Let me start by saying that I love novels. Whilst the environment, and cast, are getting described, I feel like it still leaves enough room for the reader to use their own imagination. After all, it's an entirely different experience than a movie, as it implements the thoughts of the main character as well. In this case, The Innsmouth Case happened to catch my interest as it's a "choose-your-own-adventure" game, presented in a novel-like style. I found the premise interesting and always wanted…

video review: https://youtu.be/eNbF5V3roYE written review: The Innsmouth Case is a choose your own adventure game that focuses on you surviving a single day at Innsmouth, rather than actually solving a case. It took me several tries to figure out that the game ends abruptly when you survive an encounter rather than continuing on for you to actually try to solve a case. You pick options and can reload any chapter that you've reached. That's the gameplay. Pros: - Once you realise that the…

"The Innsmouth Case" is a lovingly designed text adventure game in the style of H.P. Lovecraft. The player is sent to the small harbor town of Innsmouth with the task to find a missing girl, free to decide what to do next. Every action has consequences, some are of good nature, some can lead to very bad story developments. The animated drawings, background music and sound effects in the individual scenarios lightened up the reading. The completely out-of-place and dry humor of the main…

I have never seen writing this poor in a game. The "humour" is stuff like 'you dash at the speed normally reserved for eating chocolate cake'. The whole thing is an insult to Lovecraft.

I wish I would have played the game after buying it, because I`m to late for a refund now. If you are expecting a moody detective adventure or something in that direction, you are wrong here, Its a comedy and not a good one. It kills the mood on the first page and doesn`t get better, But humor is subjective, Maybe it is what you are looking for. There are positive reviews after all. But try the demo or play it in the refund window to be sure.

Overall, no, mostly for that opening disclaimer. If you're going to find a person from the past "problematic" enough that you have to start by disavowing him, then don't seek to profit using his IP. Either let people form their own value judgments on the work, or avoid it--the least you can do is not simultaneously promote it while trashing the creator. Beyond that, the game is okay. Decent Choose Your Own Adventure with legitimately branching paths. The writing is okay--often obnoxiously…

This game is simply not good if you are in the market for a decent game inspired by the works of Lovecraft. It fails at comedy and fails miserably to combine horror and comedy. This is because the "comedy" consists mostly of toilet humor and other childish crap that completely ruins any attempt to convey cosmic horror. Stay far far away from this game.

A dark, mysterious tale told so well as to have chills running down your spine? No! This is a Lovecraftian tale rewritten by amateurs, whose attempts at interjecting comedy into the game is cringeworthy at best. Make no mistake about it, we are talking Amy Schumer levels of bad comedy here. It is hard to become immersed in a Lovecraftian game when the investigator is like "Durr, the client won't let me claim back money for in-app purchases". The only scary thing about this game is that…

While I kind of enjoyed playing this game for some time, I will give it a thumbs down for being completely misleading. "A desperate mother, a missing girl and a mystical place - a case could hardly be more challenging." - Spoilers: You get none of those things. There's not even a criminal case to solve here, even though the demo of the game heavily implies it. Instead you get: - a funny parody of a horrorgame a la Scary Movie, Fantastic Movie, Superhero Movie etc. If you enjoy movies like…

There is nothing really lovecraftian in this game. It is a horror-parody-choose-your-own-adventure that namedrops Lovecraft a lot, but doesnt actually understand or care for the source material. It is basically stringing together random horror scenarios and spoofs them. The writing is not bad and sometimes actually funny, but the use of references to Lovecraft's stories here is superficial at best and false advertising at worst. If you removed them it would'nt really affect the game. If you…

Oof. I wanted to like this, but I just can't get into it. It's a tired rehash of Shadow Over Innsmouth, but the twist this time is that it takes place in modern day and that it's a wacky comedy. Just how wacky is it? In the first scene, you puke in your desk. The first person you meet in Innsmouth is named Poopingplace." There's a lot of toilet humor, way too many sex scenes, and just… nonsense. At one point I got kidnapped and was about to be burned at the stake, but a tourist passerby thought…

A very short game - I've already gotten 3 endings. Let me expound some on my problems with this game from a narrative perspective: 1) The game has some serious problems with whether or not it wants to be a serious or a parody, and it flip-flops so frequently that it ends up not being very effective at either (though admittedly, it is a more effective at comedy than horror). 2) A side effect of this is that characterization is all over the place. 3) There is a character named…

This game is sold as taking place in the H.P. Lovecraft "universe." The game begins by then denigrating the name of H.P. Lovecraft. If you're too woke to stand the author, don't use his name to sell the product, and don't write something in his creation's universe.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this one. The game starts out with a note from the developers saying they are aware of HP Lovecraft's problematic views and want to distance themselves from that, but they don't actually follow through. The game starts out immediately with some pretty unpleasant objectification of a female character and general sexism, and continues with humor that seems to want to be "edgy" but is actually just offensive and comes across as juvenile. They even left in some of…

Not up to the premise. I've tried over and over to progress through the story, making different choices, exploring various paths, yet the game keeps pushing me back into the same already explored scenarios. It's frustrating to feel like, no matter what I choose, progress is minimal and unclear. There's no real sense of direction, and often it's impossible to tell which decision will actually lead to something new. If you're a Lovecraft fan, this becomes even worse. This is a pretty fun "Choose Your Own Adventure" style game. It's a little more comical than Cosmic Horror tends to be, and the amount of comedy caught me off guard, but I quite enjoyed the overall experience. I love Lovecraft, Choose Your Own Adventure games and silly humour. I should love this game, right? Unfortunately after seeing all the endings and most of the game I can confidently say that this game is just not it. Sense of humour is subjective, but I feel like this game tries too hard and fails. It fails as a comedy and it fails as a horror. It's shame - the modern spin on Dagon is a cool idea.

The concept's ok and the story is fine, but it never really took me in after the first run through. And I had to do a lot of run throughs to get anywhere. The Innsmouth Case is not a game, it's a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". I love the premise but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. I finally gave up on it when I reached yet another passage of text that didn't flow from prior ones. There was even a passage that incorrectly attributed a vehicle to me though I didn't have one. It wasn't my car the paint dripped onto the windshield of. Given the nature of the gameplay and presentation, the game's success or failure entirely depends on how well written it is. And I just found The Innsmouth Case to be poorly written. It didn't engage me at all with the story or characters, and it is way overwritten in the sense of always choosing to use 50 words to say something that better writers would have expressed in 10. So it's not telling an engrossing story, and it's doing it with way more words than necessary -- just not worth…
