Dungeon Keeper is a strategy video game developed by Bullfrog Productions and released by Electronic Arts on 27 June 1997 for MS-DOS and Windows 95. In Dungeon Keeper, the player builds and manages a dungeon, protecting it from invading "hero" characters intent on stealing its accumulated treasures, killing monsters and ultimately the player's demise. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dungeon Keeper Gold on Steam feels like EA’s latest attempt at squeezing a bit more money out of a classic title with minimal effort. The game was groundbreaking back in 1997, thanks to Bullfrog’s innovative take on the "god game" genre. But now, EA's re-release of Dungeon Keeper Gold™ in 2024 does little to improve or update the game for modern audiences. The only real update here is compatibility with modern systems, but it's pretty clear that this release is primarily aimed at cashing in on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still an amazing game, even after all these years. Seeing as this is still an MS-DOS game, if you're used to modern gameplay, it can be a bit frustrating to play if you're not used to the way things worked back then. It is a bit unfortunate that no effort was put into slightly modernising the game before putting it on steam. However, luckily there's a fan-made expansion etc, called KeeperFX, that greatly improves usability, screen resolution, ... Definitely have look at that and consider…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To use KeeperFX to count towards Steam playtime Download and extract KeeperFX into this very special directory: ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Dungeon Keeper\DOSBOX This directory should now include following exe files: DOSBox Launcher.exe DOSBox.exe Dungeon Keeper.exe keeperfx.exe keeperfx_hvlog.exe launcher.exe Within this directory, do a backup of the original "Dungeon Keeper.exe". Rename it into "Dungeon Keeper.exe.bak" for example. Now create a copy of "keeperfx.exe" and rename it into…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →👍 Recommended — one of the greatest games ever made. Just don't play this version of it. Dungeon Keeper is a masterpiece. You're the villain for once: you carve out a dungeon, lure in monsters, build torture chambers and treasure rooms, and turn the "heroes" who come to raid you into corpses (or converts). It's part strategy, part dungeon-management sim, part dark comedy — and the narrator alone is worth the price of admission. Slapping your imps to make them dig faster never gets old.…

Now I have to open my PC up to data pirates to do just the same. Ladies and gents we have arrived in the future of gaming. And its hopeless.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somehow the oldest version of this game is unmatched. Wish they would just redo the graphics for this version instead of the failing they did with the sequels to it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“I like being bad. It makes me happy.” ~Venom Fresh ideas. No matter how you look at it, those are, like, the most valuable thing. Sure, you can do with copy/pasted content for some time, but at some point you'll need to come up with something new. When it's about present times, those Activision and Ubisoft titles are a perfect example. Again and again we're getting ourselves the same game. The. Same. Exact. Game. Doesn't even matter how good such a game is. After playing two or three clones?…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is from 1997 and there are still no official patches for modern PCs. When you buy the game you have to play in extremely low resolution and must install mods and workarounds to get it to work properly. I ended up just downloading and installing KeeperFX (essentially a free fan-made mod of for the game) and rigging it to work on Steam. As far as gameplay goes, it's pretty fun and has a humorous theme of British black humor. However, it also shows it's age. It feels like an RTS where…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an excellent game and an easy favorite for me, I wish there were more like it. I come back to it every few years since 1997. This is just the DOSBox port with no additional enhancements (same as the version on GOG) and you should probably pick up KeeperFX for its bugfixes and enhanced visuals and compatibility. You need the original game files to run KeeperFX, but it's a standalone remake with some additional content (of sometimes questionable quality) restored.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its a great game however some settings and options are broken. the game works best when a mod is installed called "keeperfx". this isn't a difficult task and there are many guides on steam that explain the process
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played this game for 25 years. I still remember going over to my friend's house to play against him for hours. Must have played thousands of hours, I never counted. It's one of those games I either keep installed, or re-install on every machine I own. It's perfectly balanced, great fun, complex as in deep while user friendly, with fantastic replayability, great humour, incredible voice acting, with a coherent identity. I've been waiting for decades for a graphical step-up, so naturally…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I Played this game 30 years ago when it first came out and remember loving it but figured there is no way it holds up to today but was shocked to find this game is still a ton of fun with some really quite good voice acting that sets a great dark comedic tone. Yeah the graphics are kinda jagged blobs and controls are ....antiquated but DAMN if it isnt't still fun to smack your minions and spread evil to the pathetic soft overworld. Old AF but holds up great and still tons of fun, Grade S mid…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The slap mechanic is still hilarious and the dungeon building is endlessly satisfying. This game remains one of the most clever RTS/god games ever made and proof that classics never die.