What people are saying
Mostly positive early access with praise for nostalgia and potential, but bugs and missing info frustrate.
Many players praise the game as a worthy successor to the classic Fantasy General, with enjoyable tactical depth and a dark fantasy aesthetic. Some highlight the active developer support and promising potential for future content. [1][8][16][17]
However, critics point to significant bugs, including game freezes and crashes, as well as poor UI and lack of unit information. Balancing issues and frustrating difficulty spikes are also commonly mentioned. [15][29][32][33][35]

60 of 109 · most liked firstIf you looked at Fantasy General 2 and went "Hey, that's not a Fantasy General game but rather a 3D thing with the fighting system of Civilization 4" (which was my reaction), "Shields of Loyalty" is your real Fantasy General 2. Can't wait for new content to come along, in terms of both armies/generals and islands. Hopefully this will turn into a true Fantasy General experience, with very different options at the start. Can't ask for 4 generals as wildly different as those in FG, but one can…

After restoring the Peace the King seems to have a bad Day and send all Hereos into the Exil. Tina Turner standing in the back singing: We don´t need another heroooooo! Well, no war, no heros needed, sounds logical. But you and me, we know that this Peace will never be for long, eh? Oh yes and it comes, how it have to come. Undead were rising everywhere and are threaten Mantaria again. The King is shouting for his Heroes, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main idea behind the game is certainly not without appeal. A spiritual successor of the original Fantasy General. But the game comes with too many flaws, which heavily impact on its chore gameplay. A lot of these issues come from a lack of common sense. For instance browsing units before buying them, you can only see their raw stats, but leaves you clueless about the active abiities - if any - of the units. If you then click on a chest at the bottom right corner of the screen, then,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OK...so far this is early access. I like the developers, active and working on great things here. The game is tops, just only one island to play so far, with missions and things. Great tactics, troops to research and unlock. I love the look of the game, and voices, battle animations. They are on a great road here and the game will get better I feel as it goes. I recommend this one for sure, keep up the good work devs, really special stuff here. Just keep up the content and it will be great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game. Definitely reminds me of the old SSI tactical strategy games, especially the original Fantasy General. A bit rough around the edges now but shows good promise. If you're a turn-base strategy junkie, it's worth putting down the money now and play along in its EA form and watch how it develops. If you're not a hard core turn-base player and wants something more polished/finished, then I recommend putting this game on your Wishlist or follow it and see how it turns out in a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a clone of Fantasy General. At first it seemed OK, but the lack of polish quickly became evident. Update: The game is actually impossible to complete. When you try to start the mission "The Tower", the game kicks you out to the main menu. First, the tutorial doesn't explain mechanics clearly enough. I only understood how most things work by the time I cleared the first island. For example, I was confused why abilities like "Defensive Fire" or "Brothers in Arms" trigger…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: 12/09/2025 (Patch 1.03) Just wanted to give props to the developer for making updates as quickly as they have. They took the feedback from people about wanting access to the unit information and have been developing that. At this point, i still cant really recommend the game, theres still information missing, so far i havent been able to see any info on enemy traits, and on the tactical map the information on allied traits seems to be missing too (but it being in the army manangement…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Uninstalled after mission 3. Fog of war I understand, turn limit I can live with but both together no way I played this mission 3 times and in all of them I had all my army but I lost because I couldn't find the last enemy so if you wanna waste your time buy this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10 Hex-based turn-based strategy game that gives me Fantasy Wars vibes or Battle for Wesnoth vibes. Towns feel kinda like old school HoMM towns. Visually, it's a complete disaster. Can't tell who is enemy or ally. Units blend into the background. Boring murky monochromatic graphics. Text is terrible. Despite that, the combat & music are rather decent. So I'm a bit torn... I'm pretty sure I'll keep the game but good god do I wish it was easier to look at. EDIT: game freezes very…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first it seemed to be a really pleasant fantasy general clone, but there are simply too much annoying things go on. - bugs. mainly that in many cases the game gets stucked in a state where its still running, but you can't interact with anything. happened on the second turn of the very first map, and on average every 8-10th turn after that. - you have absolutely no idea, not even hints what awaits you in the next scenario, so you can't strategise with your deployment. The enemy deployment…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot fully recommend YET, but with a few improvements would be as good as Fantasy General II. I still enjoyed my playthrough of this, although full of frustration, so I give a lukewarm thumbs up. It is a different tactical experience from FG2, where