Broken Sword 3 - the Sleeping Dragon (2003)

Adventure

Developer Revolution Software Ltd

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon is an adventure game released on Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 in November 2003. It is the third installment in the Broken Sword series, released six years after the previous instalment, The Smoking Mirror. If you're old enough to have played this when it first came out, you'll remember what a terrible disappointment it was after the terrific, all-time classic first two Broken Sword games. To this day, you just have to say "box pushing puzzles" to an old-time adventure game fan, and they will shudder in revulsion and know exactly what you're talking about. I hadn't played this in something like 20 years but happened to pick it up in a super cheap bundle of all the BS games on Fanatical and…

With the exception of Grim Fandago, there is a special kind of Hell for the game designers who made 3D Adventure Games back in the early days, when 3D art was so horrible and atrocious that even Pixels were more realistic. In that special Hell there is even a more special torturing chamber for the people who took Classic Point & Click Adventures and turned them into Action Adventures where you have to MOVE through atrocious 3D graphics using WASD or the Cursor pad and using the elements of said…

One of my all time favorite comfort games. If a game was a lazy summer day, it would be this one. Every time I load it up I'm back at my old house with a breeze blowing through the open window, my dad is still alive, and the world still seems okay.

First 2 games are nice, nothing special, but still pleasant. After two great point-and-click adventures, moving to 3D and try to recreate some "Lara Croft" or "Syberia" atmospere and gameplay really killed the game. This is a non-point & click Broken Sword game! Game is buggy, the controls are awful and the camera's point of view is extremely frustrating... I've been trying to complete this game since April of 2022 and still haven't mustered the courage to do so... Thank God it doesn't have…

Not nearly as bad as projected by a lot of people. Really the only big fail is the 3D and Keyboard, which does have a massive impact in a negative way. But the story, the puzzles and the characters are all in line from what I expect from the Broken Sword series.

Did games in the early 2000 had no idea of auto-save? Well ... maybe not. Did somone said this game is a point&click adventure? Whoever said that, they were wrong, because there is no use of a mouse in this game and therefore there is no point and no click. So you have to control the game by keyboard only. Accepted that and tried really hard on getting used to it because I do really like the other parts of Baphomet's Curse / Broken Sword ... so I really wanted to play all parts. I got used…

The first two Broken Sword games are timeless classics, and nowadays it's clear as day that Revolution Software could have kept making those 2D masterpieces, and the fans would have kept buying them until the end of time. However, technology at the time was advancing, and the team wanted to switch to 3D, and so, after 6 years, Broken Sword 2 finally received a sequel. At the time of its release, critics praised the game, but how does it hold up now? For starters, the game does look impressive…

I understand 3D was where it was at back then but, man, this game is painful. I'm very fond of Broken Sword, and I love a point and click, but I can't stand to play this 3D abomination for more than like five minutes at a time. After the first two great games which were classic 2D point&click adventures, this sequel is a huge disappointment. The story is okay, the voice acting decent, the graphics fine. However, the absolutely awfui and unintuitive controls, horrible forced angles, and tedious "move boxes around" puzzles are a joke. There are almost no puzzles you need to combine items for or any dialogue puzzles or *anything* remotely different from "move this box from A to B." The stealth sections were quite…

The game has it's moments, but this is no longer a point and click adventure game. It has morphed into some kind of poor attempt of a Tomb Raider style game and you'll spend more time pushing boxes around than solving puzzles.

The first time I played this game I bounced off it so hard. But coming back to it I actually enjoyed it. In spite of its new look I think it's aged so well, there's parts I genuinely could see the cartoon style in 3D. There's an over fondness of box pushing which is the games major flaw but aside from that it's a great story, a great conclusion to the first game as off the rails as it is. Nico as always is resigned to a reluctant hapless damsel and deserves better though. This game is…

Reviewed on Steam Deck I recently completed a playthrough on Broken Sword Reforged, a remake of the original 2D game. The first and second games were previously remastered, of course, but unfortunately this game has been allowed to fester like an unloved red-headed step child kept in the basement under the stairs while works continues on the 6th game in the series. Which is a shame since there is a lot to love here — Broken Sword 3 received a 9/10 from the prestigious EDGE magazine, I’ll have…

The departure from point & click to be 3D and more interactive has this sitting with mixed reviews. At times I enjoyed it, it's certainly an adventure and not as bad as one might think, but i put it down before finishing and like everyone else just wished it played like the first 2 games in the series. It was such a departure that I won't even try the 4th one (looks to be done in the same style). The series appear to have returned to their point & click roots with Broken Sword 5 so I'm…

