60 of 191 · most liked firstLovecraft's Untold Stories by the developer LLC Blini Games impresses with charming Unity Analytics and a game that behaves differently than you would expect at first. What does the product do? The game is based on the Unity engine. During the initialization, a telemetry service is launched which sends various hardware and software data from users to Unity Technologies. Unsolicited. Since Unity itself uses the services of Google, LLC, the BigData company also has some of the pie. Who runs the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has so many design flaws it's actually infuriating to play. Biggest one is the bleed mechanic - there are enemies that apply bleed on touch and run faster than you, and the only way to remove bleed is by items you find sparingly Also some dark floor tiles cause bleed too, and unless you have an item to remove the effect that gets reapplied constantly you die Second - the sanity mechanic. Why would you make every interactable item make you lose sanity? And the only way to restore it is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a reluctant thumbs up, because Untold Stories is good---it just tries extremely hard to block its own shot. To start, every element in Untold's design conflicts. It's a twin-stick shooter, but you'll spend more time puzzling and backtracking than in combat. Walk speed is slow, and movement options are limited, and everything feels heavy, but enemies are fast. You need to use your weapons' rate of fire to achieve good spacing, and you need to expect to get hit. Traps are practically a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally the only reason I'm not recommending a game this fun is because the developers are being incredibly stupid and hardheaded about allowing a save-on-quit feature, offering up only nonsensical excuses as to why its reasonable to expect people to play a several hours length level in it's entirety or lose all progress. Absolutely ridiculous. Update: As of April 2023, the aforementioned remains true with the dev staunchly defending their asinine decision. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly the fact that people constantly have to try and figure out what item's hidden properties are well past the 1 year mark of the developers saying they would provide a guide to tell us just that is sad. The fact they are releasing a sequel and still can't manage to do what they said they would is just pathetic. The fact that when asked again to do what they already said they would, while even explaining WHY you don't want to go to user made guides due to the lack of information in them,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game. I really do. I own and have read basically everything Lovecraft ever wrote. I'm a big fan of rogue-likes, I've poured a few thousand hours into them in the last ten years or so. This game seems like it should be right up my alley. But it isn't. There are so many baffling design choices. The sometimes legitimately impossible to spot floor traps that are hidden behind objects in the foreground from an isometric view. The wonky range of things like poison cloud ranges.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The fear of the unknown can destroy a man... but with the right knowledge (and armament) even a man can destroy a god... preferably dark huge ones that you can't quite make out in our limited dimension due to being enveloped in tesseracts and other quixotic shapes that got far too many edges and vertexes to be polite company at your typical bridge party.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On some level, I really like this game. The biggest issue with this game beyond the rogue like design in a non-rogue like game, is that this is a Lovecraft game that actively discourages you from investigating. Think about that. Lovecraft stories hinge on the mystery and detective investigations... and you're 100% actively discouraged from doing that here. Why? Who thought that was a good idea? The devs tied the story and lore of this game to items that cause horror damage. Any time you try…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I was shocked. Then I realized cthulhu is not real. Gameplay is a bit unintuitive at first but after some time you get used to it. Shooting is done automatically by pushing joystick, not the best solution really because you can't always tell where you're aiming. Ammunition is infinite so basically blast as much as you like. Dodging over traps and obstacles or enemies for temporal invulnerability. Ambience is nice and gloomy, you gonna fight many cthulhu monsters, undead, cultists,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s a great premise here, but the execution lets it down. Objectives are unclear, so progression feels aimless, and the checkpoint system is unreliable—restart often hits a deadlock and never reloads. Balance is equally frustrating: even on Easy, the difficulty feels punishing, largely because the player character moves noticeably slower than nearly every enemy, turning most encounters into unavoidable damage rather than tense strategy. With unclear goals, a broken restart, and tuning that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ahhh I wanted to like this so bad. But then you finally get used to the HAIR-TEARING traps screwing over one character, and then the next character slaps you in the d*ck with the next load of bullsh*t. Honestly. I LIKE hard games. But I don't like dumb ones. I would have loved to sink my teeth into this, but balance is the major issue here. Heck, because I'm a glutton for punishment I might