This game relies way too much on darkness to make its puzzles way more difficult than they need to be. For example, there is a section with a memory-type puzzle, where you have to step on a grid of tiles in the correct sequence to pass. However, the floor is completely dark, so you can't even tell which tile you're standing on. Even if you've memorized the sequence, you still have to make leaps of faith in the darkness and hope you land on the right tile. If it takes you 2 hours to solve a…

I realize that this game has an audience, and I admit that the premise is normally something that would intrigue me, but I hate Doorways: Prelude with every fiber of my being. After forcing myself through four grueling hours of torture, I'm wiping my hands of it. I can't understand what the developers were thinking by making the game so incredibly dark. And yes, I had my brightness turned ALL the way up on my monitor, but even then most things were just barely discernible. Wandering around in…

If you're a fan of spooky horror games then it's worth playing. I had a decent amount of fun and I will continue to play the others in the series. 7/10 PS: The reason it's rated low is not because of the game itself, but the developers. Apparently at first they said the rest of the chapters would be free and then they charged for them. Kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ of them if it's true but it didn't effect me any because I got it on sale for super cheap.

I already wrote a short review on Prototype which is the free version in the Doorways series. It's more of a making-of kind of game with a lot of jumping and some walking sequences. It was enough to get me in the right mood and make me become more interested in the rest of the series. The first thing I noticed is how dark Prelude is. You should really start playing only when you have already cranked up the brightness value to the max. It can be a deterring factor for many as sometimes it's…

Yet again my enjoyment in a game is completely ruined because a game thinks that darkness means scary and immersive. In the last review that I wrote, The Hat Man: Shadow Ward, I did complain that the game was dark, but little I did know that there was a game WAY worse in terms of darkness. I had to literally play with the in-game brightness at 10 (maximum), my laptop brightness at 100% and still open the Intel Graphics Center and turn it up to 50 so I could play this game. How can you even play…

Personal Rating: Good story, not a bad game, maybe a bit short Classic Rating: ★★★✬☆ So, the first two Doorways' chapters are the beginning of an investigative story about four sociopaths: you are on the trails of the killings, trying to understand what happened and why the murderers did what they did. The story and the way it's told, is very fascinating; it's mixed by surrealism and true events/locations: you're guided through a maze-styled path and have to find your way out by recovering…

Read a lot of reviews and finally decided to jot a few lines. I understand that many are frustrated because this game was listed under survival and I can see why. Yet if you think about it, anything where you would have to try and not get killed can be classified as such (I personally would classify Prelude as more of a stealth game... but then again, not exactly). For those who gave it a thumbs down simply because "it wasn't scary enough" remember - just because it didn't scare you, does not…

Overview Well, where to begin? Doorways: Chapters 1 & 2 (now called Doorways: Prelude, apparently) is an exploration, puzzle solving horror game, that relies on darkness to confound you, while playing as a character who is after people in some alternate dimension. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do much well. It’s yet another horror title in what is seemingly becoming a bigger and bigger genre. Pros Graphics are decent Voice acting is surprisingly good for a low budget indie horror game Imagery…

I actually played most of this some years back - in fact, it was one of the very first games I ever played on Steam! - but alas, my laptop back then was a steaming great pile of doggy-doo, and the lag I experienced ultimately meant that I had to throw in the towel and wait for a better computer. Well, I've now owned that better computer for well over a year, so I guess the time taken to get BACK to this game doesn't quite suggest that I found it all that "compelling" the first time around.…

I don't usually post reviews, but this game needs one. Short Dark Yes this is the common theme of the reviews, and its quite true. Turning up the contrast will make it easier to play, but that whites out the scenes and loses the atmosphere. At the end it definately leaves you wanting more, but after getting so little for my $10, I just can't bring myself to buy the next episode. 2 Chapters in 2 hours, and I was takling it slow, trying to appreciate the surroundings and looking for…

This game. M'aiq thinks you are thinking about buying this game. M'aiq also thinks this one must stop thinking and start buying. Khajiit played this game through multiple times and loved it every time. This game focuses more on atmospheric fear than jumpscares, although they are present. There were many times where M'aiq had to gather up his courage (and maybe a bit of skooma) before going into a room that obviously did not have Khajiit's best interests in mind. Do not play with friends,…

A really neat start to the Doorways series with interesting puzzles and great atmosphere. The graphics are good, especially the lightning, which is beautiful. The puzzles are solvable and enjoyable and don't break the immersion with only the torture devices puzzle being an exception, but the other interesting puzzles easily make up for that. The game is quite easy overall and not too hard to beat, there are few situations in which anything but the puzzles can kill you, but these situations are…

