60 of 91 · most liked firstUltra minimalist roguelite that I'm torn on for my score. It deserves a thumbs up b/c it's is definitely an interesting experience. But it also definitely lacking and frustrating in a lot of areas. Pros - Incredible music. - Minimalist style of presentation makes the game more mysterious and intriguing to discover. Afaik, there are literally no words in menus or tooltips in this game. It is all icons. Low-pixel icons at that. - Pretty unique aesthetic regarding the world, monsters, etc.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like all the stuff that I liked about the original and I like the new stuff they added. (As a side note, the reason for the "new" version is the Developer got screwed over by a seedy Publisher.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's one thing to make a game where you have to puzzle out the nuances of gameplay. It's another to make a game where you have to puzzle out how to exit the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The soundtrack is fantastic. Everything else is a hot mess of interesting to great ideas, implemented really, really badly. I keep watching the videos and reading some of the reviews and thinking - should I give this another chance. Sometimes you have to play into a game. And then I spend five seconds with the horrible controls, the complete lack of explanation of anything. The inability to even quit the game, let alone find the control redefinition. For my sins I have 7,000 games on steam.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolute lack of mechanics conveyance to the point that I don't want them to have 5 dollars. Bonkers to see a neat concept completely hamstrung by an unintelligible design philosophy that I had to look up how to quit out without alt+f4. Any amount of attention paid to making the game fun to play would have gone a long way: doors will literally spit you out onto enemies that you cannot avoid for free damage, shooting upward forces you to move sideways so vertical enemies can only be hit by a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's creative and visually surprisingly interesting. But just like the original edition it feels exactly as unpleasant and obnoxious to play. I shouldn't have to look up what everything does, but here we are, a game without any text...it's obnoxious to the extreme.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR - Interesting retro art (if you're into it), cool soundtrack, clunky controls, and obtuse game design makes it a chore to play (at least for me). It's a shame because I liked the concept and the looks but not the gameplay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome looking platformer, but just too hard for me. More reviews at [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/39546715/]Omnivore Gamer, games that are easy to control (for handicapped gamers).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-Button mashing heavily incentived because you can fire like 20x faster than if you just hold the fire button. This is honestly the #1 issue I have with the game, I despise button mashing especially when there is basically no fire cap or restriction. - Player control and movement feels a little clunky - Exploration and enemy design while having a cool visual aesthetic, is kind of bland mechanically. -The game is WAY too abstract, you pretty much need to use a guide to understand even the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuQZiBV3AM0 A mix between the binding of isaac and a cookie clicker, it's a shooting action platformer with roguelike elements as you go from room to room defeating enemies that standing in your way to survive. As you shoot more and kill more, the number counter goes up which you then can spend on upgrades. Is a pretty fun game with nice mechanics like shifting and tumbling while shooting. The visuals looks cool too with its minimalist mainly black and white…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never before a game make me feel so discouraged, lost and helpless and yet want to go through this pain to continue playing. The game is like finding a jigsaw from and ancient civilization that needs to be understood to be solved, and the experience is amazing and completely new for me. Became totally addicted to the previous version for a month, and is great to go for another run with the new content of the doppelganger. A real hidden gem!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can see why people like this game it is quite interesting/unique/challenging but I have played quite a few roguelite's and this has been the most frustrating one so far and I think the only one I gave up on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nongunz is a highly stylised monochromatic roguelite shooter that subverts all expectations from the off. There is a deliberate lack of instructions, or tutorial; everything in the world has to be discovered and deciphered by the player. Your purpose is not clear. The menu seems to be in a language of symbols and weapons and abilities come in the form of cards, with positive and negative attributes. Even quitting the game is obtuse, with a further surprise revealed once you find how to do so.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's one of the most obtuse things I've ever played, but once you understand more or less what's happening it's actually pretty fun and interesting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no clue what is the objective of this game. Everything is so cryptic and mysterious. The menu doesn't make sense. You can't even exit the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't like games that actively fight against you with their abstract design and badly explained mechanics and terrible controls. Why would I want to invest my time into this?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's great! I'm not very good at platformers / roguelikes but I've been absolutely loving this. It's challenging but doesn't frustrate me, patience and planning feel as important as skill. I also really appreciate how minimalist the tutorial and manual are because it leaves a lot for you to learn and discover naturally on your own while still explaining the essentials. That combined with the wonderful music and art style makes for something cool and mysterious that really draws me in.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no idea what I'm doing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I already wrote a short ''review'' on the original game page, an it could be applied to this remaster... Well, this version have two major differences, local coop, and a arena mode, and they are some nice additions to an amazing game, i keep recommending it! Nongünz is a strange game, when you start it you don't really understand anything, and this can become frustrating if you don't take the time to get to know it, but after you overcome that barrier and pass the learning curve, it's an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game's ambiguous nature is quite interesting, It's just not a roguelike that will really hook you. You have no idea what the passive upgrades do (mostly just stat increases) and you get one head or gun per floor which can spice things up but overall the combat is just boring with sometimes very poorly designed rooms. Nongunz is not bad but today, you have so many roguelikes competing for your time and money that I really think you should be better off looking elsewhere.