Age of Fear 3: The Legend
Developer Leslaw Sliwko
Play as either Nairi, an imprisoned Dryad fighting for her freedom, or Gilrock, a drunken Dwarven Lord on a quest to restore his family's honour (or just to kick some arse!). The Age of Fear series is a deep and complex turn-based strategy that fuses a tabletop wargame with RPG elements. From the Steam store page

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel bad not recommending this game. It's not careless or disrespectful of the audience. There's a lot of value with 2 branching campaigns. Unit variety is nice, upgrade options for units (who stay with you mission to mission) is varied and interesting. The story itself is not well written but it is original as are the characters. It's an indie game with basic production value, no animation and fairly bad art. But that's not why I'm not recommending it, I've played long enough to not care,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a little confused by Age of Fear's positive reception, though after doing some review digging I realised that nostalgia plays a large part. So this review is from the perspective of a modern gamer. I've never played a physical role playing game, nor did I own any console that came before the Gameboy Colour. If that describes you, you'll likely agree with this review. If not, take my recommendation with a grain of salt. Either way, this should be considered a neutral vote because there's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to give a thumbs up, but I do have some minor complaints. As such, I'm going to just list the negatives followed by a statement on why the thumbs up. 1. Price is too high for the game. I understand 'supporting indie developers' but the price here is just not jusitified for the content. Unfortunately, its a give and take type of relationship here, but I feel like they are taking more than they are giving. 2. Compared with previous titles, I found the story bland. Not that the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am the curator of 4x dads. I am a grown man with a family and play PC games as a hobby. I particularly enjoy 4x strategy, but I also like strategy RPGs. I want to take a moment and thank the developer for offering me a free copy of their game to review, albeit, it's not a favorable one. Keep in mind that I didn't play this game for too long. I am an adult with a full load, shift work and family. So if I am going to take the time to play a strategy RPG, it needs to do a couple of things,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game features two lengthy, challenging campaigns of scripted missions against numerous enemy units. In addition, multiplayer skirmish battles on a small number of maps (no randomized maps) are available on a LAN or against the AI; team rosters are customized before each match. There are a lot of units to choose from scattered across several races, with many interesting abilities to take advantage of during battle. Age of Fear 3 retains the gameplay of its predecessors: turn-based on maps…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I own every Age of Fear game from the 1st one. This 3rd Age of Fear is similar to the rest of the series but has more units and items and seems more refined, with more elaborate quests. The combat is radius and line of sight based, instead of hex or square based. This is probably more akin to tabletop wargames such as Warhammer 40K where you whip out a ruler and measure the distance your unit can move or shoot along with taking line of sight into consideration. I do like this system because…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another fine entry in the Age Of Fear series. I won't go into detail about the mechanics, as you can find that in numerous reviews for this and the last two titles. Safe to say, if you liked the last titles, you will like this one. In fact, if you like turn-based tactics with a touch of RPG, and you don't need fancy graphics, this is a safe bet. Instead, I'd like to point out the additions to the series: There is now an overland map in which you can pick multiple optional missions as well as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played a few turn-based strategy games, but after finishing the Age of Fear trilogy I intend to play a lot more – including any future Age of Fear games that should emerge. The tabletop-style maps are not fundamentally all that different from the grid-based battlefields of Fire Emblem and XCOM, but I personally got a warm fuzzy sensation from painstakingly positioning my troops where I thought they would be most effective – plus, the lack of a clearly-defined grid makes human error a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review - Age of Fear 3: The Legend RATING: 7.5 / 10 [ === Overview Age Of Fear 3 is a top-down 2D tactical RPG / Strategy game with management elements. In this title you will be in command of an army composed of many different units of your choosing, ranging from walking trees, to orcs, to undeads, to mercenaries: a lot of different fantasy characters and species are present and almost all are recruitable for your army. The game consists mainly of two separate modules, one is the map…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid gridless turn-based battle system with lots of units. Clearly the strong point of the game! Character progression, equipment, recruiting, reserves...Many strategic elements to manage your progression. AoF3 already offers two long campaigns but more is coming with many side missions. The difficulty levels allow from an almost casual game to an hardcore bloody struggle for survivor! The top down view used during battles is not the prettiest out there but the eye candy is replaced by…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you like strategic round based RPG its all in one game. Graphics beautiful, very detailed units, and backgrounds. Great Story, you can choose which path you follow, "good" or evil hire units, side quests, markets, weapon / armory upgrades, unit upgrades,..... magic items, legendary items a lot of stuff to make your heroes and goons stronger fighting the enemy hordes. A.i. is tough and will kill some of your units if you not play smart. you can choose difficulty if its to easy for you. you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Simple to understand but deep in strategy. I have been watching a lot of youtube clips of the first 2 lately and waited for this one to take the plunge to buy, happy I did.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game really doesn't deserve its reputation. It's ugly and clumsy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Easy to learn, hard to master, with a good story. I would like to see more of these games.

