60 of 189 · most liked firstThing with this game is that it was rushed to release then abandoned due to poor sales and left with bugs and lack of polish. If I could I would give this a neutral as the game has many charms and is still fun if you can ignore some of the glaring issues with the UI. I don't think I will play this game again and the main reason is certainly the clunky UI. Worst thing for me is that you cannot sort or organise your deck list in any way. Cards are listed in the order you add them. Decks…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Writing as a 800+ hours Slay the Spire veteran and card battling deck building rogue-likes gamer. If Slay and Monster Train are "top tier" exemplars of deck-building rogue-likes, Arcanium is at the very least close to them in many ways. I rate it as at least as good as other excellent similar games, including Across the Obelisk, Tainted Grail and Blood Card 2. Highly commendable features include: 1. Fully featured 'adventure' and 'arena' modes, the former including free movement on a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The thing about card-based roguelites is that they all look the same. They have cards, and unlocks, and bright colors, and lots of status conditions, and they all look like clones. It's impossible to tell the good ones from the mediocre ones just by the marketing materials. Which is why I'm telling you: this one is good. Not the presentation. The characters are memorable and sweet — you play as a bunch of animals in the roles of fantasy tropes: a pyromancer fox, a paladin lion, a necromancer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like Arcanium. It's fun, there is a great deal of variety, and it has good art. Then why is my review negative? If possible, it would be neutral. The way the game is designed, the player basically has two options for vanquishing foes: raw damage or status effects. Status effects are very satisfying... (and I favor them) until the player encounters an enemy with the Thick Skull passive, or something similar. Thick Skull makes the enemy immune to minor debuffs. That means your status…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We must find and defeat Akhan. Let’s hunt down those vile shards! Introduction This review is based on playing on the Steam Deck. Arcanium: Rise of Akhan is a roguelike deck builder predominantly designed around character synergies and how well you can build your deck of cards within a limited timeframe. With a deceptively challenging gameplay loop, you will likely pour countless hours into this game before you properly understand how to play it. But is Arcanium the Ace we were hoping for, or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not gonna write a deep review, I'm just gonna tell you, my holy trinity at this moment is ; 1-Slay the spire 2-Arcanium 3-Vault of the void
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play Slay the Spire first. Then play Slice and Dice. Then The Last Spell. Then Hades. Then and only then when you've exhausted all other good roguelite and card games, go ahead and give this one a try. I wanted to like this game. But the card gameplay and deckbuilding is just so incredibly shallow. This game gets so close to greatness, it only increases the disappointment when you realize how simple it is. Still gets a thumbs up though. I got it on the cheap and enjoyed it for a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game tries to do too much and loses its identity in the process. After 5+ hours playing, I can't tell you what makes Arcanium stand out from the host of similar games in the genre. the "open world map" is really just a small hexagrid with 3 very small regions that are the same every time. Sure, the tiles are rearranged, but it's largely the same tiles. And then, the games gives you "overworld quests" that feel trivial and don't add to the game much. The map itself eventually becomes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, it's a fun a game, however, it still feels incomplete or lacking. There are bugs, and they are reported. The devs haven't made an effort to fix them since their last patch which was a week after it's release. If you can get it cheap like 10 dollars or less, I'd say it could be worth. I have a ton of hours in it. So I did have fun, but I was working on making guides and helping others get better in the community. I was expecting them to expand the game because it's rather short or to at…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's *alright*, but as deck-builders go the cards are kind of uninteresting. I played it only once, and won; I would think maybe it gets more interesting later, but other reviews seem to have the same opinion, so playing it more than once doesn't sound fun at all. It seems like the variety of cards is essentially "damage, damage over time, area damage" and "defense, area defense". Things that can make decks more interesting that there were none of in my playthrough; cards that improve other…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would give Arcanium a "half" thumbs up. It's an interesting deck-based RPG. Definitely unique, while making use of the mechanics of deck-building well. 3 characters duking it out in the wilds, using cards. Cool. Where I find the game suffers the most is the sheer number of "things" going on in the field of play. It's overwhelming. Later in a run, each of my 3 characters had 4 artifacts, each one granting some sort of positive modifier. Then there are 5 blessings, each a modifier. Then the 3…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I just completed all difficulty modes of this game under 30 hours. Also unlocked all chars accept for 1 (which is grindy and I'm not gonne bother since I completed all of the game already anyway). I'm a hardcore fan of the genre, and played 30+ games similar to this. My opinion? This is a very decent attempt at the genre! I whish the game was more, or that there was more to it, though. Overall very well made and would recommend to anybody who likes the genre. 