What people are saying
A well-crafted hidden object game with a strong story and villain, but marred by tedious backtracking and some bugs.
Players widely praise the game's story, atmosphere, and villain. Many highlight the engaging psychological thriller plot and the memorable antagonist, with one calling him 'awesome' and another noting he 'somewhat reminds me Joker'. [1][7][8]
The gameplay receives mixed feedback. While puzzles and hidden object scenes are often described as clever and well-designed, several players criticize the excessive backtracking and lack of fast travel. Some also report game-breaking bugs that prevent completion. [4][12][14][26][33]

A journalist named Same Wilde wrote about this case and discovered that the person who's been kidnapping those people only targeting the beautiful young ones. This article irritated the maniac who in result kidnapped the journalist fiance. Sam then realized his biggest mistake is using his real name when he wrote the article, this made it very easy for the kidnapper to target him. Coming to Goldvale Manor was the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short version: 88% A lightweight psychological thriller– with a good story and good antagonist– that takes the form of a decent hidden object puzzle game. Long version: Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome follows the story of an investigative journalist trying to save his girlfriend, as he slowly progresses through the mansion of a narcissistic serial killer, solving puzzles and collecting items along the way. During his trials he is often contacted by the antagonist: an excellently…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent hidden object puzzle game. Highly recommended for HOG and adventure game fans. + The premise -- you're trapped in a mansion with a serial killer who's left puzzles and clues to toy with you -- justifies the "why does everything have an arbitrary puzzle lock" problem that plagues most HOGs. + Beautiful art with many different settings. + Great soundtrack to set the mood. + Well-designed hidden object scenes. + Voice acting that really brings the villain to life. He's sometimes a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the better examples of a hidden object game, with lots of clever puzzles, high quality art and fun/fair object scenes, though it also suffers from several flaws that hold it back from becoming an unconditional classic. Once again, you'll find yourself playing as a protagonist out to rescue a loved one from the clutches of an evil mad man as you rummage through his personal space in a vast, unsettling mansion. But while the player character is something of a smug, charmless git,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Utterly bad Hidden Object game. The main issue is that the map system tells you that in this or that room is a point of interest or that there is something unsolved. That doesn't mean that there is something to do there yet though. On top of that it has no fast travel which makes you run around in circles. The puzzles are crap as well. For instance a "mirror this image" which consists of 60 small parts or so. Boring. Or a picture puzzle with 10x10 tiles that are pretty small so it's hard to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll add my voice to the "good game" crowd. I'll admit that I skipped some of the puzzles - either I'd come across the same ones before and knew I wasn't very good, or they were too complex for my poor tired brain. But they also weren't just the "same old, same old" puzzles that are in other HOGs. This felt longer than other HOGs I've played through a combination of factors. Definitely worth the money! The voice acting for the villain was very good, though Oscar could be a little…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beware: Game breaking bugs that prohibit you from finishing the game. Dig a bit online, you will notice some recurring bugs that are happening to multiple players. Basically the game crashes and an item necessary for a puzzle ends up missing from the inventory. The crashes tend to appear towards the end of the game, and prohibit you from ever finishing it. Even worse, this company is not interested in fixing the game and offers no appropriate technical support. This is the type of shovelware…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game, good voice acting, interesting story, but horrible characters and endless walking around because there is no quick-travel. There are dozens of rooms - and often you need to go from the last one back to the first and again. With an elevator in the middle so you lose even more time watching at the screen. The villain is a sadistic monster, and the (unwilling) hero seems to be an unsympathetic jerk. Whenever you find notes about the killers history, no matter what it describes,…

You're digging where you're not supposed to. If you want to see her alive, come to the Goldvale Manor. Say nothing to anyone. If I see even one sign of the authorities, your beloved will be another work of art in my collection " Fearing the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a difficult game to rate, but overall, there were too many things I didn't like, so I can't recommend it. The story is somewhat standard for a HOG -- a loved one is kidnapped -- though it's definitely psychologically "darker" than others. The visuals were good, despite it being an older game, and the audio was good as well. I particularly enjoyed the hidden object scenes which were more difficult than other HOGs I've played, but still fair (I didn't notice any incorrectly-labeled…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty neat hidden object game. Even though the plot seemed like a cliche serial killer song it made me curious about the murderer. Why is he doing this? What was driving him mad? Should I join him? Nice art and atmosphere, lovable killer and brilliant bonus art. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=779523567
