60 of 186 · most liked firstI know the book series well and played this game to learn more of the universe. It's not a good game. It is basically an interactive book in the style of the gamebooks but with a lot of video game-like combat. However, there are lots of flaws in the combat: - The combat is not very interesting. It's turn-based combat, which is not necessarily terrible, but it also has action elements. For example, you need to click your skills fast or your opponents will attack you. On hard difficulty, you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am sorry. I am a great fan of Lone Wolf and I still have all the books from the nineties. The game in general feels a lot like the books, but the combat is awful. It should have been done turn based, with tables or rolls, just to be in line with books adventures, instead they choose to try to attract more casual/hardcore players (yes! Both at the same time!) with a terrible result. I can't stand to "live an adventure" repeating the same combat 3 times before going on. And after you win, you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat is definitely no fun. It is turn based but you have limited time to take action in some weird UI. I really wanted to give it a shot for rp's sake but combat just sucks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't recommend this game as its controls are terrible, and are designed for a tablet or phone. It's probably a great game on the iPad. The good Interesting paths and choices Reasonable graphics and animations Leandra is an appealing character The bad Everything else, examples: Over-reliance on QTEs that favour a swipe mechanism And these make the game a chore The story is nothing special. You've seen and heard it all before.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →what the tags didnt emphasise for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason, that its a writing heavy, turn based game. The pictures are misleading, I was expect at least half of the gameplay to be real time action combat. 90% text, all clicking, no real time combat, but the turns have a timer for SOME reason. At least the artwork/paintings are nice. But know what you are getting into.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No real narrative game play and needlessly complicated combat. Not what I was expecting and a bit disappointing. It looked like it was an rpg not a text based adventure with occasional fight scenes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are looking to revisit Lone Wolf in digital format, I'd suggest you take a pass on this meandering story and combat system. Over the course of 4 years, I've picked up this title on and off, attempting to complete it in honor of Dever and childhood memories. Finally, two weeks ago I began the long trek for the final time. So here's the bad in the game: - Repetitive sentences: The entire game you will read about how tired Lone Wolf after a fight. I've read that line in some form AT LEAST…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not Turn-Based. You have a defined amount of time to perform combat actions and then there are QTEs to waste the game for good. Maybe if you're playing on a touch screen it can have a reason to exist. Not for me though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is pretty well done all things considered, but it really feels like two games bolted on to one another. My biggest complaint is that the gamebook + action RPG formula just doesn't work. Each is done competently (though not amazingly), but the combination is completely jarring. If they had stuck with one format or the other, it'd be great. Here I am quietly reading a decent (though not groundbreaking) story in text form for a minute, and then I have to do quick time events in 3D…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More of a 'choose your own adventure' book than a game. I usually play this to fall asleep. If you're into tabletop RPG's and immersive stories, this might be up your alley...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive read most of his lone wolf game book series, but this game doesnt remind me a bit of Joe Dever's lone wolf version. The game user interface does look amazing and impressive, but the core of the game battle as with some of the players have already posted before me stated, this game battle system is very clunky. As I try to give the game a few chance and went through the game battle, but I still fail in the boss fights which is I find myself laughable at best. The sommerswerd is not a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning: Game spoilers – major spoilers hidden. In Joe Dever's Lone Wolf, you play as Lone Wolf, the Last of the Kai, Lord Protector of Sommerlund. Everything starts when you get an urgent message stating the frontier village of Rockstarn is likely about to be attacked by monsters and the enemy of the Kai. Immediately jumping on your horse and making your way there, you find you are much too late. Fight back against enemy forces, rescue the villagers, and storm the fortress of V’taag after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is by far the hardest negative review I've had to make, because I *liked* this game. I just also recognize that it's rife with bad design choices that make it completely unsuitable for anyone who is not already a big fan of the source material. For those unfamiliar, Lone Wolf is based on a series of popular "gamebooks", which for the even more unfamiliar, were very similar to choose-your-own-adventure novels, but with elements of tabletop RPGs. The video game adaptation tries to translate…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Growing up I luved reading the old Lone Wolf books. They were so well written. This game brings back the memories and is fun to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's no denying this is one of the most impressively "presented" gamebook adaptations you could hope for. The artwork is gorgeous, there's some lovely maps, spiffy menus, great music and sound design...you name it. It's also one of the least "user-friendly" such games you could expect to encounter, and the learning curve is pretty steep to say the least. Add to this an auto-save system that means you can only go back and redo bits to a certain degree...and you may well find yourself…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is for touch screens only. Playing this with a mouse is just awful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice game...until you reach the first combat section. Avoid this QTE crapfest like the plague!