8/10. Could go even close to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty much everything about this game seems incredibly solid and well done. Gameplay is fun, graphics and artstyle are pretty decent, plenty of stuff to unlock, lots of choice available, RNG isn't too debilitating and can be worked around. So why the thumbs down? Well, everything is pretty good except for the part that matters most for a game in this genre.... the pacing and flow are just off. It was only on my first run since the 1.0 launch that I started to just get burnt out on having…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I 100% completed this game and its achievements so I wanted to leave a review. Even years after its release it still stands as one of the best of the genres of recent years. A lot of roguelikes and roguelites feel very stale. But somehow this doesn't. With a bunch of unlockable stuff it makes you want to keep playing more. I love how you can't force builds and that you sort of have to pivot away from your original plans sometimes. You might get cards for one character and decide you want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game that relies on dragging items to spots, there's a pretty annoying bug where an item/card gets stuck in place as you drag it causing you to lose the card as it's now unplayable. I don't want to restart my match every. single. time. this occurs. Only several hours played and this has occurred ## times already. Can't recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tricky to learn, Fun to master Im usually only write review until i reached 100% achievement, but this review need to come out ASAP since it was written during steam sale. I will be honest to say that this game already stopped receiving updates because of poor sales, hence why I tried writing review and hope it can get more traction. This game is pretty team based roguelite deckbuilder that played around with combination of 3 characters each with their own pro / con. Each character have 2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The card mechanics are completely lacking creativity and originality. Here are 3 "different" mechanics in the game: Hex - Deal damage equal to hex stacks and reduce by 1 each turn Poison - Deal damage equal to poison stacks and reduce by 1 each turn Burn - Deal damage equal to burn stacks and reduce by 1 each turn There are like 16 different characters but there may as well only be 3 based on the play styles of them. Tank, Healer, DPS. The game is also filled with bugs that will never be…

unlabelledView post →Superb little Card Battler with good build and hero variety , easy to learn mechanics and a really nice difficulty curve which nicely eases you in to some of nastier end game surprises. The game art and astetic is also really nice - i especially like the heroes when they emote - they cute. Though i have to say the Devs at Supercombo did play it safe with this one , what i mean is that they did make an excellent 'Card Battler' but inside the genre i find it one of the simpler ones , if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had this game recommended to me by a friend after we discussed Hearthstone. That I only enjoyed solo adventures and engaged with PvP only to gain enough in-game currency to obtain the adventures without paying money. And I’m really glad I bought Arcanium as it provides exactly what I wanted to play with extra features on top. Plenty of heroes with different playstyles and synergies, adventure and arena mode and all that in very charming artstyle.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game a lot, but there are many issues. Most of them come down to balance and content. A lot of characters are overpowered (seriously - this game just doesn't handle healers and debuffers well) while some feel like worse versions of others thus it can be easy to just play one composition. As for content, there is both a lot and too little. Each character brings usually 2-3 builds, but problem is that quite often one is just much stronger than other. You always pick party with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a lot of polish here but it's all lip stick on a pig. The main draw of the game, the actual deck building and cards, is shallow at best and just worthless at worst. All the heroes decks play mostly the same for their role ie the dps units have the same reskinned DoTs and DPS cards, the tanks have the same basic blocks and heals etc. The fights themselves were fun sometimes but overall the combat felt like I was never making any real decisions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've seen a couple of negative reviews about this game and the more I think about it, the more I feel that I need to explain why I disagree. In short, I think this game is really good most of the time. Interestingly enough, excelling in areas that it's often criticized for. First of all UI: Most of the UI is excellent. The game is very complex, but the UI makes it easy to understand what is going on most of the time. Both feedback to the player as well as transparency (which are the things…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid deckbuilder with some fun synergy builds 8/10. Yes, it was dropped soon after release and there are some rough edges and things that should have been refined, but it's still better than most deckbuilders on steam and you can have a lot of fun with synergies between the characters. Obviously, play StS first if haven't, but this definitely has its place in the halls of really good DBs. I will say that some of the negative reviews I don't understand. There seems to be a common theme that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is just good, and I've played it from Alpha to Release. The lane swapping mechanic has you shuffling your heroes around desperately trying to mitigate and minimize damage with your card synergies. You're building 3 decks of roughly 9-12 cards, and while this sounds stressful at first, you'll quickly understand what you want out of a character and how they will play nicely (or not) with your teammates. The difficulty scaling in this game is *mostly* appropriate. At the highest…

