It's a "just one more turn" game, and that says a lot. But, finally finished it and was a good ride. The music is good. Graphics are still nice, they might be old, but really, have you seen plenty new games? Many are far worst looking. Story wise, OK. No bugs or crashes. The compaign is huge. Now, the game is hard. Is a grindfest. Basically, all the scenarios require the…

Uninstall Age of Wonders 2. 2 Delete all remaining installed files in the game directory. 3. Reinstall Age of Wonders 2. 4. Set compatibility for aow2.exe and aow2setup.exe files in install directory for windows xp service pack 3 5. Go into config and set your resolution, check "use direct 3d" and uncheck "allow resolution switches". 6. Run game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Being an old school/day one fantasy based rts fan i've been wanting to play these fun games here on Steam as well, just as when i first played them over a few decades ago on my discs. This review is actually my personal workaround which i used to successfully run it on Win10. How to run the game in Windows 10 (Windowed/Widescreen/Fullscreen mode) effectively. Hi guys, i found a personal fix for myself and hopefully anyone who's hoping to play this game in a near to fullscreen mode. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd recommend the game, IF it had been properly maintained to work reliably on modern hardware. As it stands, it barely works, crashes often and has resolution issues if you are trying to do anything higher than 1080p. It just isn't ready for modern systems. Its a shame really, there is so much potential in this classic.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok so I kept reading that The Wizards Throne is a cult classic amongst this genre so i owed to myself to at least try it out. While indeed it is much better than the original game, this one in the end suffers from the same problems that the original had. Pros: - Great epic feel to the campaign setup - Ingenious sphere system and scenario progress - Aged moderatly better than predecessor - Good music and decent voices Cons: - Attractive to only a small niche of players - Hard to get into -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is outdated and should not be bought to play it on modern systems since it crashes frequently.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not work on windows 10 64bit. I tried it and it only launches with a black screen and stays black permanently.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game for hundreds of hours back when it came out years ago, back when CDs were the medium. Unfortunately my CD was scratched beyond saving (twice), so when I saw it available on Steam I jumped on it. To me, there are few other games that can even be mentioned in the same breath as this game, even fewer can actually compare to it. The gameplay is extremely smooth, there are no balancing issues that I have experienced, and the story of the campaign is one of the extremely few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Wonders 2: The Wizards Throne is a very old turn based grand strategy/4X game (from 2002) where you build a magical civilisation, build your army units, and wage war on your enemies, assisted by powerful global spells and magic. While there's 4K support, the game fonts don't display properly under Windows 10 Oct 2018 update (and maybe other versions too). So the text is all unreadable gibberish. This renders the game unplayable. The publisher should remove the game from Steam…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed Age of Wonders 2 immensely the first 40 hrs. It felt like a good fantasy novel: moody and atmospheric and slow-burning in the best of ways. However, after 40 hrs, serious fatigue set in due to some unfortunate design choices. That slow burn novel suddenly turned into "The Wheel of Time": strong first few books, sluggish middle. And I put the game aside after 80 hrs without completing the campaign. THE GOOD: - Sweet spot of complexity. Whle not as deep as Paradox games, it's deep…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne is the sequel to Age of Wonders the epic fairytale classic. I owned the box edition along with Age of Wonders and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic back in 2004, so it's somewhat of a nostalgic title for me. To get this to work on Window's 10, I had to set compatibility to XP Service Pack 3, Disable Full-screen optimisations and Run this program as an administrator. Also, for configuration i had to untick Allow Resolution Changes and Use Direct3D. However,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9 out of 10 dentists recommend bruhing your teeth. I grew up on this game and i think it is great but it is awkward at times and hard to understand. Yes i recommend it but it is a hard sell. Its just RISK but with middle earth races, and you are wizards. Honestly hate the new direction of AoW 3 and 4. Not a fan of the Civilizations feel they give.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the first one when it was brand new on the Best Buy shelf. This one came out later in life when I was playing "other stuff", so I was looking forward to playing it. Bottom line I can't play in Fullscreen and when you enlarge window mode is screws up the map scrolling using the mouse so you have to use your keyboard arrows (ackward). So that leaves me playing in a small windowed box that feels like I am playing on my phonescreen. I use Win10, there were several solutions, none of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic turn based strategy game, it is much like Heroes of Might and Magic but with additional focus on the player character, who is a character on the map and can cast spells from a wizard tower. Definitely a little slow paced for modern tastes but it can really suck you in once you get going.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great classic. Game is reminding of HOMM series with turn based strategical map campaign and tactical battles. Excellent and original races and units, colonization, town building and razing, spells and creatures.. Great trip back to childhood years again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad but decidedly slower and longer than the first game. The story doesn't hook you and manually controlled battles (optional) are still painful to endure. If you're up for a long slog through, have at it... but I would not generally recommend due to its sluggish pace.