Star Wolves 3: Civil War
Developer Elite Games Team
Large-scale battles have become a vestige of the past, depleting resources of conflicting parties. Settled space, where welfare and order had reigned, has become a cemetery for dead ships which is flooded with pirates and adventurists. From the Steam store page

What people are saying
Mixed: praised for unique gameplay, but criticised for bugs and on-rails design.
Many players appreciate the unique blend of RPG and RTS elements, comparing it to Homeworld and Freelancer. The game is described as 'interesting tactical space game' with 'fun combat' and a 'deep rich story'. [3][10][26]
However, the game is heavily criticised for being buggy, poorly scripted, and overly restrictive. One player notes 'the scripts are on such tight rails that even the slightest deviation means game over', while another calls it 'unplayable in 2024' without mods. [27][29][32]

60 of 191 · most liked firstIt has it's moments, but for the most part it's just frustrating. Poor scripting, buggy encounters. There is no autosave worth mentioning (it happens once in a blue moon) so you can often lose hours of play if you forget to save often and in different slots. The worst part though is the scripts are on such tight rails that even the slightest deviation means game over as your mothership inexplicably explodes. In short: Lots of potential, mostly wasted. A frustrating and disappointing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not a game for everyone. Play the first one if you have not yet, it's the best part of the series. If you like the gameplay then you can try this game afterwards. If you decide to play this you should go the icc forums first & download the mods there (you can find a package with 3 good mods). Keep also in mind that for normal players the difficulty levels are not labeled correctly. There is no easy setting! Easy = Normal / Normal = Hard / Hard = Insane. If you're stucked and get…

I decided to leave it public - if only because it's funny to read after all those years :D But I actually still stand by pretty much all points I made in it - probably would've written it much better these days, though. Enjoy it! And buy the game if you're into space RTS. It's flawed, but genuinely, unironically very cool! - 2025 me) ----- Now I want to be 100% honest with you, guys - this game has some flaws. Some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting tactical space game. Mixes in some RPG and management elements. Fun combat and an interesting story mode with multiple outcomes. It was a bit buggy at times particularly in handling the quest objectives but otherwise a playable game. It's a pretty expansive game universe and plenty to do in it so definitely worth the low price!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has BG/ BG2 pause system , but in space! Mothership acts as floating base for up to 6 fighters. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of tech and pilot RPG elements. Kinda buggy save alot, lots of text so you may have to read, short story. As a saving grace it has a huge solor system with lots of factions and infighting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good game for such a low price. Made with love and enthusiasm. Such a shame this franchise is no longer alive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played SW:1 - really liked it. Played SW:2 - a bit...did not enjoy it. Played SW:3 - really liked it. SW:3 is rough around the edges. Laughable conversations and grammatical errors but who cares. The game is about doing some missions, blasting pirates and upgrading your weapons and systems. Some of the missions verge on impossible. I play on normal difficulty. I thought the graphics were good. Bugs were minimal. Save often. Keep your missile bays full. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In one word, Star Wolves 3 was a disappointment. Full disclosure, I went into the game not knowing what specific sub-genre of space simulation Star Wolves was, but I have a soft spot for anything space themed and that love spans many genres. After booting the game, I was immediately both enamored and jarred by the graphical fidelity of the game. Many would say it was dreadful, but it immediately reminded me of my first time launching Freelancer way back in the early 2000’s. I maxed out the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was expecting a space sim like X3, where the learning curve is so deep, you'll spend 10-15 hours just learning how to play. Star Wolves 3 is more like a Bioware game, where there's a LOT of story. I had a mission where I had to decide between delivering a spaceship to a science facility or saving a man's family from being blacklisted by the Empire. Oh, the spaceship I was delivering had a bomb stapped on it. But the man offered me a lot of money. The choices!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wolves 3: Civil War is unplayable in 2024. I spend hours installing mods and outer stuff to make it start so it breaks afterwards. (I tried GOG and Steam versions) Publishers should invest in something first and not rely on the community to fix it for free. Note: That is a great game that needs a remaster. I cannot recommend this game for now as it would not work after installation on a modern PC.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mouse doesn't work properly on modern systems. There are a few 'fixes' in the discussions but none of them worked for many of us. You might be lucky.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The last game in Star Wolves series, also the best one (in my opinion). Like in the previous games, it is an RPG/strategy game where you command a mothership and up to 6 fighters. As you progress through the story and explore the world you get to buy new ships, upgrade them and train your fighter pilots with new skills. The choices you make in the story will determine which ships you'll be able to obtain and which pilots you'll be able to have in your team so there is some replay value in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Homeworld meets rpg. It's rpg, but instead of heroes You have few space ships. Your pilots gets experience and better skills. Instead buying equipment for them You buy better parts for the ships and better ships itself (You can remove installed parts, so don't worry where are You putting them). You have also quests like in normal rpg. Graphics is still great. I'm big fan of Homeworld so this game enchanted me right away. I played and finished all three parts. Gameplay is surprisingly good. If…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you liked freelancer, you probably will like this one also. Personally I think this one is better than freelancer. Not just about the graphics, but the whole game including game mechanism and everything. The game play is very similar to freelancer, except you wander around with a 'mothership' instead of just one vessel. The mothership can release up to 6 fighters in battle as long as you got enough pilots. Thus the control is different from freelancer too, it is more like EVE type…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game which every space game fan should be familiar with. Interesting story, fun dialogues and controls similar to EVE-Online. The game was made by Elite-Games team, which is not an ordinary developer. It's an old Russian space games fan community, which was formed in 1999. It started with the forum related to X-Tension, and then more games were added, Freelancer, X3, Elite, all the good space games, and it grew into a big community with forum, guides and comprehensive database for space…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my Review of Star Wolves 3: Civil War. SW3:CW is a non-direct Sequel to SW2 which... had its flaws. You start the game off and get instantly Asked what kind of Skill-Tree you want to follow, note that this is a Permanent selection, each of the Tree's is balanced out enough, but still there "Rocket Salvo" which when Skilled to max extent, will not only let your Pilots shoot rockets at an INSANE rate, but it also affects Big Guns/Small Guns and other types of Weaponry. Which makes the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Take the 3-dimension RTS combat of Homeworld. Mix it with the hero-based micromanagement of Dawn of War 2's single player campaign. Then add a ship/station design and atmosphere remincient of Freelancer. And you get Star Wolves 3! Star Wolves 3 is much more open than the previous two entries, but takes a while to get going. There's not a great deal to do either in free roam other than pick fights and look for hidden caches of equipment. Definitely worth the low price.

