Moss Developer Polyarc Closes. The development studio behind beloved VR character Quill in the Moss VR games is shuttering. A post to LinkedIn shares a spreadsheet with dozens of names now seeking jobs. In July, Polyarc released a flatscreen version of Moss called Moss: The Forgotten Relic to very positive ratings on Steam. This news is breaking

More developers need to approach VR this way. Classic platformer gameplay re-imagined from an enhanced and immersive perspective, instead of derivative low-effort first-person VR slop.

!!!!YOU CAN PET AND HIGH-FIVE THE MOUSE!!!! ...any way.. You play as a brave and very adventurous mouse named Quill who stumbles across a magical item. This item leads her on a journey to prove her worth as the next successor while also needing to rescue her uncle. The game is full of puzzles and mazes that you must help her complete in order for her to move forward. Even the combat can be a bit of a strategy puzzle in order to not get overwhelmed by the amount of bugs attacking you. Some you…

Thank you for playing? Thank you for making this game! I saw a fragment of Moss years ago, and it immediately caught my attention - even before I had a VR headset. When I finally started the game for the first time, I was already in awe. The way the story draws you in creates a deep sense of immersion. The narration deserves my highest respect, as it elevates the experience even further. All the voices are performed by a single voice actress, and she did an absolutely amazing job. The main…

Aside from the game being both fun and adorable, I thought I'd mention the fact that, when you launch it, it immediately loads back right into the same spot you quit it in, instead of giving you 3 minutes of unskippable intros. That alone would make this game be worth praising.

I gave this game up. After grinding about an hour on the crab boss in the Abandoned City, when I finally had him (by simply spamming the sword button 🤦‍♂), I took the wrong door from the toad hub because the game does not show you where to go to progress. So when I wound up in the same boss fight for a second time, I had no intentions of going through all that trouble again and exited. Which resulted in the game not saving my progress of already having defeated this boss. This is what happens…

I first played a bit of this game at a friends house on his Quest 2, and I was blown away by the world setting as well as falling in love with Quill. So when I got my Quest 3 this was the first thing I knew I needed to play. I was pleased to see the developers also added new features like the 'skip combat' mode too (so you don't have to be frustrated with a combat if it gets too difficult - although I don't personally find them too bad, but my son and wife got a little frustrated, so this…

This VR game holds up surprisingly well for being released in 2018. The art style and environments are beautiful. The puzzles and combat incorporate motion and controller inputs in a very natural way. Within my first hour, I really felt like I was working together with the mouse character. The incorporation of a VR PoV into the platformer experience allows for more complex 3D environments & sneakier places to hide collectibles. (Look around for those scrolls! They might not be visible from a…

I just need to remember, the mouse's name is Quill... Quill... Link is not called Zelda, Samus is not called Metroid, Quill is not called Moss. Okay, so I've been dabbling into VR, (Of course if I'd known what Meta was going to do a few days later, I wouldn't have bought their headset.) and I've been hooked to the point where I have to keep setting a 30 minute timer just to look after myself. When you think about what would make a good VR game, a puzzle platformer probably isn't the first…

It was a really nice game that took all your available space in the vr world. Instead of adding dizzying motion and movements mechanics, you simply are a big entity in a large playground where you can look around, move in your real world zone and explore the virtual map and help Quill (the mouse and main character of the game) complete her quest! This game was Absolutely fantastic!

Moss has very positive first impression. The style and theme is very good, and the idea of helping small mouse travel trough storybook locations sounds great. The problem with this game is, that past the first impression - it's just dull. Quill(the mouse) moves pretty slowly, everything happens like it's in slow motion (I had game running at 120FPS), as if it was being dragged trough a mud. The controls of Quill feel off. The jumps feel pretty bad, and are unprecise. They are also hard to…

The Mouse and the enchanted world (Our) "Moss" is one of those games that was elevated to the status of legends only because the legends were very necessary to the world, and it doesn't matter that our charming mouse is ready for such a great title, she still gets it both in the history of the game and in in our real world, going against the sound and rigorous assessment of video game art. "Moss" is an action platformer with puzzles, in which we fight with very simple enemies, of which there…

