When we made our systemic game MirrorMoon EP about the manipulation of systems, the play of contingency, and the brokenness of machines, you commented, “Oh, so experimental games mean Portal guns now?” It traumatised us so much we’ve been making games exclusively about Italian politics ever since

Saturnalia - which Eurogamer contributor Simon Parkin called a "horrible nightmare in all the right ways" in his Recommended review last year - whisks players away…

From a gameplay perspective, it was often uncomfortable, unfriendly, and at times boring, confusing, and difficult. However, the vast universe, filled with stunning sights, was as beautiful as a work of art. Maybe that's just what being an astronaut is all about—enduring these challenges to behold the profound beauty of the cosmos. 우주비행사가 된 기분이야.

An experiment that is interesting and should be analyzed and talked about... but not for its quality of execution. The game offers no instructions and challenges you to learn to navigate space as well as the planets surrounding you. Even the UI is a puzzle to learn. Conquering this initial puzzle feels good. However, once you understand the game's formula, the deliberately opaque design becomes the enemy. Any breadcrumbs you find could be a new puzzle (though there are only a handful of…

MirrorMoon EP is a pensive abstract puzzle game about spatial reasoning. Side A is a short but enjoyable moon, Side B is an endless series of procedurally generated moons. This game tries to communicate as little as possible, on the theory that the fun is in experimenting and figuring it out for yourself. Unfortunately, there are several big brain ideas here that are a bit too much to communicate nonverbally, and I had to figure out by sifting through the discussion forums. For instance, my…

I greatly enjoyed The Witness, Myst, Fez, and other games where you had to figure out everything for yourself. This one though? This game is an overintellectual mess. It practically screams "Ask me what it means! Ask me what it means!" Stay as far away from this game as possible!

Part of the fun is that the Game Interface/Controls are not explained and nor are the objectives. Haha, great fun. Right? Actually it is. But while that is intriguing for awhile, once I gained a a grip on the game and what I should be trying to do, there is a huge gap between there and then going on to complete the game. Without spoiling anything, the wider universe is randomly generated and it immediately becomes a problem. So you'll just have to keep mashing buttons going to random worlds to…

MirrorMoon EP looks intriguing at first, but it quickly becomes frustrating and aimless. The lack of clear direction makes exploration feel more like wandering without purpose than discovery. Controls and mechanics aren’t explained well, which just adds to the confusion. It might appeal to a very specific audience, but it wasn’t for me at all.

There is a big difference between having some mystery to your game and just being obtuse, and unfortunately this game is just that, obtuse. It's pretty much impossible to even figure out what the puzzle is to begin with, much less figure out how to solve it, it's a game that pretty much requires a walkthrough in order to make any sense of it and frankly I don't have the time or energy to play a game where from start to finish I have to say "ok, so now what do I do?". This isn't artsy or clever…

Reading other reviews suggests that there's some kind of art piece hidden here, but I sure as hell can't see it. All I see is a field of planets already named by other players, of which visiting any results in a "puzzle" that requires you to find the exit off the planet, while under the influence of a selection of a few random handicaps and tools - the pool of which seems to be incredibly small - to try and make each world different. But what's always the same is that navigation is painful,…

MirrorMoon EP is the result of a fusion between a space exploration game, a puzzle game and an atmospheric game (yes, it’s a three-way fusion). The game has a stunning visual style; it’s both minimalist and beautiful, a real treat for the eyes. I don’t have much more to say about the game; it offers no tutorial, no clues as to what to do, and I find the puzzles difficult and not very intuitive, so I got really frustrated after a few minutes because I couldn’t make head nor tail of it. But…

One of the most engaging puzzle games I've played in a while, and it IS a puzzle game. I can’t fully review the game without somewhat spoiling the most powerful idea behind it, but I will avoid any specific spoilers. MirrorMoon EP was on of the few games that had me "deciphering the language". At points I actually pulled out photoshop and some screenshots to make myself a sort of map. Aside from the mechanics of the game, the art is beautiful and the soundscape is mesmerizing and fits in…

The more I think about MirrorMoon EP, the harder it is to remember what I liked about it. Pretty much every major aspect of the game is broken: it's an "artsy" game that restricts your ability to look around, it's an exploration game where you spend most of your time waiting around until the ship reaches its next destination, and it's a puzzle game that involves wandering around from point A until you find point B. It also has some sort of story, I think? By far the most frustrating aspect of…

I didn't get it. So the initial menu has zero explanation and took ages to work out how to even start the game. So I start the game, You shoot lasers at a moon which is also the planet you are on, which you use to hit markers to progress and also to navigate. So slowely you upgrade your gun and then....you are done? And you find yourself back on your ship, and you get to do it all over again on a new planet and sometimes the mechanics change a bit. I dunno. Its got a neat style and I admire it…

