Pretty interesting little 2D platformer where you can learn a thing or two about the history of typography. I wouldn't say it's flawless, it has some annoying bits but overall it's alright.

If a Typewriter brings words to life, Type:Rider goes even further, letting you dive into the fascinating history and evolution of typography. It's a journey through the world of letters. It’s more like an educational game, though.

If you are into the type of games that makes you feel like reading through Wikipedia most of the time than doing anything gaming related.. If you are into a game that is more on the educational side, a game where you don't feel guilty like you have wasted your time playing it, at the end of the day.. Well, this might be something for you! It is a platform game (A cranky one at that!).. But ironically enough, that is only a "platform", a facade for the real purpose, the wiki-like reads! It is…

A short platformer based on fonts and their history. I have to admit, from a creative/artistic point of view it’s definitely visually interesting and unique, but based on the platforming experience it might probably be kind of lacking for a lot of people. Controls are often unresponsive (like it needs some time before the dots get into rolling), and afterwards jumps are truly all over the place due to the varying momentum. With the results mostly being random, which means dying a lot, so if…

I’ll say right away that I liked the basic game play and concept of Type: Rider. I found the platforming and puzzle aspects to be overall pretty good and enjoyable. I did find the dots to be annoying to control and maneuver at times but I was able to to get through the levels. The special level after the ending is terrible though in my opinion. While the levels before all have checkpoints at different points the special level has none at all and any mistakes mean starting the level from…

I really liked this game. I'm not usually one for learning as I play, but the nice thing is most of the learning is background and avoidable if you hate to read and just want a good platformer. The movement and controls are smooth and the style is nice and charming. The gameplay is simple. Not too challenging, but still a nice quick play and I feel like the price is worth a good swift platformer.

I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…

First of all very unusual game. You don't actually type in this one as this is a platformer. Smart play on the words in the title as word typewriter comes to mind. At first glance you might think the game is boring but it's not. The basic idea of the game is educating player in history of fonts, alphabet and characters, not overwhelming with excessive reading or craming the knowledge. Puzzle elements are present often but not troublesome. Music is great and the game looks unique. What else...…

I was going through my backlog, and then I stumbled upon this gem. The platforming and gaming portion of this title is good and fair (ampersand collect for the over achievers). The good stuff is in an enjoyable well told history of typography, from pic to CAPS to sMol to art to print press to ... ... Very enjoyable read with some light platform puzzle interludes. If your only after the cheevo's then you can skip the good stuff and get them quick I guess!

I really wanted to like this game, since I was getting interested in typography. Unfortunately, my experience with it was frustrating. + Visuals. + Music. - There's no 1920×1080 resolution. - Game doesn't save any settings. I wish I could recommend this, it comes close, but there are just a few too many frustrations for it to be a satisfying experience. The unsatisfying platforming control is the chief offender here. Too many dangerous sections are made unnecessarily tricky by the hard-to-control nature of the character, and dying over and over until you seemingly randomly hit a bounce in just the right spot is highly frustrating. Also, for a game about typography, printing and publishing, the English…

As soon as I launched the game the ARTE logo caught my eye, instantly reminding me of the TV channel and the early music videos I loved watching on YouTube. However, this game didn’t meet my expectations. It’s a simple, plain and unpolished game where you control two chained balls ":" to move from the left side of the map to the right. The gameplay feels dry, with little excitement beyond occasional jumps. While the backgrounds offer historical facts and figures, they lack sufficient context.…

A different way of learning history with an intersting physical engine behind. Learning is not a must when playing a video game, but Type:Rider does teach the player who wants to learn about the history of typography in a wise manner. It is an innovative game, perfect in artistic terms (levels are carefully designed in each case), but their repetitive game mechanics would push most of players to dislike the game after a couple of chapters. For a museum piece about typography, this game is incredibly in-depth. Gameplay-wise, the premise is simple: you take control of an umlaut and navigate terrain across the evolving time periods of fonts. Simple? NO. Having already cleared the game on mobile before I thought this would retain the same experience. WRONG. The movement system is shoddy, and for a platformer I'd expect the movement to be less janky. This was certainly an unconventional approach to teaching. Indeed, this 2D silhouette platformer is about the history of typography, from the very beginnings of writing to how it's used today. Fascinating subject, mediocre gameplay. It's like playing QWOP, except it's a platformer. I can't stress enough how important it is for a platformer to have extremely responsive controls. There is somewhat some skill involved: you have to learn how to master jumping at the right moment, rotation of the two circles etc. It's just that most people wouldn't really want to put in the effort to learn the mechanics for a 3h game. A truly miserable experience. I have to admit that platformers are far from my favorite type of game, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Have you ever had the misfortune of playing a physics-based platformer? This is one of those. Usually the problems which arise from using a physics engine are mitigated by having an easy to steer hero. This game has the opposite. The hero (a double dot) frequently gets in the way of where you are trying to move, and as with all physics platformers…

This is one of the game I like to say has "sloppy physics" where the controls feel like weight of what you are controlling isn't the same so being able to keep track of the inertia and momentum can make this otherwise beautiful game more annoying than fun.
