negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game with beautiful artwork. At it's core, is a good set of mechanics that make the gameplay fun and unique. That said, the campaign seems to be only 5 levels, that you're forced to play through multiple times, and there are only 6 figurines to choose from to fill out your party. I've exhausted all of the new content out of this game in 4 hours. For $20, I expect more.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the times where I wished Steam had a "meh"-option. It´s not a bad game - some will adore it despite ist flaws… "It has a lot of potential"! positive: + beautiful diorama-style + nice "camp" + atmospheric music negative: - no manual (link on Steam is deceptive). SOME of the concepts are only learned by chance, trial&error (see next paragraph). Some not at all: When do you see traps? Which character can carry which armor and weapons? What are the damage-statistics? How many XP to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Summary: I quit tabletop gaming due to time and money long ago, so I couldn't help but be curious when I saw Wartile. There is something enchanting about the feeling of figurines you meticulously painted rubbing within your hands as you push them forward on the battlefield. While it is impossible for a video game to give you that same tangible and mysterious sensation, the development team obviously carried this thought forward in the design of the game. While playing the mechanics will not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fantastic Viking adventure using a time based turn system and cards. Beautiful visuals and plenty of replay value make this a must have for fans of Mythology, Board games and tabletop players. 9\10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the concept but who designed this learning curve?! Mission 1 - get to the boat. Okay that is pretty easy. This is the tutorial. Mission 2 - fight an endless flow of enemies that spawn from 6 different locations on the map. Destroy their boats to stop the enemies from spawning in while ALSO killing a boss AND do all of this with only 2 fighters?! This turns the game from "take your time, figure it out" to "you are completely overrun" in a single mission. If you are a beginner and still…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lifeless arcade game pretending to be RPG and Strategy. C-grade interface with particularly awful movement (e.g., selecting units individually, or guessing where group movement will place the followers.) No scrolling of the battlefield. Poor visibility. Shameful absence of manual saving. Illegible texts on the cards... Could have been playable with a pause, or with a turn-based approach, but this mess is only accessible to the reflex crowd, not to the majority of strategy enthusiasts. Even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its fun. A bit like playing with toy soldiers, just animated. ^^ Hope there will be some medival thing in this style too. There is only one thing that sucks BIG TIME ! You have to finish the map (or board like its called in the game) or you have to start it all over. Whats the problem with starting again next time on the last waypoint ? Not every gamer is some 15year old with endless time on his hands. It spoils the fun if you are chained to the game for the next hour or so or it was all for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had the appearance of a turn-based tabletop minatures strategy game on hex. Instead, they tried to turn the genre real-time, and it just doesn't mesh well. Tabletop games aren't real-time because moving pieces faster than the other player is goofy. Unfortunately disappointed. Implement an initiative system and I'll give it another go. Best of luck to the devs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very barebones and intuitive to play. the lack of turns can be confusing and it's so unpolished. This is an "early access" title as in its been able to buy for 3 years as of now and nothing really innovative or quality has been added to make this really worth supporting. It's a gem of a game getting a poor quality cut setting it into just another early access game thats just uses its title of not finished to never finish and polish the game just get money for a sub par game that people hope…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why create these awesome tabletop-style maps and then put a real-time game on it? The game certainly has charm and does some things right (not everything!). But seriously: the setting would be ideal for turn-based strategy, perhaps with deck-building controls. What you get is real-time with interruptions, the cart system running alongside it, and weak enemy AI. That's why the battles are unfortunately nothing special and tend to be boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an ok game. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, but it's not very interesting either. Coming into this game, I was expecting something like HeroScape or Settlers of Catan; what I got instead was an extremely shallow RTS wannabe. Probably my biggest problem with the game is its focus on realtime action. I guess this would be fine if Wartile weren't trying to model itself after a TABLETOP game - seriously, do you know of ANY tabletop RPGs where units fight each other in real time? This…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is very nicely drawn, but the tactical options are quite shallow and the gameplay becomes quite repetitive very quickly. Also, the user interface between missions is not great. It is not a bad game, but I was expecting more of it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a lifelong tabletop gamer. Given the choice between a tabletop game and a video game, I will pick the tabletop game every time. As such, I really thought I would love this game, but it fell very very flat with me. By automating combat, they have removed essentially the only interesting or tactical part of the game. For two levels, all I did was move miniatures around. There was no limit to this. There were no obstacles to overcome. There was no strategy required. Every two-three seconds, I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Instead of making more maps, which shouldn't be an issue in a game this simplistic, the devs instead essentially force you to replay the existing ones up to 3 times to get good gear. The combat itself is also very simplistic and gets old quickly, so it's definitely not something that can keep you hooked. Not worth the time IMO.