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Suprisingly good. I'm played every game of Sinister Stories and this one is my favourite. Probably the reason is awesome villain. He somewhat reminds me Joker, but Sam is not Batman, he is just a journalist. Interriors are beautiful, puzzles are fun, music is not anoying and acting is gorgeous. 10/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Run of the mill HOG, boring story
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very well-done game with a combination of point-and-click adventure aspects and hidden object/puzzles. Compared to some, this game focuses more on the puzzles and less on HO scenes. The story was engagingly creepy and while not entirely original, was entertaining. The back story was fairly formulaic but as it's fed to the player in small bits, via diary entries mostly, the somewhat predictable history of the villain did not detract from the story. What helped this is that the game didn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Typical point and click scrambled pictures shovelware
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played this game twice now, just to be sure. It cannot be completed as there is always a piece missing at the end and no way to get it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7.1/10 - Better Point & Click than most I have played and reviewed several Point and Click games. This game is better than most! The graphics and story are pretty good. Voice acting adds a nice touch. The puzzles and item hunts are well done, but the routes you have to take are too much. Sometimes you have to walk down 15x to grab an item, then back up 9x to use it.. etc.. So make sure that kind of stuff doesn't bother you. It did bother me, but not enough to vote down. I didn't like the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A particularly good Hidden Object/Adventure game - this one hits a happy balance of unfolding story, wandering exploration, and doors locked with baroque mechanisms all missing pieces which are hidden in unlikely places. Dorian Gray gives us an entertaining villain, always a few steps ahead of our plucky hero and gloating at us with voluble, literate glee. Oscar, the demented masked mastermind, is unusually coherent and interesting for the genre. The Hidden Object scenes are nicely thematic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am really enjoying the game and I agree with everything Gamezebo had to say about it. The artwork and voice overs are very well done and it is a very spooky type vibe. So whats not to like? Well for me some of the puzzles are hit and mostly a miss. I found most of them so far to be tedious and just time wasters. The HOG are well done if a little hard to see. The story is very well done. However you have to travel a lot between rooms and there is no fast travel although there is a map of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Good plot Great Graphics for the genre Suitably creepy music Solid voice acting Some challenging puzzles Excellent Bonus chapter No bugs or crashes (windows 7) Cons: Some easy/tedious puzzles
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, this guy sure loves to hear himself talk. Lol. I played the other Brink of Consciousness first and loved it, so I tried this one out. It... It wasn't as grand as the other one, but it had its charm. This H.O.G. is done slightly differently from other standard ones. You *really* gotta remember where you can shove something into. I took a break for two days to play a different game and had to rely on my subconsciousness to remind me of things.. XD Sure there are "map hints"... But…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great game in many ways, but it's showing its age and the gameplay can be quite tedious. If you play this type of game frequently, you're likely to find it a drag. Pros - Good story and effective atmosphere (creeped me out!) - Voice acting is very good (rare in this genre) - Complete in-game guide included Cons - No fast travel - Map is large and complex and you'll struggle to remember the way to the room you need - Hints only indicate whether there's something in the current location,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are plenty of other reviews with better depth than mine, but I just want to toss a quick Positive this game's way. The Good: -The story is excellent for a casual game! Suspenseful psychological horror good enough to have been a movie. This is my biggest reason for bothering to write a quick review. Bonus chapter added a great twist too. -The villain's voice actor is wonderful. -It looks pretty great for its age. Bugged out and wouldn't let me select widescreen, but I don't feel like much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The voice acting was top-notch and the atmosphere/story well done. Enough to carry the game alone. The navigation is a bit weird and hidden object scenes reappear but I managed okay. Pity the hint system doesn't help you figure out where to go and the map is surprisingly vague (but good for those who don't want to just be told what to do),
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels like this game drags on. The villain constantly talks whenever you make even a little bit of progress and it becomes quite annoying. I stopped playing it for a while and then came back to it just so I can complete it and uninstall it. It's not a bad game, but it really does drag on and after awhile, it no longer feels fun, but rather tedious to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the better hidden object games with clever puzzles and detailed object scenes. But it's best feature is the tense and dramatic story of the hunt for a serial killer that comes to it's unexpected conclusion in the bonus chapter. Excellent voice acting, music and effects draw you into the story without effort and make you very eager to explore the mind of the killer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This pleasantly surprised me despite not being all that picky about HOGs! Like utterly