I should first explain what this game is not: it isn't a space exploration game in the vein of Noctis IV, a deep puzzler, or a game with a cohesive thought-provoking narrative. What it is ends up being is slightly hard to define, and that's likely why I find it so exceptional. It creates a sense of isolation and furthermore a comfort in that isolation that I have not found in any other game. If your approach to this game is minimize the window while I wait for the next tidbit of gameplay, then…

This definitely isn’t my kind of game, so I didn’t enjoy my time with it. Even objectively, I just don’t think it’s a good game. I’ll start with my biggest dislike: the controls. They’re clunky and frustrating, and I think that if this game had better controls and was optimised for both keyboard and controller, it would have improved the experience tenfold. One major…

No direction. No explanations of any kind. What I am meant to do? What is my overall goal? What do all the buttons mean? The controls are also quite whacky, no mouse look. I managed to complete the first planet which I think acts as a tutorial, but after that I have no idea what I am supposed to do. Some of the other planets I landed on were seemingly unable to be completed. What is even the point of just completing "randomly generated" planets with like 2 puzzle elements moved about and…

I tried to enjoy this and just couldn't figure it out. Being obtuse purely for the sake of being obtuse isn't particularly fun for me. The screenshots look cool and the design was intriguing but I wasn't motivated enough to learn the very strange game play systems. The controls felt awful and it didn't feel like anything was "happening" as I went about the first hour or so of just wandering.

When I started writing this review, I was on the fence about whether to recommend it or not. After reading my own thoughts on the game, I realized they were mostly negative. I will say that the game did keep me playing for 10 hours (enough for me to finish it and all achievements), and I don't regret purchasing it for $10. This game is about finding how to play the game. And that pretty much sums it up. You start off on a planet and you know how to move with WASD and thats all the game tells you. You can't move your viewpoint with the mouse and you can't strafe. Why? because "exploration" There is no tutorial except people say that there is one. MirrorMoon EP is an ancient game from 2013. It's a whopping 10 years old at the time of this review. The game, at least, is an almost unique premise, with gameplay very much like an incredibly shallow No Man's Sky, but without graphics, crafting, advanced procedural generation, or any of the rest of that compelling stuff that made NMS successful. Or maybe this is a bit more like Elite, but without trading, with a walking sim slapped on top. The controls and gameplay are deliberately obtuse…

This game has essentially three layers that I can tell, and I really like the first two. What drags this experience down for me is the third layer and why I don't recommend it. Let's begin. So there is basically no story. You have a nebulous objective. When you begin a game you will select a "season" - if you're new you should pick the most recent season as it's the one with the lowest number of previously explored mechanics. If you pick an old season there won't be much for you to do. You…

If stumbling around in the dark with no explanations, solving the same puzzle over and over while the game does its best to obscure the controls sounds like fun to you, this might be your game. Side A has a breadcrumb of a story, but even with the game deliberately getting in your way, it only takes about 20 minutes to figure out the puzzle, and the story is never seen again. Side B seems to just be subsets of the puzzle you solved in Side A, but with no story. Achievements seem to indicate…

Mirrormoon EP is a cryptic puzzle game explaining nothing to the player. You have to figure out everything by yourself. If you are into these kind of games, it offers you a unique experience of space exploration. Trial and error will get you finally to the goal. I expect 'artistic' games to have more artistry in them. Instead I was subjected to minimalist noise music (which admittedly fit the atmosphere) and a barren waste of a play-environment with terrible controls and no sense of purpose or direction. "Blind Stumbling - The Game" is not really my idea of fun. The novelty of the experience fades once the method is discovered, leaving only a grind of wandering in an uninteresting space until hidden objectives are completed (which amount to 'go to x…

The first part is really interesting, the aesthetics are really cool, the puzzles are mind bending and the atmosphere is intriguing; a really good exploratory, immersive experience. But the "second part", when the game world "opens up", is too obscure, too random, too cryptic and it turned out boring for my taste. It's not a game for everyone. Also, the controls and the UI are unconventional, so that can also be a turn down.

I play LOADS of indie games, a lot of which I like, but this is just inexcusable. I'm a fan of very artistic puzzle games so I went into this with an open mind. It's a shame then that it immediately revealed itself to be obtuse and inscrutable. I literally couldn't figure out what to do in the first puzzle of the game and it didn't take long for me to lose interest in screwing around with the few things that seemed interactable. If No Man's Sky was a good game and came out 10 years ago. This one was ahead of its time, actual banger, very confusing at the beginning, but a very nice environment, gameplay and control system once you get the hang of all the mechanics and start travelling from planet to planet. A very relaxing game, but not for everyone, if you didn't like Death Stranding is highly probably you will dislike this game, but if you like space and planets who knows, give it a shot.

You can go into it ready to be confused and not expecting to have your hand held, like I did, and still not be satisfied. Side A really is cool, but to me it suggested things about Side B that ended up being mostly incorrect. I wanted to let the game speak for itself, so I didn't look at reviews or guides until after I'd spent a long time on Side B. I made a solid effort to "finish"…

This is definitely going to be in the category of "love it" or "hate it" for most people. This is a game about figuring out what the game is, how the game works and then applying it.
