positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Our stockpile of old game pass gift cards ran out last month. I was gonna use a bunch of old points to extend that for the kids, but Xbox removed that option too. Spent em instead on the original (best) version of Raiden V, which only ever released on Xbox, only digitally, and never went on sale.
unlabelledView post →Its like the makers of the game had no understanding of what made the series enjoyable. This should be an acade game, not a mediocre story with characters talking about coffee. I enjoy Raiden 3 and 4. I have them on GOG. I prefer them and wish Raiden 2 and DX were available on GOG as well. I have Raiden DX for the Playstation, yes I imported it from Japan. I only have this game on Steam as I purchased the Humble Choice bundle that included it and out of the 12 games, I had 1 on Steam and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While there are some great ideas, this is a very, very poorly packaged game. Playing it just isn't fun, keeps on making you feel bad about your performance, and as a fan of Shoot'em ups I'm really disappointed I have to ask you not to play this one. First off, let's start with the obvious: the game is a mess. While screenshots may seem visually appealing, it is just a nightmare to look at. As this game is a "Side step at the right time to dodge everything" kind of game, you'd expect to be able…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got it from Humble Bundle on a whim. Some kind mastabatory fever dream coupled with a shmup that controls like a Unity tutorial project. Granted, I played it for about 10 minutes. I never review games with such small playtime. But that's all I could actually stomach. Everything about this game offends me on a deep level. From the initial "don't turn off your console," message, to the lack of mouse controls, to incomprehensible story, to the terrible music, to the voice acting that can't be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really didn't think this game could be as bad as the review score indicated - I was wrong. I played some more classic Raiden games in preparation for picking up this one in the recent Humble Choice selection. The old games swiftly handed me my butt, but seemed well enough made. Here, everything is like a mess. The backgrounds often clash with the bullets, the soundtrack is pretty awful, and the talking - oh the talking.... Easy advice if you are trying to enjoy this game, controller RT will…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →one of the worst shmups I've played in a long time. How do you get this far into a long-running shmup series and then decide "Let's make bullets really hard to see against the backgrounds!"? On top of that, the screen's randomly zooming out (for cinematic reasons, I guess) and making stuff even harder to see. I could have forgiven all the stupid talking if the game had actually remained fun to play. Go play Raiden IV instead (oh wait you can't buy it right now, it got delisted until Mikado…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No Xbox controller support despite the store stating it was fully supported. Hard pass for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →boring shump where you have to listen to a podcast about coffee for the whole thing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Raiden has always been one of the most known titles when it comes to the shoot'em up genre, and beloved by many. But with Raiden V, I guess we can say it can be considered one of those titles that the devs wanted to celebrate a series with, yet nearly kill it for good in reality. Raiden V is by no means a bad game; just a disappointingly mediocre shmup that does the previous games dirty and ends up being inferior to them. And with the way it was rightfully treated by the fanbase, it can put the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What did they do to Raiden? These are my initial impressions. They may change at any time, every time. The first thing that hits you is how generic the music sounds. Sure, there's some nice choral pieces and a Vocaloid? in one of the songs, but nothing as memorable as prior games. The second thing that hits you is pretty egregious for a SHMUP, and that's extremely bad bullet visibility. A lot of the bullet colors blend into the background. Secondary to this is the bad color-to-bullet type…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has backseat gaming built in. While you're trying to stay alive and shoot stuff down, there are a bunch of characters incessantly giving you unnecessary instructions and otherwise spewing a battery of stream-of-consciousness rubbish at you. It's comical. There are literally characters just talking the entire time. I don't care! Let me shoot ♥♥♥♥!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NO TATE MODE, in a modern vertical shmup! :( 2/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy if you want to play local coop! The second player is forced to use the keyboard even though a second controller is available. Poor technical implementation.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like Raiden IV but far worse. The music and combat effects are not balanced. I had to turn up the music really high just to hear it. It's full of tiny awful levels followed by boss fights. The backgrounds are poor and pass buy at weird speeds. You're forced to sit through endless dialog that is voiced over. Sometimes you can't see what's ahead of you because it's covered in text. You can't turn off the text. You can turn the voice channel to zero. It has infinite continues and local…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You know you have good shooter when you play for minutes and minutes at a time. I love the narration of the game when you're playing the various stages and it has great humor in between levels with the Captain and his assistant has different opinions of things. The games graphics are silky smooth and controls very well with an XBOX One controller. I hope that we get more kinds of games like this and that UFO continues to support the PC community. On a side note I liked the GT racer game they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →raiden 2 will always have a soft spot in my heart with fond memories of it eating my quarters at the pizza shop as a kid. but raiden v is