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A focused, atmospheric fantasy strategy with real wizard vibes Age of Wonders II: The Wizard’s Throne feels like playing a proper archmage running a realm, not just a generic strategy ruler with a spellbook on the side. The whole design revolves around your wizard, their tower, and their domain of magic, which gives the game a strong identity and a more focused feel than many other fantasy strategy titles. The campaign has a good sense of progression: unlocking new spells, improving your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →REFUND: good old game, unfortunately had to refund because of it being impossible to play correctly due to resolution problems primarily in this version.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably a nice game if one invest enough time into it, but its 2018 and games have come a long way since it was released. Everything is really tiny on my big screen, and there are no in-game display settings. As 45 minutes of game play didn't leave me spellbound, I pulled a magic one and erased it from my computer. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are lots of improvement to its predecessor, but there are some things which were actually done better in the first game. The graphics, city building and combat are improved. However, the campaign is a far cry from the one in the first game. The original AoW had 2 branching campaigns, each with 3 different endings. Player's character was fully customizable, leveled-up and learned new skills as you progressed through the campaign. You could transfer research, artifacts, heroes and units…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like Fantasy and Top Down RTS then you'll love Age of Wonders II. It's actually better than Age of Wonders 3 in so many ways. If it goes on sale I'd say it's a MUST BUY for this genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s a big list of spells, many details to track, loads of different units to recruit, train, and summon, a good level of challenge, an interface that doesn’t get in the way of playing the game, and a very intriguing end-game sequence. It's one of those games you can start playing one evening, and then the next time you look up it's three in the morning. With beautiful graphics, a smart AI, and a dragon’s hoard of replayability, Age of Wonders II is a winner. Truly, A phenomenal game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best AOW and it has one of the best scores.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadow magic has all this and better, such a classic and there's quite a few good mods out
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →too many issues with this game. from random black screens on startup.. to really old graphics which doesnt work well with the larger monitors (and unable to select anything but 'window' in the options).. to REALLY bad RNG.. constantly getting squashed by low level units.. yet my units miss miss miss! there is no real strategy.. just spam basic units (no point in advanced units.. because they die just as easily!!) until you have enough to attack a town.. accept the ridiculous losses and move on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not know, may it's the best of AOW, may be AOW:SW was better. Anyways. they do not make games like this anymore. AOW 3 is worse.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of older classic turn based games. Give it a try if you liked Heroes of Might and Magic Series or DIsciples
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this game for 50+ hours now cant even load the game just black screen and nothing works - Its not the only game that doesnt work - and dont know how to get any help about this - tried all the stupid things people have posted but no joy
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL:DR If you want a high fantasy 4x with battles you can play out and a extensive and impactful magic system and can live with the old graphics go for it. What is Age of Wonders 2 in short? Its a turn based 4x game in a fantasy setting with battles taking place on a seperate map reflecting the tiles they started on. The specialty of Age of wonders are the powerful spells ranging from enchanting weapons over summoning creatures too changing the world map to suit your sphere of magic. Graphics:…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#243 out of 558)... it's time for Age of Wonders 2. Unlike its predecessor, Age of Wonders 2 is actually playable on modern operating systems! Shame so many older games have that problem on Steam -- I guess, if nothing else, it helps prop up the market for expensive remasters, huh? What was I doing again? Oh, right. Age of Wonders 2. So it works, great--but is it worth playing? Yes and no. It's very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Forget this one, just play age of wonders shadow magic, that one is epic
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good strategy game and in most ways superior to the original. My one complaint is the loss of the hand-drawn unit cards and accompanying lore. If you enjoy turn-based strategy this is a must-buy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic Fantasy 4x with Heroes and Spells customization.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After having played ge of WOnders I, i decided to buy 2 and three but since i was hugely disappointed in the controls in 1 i was worried but 2 and three really took off from 1 and i was and sitll am very impressed with the improvements and hope that eventually they keep going with this lie.