Dota 2 is a 2013 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game by Valve. The game is a sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a community-created mod for Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a character known… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

You queue for one game before bed and somehow you’re counting Roshan minutes at two in the morning, telling yourself that one good smoke can still turn it. My favorite memory isn’t a rampage or a rapier flip. It’s the quiet after we botched a mid fight, when our offlaner typed “my bad,” pinged a smoke, and cut through the triangle without another word. We wrapped around, took vision, found a…

All in all, Ruin your life simulator. 10/10 would recommend if you are trying to kill yourself. Cancer can be cured, Dota community can't be. 35 years old and I always end up playing this game. I have everything good in life. A loving wife. An amazing daughter. A great Job. But somehow I am always looped back into this madness time and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive played this game for 10+ years, its current state is by far the worst its ever been to the point its nearly unplayable. Not due to gameplay, not due to features, hero's, balancing.. No its unplayable because you guys have implemented such a rediculous behavior score mechanic that absolute has not only muted me, but the majority of my team in most matches effectively limiting communication in a team based game. Critical discussion about item timings, when to fight, how lanes are going, all…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dota 2 is ridiculously unfriendly to new players. No guidance, frustrating mechanics, and constant punishment for not knowing everything. If you're new, prepare to be confused, frustrated, and criticized by your teammates for mistakes you can't figure out. It's not worth it unless you hate yourself.

Cheater with 5000 hours is playing every day and reports are not doing anything. Steam profile reports are also not doing much. This cheating problem needs to get fixed ASAP. VAC ban them ALL. OR better yet create a Russian steam version ( just like chinese ) and make them play with each other. For now in 2026 this game is unplayable…

