage system is so obfuscated and complex that at some point i gave up…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game some time ago and was put off by the jerky scrolling across the map. I recently revisited the Slitherine collection and realising I had this game fired it up again and persevered with the manual and the opening moves. Im so glad that I did. I tend to use the keyboard to scroll around the map and find this has overcome my initial misgivings. The game has just the right amount of complexity for me alongside reasonable unit graphics. The fighter interceptor and escort system…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I played my first full campaign ever. Probably ... 30-50 hours? I'm unsure how long I spent playing it versus how long I had before I started the campaign. Impressions: I played as the Axis on like the regular difficulty. Early game felt a bit meta driven if you want a basic game (no gimmick strats like paratroops into the UK for example). You don't follow the meta... things can go very poorly. Axis lack resilience to early game mistakes I think. As time goes on things change. You still…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game that gives Axis and Allies vibes if you use the graphics models and Third Reich vibes if you use the counters. Seems simple on the surface but looks are deceiving. This isn't a rock/paper/scissors system, tanks don't always beat infantry and they don't always lose to anti-tank guns. The supply system is complex and drives everything from unit mobility to combat results. If you sit down and wonder "why am I having such a hard time on Green difficulty?", the answer is that you haven't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic World War II grand strategy game! If you enjoy commanding entire nations and making the big strategic decisions without getting overwhelmed by unnecessary micromanagement, Strategic Command: World at War is an outstanding choice. I have logged over **4,000 hours** playing this game, and it remains one of my favorite WWII strategy titles. I also created the **TRP World (Total Realism Project)** mod for the game. It pushes the editor to its limits by using the largest world map…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite multiplayer game. The community is helpful and supportive. Easy to find an opponent. The game appears simple but the strategy and tactics are deep. You'll need to invest some time learning the game before you take on an online opponent. The developers have provided years of excellent support. They talk with the gamers, answer questions, and have provided hundreds of gamer requested updates. For free. Where other developers provide updates with expensive DLC, Fury supports all of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've dumped about sixty hours into this game, and I really enjoy it. I would consider myself a mid-tier wargamer. I find things like UoCII a little too simple, but I'm lost when it comes to War in the East or anything of that caliber. This hits a really nice sweet spot for me. I really enjoy having the whole world map to play with, it opens up a lot of unorthodox strategies. A total victory for Rommel in Afrika might spill across the Middle-East into India; a staunch Japanese assault in Siberia…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an old dude who played Axis and Allies and various Avalon Hill board games as a kid, this has been the game I've consistently returned to when I've needed a WW2 fix. It's my favorite computer strategy wargame - just the right level of abstraction, difficulty, scripting - I don't care to cover it all. It's great; an all-time classic. I've never even tried the mutliplayer but apparently it's a lot of fun, too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A big upgrade with lots of improvements over previous versions (Big map, lots of new units, research slowly grows with ocassional breakthroughs), heaps of interesting historical facts and pop-ups as the war goes on and lots of decisions to make. I only play axis vs the AI and use the editor to make it a challenge but possible to win, its very powerful allowing you to edit what units the AI receives, your starting money you cna even clear starting enemy units. My favourite part is invading my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a neutral option or a scale, but if I'm forced to pick one or the other, it's a no from me. It can be enjoyable and is very impressive in its scale. But the scale is also one of its biggest problems. It is too high to make use of things like big encirclements. The supply situation of the foremost part of the encircling force will generally be poor enough that it's not worth attempting, the massive size of hexes compounds this issue. Battles are won and lost primarily with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Strategic Command is for me, the better Hearts of Iron 4. The combat in HoI4 sucks in my eyes (bad that's not like Crusader Kings) but in SC you can manage and move your troops by yourself on a gigantic map. It's all turn-based and it's good, like CiV or Gladius or just say a typical turn based 4X strategy game. Like in HoI4, events happen and you have to react to them. You can recruit Troops, use diplomacy and spend points in technology. I was searching pretty long for a game like this,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Strategic Command WWII: World At War fills a great niche in the grand strategy war gaming genre. It's both more detailed and complicated than say Axis Versus Allies, but much less impenetrable than Hearts of Iron 4 for example. This is the perfect level of complexity for me. I was able to pick up the game, at a novice level to be sure, with a read through of the quite detailed manual, and a few hours worth of video tutorials (I'd recommend Gaming With The Colonels series), and have been…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play Avalon Hill Third Reich in the 1970s. This is a more sophisticated resurrection of that game. I'm just learning but so far its very promising
