Twelve years ago tonight, during the 7th inning of a meaningless September Twins game, I met my wife. I was stretching in the employee break room. Downward dog, as you can see below. She set down her frankfurter to take a picture of my ass. That’s how it happened.

The Short Version: Considering the team behind it consists only of three people, Downward is worth its praise. It has some of the best parkour mechanics I have ever seen in a game, packed with some unusually captivating levels to run, jump, and slide through. Sadly, other areas didn’t receive this same level of attention. A weak story that feels unfinished, along with dull characters, doesn't provide this game any favours. If it’s the parkour you’re after, you’ll likely enjoy this. However,…

Downward: Enhanced Edition - Nothing enhanced about this game. Don't be fooled by the positive reviews. This game is bland, empty and the mechanics are just awful. The biggest gripe I've got with Unreal Engine is that devs think it's the be all, end all for game development. Sure, it does most of the legwork, but devs think that is good enough and if a game is pretty, then the mechanics don't matter. That might've been a couple of years ago, not anymore. Now, if a game has Unreal Engine, you…

I badly wanted to like this game. The screenshots looked so sweet, and I love first person platforming, there are not enough games in the genre. The dialogue in this game made me cringe so hard I wanted to retract my neck all the way into the torso. The voice acting isn't great, but I think they did an acceptable job working with the insufferable lines they were given. The writing is the issue here. The parkour system is passable, but for a game all about parkour, it's not good enough in my…

A Mirror's Edge-inspired first-person parkour platformer with vaguely Metroid-esque progression sounds like a good time, and I actually found Downward pretty fun for its first few hours despite an abundance of rough edges, but this is ultimately just too janky and unpolished to recommend except on deep discount, with controls that get increasingly unreliable as you acquire new abilities, and level design that gets increasingly convoluted and tedious to navigate with minimal direction (there's…

It's an ok game. Climbing mechanics are heavily scripted, and sometimes the same jump cannot be done with the same height at a differenet place. The fighting is totally pointless, just as the upgrade system. The gathering is suppose to encourage running around looking at alternative routes and secrets, but the game is so boring, it just kills the vibe. The only real fun part is the ending after the cast. The story is also insanely dumb. At least it has tits...but that's pretty much it. There…

Starting positive: Landscapes are gorgeous. The mechanics of parkour and unlocked "powers" are better than I expected, but still jank. Voice acting is great, and the story isn't painfully bad. At no point did anything fail to respond to my input. Giant tortoise. Though I nearly got softlocked once, I never did, and if I had been using the Mark like I was told to then I'd have nothing to worry about. The base-building mechanic feels out-of-place. The epilogue was a bit tedious. Switching…

Its fun for a little bit but gets boring pretty quick, there's a story but it's irrelevant and pretty bad. The game need a way to turn off all the motion blur cause its annoying, the enemy's in this game are terrible and you basically only got one way to get rid of em so combats lackluster as well.

First person post apocalyptic version of Super Mario with parkour. Very resource-heavy but very nice to see and hear despite some small glitches. It is all in all a simple game but it has a fun gameplay and a quite compelling story to me. It's not a perfect game but if you like games like Mirror's Edge you will love it.

I played almost an hour of Downward until reaching the meditation area, where you can practice the various parkour moves, including the ones you haven't unlocked yet. In this area, it quickly became obvious that the game's controls are not consistent and approachable enough to really make parkour work. Wallruns only sometimes work - often you jump off a wall too early because the game decided to, or you don't even stick to a wall. There is a grappling move that only sometimes works well and is…

The game's visuals are good, and the parkour is almost okay. I couldn't make sense of the narrative, how the "planet switching" alters the current level and the ending meant nothing to me. I found many bugs — in particular, the currency increases indefinitely when selling an item (which made gathering currency and unlocking new "powers" completely useless for the entire game). The HUD also disappears every now and then, and some actions can't be performed unless you reboot the game.

Its not a very good parkour game. Movement never gets to be consistent enough to fun. You will be constantly tripping over small rocks and ledges. As the game gets harder it becomes more apparent that the movement just isn't up to the task with it never quite feeling right.