It doesn't matter whether they get injured or even die. The Story is from the Point of view of the bad Guys, while your Character is a Dryad, a Creature of Nature who has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! Really enjoying the depth of the RPG elements involved here. I'm currently playing the Nature side quest campaign. The story is acutally pretty good, and the way you get to build yor squad is nice also, get to add alot of toons quickly and get them leveled quickly to be ableto compete as the story moves along which is cool. Theres planty of items potions and the like also (and there acutally useable b4 you need to upgrade them again) Also you get 2 hero's not just 1 whick i think is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A quality, quirky, old school tactical combat game. Seems to have a bit more polish than AoF 1 & 2, and a good bit more content , though otherwise very similar. The big challenge with the grid free combat system is positioning your army so that you balance protecting vulnerable ranged units, while not keeping such a tight formation that you cripple maneuverability. It can take a few hours to learn well before it starts becomming fun. If you're not sure you'd enjoy the combat, you could…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is entertaining indie tactics game, most combat rules are inhereted from previous parts, but art is all new and much better. Good for couple days of fun, worth the price in my opinion.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Fear 3: The Legend is a turn-based tactical RPG built for players who appreciate complex combat systems, persistent armies, character progression, and meaningful consequences. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic RPG, fantastic series! A+++ for me as far as tactical RPGs go. Play the whole series, lose yourself in the countless hours of pure enjoyment. Hope this helps! Much love. <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very well excuited series of turn based TRPG's with pixel based movement. To be honest I was really put off by the series promotional art, and delayed buying this for a very long time, but found a much nicer game under the hood than I was expecting. Bascially you have a set of heros who can equip gear, and a set of generic troops who can't, but everyone has extensive exp development options, you put together a crew and rampage around the world in a series of fixed campaign missions which are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More Age of Fear! Quite a few improvements over AoF2 (from when I played it). The dryad campaign starts a bit slowly but a few missions in and I'm enjoying the tactical combat, army building and items. Also learnt that beer cures poison so that could be useful one day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't explain it. This game looks awful at first glance. Don't let that fool you. Sure, it looks like something a programmer would use as placeholder art, but it grows on you. And let's face it, if you didn't immediately put this game on your ignore list, you are like me, and don't worry much about that stuff. And for good reason! The combat is surprisingly in depth. The RPG system of leveling up your heroes and units are far superior to many AAA games out there. The campaign is quite open…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a great game, and a great series. This is exactly the kind of turn based Tactical RPG that lovers of the genre should consider a must-have. It plays like a short D&D campaign complete with levelling up and equipment upgrades. I found this filled the void after Darkest Dungeon and Battle Brothers. Great job Dev's!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a big fan of this series and AOF3 did not disappoint. The mechanics will be familiar to anyone who's played the previous games, but it's solid and enjoyable. It's not grand strategy but an uncomplicated, small scale battle system that often stacks the odds against you, but doesn't feel cheap and provides a lot of satisfying payoffs. The game has two campaigns and both have the charm that again will not surprise fans of the series. There is a lot of well written banter between characters.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played and enjoyed Age of Fear Two, so I decided to buy the pack. I absolutely love AOF3 the map and side quests are a wonderful addition, but what I really love is the added shopping ability. I play with equip items on units, I gotta say I probably will have to up my difficulty from normal as my army was rather op fully geared out. (Plus The dryad path has some very expendable units which make life easy) Started Dwarf a touch back going to go through with that path now! =D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very complete, turn based, table-top RPG experience. A good storyline, and a pleasant: "easy to learn hard to master" experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game. Just as good as all the others. As good as Civ in holding my attention all the way thru, and that is very rare for me. Played it all. Played at the hard level. And then was able to win at the impossible level. Just a great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I might not have bothered with a review since I need to be either incredibly impressed or massively wound up by a game to do it, but some dwarves asked me to. I'm not kidding. I finished the first expansion (which was dirt cheap, short, well made and pretty fun overall) and then my little dwarfy soldiers had a conversation where they talked about how reviews help indie games and asked me to post one. Normally this would really annoy me, but considering how much time I've put into the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know why I put off getting this game. It scratches all my itches: strategy, RP, tactics, fantasy. Glad I finally gave it a go. It's a lot of fun and I'm enjoying tinkering with different party combinations. Should give many hours of enjoyment.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply put I had to refund due to the lack of support for high resolution. I really try hard to solve those issue for my first hour in the game. I think the problem is the fact this game run on JAVA. I mean the game itself looks awesome but the fact it was made on JAVA is just a let down. One I was able to resolve some issue with the game then I tried it and it was just to slow and choppy. Every bit of animation was stuttering and so on. One of the solution could be to run the game in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a great game, between leveling characters, equiping them, aquiring rarer creatures for your team, and then fighting through numerous chllenges.. this game had a remarkable amount of depth.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unexpectedly great tbs+rpg hybrid