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing Grand Strategy Game for WWII that in my opinion falls right in between Hex of Steel and the Hearts of Iron series. **Absolutely huge world map but the map is ugly as hell and old school tech......it needs an update badly.** That said, like most Grand Strategy games out there the modding community is outstanding and is working (as of this comment's time stamp) on a complete re-work of the world map that is very historically accurate with better graphics and it's almost completed. Other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One can feel the that the designers have a love / commitment to this game. This game is a bit deep, but golly if one plays to keep the mind sharp, to learn something, to learn history (see below)... this is a noble "quest." I love games that teach history as one plays. This has the correct historical flow to make this a historical game. The only criticism of this game is the China campaign is not historical, and this is true. But a historical China would involve massive supply…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game - excellent historical realism without getting too bogged down in the minutae. Great entry level wargame if you're looking for a step up from Panzer Corps / UOC2 / OOB, or if you're looking for something simpler but more historically relevant than HOI4! Developer is very active on the forums, and the game has a great multiplayer community.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Easy to learn rules. Hard to master. I sound like a commercial.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am playing this game for the first time, simultaneously 2 PBEMs with different players. One of whom is somewhat experienced and the other is a "fresher" like me. It is fun and interesting. Both my games have just about to enter 1941, so i do not know everything. What i liked- 1. French having a very large and ultimately useless navy. 2. British empire split into several commands like Canada, Anzac etc which cannot be mutually controlled by the constituents. India is a separate country…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game sucks big monkey balls! If you play the axis (more challenging) , no matter what you cannot win - period. I actually conquered the entire island of Britain only to have them move their capital to Melbourne ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Australia! Now, this was insulting enough on its own but not add insult to injury, the UK was able to, shortly thereafter, deploy a new carrier! Seriously? Was the ship yard in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Australia? Whoever wrote this program has the mental agility of a small soap dish. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are looking for something more involved than Axis & Allies but also something more approachable than one of Gary Grigsby's logistics simulators, then this game might be for you. Units are on the Army and Corps level, individual ships or task forces, depending on which of the included mods you use. Air units are air wings with various specialties, tactical and medium bombers, and fighters of course. Maintaining supply is often more of a threat to your units rather than units being…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid game overall. I had a great time playing this one. Brought back a lot of great memories when I played the original Strategic Command in middle-school. Back then, I only had the demo, which only gave you about 20 turns. But I remember playing the hell out of it anyway.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unrealistic AI, even on the lowest difficulty setting. AI is very powerful. Cut off units maintain difficult to destroy, Air units are ineffective in gorund attack, even with bonuses,. Naval units atttacking a ship in port only damage, if you're lucky. The port receives some damage and your attacking ship always does, but the ship in port remains full strength. Naval usits bombarding shore rarel if ever damage units on shore but always receive damage. I do not recomend, don't waste your money…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent re-playability and support
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are winning on the soil of UK island Stalin is having a hard time holding his ♥♥♥♥ and rushes to war like he was heading to the toilet after washing down some pickles and plums with milk. Good AI. Great fun game with some depth.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great strategic WW2 game. You have research and diplomacy options which allow you to upgrade your units and try to entice neutral countries to join your side potentially changing history. Also there are mods and user created scenarios which allow for good replayability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent strategy game Not too simple not to complicate
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While not a perfect simulation at this scale, the game provides a good perspective of the STRATEGIC considerations that resulted in the events of WW2. Oh, it is also fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the naval part of the game with Japan and has some great carrier battles. Not alot of games have that as well as eastern front packed into one! AI is pretty good and can be next to impossible to beat. The script mods selection for custom games is a great feature so you can disable a lot of advantages for the AI by using that mod or it seems like all the "free" units are too much for the Axis to keep up with. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game shows many aspects of WWII that one cannot get from reading: You would like to capture cities/areas, but there just are not enough troops or transportation available; One can see the difficulties of war in China (fighting WWI Style); certain paths are not allowed in the game, which must reflect mountains with no roads, etc, but these are not clearly marked and must be learned; the options of What to Produce, What to Research gives a form of freedom in the game; Nukes are decisive in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are many grand strategic WWII games but this one is one of the best because it forces a fairly historical conflict but still leaves open a lot of choices. Also it is fairly simple to learn and play, think Panzer General on an epic scale. Great game for pbem also with the inbuilt turn server system.