The dreaded "C++ Runtime Error!" crash could be fixed via a Large Address Aware patcher, but Steam won't allow you to patch the game's launcher.exe. It's an unfortunate situation. However, it's not all bad news. The GOG version is DRM-free and so it *can* be fixed with a Large Address Aware patcher. So my recommendation is to go…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a flawed gem. Great visuals, atmosphere, story, sounds and music but it can get a bit difficult at places, and can suffer from the odd bug. But beyond that its a refreshing mix of a RPG and RTS, which immerses you with its quests. Give this game a go if you're an RTS fan who likes RPGs. However I recommend this game with its DLC, over its sequel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Expecting a Summer Sale - Paradox Interactive increased base prices for most if not all their games. Anything morally and ethically wrong with it? Vote with your Money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is a game that...while nostalgic and a fun retro strategy rpg is sadly bugged. crashes will happen, and are sadly frequent. buy it on GoG as there you can edit files and implement the fix
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hi, for those of you who love the first King Arthur game (King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame) as much as I do, I made a short tutorial video about how you can play it on the current systems because it is basically unplayable in default due to unending cycle of crashes. With this solution, it works quite well. I hope it might help you. 😉 https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VW-x3h5XgeLpmknB-oDuOAtWZqVAZ5mkC9NK8dG9z9w/edit?usp=sharing
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A deep and challenging strategy roleplaying game, King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame pulled me into it like its Total War cousins never could. The story is engaging, the combat is exciting and fun, and the art direction really brings the Arthurian Legend to life. As a huge fan of the legend itself, this game is finally a piece of modern media that does it justice. The story is a unique retelling of the Arthurian Legend. There are many core pieces that make up the tales and this game ties…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you liked the recent King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, then this original game will absolutely be something you enjoy — trust me. But with that said: The game never received the proper post‑DLC patch support it needed to run well. If it had, I would be screaming my lungs out recommending it to everyone. It’s basically Total War with a King Arthur flavour, and that’s a good thing. This was one of my favourite games back in the day (just look at my playtime). But it didn’t take long before the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still better than Total War: Warhammer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shame to give this game a negative review, as its otherwise a solid 8/10. But frequent, basically unfixable, crashing on modern systems has left this older title basically unplayable. Supposedly the GOG version is more stable, but that has sadly never come over to Steam. Valve ought to make it a priority to either fix or remove from the store games that don't work. What this game is, though, is Warhammer: Total War-Bretonnia edition. You play as King Arthur in a Total War style campaign…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game that needs a remaster. Impossible to play on modern systems
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great idea for setting the game in Arhturian legend. nice design and music. pretty strategic map. but the game is crippled in it's essense and I cannot recommend it. Fighting battles are poor, imbalance and have nothing in compare to total war series, which this game try to be. I can destroy everything with magic and is enormously frustrating when enemy kill your experience veteran troops with fireball and storm. very little progress since the first game. I would like to like this game, but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the age before Total War Warhammer, the gamers yearning for a Total War like game but Fantasy. Their cry had been answered by King Arthur - The Role-Playing Wargame. Despite all the janks that one could expected from a European game. It did a good job of what it set out to do.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3 Things you need to know about this game: 1) It's not Total War. Total War tactics won't generally transfer over. 2) Magic and archers rule the battlefield. 3) Not all unit types are created equal. Pikemen don't really do much, even against cavalry : / Let's start with the Tl;dr Good: Good story RPG elements are well implemented Battlefield mechanics are solid (just not as polished as TW) Magic system is fun Plenty of units to choose from Religion and morality alignments If attacking, you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great Total War clone in a fantasy setting with some interesting mechanics, like magic and RPG elements. A great game for fans of the older Total War games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY. The game's unplayable on modern hardware and Windows 10/11. During the tutorial battle it hangs for me, I have an AMD GPU, that apparently also causes problems. This is criminal and the developers should be forced to either patch the game or remove it from Steam entirely, possibly refunding anyone who was only able to play the game for 5 minutes like I did before it hanged and then hanged again on further tries.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game crashes with C+ runtime error. That issue is well documented and there's no fix to it. It happens on various different computers. Although the game got an autosave-feature, it's of no use since the crashes occur when you've finished a battle and the game tries to load back into the campaign map. Autosaves only happen right before a battle begins. So, yes, this means that you may have won an epic battle by the skin of your teeth after an hour of nerve-wracking micromanage combat only to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice little Total War like game. Reminds me a lot of the first warhammer games (shadow of the horned rat) Sadly unplayable due to frequent runtime error crashes... (known problem persisiting for years)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place.” ~King Arthur What's cool about King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame is that it's its makers' dream project. Let's get back to the late 2000s for a moment. The initial craze that started with Braveheart (yes, it was a movie-based game that started it all; deal with it) and was popularized in the legendary Shōgun: Total War was pretty much over. It wasn't like such games stopped appearing—exactly the opposite. What I'm trying to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a great game, but it's unplayable on modern pc. It has graphic problems and runtime errors. I spent hours online searching for solutions and test them all: some of them improved slightly the situation, but too many problems remain. I cannot understand how it is still available for buying!!!