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting Game. Have played the series for years and the games are always evolving. The developers are friendly and very helpful. There are a few stereotypes that I could do without but I have had alot of fun playing all 3 games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game during a sale and sat on it for way longer than I should have. What can I say, the graphics and presentation sort of put it the "I'll get to it when I get to it" pile. Well, I finally got to it and I had a great time! 🏆 And funnily enough, the game has only gotten better with age. 👨🍳🤏 That's because the excellent developers "backport" innovations from others in the series to their games, so you get to enjoy the latest and greatest when you play. They really are great --…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good games and I played for 60+ hours now in this series. ThoughI have some feelings and suggestions: First I go with some defaults and potential improvement in my opinion. 1. Difference race is not very well balanced. 1.1 Death power is too OP in general because the catapult of death is the only accessible one to capture, and super OP and can be resurrected. In late game you can even set up a catapult legion. Also. a legion of Lich is also OP because they can resurrect each other.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The true attraction of this game and the whole series, is that it is being constantly upgraded and improved, including major changes and additions! Which makes Age of Fear exciting to own and play...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played the game for 15 hours and experienced at least 10 occasions where the game has locked up. Every time the freeze occured during a battle loading scene. This probalem may be related to my 5 year old computer, but regardless, I'm moving on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unpretentious well made game. Don´t buy it for the graphics, they are nothing special. But if you like a deep strategic turn based game this is a very solid option.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought the game on sale on a whim. This game (and probably the series) is outstanding. It is pretty deep with your options and team compositions. It could be compared to games like Wesnoth, but with more depth. If you can get over the graphics it's pretty outstanding. What makes me excited about the series is that there is some interesting room for multiplayer advances. This has the sort of fleshed out base of something like warhammer that can go down many paths. Nice job devs!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My main beef is advertising a level editor as if it was an app included in the program. All I wanted to do was tweak some unit stats and I failed to - and yes there definitely is packing and unpacking of files according to the company's modding PDF. There is no other way to access them, according to the docs. Again, the lack of Workshop uploads tells the story. I have many, many games where the xml's and csv's are right there for an idiot like me to mod. And there is no mention of a "level…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The free game is rather enjoyable, it seemed that the developer was nice and at first they were helpful but the moment things seemed a little sus, not even significantly but only a little as i've been playing this game for years, off the developer immediately jumps to accusing me of being a bad person and quickly decides I need to just go away. If you can get the game at a significant discount than maybe its worth it but otherwise I'd suggest just sticking to the free version. *8/26/2022…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →AGE OF FEAR: THE LEGEND + THE ELEMENTALIST The third game of this turn based, RPG, strategy series with two further campaigns and factions: forest folk and the stubborn dwarves. The forest folk campaign is pretty good, with a lot of funny moments because one of your heroes is a Dryad, a nature-lover character, while the other is a Drider, an evil unit full of violence. The story is related in a very interesting way: the bad guy reading letters reporting the events. Second best story, just…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game. Try to play it hardcore (not part of the game mechanics and it is a serious challenge) there are lots of options to build gnarly combinations and the feel of the game is light-hearted and entertaining.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game is quite enjoyable, can be played at your own pace, and has a decent story to it so far from my experience of it. I do recommend to those who enjoy a good turn based strategic gameplay
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! The story is fun to play through and its ver satisfing to run through the random fights trying to expand your party through bribe, enslave, and the command spells. Saving up for the powerful units you'll see in fights down the road is worth it and it makes for some nice challenges on the harder difficulties. It's one of my favorite indie games and it has some great modding potential. I think the modding system here is easier to use than the GM mode you can find in Divinity 2:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, good mechanics make for deep interesting tactics...It's not the easiest of games but to me that only means I'll be playing this for a while....
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive now played all three age of fears and I have to say they rock. Pretty slow to begin with, but overall very enjoyable. The dwarf campaign of age of fear 3 was particularly good and amusing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little game with nice combat. Good to pend a few minutes or hours. (and also asked nicely to give a tumbs up:P)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An improvement on the last 2 games (each game is getting better than the last). Storytelling is getting much better. Different armies and more choices in this game. I'd recommend playing this series if you like old school turn-based tactical RPGs. Hope the dev keeps making more! 1 Request: I would like the dev to make injuries on the army management screen more obvious, especially needed once units are maxed out with XP.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I was put off by the graphics (I don't care that they are 2D, I'm an indie game dev myself who makes 2D games, it's just that the GUI felt "messy" with all the buttons and text overlapping each other everywhere and a tiny font, and it was hard to visually distinguish the units from one another), but pretty soon the gameplay hooked me enough to ignore the cumbersome GUI with tiny icons. A lot of love and effort has clearly gone into this game, I played one of the two campaigns so far…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoy this game !...Don't know if the updates are automatic but Ill keep searching. M only problem so far is every other battle or 2 the game gremlins out and you can see the code instead of the game. Im running windows 7 pro and maybe that's the problem, just hate 10. I will be getting all new content as it comes though. Just fun to play!!...(side note ) cant get the giant strength to work
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You know, i wanted to give this game thumbs down. Just for the sake of balansing out a bit all those recommended reviews. But, this game is better than okay-ish in my opinion, so i sorta couldnt -_- Well, the game itself is sorta like tabletop wargame with leveling up, buying new items, hiring/bribing/mindcontrolling/enslaving new units. It's sorta fun, but has some flaws, which i will list here, but they don't really outweight all the good points i found in the game, so whatevs. -weird ass…