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just don't want Lone Wolf to be what this is. It's constant combat scene, laden with quick time events, an awful lock picking minigame. I want to read the story and make interesting choices. But you just get a little smidgen of story before you have to fight another giak. I haven't played the game very far, but the choices don't seem very game changing either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beaten the game. Act I on normal. Had to switch on easy for act II onward. Giving it a thumbs down, because I don’t think it is as good as most people write. A solid 6/10 game. It is originally a mobile game, so the QTE combat makes sense. After a couple of fights you can adapt and it stops being so bothersome. Still missing an event can be incredibly punishing. There is only one instance where one might decide to fail on purpose and that is when overexerting causes you to use HP instead of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Recommended for hardcore RPG enthusiasts and lovers of novel like game experiences, the game has a pretty high learning curve and people not accustomed to the "real time" battle system and quick-time events will probably struggle in more difficult combat encounters. Play it on easy for the AMAZING story if you find it too difficult, Normal difficulty seemed very very tough but doable and ultimately a difficult but worthwhile challenge. I got over 20 hours in just 1 playthrough and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game tries to stay true to the "choose your own adventure" format, the mechanics are confusing and make little sense. Trying to perform combat is a weird mix of mouse clicks and motions. I appreciate the atmosphere of the game & it's effort to be true to the old school novel format, but as a turn-based combat RPG game, it is not very fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#225 out of 558)... it's time for Joe Dever's Lone Wolf HD. I am immediately suspicious of any game that has some random dude's name tacked onto the title. I am equally suspicious of any game with "HD" in the title. Doubly so if I've never heard to the dude, or the game, before. But as much as it surprises me to say it, Lone Wolf might be worth your time. Maybe. Even if, and you know I hate to say it,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible QTE game, with a nice story but garbage gameplay mechanics. Had to request a refund sin the screenshots do not match the description of the game. It was clearly made for tablets not PC.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The write your own adventure is nostalgic and the storyline so far is fine. The combat system was so bad I lost interest. Was a neat idea, but to complex. Too much click fast, drag this way and that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not a bad game, just not a game for me. The screenshots above show mostly the combat, however, it took me about 15min to just get past the reading section of the game. It seems to mix the story telling into the game as more important than gameplay. The game does not rely on you moving the character around and exploring to learn the story, the story is simply given to you and you must read it. Like I said- not a bad game, just not a game for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the end I didn't like this game very much. I thought is was going to be an open world game I didn't know it was actually a turn-base game. The reason why I'm recommending this game even thou I didn't like it, I still think it was a really good game, I just wish it was free roam type of game instead of turn-base. I suck at turn-base, I have to go on easier difficulties where I can always go on max difficulties on real time games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe it's good storytelling, maybe not. I didn't have the patience to find out. I got too annoyed by the overly verbose handling mechanisms. UI animations where too much and taking too much time, as if the makers wanted you to see the animation of menu items as a replacement of actual graphical gaming animations. I got annoyed within 30 minutes and I uninstalled the game. Not for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a fun experience going through this game. Im not familiar with Joe Dever's choose your own path novels but the writing here is up to par for the most part. Choosing different options was interesting enough but the choices I made were dictated by my build rather than moral decisions for the most part. The combat is very repetitive, there's a lack of spells and weapons so I ended up just wanting to get past those sections to the part of the game that's actually enjoyable. I've read that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a laxative. Trivial story, pathetic protagonist and atrocious combat system
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly I cannot recommend this game: - Story formulaic and extremely tropey (Strong noble lord, feisty but also submissive and delicate female characters etc etc) - Game mechanisms repetitive and boring - Combat repetitive and boring The story did not grip me at all. It reads like poor 1970s fantasy. I'm sad because I'm a big fan of fantasy novels and games, so this seemed perfect. It's the opposite.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is basically a choose-your-own-adventure with a fantasy style. Some of your stats and abilities impact the options you have available to you. The adventure itself is the strength of the game. The options presented are varied and it is fun to explore and make decisions. The game has a fairly lackluster story and the writing is a mixed bag. There are tons of repetitive segments of the text which describe attacking enemies or sneaking up on them which gets old fast. The part of the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay when I started playing this game it wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a full blown 3d rpg where I could explore and fight the way i wanted to. Instead I get what is basically a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book that is interspaced with 3D Active Time Battle System fights. So I was disappointed. ... ... ... But then it grew on me. And I liked the story. I was playing Normal and the fights were pretty engaging, especially since I mostly took the non-aggressive route so…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the game years ago on another account. Now bought it on this account! Game is great! I wish it was longer / there was a sequel! Fight mechanics (clicking circles like a mad man) are quiet annoying on PC - but that's the only downside. Otherwise this is a master piece!