Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue simulates the German drive to Stalingrad and into the Caucasus of the summer of 1942, as well as its May preludes (2nd Kharkov offensive, Operation Trappenjagd) and also the Soviet winter counter-offensive (Operation Uranus) that ended with the encirclement of 6th Army in Stalingrad. It takes a little while to get the hang of it. I had to do the tutorial, a short scenario and watched a couple of youtube videos. The battle mechanics are similar to HOI3, it's even more detailed because you are actually fighting for ground and not just provinces. There is also a little more micro management of units because the divisions are split into various parts. For example Panzer 1 will have 4 separate Panzer brigades, so you will have to move each one separately or as a group. in HOI 3…

This wargame has an interesting focus on Your army management, that I really like. Each turn You get some amount of equipment of different types (different models of guns, armor, trucks, infantry, speciality units, etc.). Unused equipment is automatically stockpiled in Your main HQ unit and then it is distributed to the frontlines, where it is needed. You can even force Your units to redistribute some equipment back to the HQ resource pool and then back to other units that needs that equipment…

Decisive Campaigns Series I recommend very warmly this turn based little gem strategy game at operational level with a very good intuitive interface&gameplay mechanics not overly convoluted , for those who want a greater challenge&have free time to spend - and also a more detailed historical background regarding the units in combat - the description on the game page is very accurate from my POV - 10/10 ! Out of the trilogy i enjoyed the most this title because it allows greater…

I play all the VR Design games. Adv Tactics is good, DC Warsaw is better, DC CB is best. Can't wait for DC3 Barbarossa. 2026 update: now have Barbarossa and Ardennes. Case Blue still the best, however only a few hours into Ardennes so we will see.

There’s a hex strategy game for this exact thing called Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa, where you play as the Germans invading the USSR in WWII and if you don’t follow ideological directives from Nazi leadership to do war crimes you can get fired and the game ends.

Very Challenging game, took me a few tries on before I got any Major Victories. Historically accurate simulation of Operation "Blau" from both the German and Soviet perspective of the 1942-43 campaign in Southern Russia. Well worth the money spent on the game.

Badly designed game that on its face looks appealing, but when you get in the meat of the mechanics of the game is deeply flawed on many levels. For a quick example, in the Operation Uranus scenario against another very seasoned human opponent, as the German player I was able to leave Stalingrad and then defeat the Russians along the entire line. Completely unrealistic. Don't buy this game. There are much better games on the divisional/regimental level, one being Gary Grigsby's War in the…

Well i have played this one for about 50 hours so far, and for the most part i do rather like it. Its cleverly thought out and it makes you think about your every move. nice one team. however there are a few things that niggle. not least of all is that i find it damn near impossibe to beat. Even on easy, i still havent managed to get passed the second scenario on time. Frustrating as that is though, it does leave me wanting to try again , and so i guess in that sense , its very good…

I'm still getting into this game, but it seems like Vic took everything great about DC and upped the ante. It has all the operational fun with new strategic considerations. Dictators set objectives, allies and command can paralyze, reinforcements and replacements come in based on perceived importance of the front, etc. This is all the fun of DC1, but with a new strategic aspect and longer term considerations. Do I really want to bash Wiking through that river, or should I let them rest and…

One of the best operational wargames out there. I have only played the Uranus scenario so far but the Soviet A.I is clearly much improved to DC1 which couldn´t handle the invasion of France and lowlands. The A.I take every opportunity to make a breakthrough in your lines and pour units through it and are good at closing gaps you open. It is however quite easy to lure into traps. So if it break through your lines you could allow it to pour through and it is not that good to secure its flanks so…

There is no undo button for when you inadvertently move a unit by mistake, because you forgot to exit to unit's move segment. Now if and when the unit discovers an enemy unit then all bets are off your stuck. But until there is an undo button added this game gets a thumbs down.

Along with DC: Warsaw to Paris (my favorite) and DC: Barbarossa, this is one of the most under appreciated Operational war games for the PC. Highly recommend. Not hard to learn, but some of the mechanics are not typical and worth browsing the manual.

