Developer Strategy First
Disciples II: Dark Prophecy is a 2002 turn-based strategy game by Strategy First for Microsoft Windows. It is the sequel to the 1999 game Disciples: Sacred Lands, and has become significantly more successful in terms of both sales and popularity than its predecessor. My older brother and I are home after school, booting up our windows XP PC, blowing out dust on the Disciples 2 disk before running it and getting sucked into the sacred grimdark lands of Nevendaar. Disciples 2 was a foundational fantasy strategy game experience up there with titles like age of empires, warcraft and starcraft and we chocked up thousands of hours beating every campaign and scenario multiple times. The Mountain Clans faction in Disciples 2 was my first exposure to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oldie but goodie, especially for fans of turn based strategy games like Heroes and Might and Magic series. This game does have issues running on newer systems so be sure to download and install the following mod into your game directory after installing: https://www.moddb.com/games/disciples-ii-dark-prophecy/downloads/disciples-wrapper-v160
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favorite games of all time, but it's not for everyone. For new players, let's check the good & the bad to help determine if it's the right game for you. THE GOOD: ■ Awesome art style. ■ Awesome soundtrack. ■ A great story with various perspectives to discover, morally grey and grim. ■ Extremely immersive and atmospheric world. ■ Great boss battles, with more strategic than tactical knowledge required. WHAT MIGHT TURN YOU OFF: ■ It's a slow game, so it's not for people who prefer…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Back in the days, I've played Disciples 2 back and forth. All 4 campaigns, lots of skirmishes, countless hours. Time has passed, other games and real life demanded attention. But this game always held a special place in my heart. Today I gave in to the temptation. Installed Gallean's Return, installed the wrapper, made some minor adjustments, launched the game, started the Undead Hordes campaign... It was 9 hours later I've noticed that the daylight was long gone. They just don't make them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disciples II Analysis Pros, Cons, Issues, Analysis and Verdict further down. 🟩 Pros Even after 20+ years, the gameplay remains unparalleled and addictive. It's not merely a turn-based strategy game with resource management and army coordination, but a genre-defining staple that incorporates innovative mechanics that continue to impress to this day. The story-telling is probably the best I've ever had the pleasure to read and listen to, not just stylistically, but content-wise as well. It…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A step-by-step strategy. In the game, you can choose the race of your character: humans, elves, undead, dwarves, demons. The game is one of the main competitors of the Heroes game. In the game, you can campaign for all races, tasks are mainly: kill, capture, and the like. You can also play on the same computer with friends. The opponents in the game are complex, they use various tactics, that is, until you upgrade the characters and understand the abilities of each race, the game seems very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the best game I have ever played, I have no idea why I like this game so much.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played it for the first time a long time ago and it was my first turn-based strategy game I ever played. Loved it. Then, at some point in the future, I just remembered the game and was curious, "Hmm, what if the game's on Steam?". And it really was to my great surprise. I bought it without a second thought and started remembering the old days. The game's definitely worth trying out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WARNING Some players may encounter difficulties with running the game nowadays but it can be solved in 3 minutes at worst. Just refer to the discussions tab and you'll find any solution you need. Personally I recommend you to use "Disciples I & II OpenGL Wrapper" because it is very easy to use and solves the most technical problems. REVIEW This game is legendary and has a lot of potential even in 2024. I spent dozens of hours in D2 twenty years ago and despite the fact I really loved it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is just a treasure chest. Could not even think that it may be so exciting. Yes, I discovered Disciples II (as well as the first ones) only in 2023. You know, back in the days there were 3 outstanding series which shared a lot of similar features, but at the same time had their fundamental differencies. These series were Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders and, of course Disciples. I was (and still am) a Heroes III guy. Also was more or less familiar with Age of Wonders serie. But…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A real challenger to Heroes of Might & Magic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Here's hoping Disciples 5 will return to this formula. One of the best turn-based strategy games alongside heroes of might and magic, with its own unique twist (each unit is more like a mini-hero, where it can level up and even choose different classes to spec into). Played this ~15 years ago, still fun till today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. I was able to get it running but it was extremely slow and then froze when I tried to start the game. I was really looking forward to play it again. I would suggest finding another place to play it. Steam just can't seem to do it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An oldie but a goodie. I've never found another game quite like this one. Love it! I have Windows 10 and have had no issues after installing the following wrapper which I found from this post below: brineandrew has Disciples II: Gallean's Return 8 Aug, 2022 @ 10:13pm Originally posted by XiDragon: The download on Verokster's website is unfortunately down. Would someone please upload the GL Wrapper somewhere else? UPDATE: I found it on ModDB. It is the newest version 1.9 even if it says 1.6…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →old as hell, got me do many things to run it on win 10 but worth it all the memories haha
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is such a great game, graphic design, UI, music, sound effect, gameplay Having a blast 20 years later Unmatched ambiance
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was more of this. Just a simple 6 vs 6 turn-based battles with dark and gothic art style and music. Maybe some minor improvements to the formula and upscaling of graphical fidelity, but nothing else. This game is underappreciated.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, the game works perfectly on windows 11 once you apply some simple corrections that are easily found on the internet. About the game itself, it is clearly something that scratches your HOMM itch, with the following major twist : You do not stack units in your army, instead you rather recruit single units (in the limit of 3 to 5) that accompany your hero and level with him. At the beginning they are extremely weak but quickly ramp up as you bash creeps on the map. Whether it is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where remake? We get ♥♥♥♥ remakes for nearly any imaginable game, but this gem seems completely forgotten (except for the newest Disciples, which is a stinking pile of rubbish).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Change your monitor resolution to 800x600 BEFORE launching. Great game, if you played it as a kid. Not really the move for a modern player