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite childhood game, and it´ll be for EVER. i would love to play a remaster of this game eventually !! 😍 (Yeah, i´m already using KeeperFX 😊)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Updated review to include Deeper Dungeons. I'l keep the bad vote bad so people that read see the patch note! Since this is 1995 code, the lack of accessibility + bugs are hard to ignore. The game runs properly but FPS does not after 50-100 creatures exist in a map. => THERE IS A FREE UPDATED PATCH VERSION CALLED DUNGEON KEEPER FX so lets go and play that instead!!! Now as for this actual game review: + It is the progenitor and inspiration behind innumerable (mini) games and so much more.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dungeon keeper was and still is an amazing game, but there is a bug with this version that causes your cursor to get stuck on the left side of the screen. It makes the game unplayable and the only way to get out of it is a forced shutdown :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dungeon Keeper Gold™ was released on Steam in 2024, yet it still lacks modern control mapping (WASD) and resolution settings, which was the least the development team could do if they were going to release a gold edition of the 1997 classic. As expected, players are expected to save a lot, as the enemy AIs, specifically opposing keepers, are given certain level advantages (more gold and other resources on their side of the map). They are aggressive in that they always drop all of their units…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game back in the day so I was over the moon when I stumbled on it in the store. Unfortunately, it ended up being unplayable for me. There was only full screen mode or a tiny window. Full screen was no good with the older graphics, can't understand what you're looking at. The small window is too small and not adjustable. I kept changing the mouse sensitivity but it seemed to do nothing. Mouse moved too fast for me to play. There's not many other options in the game to change to make…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →absolute classic - truly nothing comes close to the gritty aesthetic of the original Dungeon Keeper. what it lacks in story it makes up for in gameplay and visual uniqueness. my only issue is the insane difficulty spike near the final levels - tried for hours to get past a certain level but just couldn't do it, i probably just suck too much ass
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dungeon Keeper: A Nostalgic Dive into the Depths of Evil Some games age like fine wine, and Dungeon Keeper is one of them. Released in 1997 by Bullfrog Productions, this dungeon-building classic still holds up today with its pixelated charm, creative mechanics, and darkly humorous spirit. For anyone who played it when it came out—or those curious about where the dungeon-building subgenre began—it’s a worthwhile trip down memory lane. The pixel art, though unmistakably old-school, blends…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game I never paid attention to, until I saw this version here on steam. I played Dungeon Keeper 2 in the past & dismissed the the quiet dissappointment of the Dungeon Keeper sequel. I actually was shocked how much charm it actually has, compared to Dungeon Keeper 2 and even outside of it. Little details all coming together is what makes this game stand the test of time. I do recommend looking into KeeperFX, a giant fan-mod that fixes bugs and adds quality of life features to make playing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a great game even today. As other have echoed I would definitely recommend getting the Dungeon Keeper FX overhaul as it brings the game from 1995 to 2024 graphics and game play wise. Working my way through the new good campaign and its a blast!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very unique Real Time Strategy game when compared to others of its time, allowing the player direct control of his units. Even to the point of possessing units and seeing the world through their eyes. This was very innovative stuff for the 90s. Where Dungeon Keeper really shines was its sense of humor, in which everything good and pure in the world seemed appalling to you and your minions.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this in the 90's. Loved it then. Only stoped as the computers got to powerful for it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →don't be fooled by my playing time, i finished the game with KeeperFX community mod and so should you! it's all QoL stuff for nicer and smoother experience
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full screen with resolution 640x480 with zero configuration. Mouse sensitivity is so high that the game is unplayable. The sensitivity can be only changed in the main menu, and even decreasing it to minimum doesn't solve the problem. It's my favourite childhood game, but this port is so poor, that it's definitely not worth £4.99.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i can quite confidently call this the most underrated game i know. it's the only game i know that scratches some unnameable itch within my brain. it really baffles me how unknown the game is in the wider gaming public. it's amazing!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played this game since i was 6 years old. Seeing this game finally launch on steam makes my heart skip a beat. If you want to feel some nostalgia back to late 90's i higly recommend playing this game. Definitly one of the best RPG games and that says alot since this game was first launched back in the 90's
