Critics, per Wikipedia

The PC version received "generally favorable reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. PC Format found the game unremarkable, stating that it "...passes the time, but gets old fast." IGN was slightly more positive, saying that the game is "...a solid if unremarkable game." Because the game has an open ending, IGN said it had "good replay value as you can take different career paths each time you play." The game received praise from Ron Dulin of Computer Gaming World, who stated that: "...it's a continually engaging experience." However, he disliked the pace at the beginning, saying, "Port Royale 2 is somewhat slow to start. It can take a long time to earn enough…

Great old childhood game and still fun. How to play Port Royale 2 on Windows 10 (for AMD users) Von Mitsukuni "1. First step... ...is make the game playable. (Otherwise it won't even start in Windows 10.) Go to your default game directory. Usually; C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Port Royale 2 Right-click on PR2.exe -> Properties On Compatibility tab, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Select "Windows 98 / Windows ME" 2. Don't bother - the Steam edition requires unreasonable amount of fiddling around with compatibility settings. Sure, it's an old game, it's to be expected etc. BUT the GOG version works out of the box. So... yeah. Don't repeat my mistake.

Before you purchase this game, you need to fully understand that Steam offers no support for old, third party games like this one. This version is currently unplayable on Windows without modifying the files, and even then it hasn't launched so far no matter what I've tried. I'm past the point where Steam will issue a refund in spite of the fact that I haven't actually played a single minute of the game, let alone gotten it to launch. Spend your money on a CD reader and a CD copy of this game…

This game is great. I highly recommend it for those looking for a game in the business management/logistics genre, but the Steam version is vaporware. I used to play the Steam version of this game on Windows 8 and it took technical workarounds that went beyond checking a few boxes in the windows “compatibility settings” menu. At some point the game just stopped working. The Steam version has never worked on Windows 11 in my experience. Steam support will tell you that you need Windows XP /…

Got this game to work properly 2022 on PC with Windows 10 and NVIDIA GPU (RTX 3060). See my guide below: Best bang for buck entertainment on Steam? Bought my copy on Steam for less than 1 Euro. It's a fun trading game. Supposedly the best Port Royale title. To get the game working on a newer computer, you need to follow a step-by-step guide that was posted by one of the previous reviewers (TinnitusFabi) here on Steam, and maybe google a little if that doesn't help fully. Here's my summary…

BUYER BEWARE! Game not compatible with new Operating Systems. A few potential fixes floating around on community boards but after spending hours trying them all still didn't work for mine, and had refund refused by Steam. So if you want to try it you do so risking you end up paying and getting nothing - so just wanted you all to be aware.

This is simply the best version of Port Royale. New versions of the game somehow lost their focus and also the glamour. Even that simple songs and sounds in this game seem to bring you closer to the Caribbean ambient than any other game. Although you will find improvement point to this game after playing it for hours, none of the successors of this game really addressed these issues with great success in my point of view. I really recommend this version, for trying to experience the fact that…

0/10 Comepletely unplayable, crashes instantly. To attempt to fix this you have to change files, download files, and disable things in windows defender. Lord knows if the fixes are even up to date. This used to be / is still one of the best games out there but yea... we dont get to enjoy that. The sale is a scam, if you want this game buy it elsewhere. My disappointment is immeasurable And my Day has been ruined.

I played it a lot back then, it is pretty much good old piece where the gameplay mattered. you can see the diff nowadays - game ain't no easy fluke and when you screw even in a tutorial like scenarios, you're done, there is no cheap help or backdoor just to load. It is much more complex than PR3 and it has so many features to explore for the new players. I found it on steam for 0.79 cents!!!! game runs on W10 with zero issues either widescreen is fine. if you like…

very deep, but only as deep as player chooses. you want zero combat and extremely complex trading options you got it. you wanna build up some money and be a pirate that's an option. You wanna buy a letter of margue and hassle other countries that's another arc. You want to do missions for governers? Another option is to storrm pirate strongholds, and you can even raid cities of foreign enemies

This is one of my all time favourite games, however on Windows 10 the water graphic is like an old TV on a blank channel, just shakey epilepsy causing fuzzy mess. Can't seem to fix it, makes the game basically unplayable. EDIT: Game no longer plays at all. Tried reinstalling, changing start up options, starting new game. Game finishes loading animation, then application freezes and has to be closed through task manager.

===GAMEPLAY=== The gameplay is simple: take a ship and start trading to make money. ===BUGS/MISSED OPPORTUNITIES=== The game is incredibly old, therefore you can expect the kind of issues you get playing old games: poor compatibility, practically no technical support, no patches or updates, very minimal options and unusual screen sizes. ===GRAPHICS=== The graphics, while still acceptable and pretty good at the time, doesn't hold up to today's standards: the reflections are simple, the trees…

If you consider yourself a grinder, like the 1700's era, and enjoy trading logistics then you should pick up this game; this is one of my classics. I thoroughly enjoy the game mechanics, particularly the city building and trade functions. The ship to ship combat is a bit outdated but is far superior to Port Royale 4's turn based system (I'll always consider real time superior). I haven't played Port Royale 1 but I'd recommend this one as the best of the lot. This game is kind of a cross…

Possibly my favorite game to this day. Steam version wouldn't work at first and I see people pointing out various fixes: running compatibility mode for Win 98/ME on both the game itself (PR2.exe) and PR2Config.exe solved the issue for me. The water looking like static I solved by enabling compatibility mode for reflections in PR2Config.exe. The only thing I couldn't get to work was working custom logos. One last thing - I never played this game relying on businesses/big trading fleets to make…

Port Royale 2 is a great game, perhaps even the best in the series. But once again, we're faced with a lackluster, half-baked release riddled with graphical glitches and a lack of customization options. This is yet another reason why you should buy classics on GOG.com. They know how to do it right, so leave your money there. Refunded.

Port Royale 2 is an ancient game from 2004. It's a whopping 19 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Not everyone will be familiar with this series of games, it's not to be confused with Sid Meier's Pirates!, instead, this game has you controlling a pirate era town in the fledgling Americas and you need to manage your population,…

Older game. Seems to revolve around trading and building up one’s reputation. As this is in the Age of Pirates, that can include eliminating other pirates… or seizing vessels from many a nation. Can’t say more than that, since I am still getting the hang of things. Still looks decent, and probably a time sink for those who get into it. Recommend.