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Joe Dever's Lone Wolf HD Remastered is a video game adaptation of the popular Lone Wolf book series. The game was developed by Forge Reply and published by Bulkypix. It was released in 2014 and is available on PC and mobile devices. The game is a mix of action, role-playing, and choose-your-own-adventure gameplay. Players control Lone Wolf, a warrior-monk who must journey through a fantasy world to stop an evil lord from taking over the land. The game features a deep and engaging storyline…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a great adventure this was to play through. Never heard of the series, but the game still provides a well rounded story with legendary items of unknown origin(if you did not read the books). You get a little bit of lore about them here and there, but most of the time it remains a mystery. Well, the game has a great challeging battle system and a lovely adventure to go through told in first person so that one gets the emotions as well. My only criticism would be the lack of diversity in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is generally really good although originally a mobile game. its concept isnt really that bad and its executed effectively. Sick of the same enemies well just hope they are the weak ones cause facing other monsters aside from giaks and Drakkahim are pure nightmare fuel to deal with unless you are stacked. Sick of enemy encounter well thats too bad cause you need those fights to make money. Sick of quick time events dont worry most of the places where you swipe and click are in the same…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A well written and atmospheric adventure. I normally hate quick time events, as they interrupt the normal flow of a game, but by making them the basis of combat a more strategic way of fighting is produced. After a short while, it becomes second nature. Best of all, as a fan of the original game book series, this is an official part of the saga.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely FANTASTIC gamebook, but with full 3D "turn-based action" combat!! Great writing, plenty of choices to make, a lot of loot and other fun features like upgrading gear and exploring around beautiful hand-drawn maps to find all sorts of surrpises. Very good RPG, thanks Joe & co.!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a big fan of the lone wolf booh serie and the game itself is nice but the combat system of this game is just a real pain and given the number of combats, I have just stopped playing. Like to be killed in a combat wo being able to do anything ? The game may do it and you can just watch ennemies killing you without giving you a chance to do anything. The next fight you can have plenty of initiative, do all possible actions and just wait like an idiot because all possible actions are in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a fun "choose ur own adventure" game where choices matter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game looks great and has fantastic source material and artwork, however the enemy combat is badly stacked against you and thus badly balanced. Especially on hard mode this game will be punishing you with OP battles very early on. And in spite of the fact that you're supposed to get better loot for hard setting battles, you don't really seem to get that much better loot than in normal mode. Not enough to make you feel like the "risk" and (very hard) work was worth the "reward" anyway. Also,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning, I played this game with huge nostalgia goggles. As a kid, I was a huge fan of the "make your own adventure"-type of books, and Mr. Dever's Lone Wolf series was among the most memorable for me. To get to experience it again 35 years later as a computer game was a delight. The story was good, with the typical choice-determined story forks; the game mechanics are immersive with a mix of RPG/first-person POV action; and graphics hold-up well as complement to the writing. Thank you Mr.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Joe Dever has featured on my bookshelves for decades, along with the likes of Steve Jackson, Ian Livingstone and co. A digital adaptation of his work is a fine idea, taking the strong core of the book and expanding it with greater inventory management and the like. Sadly, it's all let down by a truly awful combat system which first dampened my enjoyment and eventually proved an impassable barrier. It's a clumsy combo of turn-based and real-time, with quick-time events. The QTEs are a mere…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The combat is really unfun, and the choose your own adventure stuff is actually pretty cool, but having a voiced narrator would have really made this more enjoyable. Not a bad idea, just not so great execution overall.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended for fans of choose your own adventure stories/VNs and RPGs. It leans a lot into the novel side so be ready for some reading, but there are plenty of battles and tinkering with items and abilities as well. I would also recommend you check out Hand of Fate, Dark Quest 3, and Pillars of Eternity. +Music +Variety of options, key rebinding +Story choices +Variety of skills, abilities +Voiced intro +Choose your adventure feel +Variety of equipment upgrades +Battle visuals +Good…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been reading Lone Wolf adventures and other interactive game books from Joe Dever since childhood. I still find his books awesome to this day. This game captures the same excitement perfectly with combat being just a tad more exhilarating. It is a must for all Lone Wolf fans in my opinion. Just make sure you know how combat works before diving into the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was looking forward to something like the books as I was a huge fan back in the day, but the prose and choices in this iteration were overshadowed by all the quick time events. They happen in combat, during skills usage, and probably others. I stopped playing after the second combat.