You guide the cute mouse helping her through a couple of puzzles The mouse is cute, the scenery and ambiance is top notch The gameplay is a zelda like platformer with some puzzle elements thrown in The VR aspect is pretty well done, you'll mostly be sitting and occasionally reach into the scene to help the mouse or pull things in place, hold mobs for her to beat down Overall it's a get it for me. You might do it at a discount though, I'm glad I did. It is short, with no real…

Absolutely would recommend, in fact can't recommend it enough. Moss isn't the longest game, but I will absolutely play through again to go get things I missed the first time around. Absolutely loved my time with Moss, even going so far as to get all the achievements. If you're looking for a great showcase for VR that doesn't go crazy with motion sickness inducing movement or overly complicated controls, this is it. Played it on a PSVR2 with the PC adapter and it worked perfectly with no tinkering.

8/10 - This along with Moss II are my strong recommendations for first-time VR users to get. Both games can be played within 10 hours. And, there is barely any activity/action in the game that can cause motion sickness. So they are great games to play while your "VR legs" have not developed yet. Story - 7/10 Gameplay - 8/10 Graphics - 8/10 Artstyle 9/10 Sound - 8/10

This game is short, simple and adorable as a mouse. What it lacks in volume in makes up for in heart. The animations, sound design, voice acting, and presentation are all perfect. Quill the mouse doesn't say a word and somehow has more personality than half of the protagonists of every game ever made. My only beef is that dodging should have its own dedicated button and level design doesn't really take full advantage of VR--this could just as easily be a flat screen platforming game.…

Yes, This is a MUST play for VR. I also pondered if this perspective was something that required VR in any way. After playing I can say for certain that Virtual Reality added more than I could understand. For a character so small the feels were 1000x bigger. The interaction and design of Quill immediately causes a connection, making the player feel like Quill is someone they have know since birth. This really shows that even this a god like POV Virtual Reality is the most immersive story…

Works for WMR with some caveats. I played on a Samsung Odyssey+, and found down-left movement inputs to be very sticky. There is a steam community controller binding that fixes this common issue for WMR users. This game is a clever combination of classic puzzle platforming that integrates your ability to interact in VR. One of the more clever games to take full advantage of the medium. The story is simple, but the presentation is quite charming. The set pieces and variety of environments…

I dunno, it looks awesome and runs butterysmooth but I just cannot get jiggly with the POV. Yes, you're supposed to be some kind of god and stuff but I think VR is made to really be inside the action and not a stalker watching it from 25m away. I'm pretty sure they actually do interact with the fact that someone helps the mouse but I didn't play as far. But I also see that there was a lot of love put into it, it's just really not for me.

Will edit my review after completion, but this game is already a VR must-have. The game presentation is very appealing, immersing you as a Reader to Quill's story in a way that seems so natural as you follow her combat and help her with puzzles. The love that went into this game is clear, with a story taking me back to being young and reading the Tale of Desperaux, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and all the like. POST COMPLETION EDIT: Fantastic game. I'm glad to have been a Reader in this story.

Rather short, but sweet, which seems to be the norm for VR games from this time period. I particularly enjoy the attention to detail that was paid to animating Quill's body language - the way she shares in your relief after a tough battle in particular is very rewarding. It being a seated game means you can play it in longer sessions than other VR games. It also does a good job at positioning the scenery such that you never spend too long looking down, so it doesn't strain your neck even if…

Moss is playable for people with motion sickness inside a VR headset. Your view is from above and doesn't move, except for when you physically do too. Whenever you finish a level / leave an area your vision blacksout and pops back up. Took me roughly 3h to finish a non 100% playthrough. Get in a good sale.

One issue I have with VR is that it takes a lot of diligence to immerse yourself. Whether it be janky first-person mechanics or poor writing, little aspects like these make it hard to truly be immersed. What I found immediately appealing about Moss is how easy it was to immerse myself in its world. I may be looking down upon these levels in 3rd person, controlling Quill as any other 3D platformer, but because the world sets up my role as the player - the "reader" - as a living, interactable…
