Age of Fear: The Undead King
Developer Leslaw Sliwko
Play as either Sir Edward, a noble Knight defending the Human Kingdom, or Krill, a wicked Necromancer with an unearthly lust for power! The Age of Fear series is a deep and complex turn-based strategy (full of humour!) that fuses a tabletop wargame with RPG elements. From the Steam store page

But then you have Age of Fear... AoF4 had 42 reviews, AoF5 has 5 reviews, but it keeps going! :o store.steampowered.com/developer/ag...

'Look, can you make a game we would like?' 'OK, what do you like about the past games you had?' *Sighs and gives a long list* 'That just fine. How about adding a few of our ideas?' And this is the point where most games fail. This time however the result is great. Pros: - unit development (quantity and quality of options) is simply the best feature of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good strategy concept, poor execution; at least I got this on sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically a tabletop strategy(tactics) game. The game features 2 campaigns (Humans/Undead) that has 15 respectively 14 missions each and it took me ~20 hours to finish them both. The campaign consists of 3 different phases typically in this order: 1. Story 2. Unit Management 3. Battle 1. Story is where the story takes place. This is shown through text which is narrated, like a book. 2. Unit management is where you are allowed to level up your units, purchase more units, purchase…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →S U M M A R Y Age of Fear: The Undead King is a gridless wargame strategy RPG which uses a top-down view and miniatures as if to simulate a tabletop game. Overall, I don't recommend it because it frankly isn't worth the price of 25.00 USD: the combat revolves purely around attacking the enemy until they are dead, there are no mechanics that add strategic depth to the game, you are barely able to interact with the environment, and each battle has the same objective and devolves into the same…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truthfully, Age of Fear in general has a bit of a dated, clunky feel to it, which I'm aware it is a turnoff for many people. I'm not one of those people however, and I'm sure there are many of you out there that can also overcome the lack of modern day luxuries, because this game has a lot of depth to it in terms of gameplay and freedom for your experimentation, and improving your strategic skills. With that out of the way, and granted that "old type games" don't scare you away, Age of Fear is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →11/3/18 Edit: Dev worked with me to resolve my issue. I am more than happy to alter my vote to an upvote. I can tell the dev has put a lot of time and effort into it. In fact, I don't regret buying the whole series at all. In a nut-shell, this thing plays like a virtual table-top of something like Warhammer or D&D. It has dice rolls, circular units navigating a virtual battleground, and a whole bevy of stats, spells, level-ups, and items. Something that sets this game aside (and I really…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great tactical combat and unit development. The tactics in the various fights are puzzles all to themselves.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(Edited since the developers reply) Really I'd have to say this game is in between a yes and a no. Out of the whole series I've only played this and Age of Fear: The Free World. I would recommend sticking with The Free World, which is free and contains all of the most impressive parts of this game (that is to say all of the combat) along with all of the different factions and a much more interesting experience which, unlike this one, actually allows the player some semblance of choice. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tabletop like Strategygame, combined with Roleplaying elements. Back in the eighties there was a tabletop game, that held a lot of people in it's grasp. It was the game Warhammer, not the roleplaying game but the tabletop... you build armies with miniatures and let them fight it out - the rules were easy and you could do a lot with a couple of miniatures that made up your army - it was long before the warhammer franchise became the raging success it should be. And not only in some way this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is simple to learn, but can be extremely difficult on higher difficulty settings, which is something that I look for in a game. The main thing I love is how active the developer is in the community even though they have already made multiple sequels. You'd have expected them to have just abandoned support for the first of the series by this point, but they haven't. If you're looking for a TBS with a fantasy setting, I'd recommend giving this a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mouse click bug makes it too annoying to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall a good game, feels somewhat harder, than AoF2, due to absence of optional fights Can't normally play it though, game simply never loads third battle in "Rise of The Necromancer" company and 13 battle in "The tale of Sir Edward" company. Also, game is quite overpriced for it's poor stability (at least on windows) Better take it with a good discount so you won't be much dissapointed when game will refuse to start/load
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember getting this game ages ago, playing throught it, and then it falling by the wayside. Though, having installed it again and playing through it I can honestly say it has aged amazingly well! The story is... In my opinion, lackluster at best though I found the Necromancer story to be both my favorite and also the weaker of the two stories by the end. Still the gameplay is great and is really in a niche of its own as I have never found a game similar to it that I enjoyed as much as AoF.