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition released recently, and I wanted to post a positive review about it. I dont actually have much more to say other than I feel like this version is more fine tuned than the original in a few different ways. The game seems at least a little bit more accessible, even if this new version does have a bit more bugs than the original release. The things id like to point out specifically in why I like the game are mostly style choices, sound and visual design seemed dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I wrote this review for the original version and received the update for free (thank you devs). Since this is just an improvement on the original I figured I would just transcribe my old review to here. A very strange game. It's a really solid run and gun shooter with a few really weird choices that depending on how you like your games could either be pros or cons. It controls well and the combat feels good, the movement is a little weird cause your dodge is a long roll that is a little…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One bullet = one prayer. PS. It's not a reviev. It's more like a guide.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I checked the steam charts for this a while ago and it turns out that I am quite literally the *only* person still playing this. Regardless I can confidently recommend it but only if you're into games that are demanding both mechanically and mentally. One very important note: Do not look at any guides.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great ideas, awful game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game seems good but bad menus and intro exit screen ruin what should be some simple options, screen shake on this is painful and im not going thru the cryptic menus to find how to make it play nice, seems like i spent too long on it for a refund, could be good if it was a bit less pretentious
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly I like this game quite a lot despite it not being very long or having more replayability. This very cryptic and minimalistic rogue-lite just sends you in after a tutorial only telling you the controls, it barely tells you anything or give you information about what you have to do or about the features, for several this was a turn-off but for me it's what got me interested by having to find out everything in your own, like the game has cards with icons of power ups but doesn't tell you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR This game is a clicker game disguised as a roguelike, and the "Tutorial" is a bunch of pictographs that make sense, but feel obtuse in what the game is trying to convey. I wish some of the mechanics it used were better implemented to serve the actual gameplay rather than the metagame. Themes are on point and soundtrack slaps tho. Longer review coming at some point because Steam ate my draft of 25+ sentences and I'm pissed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The platform shooter aspect is great, as is your ability to abort a run without dying. The art and music are mediocre. The fact that the game is made to be deliberately obtuse ruins the experience. Not only are the mechanics not explained, aside from a book that looks like a 6-year-old's scribbles, but it feels like things were deliberately made over-complicated just so there'd be more to not explain. Letting us figure things out is great, but when I can't even tell what the stats - which are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you dont like this game, that's the point. This game is intentionally confusing, brutal and vague.(like cruelty squad but more subtle). Push through it and you'lll find a gem that sticks. Is the game's movement weird? Yes. Can it be so ridiculously fun? HELL YES. There's alot I can say but i will only say this: Trust me, it gets GOOD.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has a nice style and soundtrack but tries too hard to be smart and minimalist and as someone mentioned in the discussions "Figuring things out for yourself is only fun and interesting if the mechanics are intuitive. It's not fun to play "guess what the dev is " sums up the experience with Nongunz. And I'm not trying to sound like a hater or anything, but when you can't even figure out what the fricking PAUSE MENU does, you know they did some very poor design choices. At least the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I received a key for this game from a friend, so i did what anyone who got a key would do, I redeemed/activated it. at first I was a little skeptical of the game because it didn't really tell me much about it. it told me some basic controls like how to move, dodge, slide, and shoot, as well as how to use an ability (if applicable). but as I played the game, I was able to find strategies that could help me avoid getting damaged, as well as being able to learn what each enemy could and couldn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i hate the menu system so much that i don't even want to play the game any further. I'm sure if i gave the game longer it could be good, 3/10 Lemons
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition is a console ported 2D retro pixel shooter/puzzle platformer built with the Unity engine. While the name doppelganger will remind people unpleasantly of how many Unity asset store packs get copied and sold as games on Steam, it seems in this case Nongunz is a sincere attempt at making a video game, so I'll review it as such. PC gamers will immediately be insulted by prompts for console peasant childrens toy game controllers, despite the game being on PC. That's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition, developed by Brainwash Gang and published by Digerati, is a roguelite action-platformer that deliberately positions itself at the edge of accessibility, offering an experience that is as cryptic as it is mechanically engaging. From the moment it begins, the game provides almost no guidance, dropping players into a stark, monochrome world where understanding must be earned through trial, error, and careful observation. This design philosophy defines the entire…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of those take-it-or-leave-it games that has a lot of good qualities but doesn't quite cross the threshold into standing out. The original version of this came out 8 or 9 years ago and I remember it being viewed positively, I liked it too but didn't stick with it much. The updated Doppelganger edition was made free to people who owned the original and I downloaded that since it seemed good as a Steam Deck game. It is in fact a good Steam Deck game. Some of the systems are a mixed bag. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completely esoteric roguelike with idle mechanics mixed in there. Worth dabbling in for the presentation and unique system combination, but seriously confusing without a guide.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I desperately wanted to like that game, but it was absolutely impenetrable for me. It felt like I'd missed seven tutorials and every time I even tried to understand what was going on I would explode on the spot. Thus I can only conclude that Nongunz speedrunners are actual warlocks.