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish Heroes IV and Age of Wonders II had a love child. What a brilliant strategy/RPG could that be. Heroes IV had atrocious combat and really weird ideas about which races and units should be present. Age of Wonders II has fantastic combat and units that make sense both lore-wise and ability-wise. Yet Age of Wonders II feels somewhat lacking compared to the sheer richness of RPG capabilities of Heroes IV. Heroes IV had a map editor that on its own redeemed every terrible decision made in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had trouble getting this to work on Windows 10 at first, but that was fixed by running it in Compatibility mode and going to my Nvidia graphics card settings and using "Add program" to add the Age of wonders II exe from the Steam folder. This is an old game and the graphics and interface and general game design are clunky and difficult to use till you learn how. Once you do though the campaign is pretty fun, if hard at first. Unlike in Age of Wonders III , where heroes can become strong but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I learned valuable life lessons from this game when I was young first, you can magic away all your problems provided you have enough mana second, if problem didn't go away after you magic'ed it, just magic it again third, I'm a wizards*xual and my knees are getting weakened by big enough magic tower and lastly, I'm ready to die on "this-game-is-better-than-heroes-3"-hill
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic is a classic for a reason. This game never loose its magic
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game but has a lot compatibility issues on modern hardware
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games ever
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an old game, with all the caveats that come with that. It feels clunky and occasionally slow, it can have issues with operating, the story is simplistic, etc- but it's charming, and it's a classic. Worth a playthrough at least once, for anyone who either wanted to play it but missed it decades ago, or anyone who really likes strategy and wants to know the roots of the genre today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games of its time. The UI/controls surprisingly take some minor steps back, and the storyline is less linear (less customization/no "choose your own adventure" - campaign/mission selection), but a worthy successor to AoW.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing, and enthralling. Many many hours of enjoyment. Well worth the price!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the defenses are made up and the stats don't matter. Shadow magic is probably superior to this version, except that you won't know why anything is happening because the campaign for this game isn't in that game. The game, is rough, it feels unfinished. I stepped onto a poison plant with a pirate, and the unit that was already standing on it, my hero, took damage from that and died. Then I rage quit. 50 60% it doesn't matter. Just spam tier 1 units, never tech up, unless you are teching up to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy this more than the civ games, but it is hard to have short games. I have enjoyed it so far. the campaign is quite good. Something about this game and its systems being just complex enough draws me in and keeps me playing for hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Since the Ai can see you in the fog of war, there's no way to really come up with tricky strategies. It just becomes a slog.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old school game. I like this more then Heroes of Might and Magic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne" is a worthy continuation of the legendary series that successfully evolves the mechanics of the first part, offering players a deeper and more diverse gameplay experience. The developers have taken into account all the strengths of the original and added many innovations, making the game even more engaging. The story of the second part focuses on the Wizards, who have mastered one of the spheres of magic and rule over a race most compatible with that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game, but not this steam version. It's just unplayable on windows 10. If you have win10 or higher - don't even waste your time and breath buying this broken ♥♥♥♥♥♥ version.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this better than both AOW 1 and Shadow Magic. It is addictive, while Draconians are my fave. Tigrans come second, I also like Frostlings, Archons and Elves. Even Halflings can be fun to play. I am quite biased against the evil races, after all, their units are just aesthetically offensive but I guess that's a good thing. Humans and Dwarves are boring though. I did try Goblins, Orcs and Undead. Out of the 3, the most tolerable is the Undead, at least I could summon Black Angels and Bone…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun experience, though inferior to the next version Shadow Magic, it still has an interesting story mode, and it is curious to see the differences between the more well-refined Shadow Magic and the OG Age of Wonders 2.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game allows you to take your time to assess and plan moves and also, with the save capabilities, to correct for poor plays. I have enjoyed many hour and never played the same game twice, due to the flexibility of the system. Each time I access the game using the same steps, it has some changes from the last time I accessed it that way.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really good classic, if you like turn based strategies. Not that much different to AoW 1, if you liked that, you probably will this too. Campaign is a bit sloppy at places, but its still rather good fun. Apart one of Death scenarios, its not terribly difficult. Also runs fine on today HW and Win 10, at least for me. Cant find much to complain, maybe balance between races could be a bit better and it could all be a bit faster, but thats all I think.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For an old game its epic it works on win 10 no issues well worth a buy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an absolute masterpiece and is truly genious. I've been playing games since I was 6, own over 250 games on steam, game for 8 hours a day atleast and YET, I find this game intellectually challenging me (the 'time played' does not cover my total time, due to not owning the copy on Steam itself). There is no game that is like this one. The mechanics of the game are not simple at first glance by any means. The amount of factors can be very overwhelming, even for expert-gamers.…