Shields of Loyalty must be played extremely defensively. Here are notes for DEVs on suggested improvements, outside of the obvious content expansions (more heroes, artifacts, map choices, etc). Nothing too huge below as far as work effort,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the current state, this game is still not worth buying. I experienced less bugs after patch 1.02 but it's still not good enough. You are given no information about what your units can do, what the stuff on the ground does, how the combat values get computed. Offense is generally way stronger than defense. I still haven't figured out why sometimes archers don't provide off/def-ensive fire. Units are totally unbalanced. Play with an all-vezir army, as they can summon units that you replace…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yet, this is the real heir to the old ssi fantasy general. its' simplicity makes it a lot more fun than Slitherine's much more ambitious FG 2. The commander's comments get annoyingly repetitive after awhile, but they do humanize things a bit. I highly recommend this very promising title and look forward to seeing what they add to the experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll keep playing it... but first impressions are not good. I've lost the tutorial by placing my hero and then right clicking.... LOL Remove =/= Kill Mechanics seem a little convoluted Lack of different sounds when units are attacking I have not seen any progression related to the base itself in this part of the tutorial... we will see. If there is not, it will be disappointing. It feels like the game it's still in early access.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Totally unbalanced and utterly frustrating. Enemy flying untis just kill everything without counter.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great start for a game but this is still very much an EA title. + The animations, art, and mechanics are all excellent. + Music is generic but very nice + Lots of active abilities and strategic depth. - Poor english writing, and horrible AI narrator. It's impossible to enjoy the story when the narration and writing are this poor. - UI is hit and miss; about half the UI is taken up by gigantic unlabelled buttons, the other half is more informative and useful but needs better tooltips…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get this, if you are a fan of Fantasy General, but wait until end of Q1/2026 with playing, as there is still ongoing bug-fixing and balancing work according to the dev discord. Respect for the devs for keeping the support going.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[Review after the first mission] If you are a fan of old-school offerings from the Turn Based Strategy genre then this one might scratch an itch that very rarely gets attention from the industry these days. Shields of Loyalty is a sort of hex-crawling turn based strategy game where (at least so far in the EA) you take command of a legendary folk hero and duke it out with various undead and demons and other varieties of classic fantasy baddies. You can think of this game as the strategy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little Fantasy General type of war game that with more polish and depth, will get even better. If you're a fan of 90s strategy war games with a slight modern twist, then give this a try. The devs seem active.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an old Fantasy General player (the original) this is an enjoyable throwback.I like the new FG2 by Slitherine and i certainly enjoy this also. The game is not finished but it is a fun addictive game.with more islands and generals to be added to the game. If you like turn based games where you can upgrade your units i can reccomend it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incomplete game. Still have many bugs. Some scenarios ridiculously hard with way too many enemies. Needs (a lot) more polishing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like that kind of TBS games, and this one is...well, decent. Not a Fantasy General, but the Developer is following its steps, as much as his time and budget allows. There are some balance issues, need a lot of QOL enhancements, graphics…well, it’s there. But still – I had some nice time and would have given it thumbs up if not one thing – it freezes at the end of turn constantly, and about halve of my time I was replaying turns in different ways, trying to advance further. I am now on the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →God no, just no. I keep longing for that one more turm HOMMy vibe. this aint it SOOO low budget and poorly realized. The V 1.0 got me because I have so many TBS games still in EA in my library that one that gets finished is a good thing right? nope - the 1.0 in this case does not mean finished.. or ready for prime time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It should, and hopefully will be, a great successor to Fantasy General. I tried this game a couple of years ago in Early Access and played it for 17 hours, so it wasn't bad, for EA. However, on starting up a new game today, after the full release, it has game freezing bugs. My game locked up midway through the second battle right after lightning stuck at the end of my turn. I am giving it a positive review in the hopes that the Devs will keep quickly fixing the bugs and to counter act some or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're a fan of Fantasy General you'll love this one If you're a fan of turn based strategy you love this one The graphics are lovely, the music is excellent and sets the tone, and the unit synergy encourages you to make you moves carefully. It's a well crafted, thought out experience and surprisingly addictive!