hot garbage. there isn't anything redeeming about this overpriced game. raiden v features trash level design, obnoxious storytelling, annoying voice overs, and bad gameplay. my biggest gripes: 1. enemies that pop-out from behind you and immediately shoot 2. the overly colorful bullets and backgrounds making the patterns hard to see 3. absolute mess of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply joining the choir here with the same complains as every other negative review. Why? Because they really do bring the game down so much. Who thought it was a great idea to have people talking literally the entire game as you're playing and have the text appear on the screen blocking your top screen view? Yes, you can turn it off but it being on as default means the devs thought this was the standard way they wanted it. Who thought it was a great idea to have bullet color blend in with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love old school shoot-em-ups. Raiden 2 was actually my arcade fave for a long long time, the Big Purple Beam Of Death was just so awe inspiring. This is a pale shadow of what the series once was. It's buggy, low res, full of annoying voiceovers and busy onscreen crap... and worst of all, it just hasn't learned any of the lessons that have informed game design in this genre in the intervening time. in a post-Ikaruga world, this one really isn't worth the money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks nice, but a a chore to play. Found myself drifting away while looking at the beautiful particle explosions. Some people are constantly talking through COM while you fight, their delivery as if they are having a chat at the coffee shop. Forgettable soundtrack too. Worst of all, screen filled with bullets and explosions, but no worries, no real penalty if you die = no stakes = complete boredom.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After the first hour: Here we have a classic top-down shooter, where players have to pilot their ship through millions of enemies and shoot ‘em up, that’s why it’s a shoot ‘em up. This is a classic old school shooter and it’s still a lot of fun to play through it. Too bad there are a few things I can see an issue with. There are multiple paths in the game, but they seem similar. I also beat the game in just over an hour, and while there are multiple paths, I’m not sure how much replayability…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome shoot'em up! What else to say?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →wouldn't recommend came back to this after seeing i had barely play and just a few minute into the game i realize why, keyboard mapping is non existant you either play with the 3 default setting or your out of luck and will have to break your hand to play this.Game also don't support any controller which is frankly baffling for a game coming out in 2017 and more so a director cut edition. Skip and play on mobile or something ain't worth the cash here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really want to enjoy this game, because I do dabble in the shmup genre a bit from time to time. The problem is, this thing is buggy af, and I can't complete the game. Crash on startup? Because apparently the devs can't handle actual GPUs it's gotta run on integrated graphics. - This game was made in 2017 btw. So the devs are just straight up incompetent. Crash on reaching the stage 7 boss? No idea why, haven't been able to find a fix for it in the discussion. Tried killing the bootstrapper…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having a lot of fun with this one. Yes, you still get the same three weapons we all know and love from Raiden, along with two other varients of each weapon and you get which ones to choose before starting the game. There's also three ships to choose from all having different strengths and weaknesses from power, shield, and speed. Choose from five different difficulties, discover the ship and loadout you prefer most and set sail. What I like best about this game is that unlike traditional…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish I could recommend but I can't Pros - It's Raiden Cons - NO TATE! Can't play in portrait. - too much dialog
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a fan of the genre but it was extremely short, people were talking non stop but because of explosions you can't hear anything. Infinite continues also felt bad. Extremely expensive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am writing this well after 3-4 years after I got this game. I found it at a really good price at some point and it was a well known series. But I cannot wholly recommend it... (+) Nice graphics chaotic action shooty goodness fun timewaster (-) only ENG voices and REALLY BAD ones... I have completely muted them on my later runs same-y gameplay over and over (one might argue that this goes for all shooters but still) it is a standard vertical shooter, no frills or whistles maybe it is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Raiden 5 Directors Cut is the latest in a long line of shoot 'em up’s, and has a decent soundtrack and great gameplay that’s marred by really poor UI design and out of place narration. For its abnormally high purchase price I can’t recommend buying it, unless you absolutely must have the latest entry in the series or can get it on sale really, really cheap. Gameplay Gameplay is a mix of all the previous games, with Raiden 5 taking parts of each. You have a choice of three different ships…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Will only run on integrated graphics, lack of options kept subtitles constantly blocking off a 1/5 of the screen where enemies would show up, game repeatedly crashed on level 7 and doesn't seem to be fixable. Minor complaint: store page says it has cards but it actually does not. Everything else is fine, other than the constant annoying talking.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Turn the voices off. Mediocre shmup.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm just happy someone in Japan is still making shmups. If you remotely like shmups, BUY THEM....let the devs know there is still a market for these types of games on STEAM...otherwise this is a dying genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Even if we are germs; we have a will of our own!!!!!"