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Make no mistake based on my playtime. I have THOUSANDS of hours on this dating back to when I played this religiously back on Windows ME (yes, i'm old). Is this game perfect? Does it have fancy graphics? Is it clunky at times? Where are all the quality of life additions? No, No, Yes, and They didn't exist back then! All that being said. If you have never played this absolute MASTERPIECE of a game, if you're willing to take a trip down nostalgia lane, if you can look past the dated…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels good to be bad, Dungeon keeper is a cult classic from the late 90s. You will find PLENTY of user made materials and patches.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good memories, lots of fun make sure to use the KeeperFX mod
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An old DOS game, but the game makes it fun to be evil. The narrator's voice and the setting are worth the time.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was such a great game back in 1997 and still is. I caught myself playing it from time to time and I still have an original CD. I remember begging my parents to get me DK2 when it was released. I like the heroes and creatures a lot more in this game. Dragons, Vampires, Ghosts, spiders and hellhounds! I can just spend hours hanging around in the levels until all creatures reach level 10 through training. Also this part is better : You can have your own horny-pet in the later levels and it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Even better with KeeperFx mod
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glad that steam added this. But dissappointed that it hasn't been updated to be synced with the new hardware & software tech. As a result the game runs on a DOS Emulator, is buggy and gets stuck often. Which may be better if folks just decide to play it on free online emulators instead of buying it here. Other than that, this remains a super stimulating excellent game that it had always been. Highly recommended to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play this game when I was very young. And now I'm so glad to play it again. I've never finished it though T_T
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Branna Hawk - War and anthrax have taken to this land like fleas to a rat. The region is (thanks to your unstinting efforts) now a major eye-sore. Shame that KeeperFX is encrypted. Whats the point of making something "open source" if you're going to lock it behind a password?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With KeeperFX mod installed this is arguably even better than DKII. We should never forgive EA for what they did to Bullfrog. I hope EA get woke AF so that they go bankrupt.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite many years this game is still fantastic! A bit difficult to get used to graphics after this many years and nowadays games, but after a while you ignore it, because the game itself is a true wonder.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another good old Classic returned! crappy grapics? CHECK, Somewhat clunky controls? CHECK. in other words, PERFECT! :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bought the game. played it about 7 hours. now it wont launch. so i cant play it. i get a create failed in a command prompt window then nothing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy Moly. Before you get ahead of yourself and dive in as a result of the glowing (and likely nostalgia-soaked) reviews, HEED YE HERE, KEEPER: This game is Old. *Real* old. I'm talking that quirky, Japanese-inspired PS1 era old. The kind that scrolls *way* too fast when you move the mouse to the edge of the screen, the map-scrolling speed is jarringly slow, the top-down FoV is WAY too tight, the options menus are *obtuse*, and some things just don't make sense. Indeed, while you posess a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought I was the only one who knew about this game and about died when it came across my suggested feed. Amazing blast from the past. Anyone who is new and are considering it, for 4.99, its a steal. Very cool MSDOS game. I recommend shrinking the aspect ratio because this version was ment for an older monitor it seems. 10/10 Dungeon Sim
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →buy this and use KeeperFX mod. that is all. oh and it works on Linux to, with mod and all
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I downloaded it. Made sure it works. Am satisfied to have reclaimed some nostalgia. DK2 is what I will play if I want to play this. The sequel is basically the same game. Modest upgrade to graphics. Cool cutscenes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game take me back, a few bugs like in the mouse and could stand some graphics up date but for $5 hell can you go wrong
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game from back in the days. The pixel art is a little dates but its from 1997 cant expect too much. the controls use the arrow keys when you would think wasd. Sometimes the UI goes away so you have to save and load the game. If you tab out you have to alt + enter to get full screen again.