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reminds a lot of SSI Fantasy General. The setting appears to be darker and grittier though. Enjoying the new soundtrack tune, too. Thank you devs, well worth the wait!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game & I mean that. If you like turned based strategy games, why you dont have this game is beyond me. Reminds me of the old Fantasy General by the great SSI. When every game came out with a 150-300 page instruction Manual. The Soundtrack worth $20 US by itself. I see it on sale for $13. That should be against the law. My hats off to the Dev's. Whatever you decide to come out with, I got your back. Thanks Community. You guys are cool.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels very primitive. The gameplay doesn't give much feedback or get very exciting when you attack other units. I don't think the tutorial even told me what my goal was supposed to be in the first map. The units are too small with even the highest amount of zoom and they look too much alike. There was too much walking before encountering enemy units. I would suggest something like Elven Legacy or Fantasy Wars over this. Those are much more polished games that do this better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the game and yes, very Fantasy General, it has been sorely needed and look forward a few adjustments to the gold situations to make growth attainable. Great game and I played all the SSI's PG, FG, AG games in the past and this one is sweet on that same path. very nice but they also need to slow down on the natural weather as it is a bit much and not as needed so heavy. Overall a great game with a lot of promise.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was my game of 2025. Initially it was brutally hard, maybe a bit too much. But this challenge also made it so good and reward as old games used to be. Especially memorable for me were situations where you really felt real fear for catastrophic loses because of certain very powerful air or magic units. The art style, atmosphere and units all look great, some are even unique like these "soul hunters". Initially though, this game sadly had many of bugs but the DEVs worked really hard to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is boring to the point it's unfun to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2021 it came out with 4hrs play time......2025..still 4 hrs game play....AVOID THESE DEVS..... BLAND GAME...NO CONTENT....2021 TIL 2025..4 FU,CKI.NG YEARS STILL NO CONTENT
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game that's come a long way since I first stumbled onto it. Still has a fair way to go, but is looking good. Very reminiscent of the original Fantasy General. It has a nice dark fantasy aesthetic going on. It needs a bit more to spice up the tactics, but things like points-of-interest are being added, hopefully more. However, with this sort of game, what is really needed is random maps. Or even better, dynamic campaigns of linked random maps that can utilize the experience/skill…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like other comments already mentioned, this game is a clone of the Fantasy General series, so if you liked those games... go play them again. This game sucks for a multitude of reasons, some of which are bugs, others are game design issues, while others are simply game balance/ possibly game design issues. Just to give a quick example, there is a rock/paper/scissor type of interaction between unit types, but your unit who is vulnerable to unit type x and effective against something entirely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic strategy game really enjoyed it. I would of liked to see a random battle map generator in the game but other then that..... worth a buy. Thumbs up from me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game like fantasy general. Got unit exp, upgrade tier, experience, item and special ability. 3 factions
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot understand how this sits at "mostly positive." It feels and plays like a flash game from the early 2000s. The balance of both the economy and skills is just whatever the dev happened to think would work after giving it a couple of seconds of thought at best but above all that, it starts showing game breaking bugs after a couple of missions. I had units with mostly dead soldiers that couldn't get new units because "no soldiers are dead." In the space of 30 minutes I had rounds that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has the typical problems of games that are made with the help of Ai. Lore that doesnt make sense,Game decisions that doesnt make sense.Or atleast give the impression that it was put just 1% of thought into them. And this thought has to do with ''inspired by'' Somehow i get the feeling even the Games Title is generated with ai. In the past if a game was inspired by something, atleast we got games with heart and made into a new vision. This is an example of a shallow thing with no soul. It looks…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cost of everything from Mercenaries (waste of funds for one map use) time it takes to get XP and up grades and then the cost to purchase new more powerful units vs the enemies that seem to have ranged and air units that easily take down your units before they can attack or counter = game you lose interest in quickly (losing units = lost experience and the cost to replace is too great. Would like more variety of starting avatars, doubt that would make the game enjoyable. Cost, time and effort…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've rewritten this review 3 times now, as I keep coming back to this game hoping for change. The good news, there is change there is improvement, so I keep revising this review, and will continue to do so in hopes of informing others. This is an Indie game in both the worst and best sense of the term. On the worst side, it's just not done. The devs can write 1.05 or v 1.06 all they want, but for my guess we're at .84. Some of the abilities still don't display more than…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When they are going to put multiplayer and a scenario/map editor this is gonna be one of the top Tactical turn base strategy on steam, mark my words.