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot reccomend this game, certainly not at full price. Maybe for 5-10 bucks, if you're a fan of the genre. Pros: *Graphics are pretty *Controls are responsive *Most of the music is great *Realtime charting of your score vs high scores is real nifty. Cons: *Even for a bullet hell game, this gets hard to see what's going on. Medals drifting off everything look an awful lot like many of the bullets you're supposed to be dodging. *Ludicrously awful weeb nonsense story-line. WE MUST SAVE THE…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glad i got this in a humble bundle... Cause it's terrible, just terrible.... This game is bad, totally bad. Not worth the full price, not even 50% of full price. Those who gave the reviews on the store page does NOT know what a good game is: “Overall a pretty good entry for the Raiden series.” 8.5/10 – Gaming Nexus “A great game with a slight update.” 8.4/10 – Video Chums “Great shmup action.” 7.8/10 – COGconnected
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the SHMUP Enthusiasts Only This one was not for me. Personally I'm not the biggest Raiden fan, but even then, the prior games were of higher quality than this game was. You have levels and effects that cause enemy bullets to blend in with the background, generic weapons, forgettable bosses, and GOD AWFUL NPC RADIO CHATTER OH MY GOD SERIOUSLY. This game has a run time noticeably longer than many other SHMUPs of its kind and during that entire time you are listening to this insipid dialog…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paint-by-numbers arcade shoot-em-up. Does very little to stand out from its genre peers, and what gameplay merits it does possess are marred by the poor art direction -- the copious enemy projectile frequently being hard to see and thus dodge -- and the almost non-stop anime banter running in the background of every single stage. 4/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, visually a bit hard to parse though and the voice acting is actual garbage but good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game wants to be "cinematic" in many of the worst ways, and the systems cannot back this up mechanically, collapsing if you try to kick the tires on them and figure out details. Bullets are hard to spot in busy levels (and have fun dodging them when the "camera" zooms or swoops around but your controls continue moving you in the new space!), the game is constantly chattering at you, performed by staffers on a shoestring budget, and to top it all off... there isn't a single interesting stage. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible graphical interface, baffling gameplay, No option for full screen, somehow less creative and more repetitive than previous entries in the series 20+ years older.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful modern day version of Raiden. Difficulty slowly ramps up until the final missions where its absolute chaos with more bullets occupying the screen than space between the bullets. Graphics have that "retro" feel but polished to 11 out of 10. The dialogue is suitably cheesy - I'm glad they did that - and adds a fun new dimension to the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-Super obnoxious Metal Wolf: Chaos type narrative/voiceover, except unironic -Bullets roughly indistinguishable from backgrounds -Zooming in and out on certain maps to alter the map size takes away from your sense of speed -Uninspired music -Explosions and kills don't feel meaty or significant Go play Raiden III instead
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The PC version has performance issues. There's issues with being able to run the game at full speed and run the game without crashing. The game itself is good. It's pretty hype with or without the plot. The weapon system and upgrade system gives you lots of toys to play with too. I unfortunately was only able to play the game properly a couple of times. It became unplayable very quicky due to not running at the correct speed after this first few playthroughs. Uninstalling and reinstalling…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →no form of tate mode, no colorblind mode yeah im thinking this is a sale only pick up