unlabelledView post →Unfortunately, I can't recommend the game as is. Positive : - Music - World design - Character design - Overall art style Negative : The gameplay - As usual with Deckbuilders, the main issue is balance: Most fights are easy, but when you fight a boss suddenly he can wipe out your party in a few rounds. - The rest of the time, fights are mostly won through papercut victory. It leads to a poor and unfun pacing. - Lots of cards bring very minor advantages. - It's very unclear in the world map…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a hidden gem! I absolutely love Slay the Spire and any deck builder, for that matter. If you have any interest in deck-building games, you need to check this one out—it's right up there, second only to the greatest of all time. This game offers some unique features, there are three "zones" to explore, over 16 heroes - offering some excellent tri-hero synergies, and a unique timer system that lets you explore hexes; before the cataclysm appears which offers a mini-boss based on the region,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm sure it's a great game for the right type of person, but it's too slow and methodical for my taste. Because the board is symmetrical, it feels more traditional and plays a lot more like Hearthstone than Slay the Spire. All that is fine, but it's an important distinction to know before going in. The main thing holding me back is how dense and specific the cards are, so there's a lot of reading and calculations on every turn, which really slows down the flow of the game. That paired with the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe a little late, but here are some of the games I've found in my quest for good singleplayer card games. Note that I play on ios or steam mostly, so when I say mobile I know it's on ios but can't confirm android for sure. Also most of these games are a single purchase, no microtransactions aside from expansions maybe. Arcanium (steam, mobile via netflix sub) - In this game you travel around a hex-based map fighting battles and collecting stuff. You have a party of three different…
unlabelledView post →Somehow it's the minor things that keep me from loving this game: - Vanishing potions (which are one-time-use-PER-BATTLE, which is nice) from the inventory - an off-by-one error in the card list which presents an empty page if the previous page is full - the character selection which _pretends_ to show two pages worth of characters when there is actualy only 1 page + 6 characters (still 18, but why pretend there are more?). - unlocking "thousands" of additional cards in one run which feels…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fantastic card battler! I have several hundred hours in other rougelike deckbuilders like Slay the Spire and Monster Train, and Arcanium is almost certainly going to be another game I sink a couple hundred into. There's a lot of hero combinations and many options for building a run with three separate decks to manage, and multiple difficulty levels. Great combat, presentation, art design and difficulty pacing. Have only had two minor bugs I noticed in my 30+ hours. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is fun but I feel that the adventure is a bit shallow. The depth of this game comes from the large roster of heroes you can level up and mix and match. The map and the adventure is always the same, its your combination of heroes that mixes things up. I'd wait for a sale before you buy this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I try out a new deckbuilding roguelike, I'm always hoping for a long-term challenge. The great games in this genre will always keep surprising you and forcing you to try out new builds because circumstances demand it. And well, Arcanium isn't of them. But it's still a fine game, and I had a decent time with it, although the grind for achievements was a little much. My main disappointment with this game is the amount of false depth in it. There are 16 different characters you can play,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just saw this, so I'm late to the game, but here it goes: I write upper middle grade fantasy (which is possibly the worst genre to be in as an indie, but it's where my heart is). My current WIPs are books 5 & 6 of my Arcanium series. It's a classic portal fantasy w/ modern twists. #FantasyIndiesJune
unlabelledView post →A really underrated card battler. It's the only other card game besides STS and Monster Train that I find myself enjoying. Hopefully more content can be added as well as maybe stuff like Daily Runs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is like if Hearthstone and Slay the Spire had a baby, in all the good ways.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr Extremely worth it when on sale. Still worth it full price. Could have used a bit more polish but still a great game. Pros: -Battles feel great. Some roguelike deckbuilders feel more like engine builders where turns are on autopilot. In Arcanium, I found myself thinking about how to pilot the three characters all the time. -The cast. Speaking of characters, the cast in this game is spectacular. There's an enormous roster, and almost all of them are fun to play. Not only that, but they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great card battler! Tons of variety in characters, bosses, cards, etc. Most characters have a few builds, but some a little limited. Pretty good depth to combos and interactions. Some are a little obtuse, but the learning curve isn't bad. The non-combat exploration mechanics work pretty well, letting you explore and pick your encounters/bonuses before the boss arrives. Combat feels pretty good, with the lane movement being a notable friction point. I don't think the "movement" there is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: - Nice art style - Fun card/turn based combat - Good roster of characters, and all feel uniquely different - Plenty of in game info (such as status effect details, effect duration, ect.) - High replay value, with runs lasting from 30-90 minutes. Feeling a decent sense of progression towards unlocks with each run. Cons: - The game isnt all that difficult to beat. Took me about 4 runs to beat it on normal. Luckily there is a hard mode, but I have yet to try it. - Card unlocks…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good card battler. Wide variety of heroes and good mechanics. Very grindy if you want to 100% achievements as lots of heroes and two modes you need to grind through to get all of them but besides that, would recommend this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting deckbuilder. Most fun part is all the synergies you can build between the large cast and 3 party members. But doesnt have the lasting power of the top tiers like Slay the Spire or Monster Train.