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY. The game is broken at the highest settings. It will only use 2GB of RAM and as soon as it goes over it, it'll crash to desktop. Google "king arthur battle crash" - it's well documented. There is a fix for it, but it won't work with Steam version, 'cause Steam sucks at nearly everything. Get cheaper gog version instead. It might not crash for you in your first 2 hours of playtime, so you won't be able to refund it when it starts crashing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow. Had not expected the hours played to be 300ish, but it figures. I absolutely loved this game years ago and had a blast playing it. The strategy layer is pretty engaging, and the battles (while they have their quirks) are very enjoyable. The world and lore all well developed, and the scripted adventures are really cool to play. The morality/religion system offers real trade offs and greatly increases replayability. Anyone who likes total war but maybe wishes it had a heavier emphasis on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not very good. Poor mechanics and not very well made. Save your money. I didn't find any redeeming qualities.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not many games like King Arthur. The role playing aspect adds new flavor to a strategy game, as well as the much-loved-by-me magic system for heroes in the game. The game has a challenging economy system and keeps you on your toes to make sure your heroes stay happy and with you during the campaign. Love the DLC content to this game also, so be sure you get those as well. The morality system adds nice replay value to the game also, as you can replay the game and take on a different role as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am loving this game. Proper 4X strategy in a familiar format. Great campaign, karma system with good and evil on one axis, and old druid faith vs christianity on the other axis. Heroes can be recruited and maintained throughout the campaign, which can level up and be given new abilities, spells, and equipment. 9/10 so far. My only complaint is some slight trouble with selecting enemy units in battles, occasionally have to pause the game and move the mouse around for a few seconds before you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →C++ Runtime Error
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are lucky and you can actually play this game (odds are you wont be, it crashes constantly), then it's okay, the setting is ok, the story is ok. But! You probably won't be able to play it, because it just doesn't run on modern computers, do NOT buy this game because you will not be able to play it!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So bad... Crashes randomly, keyboard stops responding in the middle of battles, tutorial completely useless, outdated gameplay, graphics, etc... Just don't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this is one of the first games I bought on Steam, but I didn't review it at the time. Back then I had kind of long load times that made me dread everytime I had to enter a new battle. But now I'm trying it again with my much upgraded computer (only the chassis, keyboard and mouse of the original remain) and it's a much smoother experience. There's so much to like about this game. While the tactical do eventually get repetitive (how can they not), they are also varied with a lot of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game and story seem good, but you will have a 90% + 10% chance of a C++ Runtime Error crash before, after, and during battles which makes this game nearly impossible to enjoy and play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im a GAMER i DONT HAVE A LIFE because I CHOOSE TO HAVE MANY
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even if you're a fan of the setting, the technical shortcomings of this game are too much of a burden imo.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Good Old Game Version seems to work better than Steam* I love this old game. It may not be as complex as Total War, but it's just fun. Taking your units into a batlle that the game tells you will be a loss and coming out with almost every unit is satisfying. Things get dificult at points and the pacing can get whacky. The game will throw very tough enemies at you if your good. Some objectives must be completed to move the story forward and knowing what and where can be tough. To me, all of it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game always crashes if you use the tutorial battle mode at the end of combat with a run time error
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Think purchasing this I was expecting something like heroes of might and magic but its more like crusader kings I think. Honestly all a bit dry and bloated. Does work on steam deck though "cutscenes" are completely broken. Skip them and you can play fine.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was fun at the time. Aged like old milk, though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is sadly one of the most astonishingly poorly balanced games I've ever played, and that's when it bothers to work. Even with every province under your control and fully researched tech tree, you can only support two standing armies, one if they're the top end troops, otherwise you begin to bleed food, and no food means no recruitment so you can't replenish those armies. Couple this with a game of whack-a-mole of False Prophets and Rebellions, both of which lead you to losing entire…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has it's flaws and probably doesn't really stand the test of time, but I really enjoyed it. It feels like a somewhat amateurish and unpolished spiritual predecessor to Total War: Warhammer. Fun battles with some city management, quests and hero progression.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →dont buy this game from steam . this version has a bug that cause crashing and after a lot of search for fix and 8 times trying to refund , still i wasnt able to do neither . it says i played 5 hours which is a lie because steam hours are more like 30 min , cause they live in different world with different clock .. called cash-grab greed-town . why else they would put a 100% unplayable game in their store ?