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too unbalanced in it's current state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantasy General but much better looking. Is not a replica although it has been years since I played Fantasy General so obviously I don't remember the exact maps but I do remember the experience, that is one of the first games I played a campaign from start to conclusion and never lost a piece (although I did lose scenario specific units that were not part of your core unit total, you inherited them at the star of a scenario). The experience is the same joy when you out maneuver you opponent and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very uninteresting combat, doesn't feel like there's any meaningful strategy at all, just "have bigger numbers" (with a little bit of positioning ranged units for free damage, which feels alright but makes no sense - they already attacked this turn but they get unlimited extra attacks if you have enough other units to do more attacks?) I'm not sure if the voice acting for the intro is AI generated (if it is then the AI was good here) - it seems like either it must be, or it's a weirdly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty solid game even in the Early access stage and shows high potential for future gameplay. Quite beginner friendly for a TBS game whille keeping the spirit of old school Historical / Fantasy TBS aesthetic. So if you are already an avid TBS player or a newcomer to the genre, you will find this game to be quite satisfying. Updates are often and impactful. Looking forward to see what this game will offer in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mantaria's darkness called, and I answered with a steel in hand. Shields of Loyalty's story gripped me, but the promise of new heroes (hopefully soon and pls be rogue) has me itching to dive back in. I really like turn based combat. Huge fan of STS. Unit variety keeps every battle fresh, and the faster animations are a godsend in early access in my opinion. I like archer mechanics and i build around that. But building an army? the gold consume is a lot, but a rewarding one. This world is not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shields of Loyalty is a great, enjoyable game, I would certainly recommend it to turn based strategy players. There are various units and scenarios, together with training and special objects to consider, whilst learning the best way to proceed. I suppose there are more features that will be incorporated in the future, from what I understand, making the game even more appealing. I find the game absorbing and quite challenging, this is not going to be a walkover by any means. There is also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game Freezes all the time and sometimes it all out crashes. What more can I say. Also another issue I have with the game is that you have to spend your hard earned gold on reinforcing your units mid battle. Which not just cost you, your gold but also some XP on the unit you reinforce. If the unit survives the battle they are reinforced for free and lose no XP. But this don't matter for many of your units since they will not survive the battle without you reinforcing them, and you cannot…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful artwork, challenging AI, combat is easy to understand but hard to master.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very promising fantasy strategy that the developers are clearly keen to polish up and improve upon; responding quickly to bug reports and feedback... Seems decent for the price, looking forward to getting into the thick of it now the Chokepoint mission is fixed :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this game simply outstanding with more than 55 years of wargaming behind me especially when one considers the gaming value against its price and where it is in the development cycle. In two days, I have already out in about 12 hours in happily slugging my way with honed strategies through the first island.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like where this is going! Gonna be good when when its fully released! As I predicted a really good TBS!! if you like or liked Fantasy General then this is for you!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent Fantasy warfare game. Turn based combat similar to fantasy general. You build an army and try to conquer the enemy. Rock, paper, scissors combat in that some units are better versus some units but weaker against others.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note as of January 2022 this game is VERY Early Access with very limited content but enough to demo the gameplay. I believe this can be the real Fantasy General 2 when complete and it looks really promising.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →...nice little game, bringing back some original Fantasy General vibes. Kinda hard, always strpped for cash - also, an "undo move" button as well as an UI overhaul would be nice later.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am loving the varied tactics. Having combined arms effects , with the rock, paper, scissors of unit interaction, and terrain effects creates a game where your combat choices really matter. The interface is easy to use. The units are varied and the graphics are good for this type of game. The units have several unique abilities each. I can't wait to see how the game turns out on completion. This is a game that I can see playing for as long as development and expansion continue. A few…