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It falls under the "This probably could have been a good game" category. Unfortunately it didn't get there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid over 50h of gameplay. The game is simple, perhaps too simple for some. I enjoy different build variations and party compositions. The increasing difficulty is also nice to go through. I'd say you should get your moneys worth from this game if you enjoy deckbuilding with a little twist
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ art and fx + variety of characters + 3 lanes - unbalanced characters - status effects changing every turn - gui It feels like it needs polishing in many ways but overall it's a nice deckbuilding roguelike game with great gfx.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good with flaws, unbalanced between heroes. few are op, and mostly are weak. only one good healer (angorn), without angorn, every run become very difficult. 7/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Poison good, Stack poison, Win game. (Owl waifu best) *Edit on 20.07.2023* After beating Apex Mode (The final difficulty lvl), I wanted to leave a review that's a bit more fleshed out. That being said, (and memeing aside,) Arcanium is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome game and a stellar deck-builder, with so much variety in class loadouts & combinations that seasoned card game veterans will feel right at home testing out which synergies fit their playstyle the most, while taking on the ever increasing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay: 9/10 Graphics & Sound: 8/10 Narration: 3/10 ✔️ Very solid roguelike deckbuilder, with a lot of mechanics that combine very well together in a satisfying experience. ✔️ A lot of replayability thanks to the vast character roster and a lot of unlockable elements. ✔️ Reasonable onboarding, introducing you to mechanics progressively over the tutorial and the first games with the basic characters. ✔️ Pretty nice character designs (if you can tolerate furries :D). ✔️ The game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could have been fun, but playing a run for 1h (vs minions which cause 0 harm) and die in 1 min vs an elite or the boss, is not.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kind of shocked i played for 9hrs to be honest. Deck variety is very weak which should be the strongest point of this game. Managing 3 decks is just worse than managing one. Maybe as a multiplayer game this would be more interesting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s a best-of-game of Slay the spire, hearthstone and Roguebook. Truly addicting!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verified isn't a whole truth. Really should be "playable". Using the right thumb stick as a mouse movement and the triggers for the mouse buttons barely qualifies as playable. Now this is shelved until my PC is setup again more than a month from now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Arcanium is fine. There are tons of heroes, bosses, artifacts, abilities and synergies. It's easy to learn and has some nice ideas (like the hex based map). However after finishing one run of normal game and one run of arena I learned that there is no more endgame content. Sure there are harder difficulties and each run would be different, but having no goal to work towards like act 4 in Slay the Spire / Astrea or finishing the story like in Chrono Ark makes the game rather shallow and doesn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This would be an okay mobile game, but for a desktop deckbuilder I feel it's just lacking the style to be engaging. The little portraits for each hero / enemy doesn't have the impact of full characters and the combat feels like you're just setting up an engine and letting it run rather than specific choices on each round of combat.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I was hesitant to recommend it, but this game is fantastic. Love the art direction and naming of the cards, the progression and the repeatability - 16 unique characters with their own decks and unique mechanics. I hope this dev makes more such beautiful and creative (card, tactical) games. After 7 hours: the music is great, the character decks are really fun and actually the game is quite a challenge so far as far as the bosses are concerned, especially Arkhan - final boss. After…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not terrible, but not great. Feels like there's an idea for a good game here, but not a full realization of the games potential. And the UI is remarkably bad for no reason. Go play Slay the Spire, Across the Obelisk, Monster Train, or Vault of the Void instead. They're all better games that do more interesting things.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a great first impression. Compared to Slay the Spire card variety seems lacking, I'm constantly being proposed the same fairly basic cards. After adding about 20 cards and a few artifacts, I don't feel like much synergy has built up, either. Card upgrades are also pretty lame, it's almost always increased damage. StS is way more bold in making some upgrades really powerful by reducing the card cost or boosting the *other* effect that's typically more interesting that a few more points of…