unlabelledView post →After 4,800 hours in Dota 2, I can confidently say this is the best game I absolutely do not recommend to anyone. The strategy? Amazing. The gameplay? Endless depth. The community? A live psychological experiment. I’ve met geniuses, comedians, future war criminals, and at least 12 people who apparently have intimate relationships with my mother. 10/10 game. 0/10 for mental stability. Queueing again.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came back to Dota 2 after not playing since 2018, and I honestly can't believe how far the game has fallen. The current report and punishment system is absurd. Players can report you simply because they don't like the way you played, the hero you picked, a decision you made, or because they need someone to blame for losing. In a competitive game, disagreements and mistakes are inevitable, yet the system gives other players far too much influence over whether you are allowed to continue…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is okay. Very nice community, no cancer. ❤️ 10/10 mental health simulator. Installed for one match, accidentally spent 4,000+ hours developing trust issues. Every game is a new adventure where four strangers confidently explain why the loss is your fault before the creeps even spawn. Would queue again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The current game's integrity system encourages people to unfairly report each other, not for genuinely disrespectful behavior, but simply for using vulgar language, even in a positive way. Sometimes you can get reports for a simple request, if teammates are having a bad day. I don't know why they started rewarding integrity for successful reports—it's like those memes about the Soviet Union, where everyone reported on each other "just in case, for no reason, just because." This is an…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m writing this review instead of clicking the 'Find Match' button, which probably tells you all you need to know about the current state of my mental health. I have nearly 2,000 hours in this game, and I've somehow spent 66 of those hours in the last two weeks alone. I don’t play Dota 2 because it’s fun; I play it because it's a crippling addiction disguised as a highly complex and deeply rewarding video game. The complexity is the main selling point and the main reason you'll hate your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The behavior score system is completely broken. After 15 games without receiving a single report, I only gained +280 behavior score. But after getting 9 reports in just 2 games — including 5 reports from a full enemy stack — I received a low priority penalty and lost -1200 score. At this point, it feels less like a game and more like a report-abuse simulator. Players are forced to grind endlessly for tiny behavior score gains, while coordinated reports instantly destroy your progress.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I installed Dota 2 thinking it was a game. It’s not. It’s a federally approved psychological warfare simulator disguised as entertainment. My first match lasted 72 emotional years. Somewhere between getting flamed for buying boots and being called a “walking ward,” I felt my hair detach from my soul and leave my scalp. By the 30-minute mark, I had gray strands, hand tremors, and a newfound respect for war veterans. My carry told me to uninstall, my support told me to die, and the enemy Sniper…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →22,000 hours played. I installed Dota 2 thinking it was a game. Turns out it’s more of a long-term psychological experiment. Had a bad day at work? Perfect. Queue up a match and release every emotion you’ve been holding in directly into the chat. Nothing builds character like five strangers blaming each other while the enemy team calmly ends the game. Over 22,000 hours I’ve experienced joy, anger, betrayal, hope, despair, and the sudden realization that I could’ve learned a musical…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After surviving in lane since the earliest days of Dota All-Stars, I can personally attest to the extreme struggle and hardship of learning the intricacies of this game down to the most grueling and insignificant details. If, despite the admonitions of other reviews or the warnings of your family and friends, you have still elected to proceed with this commitment to defend the Ancient, I implore you to weigh this short, solemn adjuration in advance. I believe the real truth is that concealed…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Here's my review Valve/Steam. This game is amazing, it's well put together, I've been playing this game since beta. UNFORTUNATELY you guys don't have REGION LOCKS. So there has been a REALLY FUN TREND of RUSSIANS joining USA servers. I have lost a LOT of "Social MMR" because of said russians. You are not even policing your reports. You only receive reports and then punish IMMEDIATELY (not letting you queue for games, not letting you talk, not letting you typing, etc). In the real world we…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game punishes new players. The lower your behavior score drops, the worse the people you are matched with. Anytime other players report you, even if its just for being inexperienced, you lose behavior points. The lower behavior points the other players have, the more they like to report. Its a never ending cycle where new players are stuck. I am new to games like this, and while I have begun to enjoy Dota for the gameplay, I am not the best at it. Even with over 100 hours I am still not the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't had a communication score allowing me to chat, ping or voice chat in about 2 years on this game. We used to be able to talk, meet random funny people, friendly people or not so nice people in the game and play together. Not anymore. On the rare occasions my communication score jumps up to a level where I can talk or ping. A simple 'wp' in chat (and I'm talking a legit one, not a flamer one), a 'hi' or a ping on an enemy ratting a tower is enough to get you a communications ban.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s a certain sentiment that games like League or Dota are an addiction, something that players can’t unlatch themselves from; the uninstall button evading every impulse, as the blood and sanity is sapped year after year. Endless reviews of people thousands of hours into the void, telling, warning people of its pull. I can’t agree with them. This game is even richer and more rewarding than when I started 11 years ago. While life drains every joy around me, Dota is the constant that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dota 2 currently has a significant prevalence of smurf accounts. Newly created accounts have become the preferred choice for smurfs, particularly those using nicknames with Chinese characters. Furthermore, several in-game features have not been updated, such as the Dota Plus quests and certain hero talents that are considered ineffective. A prime example is Crystal Maiden's talent that provides +225 attack speed. Additionally, the process for reporting smurf accounts is notably slow, which…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dota 2 is a beautiful game where five strangers from different time zones come together to make terrible decisions. You will learn patience. You will learn new insults in at least three languages. You will blame lag, teammates, balance patches, and sometimes the sun. Every match feels like chaos, every win feels like genius, and every loss was definitely not your fault. 10/10 game. 0/10 for my mental health. Would queue again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great free game. Only play it if you want to sacrifice your social life.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought *Dota 2* was just another popular MOBA that everyone played because it was competitive. I was wrong. At first, it looks complicated. There are dozens of heroes, hundreds of abilities, items everywhere, and enough terminology to make you wonder if you accidentally enrolled in a university course. But somewhere along the way, you start understanding it. And then you're in trouble. The gameplay is incredibly deep. Every match can turn into a completely different experience…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rating: 10/10, would willingly ruin my mental health again. Dota 2 is a free-to-play game developed by people who apparently asked themselves, "What if chess was played by five screaming strangers who all think they're military geniuses?" The game starts simply enough. You pick a hero. Then within five minutes, you're being blamed for events that happened before you were born. Missed one last hit? Trash. Died once? Reported. Won your lane? Doesn't matter. Your carry is currently farming…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dota 2 — A Veteran’s Perspective on What Makes It Special I started playing Dota AllStars in 2006, when I was 17. Later, I got invited to Dota 2, and it quickly became my go-to game for most of my free time. At my peak, I reached around 7K MMR in later part of 2016—back when Miracle- was famously the first player to reach 9K MMR in the entire world. I have also spent a ridiculous amount of time playing custom games. After all these years, I think I have played enough Dota to explain you,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice game. Relaxing. Not addictive at all. Best community ever.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The communication score system doesn't seem to reflect actual toxicity at all. For years, I've had between 10k and 12k behaviour score chilling in my games playing all roles. My approach was always simple: mute toxic players and focus on playing and try win. Yet recently I'm losing anywhere from 300 to 600 communication score every 15 games with no clear explanation. When I check my match data in game stats on steam, I see only 4–6 reports across that period. At this point, it feels like some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well… what can I even say about Dota 2? I’ve played this game for over 9000 hours, and I’ll probably play for 9000 more. I’ve met some of the best people here, and also some of the absolute worst. Figuring out which is which adds its own little surprise mechanic outside the actual game xD Sometimes this game gets so addictive that I play for 30–40 hours straight, then suddenly realize I’m completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up my life, uninstall it, and reinstall it again a week later because no other game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you think about playing Dota2, don't. It is tedious just to learn the basics and then there's a smurfing problem across all boards. Not to talk about flaming Russians that server-hop everywhere and shout, chat, complain and then report everyone. If they aren't blatantly using scripts for their own advantage. I have seen so many scriptdodges, blind blinks, perfect use of equipment down to the millisecond and spotted over a dozen accounts that already have multiple gamebans on their Steam…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve been playing since Warcraft III back in 2006, and I moved to Dota 2 in 2014. I stopped in 2024 and only came back last month but coming back made me realize something I’ve never really said out loud. When everything in my life starts falling apart, Dota is the one thing that’s always there. It sounds dramatic for a game, but it’s the truth. There were moments where I didn’t know what to do, where things felt heavy, confusing, or just empty and somehow, queuing up for a match gave me…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, Valve, can you guys actually do anything right in your offices? You’ve ruined every major aspect of this game. The integrity system is broken, matchmaking is broken (at Immortal ranks), and the illusion of changes in updates is getting old. You’re ruining the best game in the world.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Valve has 0 idea what they're doing with a multiplayer game. The matchmaking is just useless as far as region and language are concerned. If you queue for US West/East English you get stuck playing with people from Peru, Russia, or the Phillipines who either don't know how or refuse to speak English in-game. The reporting/enforcement system is totally player driven so in any given match, if anyone doesn't like you, they will all issue you communication reports so you will be muted by Valve for…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I learned to love Dota 2 by playing support at 2 AM, buying wards I swore I couldn’t afford, and watching a hopeless lane become winnable because the map finally made sense. This game is a long conversation with your past self. Yesterday you overextended for one more range creep. Today you drag the wave, plant a sentry on instinct, and live to tell the story. The magic is how cause and effect stay visible. Win a fight near an objective and the whole river tilts in your favor. Lose a fight with…