"Joe Dever's Lone Wolf" has an unconventional premise; you're basically reading your RPG this time. That's right! The game plays inside of a book, and your usual cutscenes this time around take place in an animated page. The story holds up quite well actually; with choices that change your whole adventure as you write and read it at the same time. Let me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great adaptation of the adventure spirit of the books. The menus, the combat, the look, all are high quality. This is a truly underrated gem. Got me instantly hooked up!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Presentation is good, but not exemplary; there are spelling mistakes and no matter what font you use, some of the text placement is awkward; e.g. words split across pages. Illustration pages are animated at key points, but within the text there is a seemingly random set of images between paragraphs now and again, which have nothing to do with what you’re reading. I’ve only done the first Act, but I’d say there was far too much repetition - it’s just the same battles with variations on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game, there your choices really matters. Love it. And it took almoust 19 hours of gameplay to finish. Never seen game like this, but really liked it. Thanks for developers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another reading game. I do not like reading games. But this one? This one does worth your time. I have played several other games where the emphasis was on reading but there was no joy in it even though people say that their story was great. Why? Presentation... small text in a small box in a tiny corner of the screen. Very uncomfortable. But here? Text has excellent art/design, they have put it so that it covers half of the screen (on the other half you can manage your character/etc.). When…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now that was a very fun and interesting ride. Never played anything like this before. At first I struggled with the game mechanics during the fighting, but very soon I figured how to handle it and it became very easy with the time. The mouse movements you have to do become very easy once you really understood how it works. I skilled my intelligence and got tons of time to do fighting actions in each round and had about 3 realoads after lost fights during the whole game, played on normal…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is potential in this genre and in this gameplay style, but the end result for this game isn't satisfying. The story is pretty boring and unoriginal, combat is repetitive and straightforward, the characters are shallow, generic, too much heroism and teenage material, the enemies are pretty generic copy cats of goblins and orcs and liches under different names, too focused on combat and looting but not enough dialogues. The graphics are ok and the hand drawn art work are fine, the interface…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For some reasons after buying this game was surprised that this game is not an gothic-like rpg, but still it was nice playing it. The game has it's own charming lore and keeps you involved into gameplay right after first 15 minutes passing, just give it a chance.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR worth the cost (especially on sale) for good atmosphere, soundtrack, and artwork. Combat gets a bit monotonous though. I was surprised and happy to see this suggested to me by Steam, especially as it was on sale for less than the cost of a beer. I was a big fan of all the nineties gamebooks so it was a nice bit of nostalgia. The game takes place as a reader turning the pages of a book - you guide Lone Wolf through his adventures, and every now and again make a choice which affects…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For you are now the last of the Kai—you are now the Lone Wolf. Do you know Lone Wolf? Do you like the gamebooks written by Joe Dever? You will probably love this game. Do you enjoy simple, choice-based narrative game with an extra mini-game of fighting disguised as resource management? You will probably enjoy this game. As a disclaimer, this is NOT a gamebook, it is written by Joe Dever, creator of the Lone Wolf series of gamebook, it is based in that world with the main character but that's…