It's a pretty cool FPS parkour game that allows you to make some crazy movements. There is a story, but it's not very deep and that's okay. + Smooth gameplay and graphics + World is fairly well designed. + Shortcuts based on skill. - Very mediocre music (and terrible battle music). - Kind of buggy enemies. I think it took me about 7 hours to finish. A nice experience.

I don't think I can really recommend this to anyone. I was recommended this game cause I wanted a game similar to Metroid Prime. I heard that it has metroid like progression with Prince of Persia-esque parkour all in 1st person. Conceptually I should really like this game, and I really wanted to, but it hurts me to say it didn't really live up to my expectations. I will say graphically it's great for an indie game. It's also not too pricey either, I think I got it on sale for around a dollar,…

It's a really fun experience. The story is quite mediocre, and half of the time you don't know what you're doing or where you're going (the objective marks are broken), but the world is beautiful and immersive, and traversing and exploring it is just fun. A semi-open-world parkour game set in a fantasy universe. It was a very pleasant surprise, I really loved the formula. If you enjoy the gameplay of Mirror's Edge combined with a more intricate and open level design and a somewhat cryptic storytelling, you’ll likely appreciate Downward, though you must keep in mind that it's a small indie title with a few flaws. Your character can slide, dash, wall-run, wall-jump, and grab onto ledges. Right from the start, you have the ability to place a…

Wall jumping and climbing is so wonky that quite often you die/fall down not even knowing why. Fighting enemies is boring and their range is inconsistent. This game is junk. There is no ability to rebind any of your controls. Not joking. Tough luck if you have any mobility related disability. If you want to buy console trash for your PC then maybe you will love it? EDIT: the keybind thing is fixed now if you want to play this game. I personally don't think you should support PC games that remove PC controls, even temporarily.

I thought I'd really enjoy this, but it turns out it is not for me. I really struggled with the controls (keyboard), compared to games with vaguely similar mechanics (such as Mirror's Edge or Doom Eternal). The snappy behavior needed to make parkour mechanics work felt unreliable to me, I could never figure out when and why it'd snap to a wall (or, indeed, not).

Not fun, the only thing challenging about this game is the amount of bloom and lens flare preventing you from actually seeing anything. Frosty mountains and blinding snow to dark corridor with no lightsource with barely anything in between. Parkour is also wildly inconsistent and my character doesn't know how to jump in the direction i'm facing while wall "hopping". Good parkour game with some interesting mechanics. I found it to be quite forgiving in the open world section. The skyboxes used are great to look at and the graphics are decent maxed out. The story is fairly standard, I feel like this would be a great prologue for a story introducing this world, not the meat and bones of the world. The parkour challenge stages are really hard to get a gold medal on and requires perfect execution. This is an indie game so there's always going to be a few…

It is a little hard to recommend this game. The level design itself is pretty good and graphically looks amazing, but that's about it. The story is pretty much nonexistant, there's hardly any dialogue and voice acting is kind of bad. Parkour itself is fine but oftentimes feels unreliable or not 100% accurate, which for a game centered about parkour is quite bad symptom. Fantasy Mirrors Edge with small open world but linear porgression, more familiar to ME Catalyst. Lot of "indie aspiring to be AA" junk in animations and sound. I can excuse that. But physics can bug sometimes, meaning you can loose momentum and gaining it is inconsistent. Momentum that is important to speedrun challenge runs for achievements. Cool mechanic with "magic orbs" that alter the state of the world. Unfortunately underutilized and not well explained. Unsatisfying ending, especially…

Maybe twelve hours of serious play long, with more content beyond the beginning to end storyline. While it's not easy, it doesn't punish you for failure, which is a nice change of pace. The games' tutorial system is poor; it doesn't introduce you to the game mechanics in an orderly fashion, and the 'tutorial' menu just has a list that you can click on, regardless if you've unlocked that thing or not. Easy to learn and difficult to master, straight-forward to beat the story but a lot of challenges outside of that. The story tries to be deep and dramatic, but it lacks a bit of punch.