Each and every match in this game will cost a part of your sanity, and keep eating away at it slowly until you're left with nothing but regret. Want to sacrifice your virginity? This game is probably your perfect go-to!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, Dota 2 just doesn’t feel the same anymore. It used to feel alive like something was always happening, something to look forward to. Now it feels like the game is just sitting still. Updates are rare, and when they do come out, it’s usually small changes that don’t really change anything. No big events, no real fresh content just minor tweaks. The Battle Pass being gone is a huge loss. That was one of the main things that kept people playing. Yeah, there are still some seasonal rewards…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Valve never review the parties well and it is never a fair game due to they collect 5 good users againts 2 good users with 3 feed users. The fk system is so wrong, and perhaps they don't have the ability to fix it.

I also have a Dota 2/esports podcast with @sunsfan.gg called "We Say Things". Aside from that, I stream a lot, mostly high rank Dota 2, over on www.twitch.tv/syndereN I love food and have a dog called Løg.
unlabelledView post →I’ve spent a lot of time playing Dota 2, and I genuinely love what the game can be at its best. When I play with high-MMR friends, the experience is incredible. Coordinated gameplay, smart decision-making, and a shared understanding of strategy. That’s the kind of Dota that keeps me coming back. The problem is the ranked system. At my current rank, the quality of games feels wildly inconsistent. I regularly get matched with players who lack basic game sense, coordination, or even the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game seems cool. The item system is pretty in-depth and the heroes have very interesting kits. I'd love to get into this game. However... This game's new player experience is probably only marginally better than waterboarding. The game forces you to play a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bot matches before letting you play against real players. This is okay for most players and not something I have an issue with. The real issue is what comes after: You have to play 100 hours of the unranked mode before…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You win some, you lose some. Dota is a lot like life: If you lose early, you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ from then on. On the flipside, win early and you can parade around bullying the poor. The game has a reputation for a toxic community, this is true. Valve has tried desperately to curb this, via a series of gamified systems, that let you tell on other players to daddy valve. However this is where the real meat of the game is. A give and take of bullying and being bullied, over comms, by people…

At first, I didn’t expect much, but after a few matches, I was completely hooked.