even be back to not let myself be beat by this. But I'll be mad about it. If you are also a masochist…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game has a cool vibe and an interesting story, but its far too difficult and repetitive to enjoy. my biggest issues: (1) your character is just so slow compared to the enemies (2) most enemies give some kind of curse or status and the items to fix it are too scarce this game encourages exploration (you need it to beat the game), but the exploration is very risky since you are fragile. so, to progress the story, you die time after time until you lose interest. shame that this game has…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first it lured me in with the detective, the straightforward gameplay and the lovecraftian story. I was genuinely having fun exploring every inch of every map. That was just to keep me hooked long enough to get to the 2 hour "NO REFUNDS TEEHEE" point. THEN came playing the professor and the game's quality just nose-dived. I have never had such a torturous gameplay experience in my gaming history trying to play this absolute trash character. Enemies popped out of nowhere and drained my…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Cthulhu mythos and I tried to like this game, but I cant. Even on easy is super hard. Every enemy hit applies dot. Sometimes even 2. Oh you removed it with bandage? too bad that in 0.05 seconds u get another dot. Levels are cluttered with random objects that you get stuck to so you can reliably dodge enemies. And Traps every 5 meters wont help either
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is difficult for all the wrong reasons. Some characters are so bad, that progress is difficult on easy mode while others can complete hard mode with little to no issues. The mines on the Professor uses are quite possibly one of the worst designed items in this game. He has mines that trigger when stepped on. The problem is enemies often pounce on you as soon as you enter a room. This gives you zero setup time and makes the mines useless. You can try to outrun the enemy, place a mine,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, I like the game. Good character design, nice visuals and dark atmosphere etc make the game playable. As a Lovecraft enthusiast, world of the Untold Stories makes me feel the sense of uneasieness of the game. I liked it, but game is hard. For some players, that makes it more enjoyable. It was like that me for a while, but i couldn't progress the game after a point or it was so slow. Then i change the difficulty, after that there were less enviromental elements. Whole level/map looks…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is has atmosphere, the graphics are good. I could tolerate the difficulty if only this was fun. But it isn't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game starts out strong and fun, but by Stage 3 all the infuriating and bad design choices are just too much to bear. All Story and atmosphere is tossed aside for a stupid button smash kill everything top down shooter.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't call this terrible or anything; a game has to really psychologically hurt me for me to do that. heck, I don't even want to give it a negative score; the art and ambience are all fairly good and there weren't any really bad gameplay elements apart from maybe the over use of floor traps?* in the end though I just had to stop because the game struggled to hook me in any meaningful way the exploration was neat at first when the ambience was heavy, but that dissipated once every room…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A painfully slow, jank filled mess with terrible combat.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play until you beat the detectives story then uninstall and never play again, saves you from experiencing more madness and insanity that Lovecraft could every imagine.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A superb game that is wonderfully fun to play, but with enough issues to make it a 'neutral' review. As Steam doesn't offer a neutral option, this is going to have to be a negative review for all of the same reasons that the other negative reviews have mentioned: the 'save' function, the repetitive game-play loop that gets grindy, and rather weak story progression.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was my first rouge-like. I picked it up because of the Lovecraft name. I have learned that I do not enjoy rouge-likes. Two hours of playtime lost because of one mistake? No thank you. I don't have the patience or disposable time for this. If people enjoy rouge-likes, all power to them. This, however, is very much not for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tedious.. I actualy have no problem with combat itself and I did like exploring. My problem is that even if you are playing it carefully (with I dont apressiete in this kind fast pacing game) you will get under DOT effect. And sooner or latter you will run out of meds. Almost all enemies have some kind of DOT, there are traps with put you under more DOTS and there are spawners with enemies that give you another dots.. and there are everywhere. Like seriosly - spider spawner cool idea but why…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't like being harsh but this really is a very bad game and not what I expected at all based on the reviews I read. It feels like someone decided to just slap a Lovecraft theme over the top of a generic and poorly designed twin stick shooter. There are so many enemies that will just hit you with fast moving shots or janky melee attack hitboxes, or traps that show up BEHIND foreground objects so you literally cannot see them and get hit, and the solution to this was apparently to just…

