60 of 74 · most liked firstI've just played through the campaign and I'm obliged to write a meaningful review now. First I'll tell a little about the game. The best way to describe this is a Total War-Warcraft-Heroes of Might and Magic mix, where you can't control towns, but only buy troops from them and carry out quests. Something very similar is perhaps Praetorians. Every troop (units are broken into troops, you can't control soldiers individually) gains its own experience and can be upgraded in a town when it reaches…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this was not fun and the tips/tutorial were pretty much useless in figuring out the game. I gave up after a half hour.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better than I expected. The tutorial is lacking a bit but at least it has one. I bet it was amazing at the time it was released. At the sale price of $.51 U.S. you can't go wrong. It even has cards. It runs well on my modern win10 system. If you like early RPG's you'll probably like it, if you don't then you don't lose much for trying it. WASD for the camera with hold R-mouse to rotate helps the camera be a little less wonky..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this when I was much younger and found it again. I am so glad I did as it was one of my favourite games. The game might be slow paced but it's great for learning in this older style strategy game! 10/10 will always play!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A combination of RTS and RPG genres. You assemble an army, complete quests, fight enemies to make the world a safer place and save it from annihilation. You have a wide variety of available troops from human, orc, elf and goblin races including close range fighters, long range troops, mages and even heavy artillery. Also possible to add demons to your army. As you fight enemies, you and your troops gain experience. Your troops get stronger with each level of experience and when a unit reaches…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the rare strategy games that I liked (along with CnC Generals and a few more). Well written story, pretty bad dialogs, not really balanced as you can have so much gold and troops easily, and a few other glitches / bugs but all in all 9/10, because I just liked it lol
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of, like, three actual SRPG in existence (two of which are Battle Mages) — while you can’t exactly build stuff, you should help neutral towns to gather resources and level up to provide you with better units and wares. You have a character with its own progression, you have an army, you have buildings. While the squad combat isn’t the best for tactics\RTS genres, it’s not worse than in some popular games like Age of Empires and stuff. But unlike those you are a mage and you can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tags: Tactical - Fantasy Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Outdated. Too many issues with mechanics, gameplay and AI. I can see how this could had been an awesome game back in the day. It is too dated to be really worth sinking so many hours into, would take a lot of patience to escort squads through all the small scenarios, micromanage them and deal with the AI issues. You need to be very finnicky with your mouse to get the AI to respond and often you need to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In "Battle Mages," the events unfold in a fantasy world that combines elements from various popular fantasy genres of its time. The main character is a graduate of a mage academy tasked with saving the world from evil. His first mission is to guard the borders of his homeland from barbarians and other enemies. After successfully passing his final exam, the hero is sent to a distant province plagued by numerous disasters. Here, restless and disgruntled undead roam the mountains, orcs have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battle Mages is an ancient game from 2003. It's a whopping 20 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks proper widescreen aspect ratio support (it's locked at 4:3) or support for any modern gaming display resolutions, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient, abandoned game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. If you can get it to work,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is good, but barely. Middle of the pack, really. Is a RTS with just a little RPG on it. As usual, there's a villian and you're the nice guy. The campaign is about 20 hours long to finish. There are several spells and different units. You are a wizard and you can select among 4 classes. So, there's some replayability is you care to play them all. The graphics are old, but in a charming old-fashioned way. Now, there are some bugs. The music never worked right for me, it just…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Much of the Steam store page artwork for this game suggests that you have the option play as a sorceress (female) as well as a mage (male). You cannot. This is very misleading. The game only runs in low resolution intended for square monitors; there will be huge black bars either side of the screen. Combat is incredibly slow. You will spend a long time just sitting there while your units fight it out; very boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First time seeing my friends after the trip! We played Epic Spellwars of the Battle Mages Annihillogeddon 2 Extreme Nacho Legends. I played as a train. And lost. Great game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why review this game in 2020? Because I found it in my Steam library and decided to give it a go and wanted to have some notes in Steam to reference if I looked at it again and couldn't remember what it was like. I only really spent 30 - 45 mins playing before deciding that it wasn't worth my time. I don't think it is a terrible game, but there are too many things about it that I found annoying. The biggest problem is the combat is not very engaging. Given that is the main part of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play this game about 15 years ago, when I did not even have my own computer... From time to time I remembered about this game and started looking for it, not remembering it's name or what genre exactly it is. And now I found it. May be it is nostalgy, but I still love it. It looks much more simple these days than long ago, when I was a kid, but it is still quite challenging. I haven't met games similar to this game yet. Though sometimes your troops are extraordinally dumb and plot…

If you don´t know it yet you won´t learn to like it. It´s to old, to bad the graphics, to annoying the mechanics, to slow the pace to really give you something. Even when you usually like old school games. Guess this one wasn´t good even in it´s own time... Wer das Spiel aus seiner Kindheit und Jugend kennt und es damals mochte, mag durch den Kauf etwas Notstalgie gewinnen. Wer es nocht…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The other one I haven't let go of, but its basically Battle Mages where the entire point of the game is spell writing with a modular spell language system that has 13 colleges of magic to bind it all together into taking turns walloping one another with magic.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished campaign. I would definitely recommend the game. It was fun and very particular way of strategy that almost none except something like spellcraft 1 could come close. It might be hard and rough at some edges, but it was very fun to play. Just note that some units and artifacts might not follow you into next chapter of your campaigns, especially, at the end and not beginning. I liked it a lot. There is other campaign available for the other game Battle of Mages: Signs of Darkness. I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One day I just came across this game listed on steam on 50% off. Without any hesitation I bought it and because I played this game in my childhood but wasn't able to complete its campaign that time also lost the original CD of the game. Playing this masterpiece was nostalgic for me.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battle Mages, developed by Targem Games and published by ESDigital Games, is an ambitious blend of real-time strategy and role-playing mechanics that delivers a distinctive fantasy experience unlike many games of its era. Instead of separating strategic warfare from character development, it combines both into a single adventure where players assume the role of a freshly trained mage seeking recognition within the prestigious Battle Mages Guild. This journey unfolds across a magical realm…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Average RTS/RPG blend, with average RTS/RPG blend execution (Looking at you Spellforce) __________________________________________________________________________ Overview: This game is yet another one of those attempts to make a RTS/RPG blend with a stronger lean to the RPG side with intense micro and as cool as the concepts in the game are, the issues within the game turn this into a frustrating journey with questionable decisions, the game itself is pretty interesting, but if any…