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →#Beat - Normal Story Mode - Less than 2 hours Raiden V is a Shoot'em Up (SHMUP) in the classic sense. It is meant to replay for high scores and trying multiple difficulties and different weapon combinations. If that isnt a way you would want to play this/similar games, I woud not recommend it. At least at full price. $10-$15 seems like a good range for the replayability. Now for an overview: - 8 Stages, each with chapters and a boss - You have 3 weapon slots. There are a handful of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →so.... no.... the game crashes for no reason, plus it have a game breaking bug at stage 7 that fatal crash and does not allowed me to finish the story mode, and the event is too often to forgive. on top of it, the conversations that are transmited as you play gets in the way of the moment so oyu cant hear the music nor you can pay attention to it. it is a shame. thats all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its just some good old challenging bullet hell. Only thing I didnt like about it was the messy dialogue that tried to distract you while you're playing. Its an interesting story but the voice acting and sound quality on the voices kind of fluctuates from meh to terrible.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This shizzle kicks azzles
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game gave me nostalgia for the old Star Fox games and even Galaga. I definitely had the same minor issues addressed in other reviews, but the core gameplay of this is so good that I would absolutely recommend it. The mission lines and voice dialogue are very similar to the style of storytelling in Star Fox, but the vertical scrolling style is preserved here by putting great info panels, charts, and graphs on the sides which adds a lot to the gameplay. Adding co-op to this is fantastic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like it. This is a modern Raiden , good graphics and music and captures the original pretty well . ... BUT It is encased in a window where you have a never ending chatter of the absolutely cheesiest nature, that is (at default) voiced so quietly you cannot hear it behind the sound effects. It also has unlimited continues, which kind of ruin it. I want to like it , but its a 5/10 don't recommend on the difficulty being too easy and the presentation being awful. It is a decent…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me tell you how to at least complete this mess of a game: Go to options: turn off music turn off dialogues At least now you can die 100 times while only listening to actual gameplay sounds. If you leave all of it on "ON" - prepare your brains to melt into tiny little blobs after a few minutes. Probably one of the Top 3 worst Shoot 'Em Up games I've ever played.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →37 minutes of game play and I was good Seriously, THAT much dialog while you're trying to survive a never ending chaos? I feel like for the 5th game in a series they could have spent a little more attention to detail. Honestly, it was fun while it lasted but not worth the time. Sorry for those who disagree, this game is a complete mess lol - Bonus point menus that disappear so fast you can't read them - Information galore that you don't have a second to look at - Terrible background…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a solid, old-school bullet-hell. However, it has some annoying issues and there are a lot of better options out there. If you have a specific Raiden nostalgia going on, grab it. Just be advised that the visuals are not very good and the in-game sound level setting seem a bit of a mess and are way loud compared to other games. The voice chatter going on in the background can be a plus or a minus, depending on how much you like camp and badly written dialogue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love shmups but this game is an eye sore and just feels really bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thanks God I got it for cheap (Humble Bundle) as I find it mediocre and not pleasant to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sound and fury signifying nothing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm reminded of when the Raiden V shmup debuted and everyone complained about the constant voice acting disrupting the experience and calling it game awful because of that. Me: *goes into settings and turns voice effects off* Me: *happily plays gam...* *dies* Me: ... Me: ...still REALLY hard. :P

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not expert in these shooting games, but I like it. I'd say it's OK. 8 out of 10. I played in Normal mode with max shield and bombs set. The game is fast pacing, lots of lots of bullets from enemies, but since the core of the player is tiny (probably in the center?), I could dodge lots of them by luck even literally inside a shower of bullets. The background fast movements sometimes was too distracting, and sometimes blending with the enemies bullets making it difficult to track them.…