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best WW2 turn based game I have played. One need to find the right balance between complexity and time needed to play. This really does it job for me. I am fan of turn based strategies, but this is the first that allows me to play WW2 on global level. I like AI which is challenging for me. Thank You very much for creating this game and for the fun time You created for me playing the SC series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Edit* Switched review over to positive after the developer response and after playing a bit more, still has problems related to some RNG to overall still a good time passer. Good game for the most part however its not without its problems. The naval combat is the worst this game has to offer by far, it unveils all the problems that the game has in relation to LOS and movement while also exposing the AI as the AI always seems to know where your navy is even if it is a lone wolfpack in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome WW2 simulation. You can tailor the game to your needs and skill level. New to the game? They have a novice level. Old hand at turn based strategy games? They have an expert level. Play as either the allies or the axis and customize each games rules to suit your style of gameplay. Hotseat and internet games are available as well if you would rather play another human rather than the computer. Give 5 stars and would recommend all war game and turn game enthusiasts to give this a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good single player game. Multiplayer has not been thought out well. I bought it to play using the Slitherin play be email system but could never get it working correctly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →when i feel like ww2 but dont have time for hoi4 this is my go to
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not optimised for big screens (1440p). In 1939 france have no tank divisions (had almost 2 times bigger tank fleet than germans IRL) nor artillery. You can't even push through lightly manned Siegfried line lol.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit of a steep learning curve, but highly addictive with great replayability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best grand strategy games in existence for WWII. Historically accurate but provides you with the freedom to try your own strategies as if you were the leaders of that time. PVP is where this game really shines. It does take a lot of time to learn how to play the game and even more time to improve your strategies in order to keep up with the seasoned veterans who have been playing this game for years but the challenge has been amazing! Highly Recommend but not for the faint of heart.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A high end strategic level game that is highly immersive and enjoyable. With an easy learning curve and a broad expanse SC WAW will involve you in key decision points and strategic decisions of the "last great war". If you enjoy thinking both strategically and tactically across a broad expanse of various armies then this is the game for you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Many different possible outcomes to a strategic desicion.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. Highly recommend it if you like strategic level WW2 games. Current patch created some bugs that need fixing ( like not being able to bomb Pearl Harbor when you declare war and not being able to ground strike units in costal towns((covered by a red hex)) ). That aside, a great game. (UPDATE: DEVS updated the game and screwed it up. Allies are WAY too powerful early on. DEVS just couldn't leave well enough alone.) (UPDATE: Devs still need to SERIOUSLY work on balance…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was looking for a good introduction to slightly more "grognard" level and this fit the bill nicely. Great "one more turn" playability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its strategic command. If you love strategy games, this is a must. You have to know history and strategy. Get it. I have bought it three times over the years, lol

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite WW2 grid strategy game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I owned both the War in the Pacific and the War in Europe versions, and I was super happy to pick this game up. Lots to offer, a good way to learn about geography, politics, and the history of the time all while having a lot of fun doing it. Highly recommend, send me an invite for some PBEM!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the biggest challenges for any World War II strategy game is capturing the sheer scale and complexity of the conflict while still keeping the experience enjoyable and playable. For me, SCWW2 strikes that balance perfectly. As an older player who grew up with Avalon Hill hex-and-counter board games, this feels like a natural evolution of that classic style. It delivers the same thoughtful, methodical gameplay but adds a remarkable level of depth that genuinely affects how battles unfold.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Strategic Command WWII: World at War presents itself as a grand-scale, turn-based strategy game that encapsulates the entirety of the Second World War in a global campaign that stretches from Europe to the Pacific. From the opening turns in 1939, the game tasks you with making high-level military, economic, and diplomatic decisions that will shape the course of history. You can choose to lead the Axis or the Allies, and from there the game unfolds across a massive hex-based map, giving you…