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little game. Looks like absolute ♥♥♥♥ but thats okay. You play a campaign of subsequent battles. Between each figth you can spend your gold to upgrade your units. There is a lot of depth in composing your perfect army and in making the correct moves in combat. There are four difficulties, the two highest ones are very challenging. Between the battles there are also short lore text which are decent, but nothing special. Also the amount of dedication the devs put in this is awesome. When a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice indie turn based tactical game, the amount of units and ways to improve them is impresive, sadly the presentation is... well, clearly indie, but if you can look past that you will find that the core mechanics are more than engaging enough to enjoy the game. The writing isnt amazing either but it does manage to tell a good story to go along with the carnage. The game features 2 campaigns, various difficulties and multiple endings, considering its price nad how often it goes on sale its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's First Edition Dungeons and Dragons laid out for you, but with a DM who takes no prisoners and gives nothing away. It's a combination of RPG and Wargame in which you can take the glory when everything goes right, but you also get a kicking when it all goes pear-shaped. You can choose to buy the entire package at a suitable discount during a sale, or pick at the individual adventures. Either way, you get a huge amount of simple content that you can return to not too long after your first…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seem like a solid simple game so far. Fun combat, good story. Enjoy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a turn based, RPG, strategy game that reminds me a lot to warhammer because units can move as with a rule instead of hexes or squares. The features two campaigns: humans and undead. Each faction has their own good and funny story and conversations. The battles are separated by story pieces, so after each battle you will have some text to read/listen, or you can just skip it if you just want to fight. The upcoming gold version will feature open world as well as story with some other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Duration 15 hours to complete both campaigns. Age of Fear is a fun computerised style miniatures game which plays smoothly and keeps track of hps, spell effects etc that if played on a tabletop would be a bit overwhelming. It's the perfect system to be computerised. AI is decent and provides a fun challenge. The best part of the game for me was most scenarios have you vastly outnumbered and therefore feel overwhelming (and fill the player with a sense of fear). But, when beaten gives a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are places to polish the game and improve UX, but a gameplay is very nice. I like the party upgrade and wounds system (especially when my units get upgrades and enemy units get wounds). The game also has a wonderful support from the developer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked playing Age of Fear, so it's a full recommendation from me. I played the knight's campain and will soon try out the other side as well. Pros: + Easy game mechanics + Quite good combat system with many features + Good balance, difficulty is increasing + Many funny elements + There is a real leveling system + Developers really support ths game Cons: + Graphic's not the best (I didn't mind at all) + Sometimes it's a little bit too much to read + Mages seem to be slightly too powerful…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great series. And the support by Les is unbeleavable! :-) He still updates all three games at the same time. My recommendation: buy all three (as I did)! (P.S. I played more than the shown hours, but offline.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried Age of Fear in a friend's house a few years ago, and I liked it. Recently, I rediscovered this gem, and instantly bought it, just because I remembered how much fun I had. I expected the game to be somehow dead, after all is a bit old. I found some bugs, and reported them, and they were fixed withing a day. I've seen big studios needing months to fix bugs, but AoF team surprised me. The dedication and love that was put into this game is incredible, they are listening to suggestions and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This year, during the winter sale, I decided to try Age of Fear: I bought all 3 episodes in a bundle I started to play from the first one: Age of Fear – The undead King. I completed the two campaigns (about 15 scenario/battle each: roughly 5 easy, 5 medium and 5 hard) included (human campaign and undead campaign) in about 22 hours at “experienced” level (the second of four). PROs - The strange movement system based on circles is interesting and you must learn to exploit it to cover your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Not Cartoon Graphics good turn based combat tactics cool fantasy setting good story fast paced gear up your hero with dropped loot or purchased from town vendor (both random) tanks, dps, heals decent music voice acting, indie quality, but nice to have the option if you don't like reading story, just listen minor con: easy to accidently move a unit where you didnt mean to if your not careful
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a decent turn-based strategy game with some RPG elements. The combat's tactical and focuses on unit management; positioning your units is crucial; the AI is quite smart and aggressive; there is no grid layout, so there's more flexibility to your movement and positioning. It's got 2 distinctive campaigns (humans and undead); there's some storytelling sprinkled throughout the game; the voice acting is OK; the writing is acceptable and even somewhat funny at times; the UI is easy to read.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why is the mouse so damn small? When i voiced my concern, the dev banned me from the conversation... wow very mature. someone saya something you dont like cuz yur game is crap and you ban them. I'll never buy anything you make again and I will do my best to make sure noone does... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The story line is the most boring generic story you have ever heard and even know they read it to you, you will find yourself thinking of other things. The controls barely work, I have to click on my guy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Fear is a throw back to the glorious retro times of the 1980/90 and brings to mind games such as Lords of Chaos and Warlord. The game has a great story line especially if you use the map that can be found online and has good game play options which help lower the difficulty for less capable players such as Tavis etc. The campaigns are well balanced and long with good narration throughout and there are two of these campaigns to choose from, one can be played as the Goodly, Sir Knightly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Technical jankiness makes the game unplayable. The screen softens into mush and text becomes unreadable. Only clickable selections come into focus when moving mouse over them, but how am I supposed to read the text in the popup when it stays as mush? Avoid at all costs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wtf it's actually rly good, shame it takes 20 seconds to complete tho