Love this game, got it when it came to steam as a buy this and get the first 2 free and enjoyed every one for different reasons. The gameplay is 3d isometric like Homeworld. The VA is so terribad it's good. The story has multiple endings so there is replay value in that. OVerall a fun romp that I have spent more hours than I care to mention playing. Reccomended. There was a 4th game planned but never…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is one of my oldest favorite there are many different endings the stories goes to different paths sometimes, it is hard and this game is not sutiable for relaxing players but it has its own unique gene and style if you are a thinker, this game is for you
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is not free of bugs. I will be blunt to tell you it falls apart from time to time and requires save quit reloads sometimes. This does not mean the game is un-playable, far from it. Once you get the hang of the somewhat simple tactical conrols of the fighters this game is very fun. It resembles most 4x style 3d space strategy games like Homeworld. Plenty of free roaming or not if you choose. The story is hard to follow and is filled with translation gaps because it is a foreighn game.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game, but after a bunch of time, I just can't. It had such potential to be a 3rd person Freespace, but the entire thing is story driven to the point that it's on rails, and if you don't click where they want you to, they spawn a bunch of ships to kill you. And if you didn't save recently, then back to the last time you did. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't spawn right on top of you, if there was a fleet that appeared from outside your scan range, but they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I miss this game, I think I'll have to reinstall it and have another go. What you see here is a rather niche game, an early RPG hybrid space RTS, it is immensely fun, and while it can involve a lot of saving it scratches an itch in space game fans. I've not found another game that really does what this game does, the starpoint Gemini games come close but not quite like this one. Looks wise it can be similar to the Homeworld games in many respects, especially with the engine trails that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 3 Star Wolves are quite the hidden gems. Each of them are the same game with a different campaign and new content. Its a mixture between an RPG and Homeworld and I must say it works well and entertains well.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah... Wander of the dev's given tracks. Cutscene. Game Over, Mothership destroyed. Funk you too. This has nothing to do with difficult, this is just a random shot to the nuts. SW 1 and 2 had flaws, but I still liked them. This here is just ridiculous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome Game, Wish We all Could get the source code of the game like warzone2100 and improve it more to have fun. this game deserve more praise. Most underrated game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful game that is amazing in literally everything. Deep rich story. Interesting addictive gameplay, consisting mainly of tactical battles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you haven't played it yet, I recommend getting SW1 first to get a picture. SW3 is basically more of the same with a bit more freedom to get sidetracked, but at it's core it's rather a new Star Wolves 1 campaign with a bit of bonus stuff and the SW2 ships than a completely new game. It's also still buggy, poorly scripted and poorly described. You'll get a dialogue about the good guys getting blocked, find some floating blockers, shoot them down and then nothing happens. Turns out you need to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is way to hard ur pilots are dum and dont fly and fight as good as the other factions ur ship cant defend itself this game has been put on super hard just for normal hate to think what hard would be like after messing with mods ive found that im starting to enjoy this game yes it still hard but being able to recruit more pilots to have a full fighter wing has made the game more playable but only till you get some mods
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get the game when it's on sale. Playing this on Windows 10 + mods, someone actually made a mod so google it or use the link below. https://www.moddb.com/mods/sw3exp Now that's out of the way let's talk about my experience. 1. The game is old so don't come looking for eye candies. 2. It took few minutes to get used to the controls but nothing a gamer should cry about unless you like to complain just because. 3. Take your time when playing this game and grind a bit because you'll need it. 4. I…