This is an excellent, innovative wargame. The combat is traditional wargame hex and counter style. You deal with the political problems of Axis minor allies, manage the chain of command, assign replacements, create and disband units and use the special abilities of your leaders to best effect, while ensuring that you don't run out of fuel. Logistics is well done, if not as developed as in the sequel to this wargame, Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa (also highly recommended). The full campaign…

I found this game extremely frustrating. I am an experienced wargamer, having played Afirka Corps, Stalingrad and other Avalon Hill titles back in the 1960s, then numerous games since then, including the SSI computer and board games. I thought I fought a well thought out campaign and still my army bled to death before I could crack the Soviet line. No chance of getting to Stalingrad, much less the Caususes, with my eviscerated units. Good idea, just not well executed in my opinion.

I've been invading the USSR since the cardboard SSI games. I jumped into the full scenario of Case Blue. First try: mid-August, trench warfare not far from starting line, Panzers decimated and hopelessly bogged down. Second try: mid-August, deeper in, but hopelessly stalled. Third try: 1st week of September, still haven't taken Rostov, but smashed Soviet right (north) flank and moving freely while desperately shoving slow-moving infantry into the ever-growing gap. The UI is…

A fantastic WWII strategic simulator in which you move your troops on a hex-based map, as is the norm in serious wargames. Troops/divisions/regiments are visualized as boxes with a simple (NATO preferably) unit counter on it. It's important to memorize the different designations as you'll spend the majority of your time looking at the map from above, obviously. And the map is huge. It's easy to spend an hour per turn, but it's not confusing. I knew exactly what I was doing as the Axis, and…

The right level of complexity for wargammers looking a deeper military experience of WW2 then Hearts of Iron. But, for someone not willing to deal with the complexities of managing Divison, Corps and Army management while also handling a gigantic front with 100s of units, then I would try Hearts of Iron or simpler wargames first. This game is clunky, awkward and takes a lot of time to finish a campaign, it plays more like a board game than video game. BUT, it is so fanastically rewarding when…

Excellent wargame. Challenging in the right way, with all major elements (logistics, positioning, airpower etc.) without micromanagement. Just finished the grand campaign with the Germans and it's a very rewarding sensation indeed. I can only recommend the decisive campaign series and personally I've liked Case Blue better than Barbarossa. Definitly worth it for us armchair generals.

This game and the others like it in the series are real gems for wargamers both computer wargamers and those that used to play board game style wargames from Avalon Hill, SPI, GDW, and other classic wargaming companies. The amount of detail and historical data the game encompasses is thrilling. As an exampe, you don't just have a an armored unit. You get an armored unit that is broken down by the type of equipment it has, its morale, training supplies and so much more. You have can interact…

As far as I can tell this game is meticulously researched and includes a mass of detail about individual units. However, the game play requires a massive repetition of the same key strokes which makes the game very dull and repetitive. The elements of the game that provide historical and military detail are very complex and, I confess I do not understand most of the game rules. The result is that even of easy settings and having tried playing on both sides I batter away with little success and…

I played Shadow Empire, then DC: Barbarossa (great fun!), and then this. This is the oldest of the three, and it shows.. but the engine is still great for a wargame, and this includes the various 1942-1943 scenarios so there is variety. Definitely a thumbs up if you're interested in revisiting the eventual disaster that was Fall Blau.

Pretty good. You might like it if you are interested in this specific campaign. It is not quite as good as the Barbarossa version. It is not reasonable to expect a competitive game against an AI and that is true here (played as Russians against German AI and eventually Germans were left just holding Odessa!). There are so many units there is probably too much micro-management. Map and units are very good. Interface is intuitive and easy to pick up. Liked the card play although it seems to…

Haven't played this one as much as Blitzkrieg or Barbarossa as it's a bit more in depth than those two and focuses on a part of the war I find less interesting, I would class this as a mini monster. It has PBEM++ which is great, a feature sorely missing in Blitzkrieg and the latest DC game Ardennes. In any case, from the short time I've played this, I can say I would 100% recommend it, and with more time played it's likely I will consider this a masterpiece like the other DC games

Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue is a well-made and fun game. It hits nicely at the operational level, between tactical and strategic for those wanting to war game at that level. There is just enough detail to give players the ability to do analysis, but is not overwhelming. Enough is abstracted, or can be somewhat ignored, if players want to focus on fighting the battles and not get bogged down administratively.

Bought the game a long while back but just now getting into it. Easy to learn the basics and as others a have commented , it is intuitive. The game has great depth and historical accuracy. Units are historical so you are not dealing with counters that are "abstract", The game does require a lot of clicking but the payoff is a stimulating rewarding game.