That very moment when you don't pay attention to the quantity of negative reviews and choose something to become part of your collection. And you have no regret. First time I saw this game, it had mostly red lights. Some players expected it to be a 'true horror' holding up 'Outlast' as a model. Others said their 'meh' only because the game hadn't led them by the hand. As for me, I'm indescribably glad that 'Doorways: Prelude' is a classic representative of horror adventures of the early 2010s.…

Doorways: Prelude is the first installment in a trilogy of dark, atmospheric horror puzzle games. You are Thomas Foster, an agent employed by Doorways; a company that tracks down serial killers, investigates their murders, and attempts to eliminate them if possible. This initial release by publisher/developer Saibot Studios contains the first two chapters of the series, and they cover both the Professor and the Sculptor; two equally as demonic serial killers that have left long trails of dead…

Doorways: Prelude makes for a good start to an episodic tale, and I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into Doorways: The Underworld next. I hope to see more emphasis on story, maybe a couple of cinematics, and further exploration of the fascinating world introduced here. As it is, $9.99 for a two hour horror experience (slightly more if you search for collectibles) may seem a bit much for most fans of this genre.

Doorways: Prelude was a solid game. Not fantastic in any way but also not bad in any way. That's not a bad thing to be. The graphics were decent but not great. The voice acting was decent. The game had a decently creepy vibe. The puzzles were not overly difficult, usually just a matter of finding the hidden pieces. The game had a couple moments that were close to traditional "run and hide" horror but they were few and far between. It was mostly puzzle solving. There was one bad puzzle,…

I love the darkness of the story, good soundtrack voice and effects. Beware, the game itself is also very dark in places. But you get used to that and it adds to the gameplay. When you die, you don't have to replay a lot, so a misstep into the void is not really a problem. Looking forward to continue with chapter 3.

Small short game (3 hours average game time) with a really amazing story line. Not much of a horror game to me personally, but more of a psychological dark torture themed game with puzzles. There are a few dangerous puzzles which can take more than one try to pass. Study the game for it's details to reveal secrets! Every location is there for a reason so explore to get 100% completion. I really liked how the notes had narration along with emphasis on certain parts of the dialogue. Not a…

This game had so much potential. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing, and the story and basic premise had me hooked. However, bad gameplay decisions destroyed my enjoyment. What could have been very scary and creepy became frustrating and boring. The game is way too dark, and oftentimes I couldn't see where I was supposed to go. I enjoy the horror genre, so I'm willing to extend a chance to games with mixed or even negative reputations in the search to find a personal gem. On a Steam sale a while back I picked up Doorways : Prelude due to watching a trailer and thinking it looked pretty interesting and had potential. It wasn't and didn't. Game is too dark ( in terms of visibility ), requires backtracking throughout all the levels and if this game was a book it would only have an intro. Game and the story ends while it just started to tell you what this game and story is all about. This practice to sell you the second chapter from my perspective is not acceptable. Also I do not agree with key features segment in its advertisement, there is no replayability or challenges that put your reflexes at test.

The good: - The game has good atmosphere even though the graphics are really old - It's a bit "creepy" at times The bad: - There is no "horror" element as the tag says - The game inventory is too slow - The game relies heavily on darkness for this "horror" element. Even with brightness set to max the game is still way to dark, I can barely see where I'm going. - Puzzles are super simple but become super complicated since it's so dark you can't see I quit when I reached chapter 2. Seriously, even when i max the brightness, I can barely see anything and I played the whole game guessing whether the ground below me is black or it's a hole. No horror, no thriller, just a couple puzzles with jump-scary animations in a dark (literally dark) environment.

I'm going to give this a thumbs up though with caveats because I like what it is trying to do and I think for a small team development. There is some potential even if the first two chapters are not going to come across very strong. The first chapter isn't very good, relying on the fact that you can barely see in the dark for its 'challenge' factor, which is really more exasperating than anything, but it still didn't take long to get through. Mushy controls, inventory management and item usage is clunky and slow. One of the main flaws: it's too dark! The torch stays lit for less than 10 seconds and most of the stuff is completely invisible. Most of the time you stare at a black screen with some details. If a puzzle is difficult just because you can't see where are you going or because you can't see the symbols on the floor it means it's too dark, even at maximum brightness.

Playing without any sound and it's just disturbing images. There are a lot of nice puzzles to solve while playing, so that is a plus. This game has some pretty cool imagery, but the muddy feeling of the controls and the pitch black environments take away any sort of fun to be had. It's also a pain to try to 100% since there's no way to load old saves once you pass a checkpoint thus requiring you to start the entire game over again if you miss so much as a single note.

Standard Unity game with level design where you have to go to place and back to extend game it seems. I don't mind if this sometimes happens, but if it happens too much it seems on purpose. I wonder if people actually completed this game... Too bad for the devs as i can image some time and effort went into making this game, would be great to see that people like the game you've build, but i think it would be better if they somehow included the players from the beginning? Ow yeah, and like…