Over all: 3/10 Gameplay: 3/10 Story Line: 2/10 Graphics: 4/10 Details: You start off in this game with a crappy little ship. You have to stick to the story lines or you will be killed almost within a few minutes. Even if you save up enough money to get mercs you will still die almost immedietly if you don't play the EXACT way the game wants you to. If you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually like space games, RTS, flight, whatever. But the beginning of this kept me from going further into it, why? It was way too on rails. Pick one wrong dialogue option, move too far, get blown to bits. It could be good, I just don't want to be led by a string.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've always loved space and anything to do with it. Games like Endless Space and Sins of a Solar Empire have occupied lots of my time with such replayable gameplay. If you like spaceship adventuring and being a captain of your own mothership, then you will probably enjoy this game. The aesthetics are good, the music and sounds match the atmosphere and are nothing too crazy. The voice acting and cutscenes are below average, but do not take away from the game too much. Some of the cutscenes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Owned all the Star Wolves and always found them to be really good and entertaining games. The odd bug and crash still happens, but thankfully rarely. Remember to save.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game of my childhood. Love it for the atmosphere, characters, battle mechanics, the thing, that you can use "pause", stop the game and go for tea, or coffee, or something else, or think your next steps. It is a good, calm space game. Have only one problem: don't know how to change the language :c
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wolves 3: Civil War is a game that I recommend because: - is a method to banish boredom - have trading cards - is a tactical game - is RPG & Sci-fi Enjoy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game only provides a huge background, yet lack the contents to make it live, no wonder the ash of victory is cancelled, not very promising indeed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ohh, where to even start. I really wanted to love this game, but it's like being in love with an abusive girlfreind that just likes to out of nowhere kick you in the balls because she thinks it's funny. As endeering as this game is and as well as the intent, I can not reccomend this game to anyone who has a low tollerance for bugs, bad translation or missing features. This has all of these, some of them in droves. I don't even want to know how rushed the translator was with that many simple,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Linear RPG space game, not much depth or dificult options to be made. Possible 5 routes to be taken at mid game which won't have impact on the gameplay at all. A game to played in older systems and oK purchase under 5€.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved that I could go wherever i wanted. It was just exactly what I have been looking for in a space based game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unbalanced, random and outdated game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game would have been good if controls were better and if you could freely explore from the beginning. It currently feels very on rails and frustrating, which is awkward for a space game like this. For example if you don't exactly move your ship within a current path at some points or choose the wrong dialogue options, you get killed. Also the interface could have been better. Obviously the graphics aren't that good for the release date too, but I can overlook that for a low budget game. But a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great idea, garbage execution. Game breaking glitches, a terrible combat system, non-sensical translations (Seriously how hard is it to pay a native english speaker to read a couple hundred pages?). Don't get drawn in by the idea of what this game could be, as I did. Even for $5 it was a complete waste.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game on a whim. It looked interesting so i tried it while it was on sale. It is one of the greatest purchases ive ever made on steam. It is fun and can keep a person entertained for days if not weeks. It is difficult at times and easy at others. I highly recommend for any strategy gamers who enjoyed homeworld or anything similiar to it. I would have paid full price for this game and it would be worth every cent.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sometimes It can give you cancer while trying to pass a quest, although its one of best space game i ever played that you can spend so much time. If i need to describe it with one sentence it will be "old but gold". So yea purchase this game and give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game had so much potental. but sadly it's wasted on unforgiving combat and bugs everywhere. it feels like they launched the game before it's time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For me, it's a funny game, but not so good at gaming experience. I have been attracted by the space opera RPG and strategic games, and Star Wolves 3 is perfect combined product. I was very happy that I don't need to operate the space ship by myself like the other space simulating games, because I'm not so good at action and simulate games. The SW3 space strategic game, It makes you to choose your targets, weapons and teammates, then they'll attack your enemy automatically. There are many…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a very rough learning curve but It's so worth it. It has multiple endings and they are actualy different and worth finding. There are totaly brutal battles, if you don't like dying over and over again dont bother but if you like a challenge this game could be a new favorite.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like seemingly almost all of 1C's games, this game features a number of unpatched bugs, a horrible and laggy user interface, and just plain awkward and bad game design. Definitely not recommended.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is my all times favourite, it is worth it ,but you have to be patient before you get the big guns! Not like most poeople that just say "ah this ship sucks , it cant shoot , I dont have money" etc, its a RPG RTS game , one of a kind , had potential in ashes of victory , it died.I hope the haters are happy now.Anyway the game is awesome since recently I saw that there was a guide , which to be honest I didnt know alot of thing that were in it. :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bit of a weird little game with some weird translation shenanigans, but it plays pretty well, and honestly it's a RTS space RPG, and those are a little hard to find. And it's super cheap!