pleased. I could tell the developers really loved the game they were making. PROS: > Really really lovely and detailed visual backgrounds! The way the late afternoon sun hits the walls and by god, the greenhouse area and veranda were so lovely. I loved the bathroom with the serpent theme as well. And...in a dark way, the way the ermm, 'artworks' are positioned. I loved the look of most puzzles too! >…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Garbage. Graphics, gameplay, writing. Garbage all around. The game [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU987SMxb5I]starts with Protagonist Reporter watching a 50's (local?) TV broadcast talking about a serial killer terrorizing the city, with approximately 40 (not actually stated in the report because that would sound bloody stupid - I'm estimating based on the number of bodies you discover) young attractive people disappearing over the past few months. The "only clue to what is happening is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →hidden objects are easier to find but puzzles are little bit difficult or lengthy overall good game..would recommend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Initially I thought I wouldn't enjoy this game very much, but the longer I played the more I ended up liking it! It has its strengths and weaknesses as any other game does, and I recommend it for the various reasons listed below. In short, if you want to play a hidden object game (HOG) that offers that little bit extra, this game is worth your time and money. At it's current retail price of £6.99 you get a fair amount of game for those pennies! The Good I thought in terms of plot, this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good casual point-and-click adventure with a few hidden-object scenes and many puzzles, some quite difficult. The story, though quite short, is more complex and better thought out than most games in this genre. The villain is almost believable and well conceptualized. The developers did a great job in creating a total atmosphere -- not quite horror, but definitely disturbing -- through the use of subtle sound effects. Finally, the voice acting (at least in English) was superb! Easily the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Took about 4 hours to complete. I liked it. The story was great and the puzzles were challenging. Even spooked me a couple times. lol I loved how it ended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not the greatest hidden object game. The world is huge, confusing and the map is not very helpful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved it. The voice acting was very good. Enjoyed the puzzles too they were unique and haven't seen them in many HOG:s. Only thing I didn't like about the game was no fast travel map but its an older game so I let it slide. Also would love trading cards for this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Last time i played scary hidden objects when i was 10th! And i never find games so interesting after that, usually my sister and i skipped the puzzles. But we managed to finish them in this game. Amazing puzzle & story. Too much places? Could be confusing at times, but this deserve more!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game made me fall in love with this genre of games. I couldn’t stop playing it. I wanted to know how the story ended! This could have been a great movie. I loved it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is very engaging for a hidden object game. The art is lovely even though it's a horror game. There were a few puzzles that had me really stuck, so I skipped past them because I really wanted to know the story. And enjoyable 4 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →holy moly what a great HOG. perfect story and perfect twisted ending. pros. great story twisted real ending (bonus story) bonus story ok gameplay time (around 3 hours for the main story and 50 minutes for the bonus story) kinda difficult puzzles a bit creepy nice voice acting commenting on a lot of the stuff you do cons. i had one bug with the tutorial where one tip didn't show up in the first time i opened an HO scene, but showed up at the second time i did not like the fact that while the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice clear graphics. Tasks little confusing and have to move back lots to do them. You can only do task after you get hint even when you know already what to do. Lots of little hard english so maybe I did not understand all. Very good story and surprising end! Only bad thing there that you can't play ending again to see if there is different one if you do some things other way and you would need play complete game again from start.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best hidden object, point and click game that I have played on steam. It has a very creepy storyline and some new puzzles. I actually had to skip two because I just couldn't work them out. I got around 6hrs play including the bonus chapter. The characters mouths moved, and the extras such as moaning and hyperventilating made this game exciting. There are not that many hidden object scenes, but they were good with some puzzles within them. The only thing I didn't like was that there…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dorian Gray is a casual HOG with a very long gameplay. You are a journalist, Sam, who works on a story about missing people. Unfortunately, Sam's girl friend becomes the next victim and the journey begins. The story is solid and looong enough to satisfy anybody. Audiovisual qualilty is good. The minigames are nonrecurring and HOG scenes good. You don't need to pixelhunt. I've finished the main game in 5 hours, and spent a half for the bonus chapter. Yes, we have a bonus chapter. The only thing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game very much. Having a crazy murderer trick you with traps actually makes it easier for me to accept the premise of finding hacksaws baked inside cakes or whatever crazy shenanigans these kind of games come up with. My only concern is for the insane amount of backtracking. For the love of cheese, if I have to go back to the beginning of the game to do something, at least let me teleport.