unlabelledView post →This game is an exercise in persistence and masochism, in all the bad ways possible. The enemies can easily overrun you, because some maps are tiny and cluttered with random environmental junk, what can you do? Not much. Most of the enemies apply a DOT effect (bleeding, poison, acid). This is a guarantee, meaning you run out of ways to mend it pretty quickly. Items are scarce, and the way you find more is breakable containers and locked chests. Did I mention these can be destroyed (easier than…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ultimately no. I cannot recommend this game. I've played it for a long time and it's repetitive and boring, you stroll around similar spaces and shoot same enemies over and over, with not much variety of skills, items and weapons. Boss fights are samey, everything takes so much time, it's ultimately un-fun. Lovecraftian vibe is nice, yet it has been covered by bad game design and repetition. Go and play other games based on Lovecraft's works.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found that the gameplay loop was pretty weak and progression felt non existent. On top of that are frustrating traps and combat mechanics that didn't feel good. On the plus side, I really love the aesthetic but it's just not enough to save the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I thought this just another twinstick shooter. But this is much more than meets the eye. The world of H.P. Lovecraft was put in a pleasing pixel design while mechanically it manages to challenge you from top to bottom.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game; the sprite art is great and it's clear that the devs put a lot of love into it. It's just that the gameplay is absolutely infuriating. This isn't a game that's hard because it requires you to master a skill curve or think ahead. It's hard because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Characters are too sluggish to effectively avoid getting hit, and enemies are too tanky to dispatch before they can inflict acid, stun, burning, poison, bleeding, and sanity drain with a single attack.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the worst rogue-lite i've ever had the displeasure of viewing It has a decent setup with well made pixel art and effort put into the random generation but it tries so hard to be way more difficult than it needs to be, so much so that when you die you start at the beginning of a checkpoint you gave yourself not the beginning of the run probably because the devs realized no one would even attempt to finish their game if they did. some of the very very fun things about this game include…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lovecraft's Untold Stories is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The game is yet another insult to the estate of HP Lovecraft as once more his corpse is exhumed to be abused by garbage games ripping off his public domain works. This time the mobile app devs even went so far as to try make it look like this was officially the work of Lovecraft, but it's not... the garbage content here (such as it is) is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game can be difficult and frustrating. And if you're not familiar with the Cthulhu Mythos, you're pretty lost. So it's not for everyone. But it has a lot of content and references to the mythos in the form of stories, characters, monsters, items, levels, etc., which I really enjoyed exploring.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Untold Stories, oh what a shame, A game inspired by Lovecraft's cosmic name. But poor design choices make it hard to bear, I wanted to love it, but all I could do was swear.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting but confused game. It's a roguelike... but you can restart from the chapter start, it's a twin stick shooter with very flimsy dodge and hit detection, leading you to be frequently hit by instant attacks without any windup and be hit with both damage and status effects(it seems like every single enemy inflicts you with one), meaning you're meant to be in the action and simultaneously heal and bandage yourself all the time, it feels like the game would be way better if it was…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I as a big lovecraft fan say no, one must not upvote everything just because the title has lovecraft in it. The spamming of traps and bleeding is so annoying and makes the cheap combat even worse. This is not about combat being hard, its simply annyoing. The enemys run at you with light speed, no matter if they are zombies or werwolfs, you simply see a colorful mass running at you while you spam your shotgun. I know that you can do that better in 2D games, a lot better. Its not enough for me to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →**Don't believe anyone complaining about no save system, there is a save system, but not in the first level of each character, and you only get one mid-level save per level.