unlabelledView post →Pretty crazy. Puzzler (of a sort) + idle game + roguelike. Cool style. A bit too hard for the payoff. Check it out!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are what got me to buy it. Played for 20 minutes and I feel dissapointed. The game doesn't tell you anything on how to play it and what things do, you need to understand it on your own. Platforming is not satisfying and you can't aim. Game for me feels like missed potenial. Shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely unique game, it's a very interesting roguelite that doesn't hold your hand at all, and a lot of stuff is left for the player to find out (mechanics, what the stats symbols mean, *how to quit the game* (lol)). The mystery, atmosphere and obscure mechanics are what drew me in to keep playing it (I loved the tutorials with just drawings and barely any text, made learning how to play interesting and somewhat of an added challenge to the game), the soundtrack is phenomenal and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First time I ever wrote a negative review on steam this game is simply not fun, and the fact you can't shoot upwards or downwards feel more like your character is somehow broken, more than a real fun game mechanics. honorable mention to the WORST FIRST LEVEL OF AN ARENA I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE. try something else, like black future '88, hundred million times better

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nongünz got great aesthetic with roguelike elements, meaning it's always going to feel fresh! The higher your combo is, the more score you'll accumulate to purchase all sorts of things. You may stumble upon caged worshippers which would help raise your score over time. And there are windows which would allow you to exit the castle if the situation looks grim to come back and fight once more! It's a little difficult to figure out the meaning of certain cards, but once you get the hang of it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is absolutely one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. There's just nothing good about it. I tried to give it a shot, but there's nothing new (that's good) in this game. Controls are ♥♥♥♥. Visual clarity is ♥♥♥♥. Ninety percent of the rooms are just projectile spam in a game with the worst dodges ever made. The upgrades are not very clear, so they can't be that interesting. What cool ♥♥♥♥ can you describe in two symbols? I have no idea what the meta progress is, despite this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the most underrated games ever. Its "hardness" makes it unappreciable for casual players, but its being initially mysterious and without indications (in the very first version there were not even illustrated instructions) makes it mentally stimulating. Visually it is a pearl in its essentiality. If you are looking for a rogue with a slower and more studied pace, this game could surprise you!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its not confusing, you just don't understand it yet.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →seems like it could be fun but with the lack of guidance or tutorials, and levels seeming like they're designed to be tedious, not challenging, I'm having a hard time recommending this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried to give this game a chance. it hasn't left a good impression on me once in 3 times opening it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible game. Great aesthetic, seemed promising, sucked me in to buy, but the game is just plain horrible. I had high hopes, looked so cool...felt cool for about 1 minute...then I had to actually play the game. Just awful. I cannot imagine what kind of masochist this game was made for. Controls are all over the place, but you can only shoot in the direction you are facing, left or right. ONLY, but most of the enemies come at you from above. There is a button that you can press for some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SUGGESTION FOR DEVS In case if there's a sequel or a similar game from the developer, I'd like to share my opinion on how gameplay could be improved in this very good, but still flawed game. Basically, there's one fatal flaw that ruins the whole experience - grinding. The flow of the game is very unbalanced. You can't just pick up the controller and do a run. First you have to grind. For weapons, skulls, cards, anything. Which means you can't just have 2 consecutive runs one after another,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →yeah, no thanks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game doesnt explain anything, im completely lost, ive got 250 hours in rogue legacy 2, ive coompleted enter the gungeon entirely, beating all bosses even the litch, but im not about to invest 1-2 hours into a game that doesnt even give me 5 minutes upon bootup to be intruiged, let alone get 'hooked' by having to whatching youtube tutorials to understand anything....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →By far one of the strangest roguelikes I've played. It refuses to hold your hand, leaving you to ascertain just what each symbol means as opposed to spelling everything out. Very interesting title, solid sound design. The screenshake is absolutely too much and I can't find the options to stop it, but it is what it is.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought it for the acheivements so i used Cheat Engine to get them. Awesome art design and ambience. Terrible gameplay that has you feeling constantly underpowered and makes the game a chore. But on the flipside i can spell my name on my steam profile for 10 dollars. Props to the creators for creating such a unique experience. Next time make the game a little better to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, got immediately sucked into this game and I really love it, at first yes i was pretty confused but the controls are simple enough and was able to get the hang of it really quickly, I really recommend this game to anyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Explains nothing, when you quit you re thrust into a bedroom as some dude. Its a confusing and weird roguelike shooter where you battle through floors and rescue skeleton priest and gather cards. You can burn cards to heal yourself, chest hurt you when you open them but by a percentage of your total health, so when at low health, you want to always open chest even just to burn the cards. You can jump out the window in a middle of a run to stockpile whatever cards you've gathered in the crypt.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unique game, challenging but satisfying, quite some replay value and pretty fun :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only played for 15 minutes, but I'm giving a negative review out of principle. I don't have anything to say about the gameplay, because I stopped playing due to how ridiculously abstruse and painful to navigate the menu is. Seriously, just put a standard ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ menu in the game that a normal person would use.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, what did y'all do to the camera? I don't need horizontal camera movement in this game, I just need a camera that doesn't drift when I walk and jerk in random directions literally every time I shoot. It wasn't like this at all in the original game.