The Sleeping Dragon is definitely a niche title that won't (and hasn't) appealed to everyone, but I got engrossed in it and would recommend it. If I were to try to categorise it, I'd sum it up as...wait, Broken Sword meets Resi? Yes, really, the old point-and-click style of games has moved to a Resident Evil-like tank control system, where you move George or Nico around the screen using not the mouse but the arrow keys, and you use your inventory with WASD. This reconfiguration was…

It starts out strong, but suffers from a terribly disjointed story that ends in the last 30 minutes with a twist villain that makes no sense if you played the first game. The change from point and click to keyboard controls making movement and puzzle solving a chore, combined with a product of its time camera which shifts perspective at the most inconvenient times, makes this title overall not one I can recommend. If you feel the need to know how the story continues, look up the cutscenes when…

This game is a disaster. The graphics are awful and painfully slow, even though I'm running it on a modern computer. And the controls just plain suck. They don't let you use a mouse, which defeats the whole purpose of a point and click adventure game. Only play this game if you don't like fun and really want to be frustrated.

Reviewing games I played a long time ago: Ok... Broken Sword 3. Anyone who remembers when this was released knows how devisive this game was. It came out straight into the eye of the hurricane, during a time when classic adventure games were dying and developers were desperately trying to switch to 3D, direct input controls and dumbed down mechanics. This was was a gigantic disapointment, everything was subpar compared to the 2 previous games. I still dread the "push boxes puzzles". So, I…

Good part : The characters, if you're a fan of the Broken Sword game, clearly reuniting with George & Nico is a plus nostalgia-wise. Graphics are kinda alright for 2003 game especially surprisingly well for on 2560x1440 resolution Some good ideas here and there, but the execution is not good. Bad : CONTROLS : - Movement controls are only with the keyboard, you can forget the mouse... ironical for a "Point & Click". Boring game in the Broken Sword series There are games which I may like to return to it frequently, There are also boring games which takes me 2-3 months to return to it. This game is one of them. Story This game returns to the Templar storyline which happened in the first game. Once again, our heroes George Stobbart and Nico Collard return but the voice cast is changed a lot. Lost their way with this game, the pressure to go 3D completely ruined what made the series special. It feels like a broken Sword knockoff, with sterile, blocky environments that are completely lacking in detail, character, and atmosphere. The game looks like it’s permanently stuck in potato mode, which is such a far cry from the beautiful art style of the og 1-2 games—if your coming from remasters its a proper shock. The franchise was never great on puzzles, but this one dropped the ball by substituting most of them with so many banal crate shoving rooms, "action" scenes, "platforming" and terrible stealth sequences. Because, of course, 2003, what else was there to do for point & click adventures than to turn into ugly 3D action games with poor controls? Though to be fair, this one doesn't look and play all that badly. Had it had some more actual puzzles, it could've been a solid entry, but, well, it…

This game is good... if you like pushing boxes around. Almost all of the puzzles in the game involve George or Nico grabbing various cube-shaped boxes with different skins (crates, slabs of granite, even a washing machine) and sliding them to stack and be able to climb and enter (or reveal) the next area. Had a problem at the beginning using the fire extinguisher to break the airplane window. The cog icon didn't appear when using the page direction keys. You have to press 'fn' at the same time and the cogs will appear. Took a very long time to figure this out. I looked it up and lots of people gave up on the game apparently because of this. Apart from this the game was a good throwback to many years ago playing the Broken Sword games with friends.

No idea why they decided to go away from what worked so well in the first 2 games to jump on trying to make it more "3D" to fit in with other games at the time but they butchered this game, to me this is unplayable, sucks I have to avoid one of the games in the series, hoping 4 isn't the same. Ok, I have a love/hate relationship with this game. This third installment of the Broken Sword series takes us into another mystery, and this time it follows part of the main story from the first game, which includes the Templars. As usual, everything starts with an item that is more than it seems, and from that point on George and Nicole are pushed together into the story. One of the things I like about this game is the story and how it answers some of the questions left from the first game.…

I can appreciate that the first problem solve is opening up a beer to wake up a downed pilot. Lipsync mostly exists, which I guess is an improvement to the limitations of the pixel 2D predecessors. I liked this game. It didn't knock my sock off but I had a good time. Whilst it's the 3rd game in the Broken Sword series it's very different control wise with the jump from 2D to 3D - it's a little jank but something I got used to as time went on (if you've played the earlier Telltale games like Wallace and Gromit or Back to the Future it feels a little like that). This is probably one of those games where you'd want an option between the binary "Yes" and "No" to be "hmmm.....". THE BAD The move to three-dimensional graphics makes the gameplay feel pretty awkward; the (semi-)fixed camera angles only make that worse, and make it difficult to see the important things in each scene, like what to collect, or where to go.