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting time based tactics game that fulfills the gaping hole left by the lack good of turn based tactics game recently. The biggest gripe I have about this game is although it boasts of having beautiful scenery... it is quite lacking in details. Pros: Time based mechanics means that moving and positioning is just as important as fighting. Despite a lot of flaws, the game is still fairly fun and playable. Cons: Details are missing from the scenery as not even the water is flowing or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lovely visual style, but suffers irreparably from clunky controls and the unfortunate decision to have only a real-time/cooldown mode with shallow tactical involvement which I couldn't really get into. Would likely be much better as a turn based tactical game. Oh well.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is broken. When I complete the first level, it crashes. When I launch the game again, I have to play the first level again. Not fun anyway, even if it worked.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like many of the reviews here, I agree. The controls are horrible at best. It is hard to believe that any group of testers played this game and did not complain. I have played the first two maps and this is unforgivable. Pity, the game is beautiful with nice voice and music and exactly the kind of thing I want to play. However, I am unsure just how much torture I will be able to endure. To clarify, I am playing with a game pad, maybe I will try mouse and key.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An attempt at making a hex based combat game (like Warlock Master of the Arcane) real time. It's a nice idea, but it doesn't really work that well. There isn't really skilful micro, just a clickfest; Wartile manages to combine the worst aspects of two of my favourite genres. This is a very pretty game, so if you're looking for something frantic but not too strategic that is pleasing on the eye, this will do the job. For fans of strategy games though, I'd give this a miss.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow... I googled how to fix the crashes and for most games that are "new" it works. This game has been out since 2018. Lowest setting for all graphics lowest windowed resolution on a RTX3070 and it crashes at the end of the first level. Windows updated and NVIDIA drivers updated. No joy... save your money... not even worth $6 if you can't play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to so badly like this game. I have gone back a couple times to revisit this game to see if the controls have gotten any better... unfortunately, it has not. The the problem is the game is laid out in a hex turn-base format, but the game plays action style. This is where the frustration comes in. Its the movement of pieces and trying to put them in the position you want for strategic battles, but I cant because maps are so frustrating. Your warriors are cut off because…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it never worked, it always crash after the tutorial, i and many more people wrote of the problem to the devs but after months they never reply to us, they're not a serius company and i'll not buy any other game from them
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On some boards, enemies will drop quest items (mostly for optional objectives). These quest items occupy a tile, and no one can move onto the same tile as a quest item drop. This ordinarily wouldn't be a problem, but as this is a tactical game, you will often be fighting in choke points. If you defeat an enemy, and that enemy drops a quest item in a choke point, you run the risk of being unable to progress. This can occur because you apparently cannot pick up quest items in combat. And you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right, so.. I have had my beady eye on this little beast for a while.. Game play is as smooth as a babies buttcheeks & athsetically pleasing to one's eye! I love the customisation of the units you play, skills & weaponry give you plesure in gameplay. More levels would be nice as I bought it yesterday & have pretty much completed the levels given, although not on all difficulties. I would reccomend this game as its pretty fun.. what more do ya want to pass some free time. 8\10 for me for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game as it looks cool, but although the gameplay is innovative it's a little to clunky and hectic for my taste. The another down point is how the game displays the customisation section, while it's cool to see gear change based on what you equip, there is no easy way see everything your character is equipping (you have to hover over a replacement item to see what your character has equipped) and no way to sort the items in your inventory. Also found it very buggy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like the look of the game but combat should really be turned based.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In general, this game does not have much merit. As a wargame, the gameplay is however linear and of little freedom. You can do no more than what the designer have wanted you to do and the game is of course not replayable. Therefore in order to lengthen the playtime, the designer decided to enforce repetitive farming with unreasonable level difficulty. Both the character movement and the skill use have adopted the “drag and drop” action, which has no point other than increasing the risk of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review got a bit long, so I'm going to put the TL;DR part first: "I didn't know it was possible, but somehow this computer skirmish game is clunkier than a tabletop skirmish game. At least when I move a piece in a tabletop skirmish game, I don't randomly go flying across the room." Original review left below. ---------------------------------------------------- So, let's start with the good: making a miniatures game on PC is a really cool idea. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a "action turn based" game so you are having a cool down on movement instead of waiting for the enemies to move after all of your figures. You prepare your party between each level, can buy new party members, buy equipment, change cards from your deck or abilities from your party members. All levels can be played 3 times at different difficulties. I played through the game in 25h and did almost all levels 3 times. So...is it fun? Well, kinda but not so much like you would expect it.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't see a single bear in WARTILE. It's not surprising. After standing on approximately 100 invisible Bear Traps in an early level I managed to resist the urge to uninstall and actually found the rest of the game quite entertaining. The levels look really really good and are fun to plan a path through. Character progression through tokens and equipment is satisfying. The special powers feel useful. Combat wasn't quite as strategic or tactical as I expected given the hex grid etc. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wartile is one of the coolest games I have played in a very long time. The settings are stunningly beautiful, the action ( which you can zoom into VERY close) is smooth and fluid, and the abilities gained seem powerful without being OP. And don't be fooled by the smallish-looking battleground in the game's spashscreen; the battlegrounds are big and hold hidden secrets. Are there any bad things? well, yes, a bug or two but none that I have found to be game-breaking. Wartile proves what a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not bad. The environments are very cool and I like how the game generally is. The only thing I don't like is the timer system. I really dislike how it's implemented. I think just traditional turn based would've been better. Overall, I give it a 6/10. It's too minimalist and there isn't much to it. There is just the campaign. You get a few characters that you can sort of customize and thats it...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quirky but neglected game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great graphics, unique look and gameplay. However, way way way too slow. It kills the mood to play this game at this pace for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was on the fence about getting this for ages as I like turn-based but am not an RTS fan, though I do love classics like Cannon Fodder. Happily, this gets the balance just right so as not to be the same as a turn-based game, but not RTS either - and that blend is where the worth is in this title, for me. If, like me, you are attracted to the look, but not sure how it will play, I'd say the biggest plus for me was it does not have loads of units over huge maps that you have to keep track of as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So the apocalypse has arrived IRL and I've gotten a chance to revisit the game 3 years after its release. While not without it's bugs and feature-light UI, they have certainly given the game a much needed polish that was lacking on release. There is a voice-over narration at the beginning and end of each battle, there are two new specially themed boards, other boards, a full story line, and other game play. In addition, they have announced the release of the first expansion due 2020 May. So,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PROS: • Amazing presentation. The figurines, environments and the depth of field look so good • Vikings • unique gameplay • You can replay missions on higher difficulties to get unique equipment and cards/spells CONS: • Only 12 Missions • The UI could use a rework! Especially the shop isn't very user friendly • minimalistic story • Every character has just 3 skills - and you can just select one to use in batlle • Group movement could be improved and the cooldown reduced when not in combat • no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wartile is a cooldown-based RTS-RPG played on lavish tile board levels, highly reminiscent of Warhammer 40K boards. Developed by Playwood Project, a Danish studio, the game follows a handful of Viking characters as they accomplish missions inspired by Norse history and mythology. The studio is committed to the vision of creating a digital tabletop game, so you literally play with figurines that you pick up with the mouse and decide which one goes in which tile as you navigate the levels and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10 - Bought on sale, would not recommend at full price. May have been OK as a turn based game, but the RTS element when combined with movement mechanics, seemingly deliberate early game enemy spam and enemies that spam area effects like poison that will strip your health way faster than you can move your units or kill enemies and move is very frustrating. Overall looks pretty but gameplay is often cumbersome and even slowed down can be annoying. On balance, early game had me rage quit due to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a good idea but would have been better as a turn based. It's not a very bad game, just not a good one either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played for 90 minutes and needed to replay same map over and over to get experience. Got bored after 4 times. This day and age, you generate maps easily on well designed games. Not acceptable and refunded. too bad since combat was fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tabletop quest for the Sagas Wartile is a strategy game allowing the player to take command of a Norse warband on a quest to save their land from a mysterious plague. Developed by a very aptly named danish studio PlaywoodProject, the game plays as a miniature wargame. Each character in Wartile is represented by a wooden figurine, battling their way across adorably detailed dioramas. While the game had visibly limited resources to work