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished playing Disciples again- still one of the best dark-fantasy strategy games ever.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still one of the best turn based RPG out there. I Hope they will make a remake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disciples II: Gallean's Return is an ancient game from 2006. It's a whopping 17 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. A…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun and simple, just remember to use the Compatibility mode.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well it says 412 hours, but this is Steam only. Disciples II is my all time favorite game. I used to have it on CD and played it on so many different PCs and laptops. The biggest appeal is that every race places completely different. They have their individual strengths and weaknesses and require a significantly different playstyle. Leaders carry over during the Saga (Story), gradually getting stronger and stronger. And one of my most favorite aspects of this game are the unit trees. For…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work properly with modern graphics and monitors.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work on modern windows 10 system.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That game does not work on my pc. I was playing it in 90s, but its just can not finish loading in 2025 lol I do not recommend it because you wont be able to play it on Windows 10 or 11
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Getting Disciples 2 to run in Win 11 So I tried to get the game running on Win11 with a fresh install. Here's what worked for me. Pretty easy, once you know what to do. - Install game - Right click on game in library - Select "Manage -> Browse local files" This will open up your windows file explorer with your install directory already selected. From here, we are going to edit two files to allow for compatibility mode. ConfigEditor2.exe - Right click on file in explorer window…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brings me back to my childhood. This was one of first games i ever played and i like it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One on the great classics
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work. Tried multiple times over the years.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Disciples 2 and Rise of the Elves in my teen years. I had so much fun. I did complete all of the campaigns. For me Disciples 2 is the unsung hero of the strategy classics as the crown most of the time is put on Heroes of Might & Magic 3. I really like the style and aesthetics of the game. The races themselves are quite balanced as well as separate units. I recommend this game not only to the old - school gamers, but to anyone, who loves the genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No issues on Steam Deck! Great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My Top 10 Games in no particular order (with the understanding I'm a nostalgia dork with little time to game these days) MDK 2 Witcher 2 (I said what I fucking said) Satisfactory Disciples II Worms Armageddon Arcanum Cuphead Heroes of Might and Magic III Saints Row 2 Subnautica

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are nice artwork and animation, entertaining gameplay and functions, excellent strategies and amazing choices of units and buildings in this turn-based game though the gameplay is slow. Disciples 2 made improvement over disciples 1. There is a new function, instant result in battle, which saves my time and brain in Gallean's Return. I miss the classic artwork of disciples 1, the first of the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disciples II: Gallean’s Return is a comprehensive re-release of the acclaimed turn-based strategy game Disciples II: Dark Prophecy, bundled with its two expansion packs, Guardians of the Light and Servants of the Dark. Developed by Strategy First, this title represents one of the most distinct entries in the strategy genre, combining deep tactical combat with strong RPG elements and a dark, atmospheric fantasy setting. First released in the early 2000s, Gallean’s Return remains a compelling…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A timeless classic comparable to Heroes 3. As the game is very old - make sure to use the HD mod (GL wrapper), makes the game playable on new hardware, and much smoother (it apparently works on every version of the game, even the first title).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We have heroes 3 at home.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It might be the nostalgia talking because I first played this when it was new, but there's a lot of little mechanics here that I don't see in newer games. Passing exp rewards to surviving party members rather than "You joined this fight with 4, so each unit gets 1/4 of the reward even though only 2 survived/stayed." Movement over different terrain varies, so noting if a nearby enemy is flying or whatever and if you're next to trees can really make a difference. The different factions work…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of fun if you like squad turn-based strategies, that also happen to be set in a high fantasy land. Cool animations. Good options. Genuine strategy, and its a real challenge once get deep in the campaigns. And loads of replay value. Not only are there several campaigns but you can try a number of different strategies and enjoy yourself. Also theres skirmish and scenarios. I think theres multiplayer but I never tried. Oh, and the campaign stories are actually entertaining. Voice acting is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good old game! spent some time to make it work on my pc, but now runs smoothly. totaly worth it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately the game just doesn't work. Its a buggy mess that's impossible to actually begin playing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As great as I remembered it. Basically it improves on everything that was already solid in the first game. And throws in some great artwork, music and sound. Same solid gameplay but with a new coat of paint that makes it even more enjoyable. The overworld art is absolutely gorgeous and the units are each of them beautifully drawn and animated. A joy to look at. A 9/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Steam version isn't working. If I purchase the game license, it should function properly without needing extra modifications. The same applies to 'Disciples II Rise of the Elves'.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Much better than HOMM3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best TBS games ever made... Amazing atmosphere, Great soundtrack, top notch art style and fantastic gameplay! I have spent countless hours playing this game, both on and off steam. Seriously just buy it...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun and light play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has some design flaws, like the player at turn having huge advantage being able to cast spells before a battle and AI being quite stupid, but its one of the classics of TBS genre and i definetly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games to play when you want to relex :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do remember loving this game, as I played for hours and hours back in the days, but this steam version is unplayable!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no idea how I was playing this when I was 7 years old. I'm getting murdered out here!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A long time classic. Kudos to the devs!