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bad programming. lot of glitch. the game itself is ok. bought in the 3 pack. hopefully the age of fear 2 is better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got dead, I guess? It was fun! Explore the battlefield after the fights for them sweet pearls and rubies.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple but nice game. Although, of course it's an indie game, with low budget, you can see the developers put their soul into this game. Quite enjoyable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very good game. It is full of variety and detail, with all kinds of classes, weapons, armor, spells, elements, potions and environments, along with combat mechanics that perfectly accommodate all of them. You are often outnumbered by stronger enemies and it is very satisfying to beat the odds by coming up with the right strategy. The necromancer campaign is specially fun. Every time you kill an enemy, you get a new soldier for your army. The trailer does not lie about that. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good (and cheap) turn based tactics game with a great variety of units and a novel movement mechanism. Has more depth than it would seem at a first glance. Also want to note that all narration is voiced, and the quality is surprisingly good considering how low budget the game is. Kudos to all people involved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oustanding. I started with Age of Fear 3 and I have since discovered that Age of Fear the Undead King doesn't have the open world choices like 2 and 3 do, however, in a dev response this is coming eventually. Even without this the battles are great. Personally id start with Age of Fear 2 or 3 and then get 1 last but I recommend getting all of them and honestly...playing the undead is all the joy you would expect it to be. I haven't felt like a real necromancer since Diablo 2 until I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →HELP! I recently bought all three AOF games and can not get any of them to work correctly (show up in a small unreadable box, even in full screen mode). I have tried everything I have read on discussion boards, etc...but nothing seems to work. I have a new Lenevo Windows laptop with GTX video card that has plenty of memory. If I decrease my screen resolution and max scale/magnification I can "sort of" play but not able to read all text...any suggestions?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad so far.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, i'm a couple hours into the game now, and it's better than I expected. Combats are fun, story is good. You cannot really make choices (so far) in the story, you just follow along, and it's the only negative comment I have so far. *Updated review* I completed the first campaign, which is a feat for me as i usually get bored long before the end of a game. What I like is that the devs succeded in recreating the spirit of old style game without making it clunky as the real old games. I'm…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got some nice touches and undead are fun but humans are dull and combat is just too simplistic, every battle becomes very similar quite quickly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Age of Fear series, available on Steam. I found them a few years ago, and enjoyed them a lot. They felt like an attempt to replicate small Warhammer Fantasy tabletop battles in a video game; they're indie games, but there's a huge variety of options and factions available.
unlabelledView post →Fun Character progression and story. A little clunky with saving and loading.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a true Old School RPG it is very easy to understand to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great turn based game, basic in many ways but challenging in many as well. Give it a shot and see how much fun you have!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find it difficult to play this game. There's a lot of dialog which was all pretty pointless and not very interesting, it is dubbed at least. the little combat I got wasn't interesting but I'm sure there's something for someone. the ui is very unintuitive. I find it unlikely if I put more time into this that it would get much better, and it would have to get a lot better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game with good replay value. It's easy to picl up and has enough depth to try other things with it. It's classes, items and skills will have you trying to min max different styles of combat, many of which are viable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a charming, deep strategy game with some grind but an intriguing tale, pleasant music and artwork, and it has eaten a lot of my time outfitting my merry band and trying to get through a mission with more of a positive k/d ratio.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far I've played one and two and they are FUN. Really story based and if you have a lore for fantasy get this game. It's not your Skyrim but it's a step in a completely opposite direction...which is why I'm recommending it. Step out of your FPS zone and try this turn-based game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →like it nice light game only issue is crashing randomly

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun old school RPG After a couple of hours of gameplay, are still finding it entertaining Easy to play, simple interface, lots of units and enough items to choose from to keep it interesting I am finding it fun to play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it very much. Progression, nice combat system, well rounded - buy it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice little indie tactical indie RPG with a compelling story and interesting mechanics. Got the 3 games in one bundle on a Steam sale. Definitely worth the money. I'm a big fan of Battle Brothers and this game is a nice alternative to BB, but with a story line.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tags: Tactical - Fantasy Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Often updated and well designed miniatures combat that is hindered by a low quality audiovisuals and spritework as well as a sometimes lacking lore and medieval setting. I recommend playing King's Bounty series or playing one of the RTS variants such as Age of Wonders. Age of Fear has a not…