** Probably the most accurate Lovecraftian game in terms of the depth of the lore, you can see a real love for his work in how basically every text and event of the game is directly or nearly directly referencing an actual Lovecraft story. However, most of that lore is spread between notes in death-trap mazes crawling with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game so much, I love the pixel art, I love how minimalistic but stylish it looks as well as the settings and writing but man, the game design is absolutely bad. Detective was fine but doctor jesus. You spend hours stuck because they didn't check proper rng placement and many rooms later on become infested with blockades for YOUR bullets, death traps that drain your resources and also like 20 spongy enemies per room. The fact many forum answers to some bs are "just get lucky…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome ideas, ruined by poor game design. I love Lovecraft, and cosmic horror -- so I thought an action game based on it would be fun. It's fun for the first couple stages as you explore. Then you come to the cemetery, where someone thought it would be a good idea to add not only spike traps, but spike traps that are generated at random, so sometimes they are generated behind something. Which means, you will get hit because you cant see. Then when you get hit, you get "bleed," and you have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros.: - Lovecraft setting. - Art is good than bad. - Lovecraftian stories' details and characters. - Variability. Cons.: - Boring. - Super boring. - Amazingly boring after you unlock the Witch. They should have done all the stories and locations different. But you run in the similar environment almost non-stop. That's a bummer. - Thief is too buffed. That I loved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Scaled rating 5.5/10 (RECOMMEND ON SALE) (NOT RECOMMENDED AT FULL PRICE/RESPECT FOR YOUR TIME) TL;DR Game has incredibly aggravating gameplay elements that are not skill related and plot that requires a lot of preknowledge within the Lovecraft universe. If you can get over these two things then maybe the game is for you, wouldn't recommend it to anyone for full price though. I think the game is very interesting and captivating within its own right, the game has an okay pace but overall it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The actual gameplay is the antithesis of Lovecraft. But the music, atmosphere, writing, imagery and pending sense of certain doom approaching after playing for 2 hours knowing suddenly you could possibly and probably will at any moment be ripped to pieces by hordes of horrific monstrosities or be exposed to cosmic horrors beyond your comprehension causing you to lose your mind and go completely insane ending it all almost instantly with no warning or real understanding of why and losing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some novel ideas (multiple characters with different playstyles and investigation abilities) but ultimately just kind of a lousy twinstick shooter that punishes you for interacting with objects.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good game in almost every aspect. There is ONE downside: this is a very long game, with lots of repetitive elements. It has tremendous production value, but what's pleasing in the beginning will be a chore later on. Namely, the first character, the detective's story is very well executed. The fights give you proper challenge, the exploration aspect is perfect, the devs nailed the atmosphere, but once you'll get to know the other characters every fight will be much much harder because…

Despite some technical issues, it’s a rewarding experience for fans of dark, eldritch tales. Features diverse settings, from haunted cemeteries to alien jungle cities, each dripping with mystery. Each…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a massive Lovecraft fan, and I loved this game. So much so that I 100%-ed it. There are references to all kinds of Lovecraft's stuff. It's a fairly hard game, and overall a little weird in certain aspects, but once you figure out how everything works and start smashing some Old Ones (IA!), it has a true feeling of accomplishment. If you can grab this bad boy on sale, do it, but I think full price may be a tad too much, despite how much I loved the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you don't like rougelites, you won't like this. I don't like this. D:
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lovecraft's Untold Stories is a clearly unpolished, dare I say unfinished game. Still, it's very fun. It doesn't matter one bit whether you know anything about Lovecraft mythos, the stories and characters are pretty compelling; even if they're told in a suboptimal way. The horror theming is quite enjoyable and the very few songs that make up the soundtrack are pretty good. This game isn't worth €15 but it's easily worth €5-€10. If it's on sale and you like horror-themed games that aren't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not hard but cheap AF. Playing all the time with a hand down your pants or you are getting locked by 6 different special attacks, can't act whatsoever, and get swarmed before you can get anything off. This is the least balanced BS excuse of a game I ever saw. No challenge or insta-kill. The game builds heavily about you acquiring items that give you immunities and counter enemies strongest abilities. That is sometimes absolutely impossible since enemies have special attacks that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game - like playing Diablo in the Lovecraft world.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fantastic deal when on sale, this game has a fantastic Arkham Horror monster hoe-down feel to it. The complaints about lack of save & quit are overblown.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chapter 2 with the professor is way to hard. It's a bummer because there is so much left to play but its almost impossible to beat on normal. :(
