World War Zero
Developer Rebellion
The World War began in August 1914. It is now March 1964, and war still wages on. The Russian October Revolution has taken place, but the Bolsheviks were crushed by the mad Baron Ugenberg. He plans to build a huge Russo-Mongolian empire that stretches from the Atlantic to Vladivostok, crushing any opposition in his wake. From the Steam store page

60 of 118 · most liked firstThis game is a remaster/remake of Iron Storm. Though the graphics aren't changed much. What is changed though is basically everything else. -you can now carry all weapons you find, yeah; but some weapons replace older weapons because they are basically upgraded weapons, like the automatic rocket launcher replaces the regular one and so on -the balancing is finally not messed up, in fact this is actually now a pretty easy game except a few sections which are bit hard and the Endboss which is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Storm_%282002_video_game%29 Look up the World War Zero part there. It is the "third version" mentioned there. For a direct quote see bottom of this review. The gameplay is still awesome today and it has the (semi-)modern graphic options from this version included. However, this version also cut out some cutscenes (replaced by radio chatter) and the quicksave feature along with Multiplayer and the 3rd person mode... They added much more save-points (laptops)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very short, you can blast through it in about 2-3 hours but it's another fun shooter made by the talented folks at Rebellion. Would love to see a sequel but we'll probably get a hundred more Sniper Elite games instead.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a demake of IRON STORM, iron storm has more features, a third person mode, a flashlight, the ability to drop your weapons, quicksaving/quickloading. Play iron storm instead (ON EASY DIFFICULTY THIS IS NOT A JOKE OR ELSE YOU WILL MAKE 700 QUICKSAVES) and understand that iron storm is a hybrid puzzle/shooter game. With the first two levels being standard shooter game levels. And the remainder of the game being a LONG journey of one very large level. Had i known this earlier i would have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is quiet literally my childhood! It awakes so many memories in my mind, I simply love it! Thank you so much for the masterpiece.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Iron storm, available in other places, is a bad but interesting game. This, World War Zero, is a port of a port to ps2. The game has been gutted of ANYTHING that made it interesting. And before, the game wasn't even fun. Now, it is worse. The movement is scuffed. There is no gunplay. The weapon selection is ass. Just. Suffering. Skip this one. Not even worth it as nostalgia.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They actually managed to screw it up even more. The original had some issues and instead of fixing them in this "remaster" they just removed some of the content, cut levels by probably a third, straight up disabled certain mechanics and it managed to look/play worse than the original too. So the only update they did is make it run on modern resolutions out of the box without having to do some work. Absolutely avoid, play the original, it's a muuuch better game and that negative review seems…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is basically the PS2 version of the game Iron Storm but with a different title and different gameplay... The levels here are almost identical to the original, the problem is that the gameplay is heavily changed and now it is much more slower and simpler, also there are no more puzzles so the game becomes very repetitive and very linear if not even boring pretty fast (the gameplay simplicity reminds me a bit the FPS game ''Warhammer 40.000: Fire Warrior''), the game may not be terrible but…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really cool to see this on Steam since back in the day the PC CD version was only ever sold in the UK. I played Iron Storm 20 years ago but never got a chance to play this game until now. Anyway, World War Zero is a 2004 Playstation 2 port of the 2002 PC game Iron Storm, but so many changes were made that it feels like almost an entirely different game, with only the basic level layout and story being the same. It feels like a very typical "average" console FPS of the time period; overall…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve previously done threads on the PSOne games (The Mummy, Largo Winch and Rainbow Six:Lone Wolf), and this thread is already far longer than I intended. I made some levels on Dredd vs Death, but ended up on World War Zero: Ironstorm, where we took a PC game and ported it to PS2
unlabelledView post →World War Zero feels outdated even when compared to other games from its release era. While games like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault or Call of Duty offered more polished gameplay, better AI, and multiplayer experiences, World War Zero falls short in these areas. The graphics are basic, the controls are clunky, and the overall design feels rough compared to its contemporaries. It lacks the level of polish and innovation that made other shooters from the early 2000s stand out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World War Zero is the remake of "Iron Storm" that can also be found on Steam. The game has been made shorter and all annoying stealth parts are gone now. I didn't like the change of skins and that you can't quicksave anymore though. Still, World War Zero should be considered the definitive version of the game. Overall, World War Zero is a mediocre shooter with a great start fighting in trenches, some interesting propaganda clips and a weaker second half. The biggest gripe I have with this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →warning On one PC of mine no matter what I do, game doesn't work at all. I always get the error "unable to launch Direct3D - a compatible graphics card or driver was not detected". So it may or may not happen to you too. For the good news the game worked instantly on my new PC. It is a very cool game. This is sort of a remake of Iron Storm and while mostly it is way better than original there are few downgrades. + Combat is very basic, but a nice weapon variety makes it a lot of fun. +…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice classic FPS. It is a bit difficult to change weapons, but it is fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World War Zero is a short "mid" game from the early 2000s. Runs well on modern hardware; you just have to cap the fps and force V-sync on. It felt like you were missing a bunch of context on what you are doing. Turns out this is a port of a PS2 version, and many of the cutscenes have been removed. Took me 2 hours and 19 minutes to complete the game. I think the asking price of the game is still too high for the amount of content in the game, so pick it up when it is on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World War Zero is an ancient game from 2002. It's a whopping 23 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. And what a great idea…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im on the 7th mission of this game and I was having a blast but I keep dying in what should be a "level transition" and cannot progress in the elevator. Ive tried looking for guides and videos to see if anyone else has had this issue and have returned empty handed. Unfortunate it was a really fun game so far
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I must admit, that I did not play the original "Iron Storm", as this game is a port/remake, by Rebellion (different developer, if you are looking for a "sequel" to "Iron Storm" just search "Bet on Soldier"), of that game for the PS2 and then later back to PC, Which is quite noticeable in level length/design, pc optimisation and difficulty, so I won´t be able to compare the two, But this game is quite all right, just nothing groundbreaking, albeit weirdly similar to "Warhammer 40k: Wire…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dated game now but I'm sure back then it was seen as just alright. Its got interesting lore as in WW1 never ended and we have Mongolian Empire 2.3 attacking United West Europe and its been some 40 years at war. But there's still stuff we see in the modern day like jet planes , radio communications and TV. We are playing a local legend trying to stop a super weapon and we cause a lot of R/D havoc until we realize our commanders want the war to keep going so Europe needs America for guns ,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →broken and janky as hell in the best way possible
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun classic FPS.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Single player, retro style FPS. Simple and enjoyable. Edit: got to a part where I got captured about halfway through the game. When the level starts, you're trapped in a glass enclosure, but some careless shooting from enemies sets you free. When the level first started, I could punch. I logged for the night. Booted today, and now no matter what I do, I can't attack. So I am now stuck, unable to proceed in the game. Yay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Janky but fun old school fps. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(Don't let my time distract you from the review here, because I had a physical copy of this game even before it came to Steam) A shoddy remake of what was already not a great game, World War Zero fails in every way as a shooter. I'm unsure how to properly even start this review, but I think the biggest one is the game's visuals. It's kind of astonishing how it looks this bad though, given the game was already not a serious looker for 2002. It looks worse both style wise and graphically.…