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyed the game and the story line. Would recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good hidden object game with a nice variety of puzzles. More aimed at adults as you are going after a mass murderer who has kidnapped your girlfriend and enjoys taunting you throughout the game. The only drawback is that when you select the map, you can't click on it to go directly to a location, you have to manually backtrack through previously visited rooms, which is a bit of a pain, but not a deal breaker.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only superficial has to do with Dorian Gray The story from Oscar Wilde was a critique about the hedonism, moral decline and decadence of the victorian age upper class in the empire. The Protagonist of the named story "The picture of Dorian Gray", has a portrait of himself that ages and takes the signs of his sins instead of him. Keeping Dorian Gray, vibrant, youthful and healthy, while the portrait ages, withers and disfigures... During the novell Dorian gray grows more and more restless and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely love this game and grew up on it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is one of the best HOGs seriously, yes it's pretty old now and is quite annoying to get fullscreen to work but the game makes up for it in its story and puzzles. Story There are reports of young people going missing over the last few weeks on the news. You play as Sam Wilde, an investigative journalist. who was supposed to go on a date with his girlfriend Anna. However, when Sam arrives at the meeting spot, Anna is nowhere to be seen, there is just her ring and a letter reading that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent little HOG.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good. Not really all that scary but it was fun. There's a built in guide if you get lost and you can skip any puzzle (like the train one). The hint mechanic only works if you're in the right room, so that can get annoying if you don't know what you're supposed to be doing. Bonus chapter is a nice, concise epilogue. Also, the pencil is on the picture frame.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →surprisingly well-made, with a really complex setting, and a very fun antagonist. the mansion DOES get a bit too big towards the end, especially since the map isn't super helpful, but i did have a very fun time with this
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would recommend this game, ending was a bit disappointing but otherwise very solid.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished! Some of the late-game puzzles were very confusing, though overall I enjoyed the game (and it does include a "skip" button for those tricky moments). Nice concept art in the "bonus" section too!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So glad I got this game to work, the puzzles and story were great and the villain interesting and fun. The bonus chapter ending not at all what I was expecting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a classic hidden object game. The amount of hidden object scenes to puzzles and point and click elements is pretty good. It also has a good story with an effective villain, which I cannot say for most hidden object games. The villain isn't hidden away from the player and only meetable at the last second: he appears in multiple locations and actually taunts the player, which is fun. The scenery is beautiful, but not overly stylized. Hidden objects and puzzles are not terribly hard and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →genuinely one of the coolest HOGs i've ever played
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent HOG to scratch the itch but buy it on sale. +I like both the game's regular ending and especially the bonus chapter ending. Nice twist. +Enjoyed the antagonist and his voice acting. Reminded me a little of Andrew Ryan from Bioshock. +Little details I hadn't seen in a HOG before like the main protagonist reacting to the weather outside. Another example is when you are searching a bookcase with your mouse and some books fall of for a "jump scare" as if it was the protagonist's actual…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome is a cool point-and-click hidden object game with a good story centered around a great villain, one of the best in this genre, with lots of voice acting. Besides that, gameplay is standard: explore, collect items, use them, solve puzzles. The map included here is a great addition, marking places with incomplete stuff, so you’re never lost too long. The hint system also helps. It lasts a few hours, and the collector edition includes stuff like a short…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More repetitive than the Lonely Hearts one, Puzzles seem forced instead of complicated just make you do constant clicking in order to pad game time as well as the constant "cut scenes" from having to move back and forth through the same areas such as having to use the elevator several times and having to watch every time it goes up or down. Where the game as a whole is alright and deserving of a play through the cost of $10 is insane for only a handful of hidden object puzzles and having to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nicely put together HOG game. No crazy, unsolveable puzzles. While there is some backtracking at least they provide a map that shows areas where you still need to accomplish things. I completed it in a 4 hour sitting without using any guides. I did skip a puzzle or two though. It was pretty heavy on the "make sure these things are all in the correct pattern" puzzles. I would recommend it when it goes on sale or is part of a reasonably priced bundle. Be sure to play the bonus chapter.