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, this game is literally unplayable. It is plagued by crashes on new systems, and while at the beginning they are not that frequent, it gets worse and worse, to the point it crashes every battle (often on loading screen after you win!) and every few saves, while saves in question tend to corrupt. If it was only about saves, it would be playable but it is not possible to win majority of battles using autoresolve as most armies you meet are theoretically stronger than yours. So you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been a long time since I either played or reviewed this game so I'll just repeat myself for those of my friends that may have missed it the first time around. This is one of the more original titles out there and still holds up fairly well despite its age. It is a hybrid between a Total War style of play on the one hand and a choose-your-own type story path on the other. The two elements mix extremely well and, along with the mythical storyline, gel to create something that is more than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a mix of Total War combat and strategy mixed with role playing story elements and magic you can use on the battlefield. When it came out it was great game however it you are after a fantasy style total war game now there is TW Warhammer available. This game would really only suit people who are really into King Arthur lore. Also the multiplayer functionality was based on GameSpy so no longer works.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh. The battles were so dull and the scrolly-text was disinteresting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of flaws, so I'm hesitant to recommend it, but it is a good time. Pros: imaginative, brings the whole Total War genre to fantasty (years before Warhammer Total War), cool systems like the alignment system and the ability to take prisoners Cons: slow, balancing issues, no freeplay mode and the campign has a bizarre difficulty curve, quests/missions get annoying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Random runtime error crashes on a 6 thousand dollar setup are annoying :D Also, 10 years later and you would think they would have fixed some of the bugs, this company gets a 1/10 from me for laziness.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its just a bit too gimmicky, a bit too unbalanced, a bit too ugly and a bit too forgetable. I have played this for 50 hours a few years ago and remember nothing about the story, only that entering the late game felt vaguely interesting and mysterious, while the battles became enormously difficult. I also consider withholding content to push some mini dlcs to be insulting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it can't make up its mind about whether it wants to be a strategy game or an RPG, and gets unnecessarily convoluted with all the little items and RPG elements. i may have enjoyed this had it stuck to one or the other, but the combination of the two did not work well for this title, in my opinion.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ridiculously unbalanced, on the edge of not working, and I have a way better machine than needed to handle this game. It doesn't hold up over the years since its release. It's a rather bad gameplay experience. Would not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The "choose your own adventure" type of things are the worst parts of the game, but other terrible things are where the AI can scale from just the time passing while you have to battle constantly for that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is worth the price................................the end.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →King Arthur The Role-Playing Wargame! Studio's done a few King Arthur games but the original was a fun but very buggy/unbalanced Total War clone that married RPG elements and a branching choices far before Creative Assembly would do the same for Three Kingdoms+Warhammer. The art direction rules too
unlabelledView post →Is the game good? Beats me. The game doesn't properly fit my screen. I tried a few different resolutions with no fix. Even when I did manage to get to the battle, the camera controls didn't allow me to zoom out properly, making controlling my units difficult. Got too many game to play to mess with stuff like this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played it years ago, and there it was already a very unstable game. Surprised to see after all kind of patches game still crashes after each manual battle. Unbelievable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has an attractive concept and good story and lore. I tried it a few times years apart as I want it to be good enough to give it a few times but I never got far. Probably it is kind of broken.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is hard, but captures the essence of the Arthurian Mythos elegantly.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The system is very complex, the balance is alright, the graphic need to be updated but overall this is a great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great story and fun gameplay. Unfortunately, is plagued by random crashes. Makes game virtually impossible to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is too crashy (I have Win10). First there was an issue with widescreen/resolution, but this is easy to fix with searching. Then about every 3rd battle the game crashed just after placing troops and starting battle - In first 6 hours I played it crashed about 7 times, I don't have patience for this... Fix which is out there does not work for steam version I've read. And the game didn't seem good enough for me to live with the crashes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is awesome but steam version is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It crashes frequently due to C++ redist error.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can see why this is $2......It's horrible. Crashes and freezes too much. Good concept, bad game. After loading from a save, it kept skipping turns for well over 500 turns until I turned the whole game off, had to force close it. Controls are simply awful and camera can't even turn. Spend your money on something better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →King Arthur The Role Playing Game is a Total War Game with a fantasy twist. It's main campaign evolves around the King Arthur Legend with an interesting role play addition. You can choose Arthur's destiny and forge his legend either as a wise lawful ruler or as a chaotic tyrant. The game seem to support both options! by actually giving you choices between recruiting good knights and units or evil ones. It has a unique allignment system that respond to your game play actions by giving you…