with, the developers have fully committed what they had…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, I really like table top games, so this should have been a perfect game for me. Unfortunately, the game is made in a bad way. Controls are very clunky and moving a larger group of 4 is just pain. Next big issue, the hex system: you can't move to certain fields, if there is an other figure which is going to move there. The whole band management system makes little sense, there is not a lot of equipment to find and after a view rounds, the merchant makes no sense, because you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept of this game really grabbed me, but unfortunately the actual gameplay ended up feeling rather lifeless. While the terrain and environments are beautiful in the preview video and photos, in-game the graphics feel drab and dated. The miniatures are similarly nothing to write home about, borrowing the colour pallet of gritty shooters circa 2006. The greys and tans of your units blend right in with the muddy greens and browns of the environment. There is very little vibrance to keep…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WARNING: Despite what the visual design of the game suggests, this is not a turn based game! Such a big and basic art direction mistake tells long about the studio's expertise/thoughts put in this game's design.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Picked this up on sale. Love the art style. The game boards are done really well. Though limited, are big enough to keep you immersed. Game mechanics could use some work though. Game tends to get stuck while slowing down time when hovering over play cards. Also, menu prompts tend to get hidden behind other on screen items. The buy sell organization could be improved. I would recommend this game to anyone who like table top games. Not a long game overall but if you plan on completing all goals,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just buy it and test for an hour, then decide worth it or not. To me, it's not engaging. I've played for 30 mins, finished the first tile, and I found the wolrd lifeless, I didn't get the motivation of these guys, didn't get how they relate to each other. The setting is pretty clear, but it didn't make me believe in it. Sometimes you can play something «unbelievable» just because of mechanics, but it's not the case. They fight pretty automatically, putting the specials aside. I'd like to mark…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: I've won the game and it is pretty fun. The key factor to realize is that the archer is the most important character using the volley card. Once you get used to the game I really like the concept but it was challenging to mentally adjust to the different style of game (cool down vs turn based) coming from the turn based world. Using the slow down feature is essential until you get up to speed. On the higher levels it is absolutely critical to use the slow down feature to dodge tough…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game, it looks like a real diorama. I wish there were more games like this. Would be breathtaking with VR.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty basic, but I like it. It's a mix between RPG story and level up mechanics with turn based movement and auto-attack mechanics, which is unique. You can slow time to help, play "free" unique player cards, and play power ups with points you accumulate through doing missions. Heroes are pretty basic in melee and range type, but all have unique abilities. There is a shop and you can swap out your power up cards, and map is pretty diverse. I enjoy the whole table top type experience from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For this review I am going to give it a recommendation though with a heavy caveat and upfront warning. Wartile is what you expect it to be; a tactical figurine war game. Nothing more and nothing less than this. If you are expecting a deep complex system or something like Dungeons and Dragons this isn't it. If you played such games as Warhammer or Heroclix, then you get what it is. So that is the caveat. Great for individuals that enjoy such games but not really recommended for those that have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been playing this game for about a month, off and on when time allows. Firstly the look is that of a miniature game is quite pleasing and full of texture. The story is fine and strings the various battles into a gradual increase of difficulty and complexity. The various figures at your command have differing skill sets and different weapon/armour requirements. This allows some play in what you may want to field against a certain force. Add to this are special action cards to use a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fantastic game and while some may not enjoy features like the slow time mechanic instead of a full pause i think its fitting in a game tha wants to make you feel rushed but not limiting your ability to reason and make strategic movements.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really beautifully built game. The slowmo feature is nice, but I felt I wanted to use it more than was necessary. That's on me though. Make the game play more as a turn-based strategy than real-time. Honestly, I would love to use these boards for DnD. The story fit very well to boot. Hope the developers continue to put out great games like this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun game with absolutely beautiful graphics. The game play however is a bit repetitive and the maps limited in scope for tactics.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted this game for a long time and finally go it in the summer sale. I'm happy I eventually got the game, it's unique to anything I have played before, with simple mechanics and gameplay and a beautiful art style. I really enjoy the combination of RTS and TBS into a pleasant, relaxed experience. Where they game is not so good is the movement mechanics. It can be quite clunky and having to click and drag each of my units across the whole board is giving me a bit of RSI. The equipment…