Because they reviewed World War Zero and I wanted to prove to myself that this quote did exist outside of my faded memory :) Still proud of what we achieved, even if it was a 6/10 game

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game, but this is by far the worst version of it to exist by a landslide. Some of the major selling points for this release include “widescreen support”, which is also available in the other two versions of the game, and visual upgrades such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. While these upgrades are undoubtedly welcome additions, the game somehow still looks inferior to the PS2 release, and by extension the original PC release. The reason I put “widescreen support” in quotes is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World War 1 never ended. The battlefields have been consumed by extreme propaganda, and the need to profiteer on the now 50 year long war. Will this end the war? Or will it rage on due to war profiteering greed? World War Zero is a re-release mish mash of a game called Iron Storm, with quite a few changes. The game is a first person shooter, set in a war torn part of the Eastern front in Europe. The lore that is established here is in a game that really isn't good, but not bad either. It…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nostalgia plays a big part with this game, as I used to play it on the PS2 when I was young. It was certainly a nice trip down memory lane, but nostalgia aside, this is a mediocre shooter at best. The concept is very unique. The idea that the First World War never ended and is still going well into the 60's gives World War Zero a captivating premise and a unique aesthetic. The game does a really good job with trench warfare skirmishes in the early stages, though the latter half of the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So you played Iron Storn, loved the setting, but hated all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and stealth? Then this is the game for you, because it all got removed for a short, fast paced action shooter. I honestly wish this would be done with a lot more of the early 2000 games with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ forced in stealth mechanics, because it was cool at the time. Definetely support this. Time to finish the game: 2,5 hours
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game remake of IRON STORM? Are you serious? World War Zero is a technical downgrade compared to Iron Storm. I've seen better from high school students.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great old game and i recommend it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great old school shooter that you can just stick on and shoot your merry way through hordes of soldiers! I love these old shooters and this one delivers! Just great fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hmm tricky. While I would like to make my take on FEAR, Condemned, STALKER or even NOLF, they are pretty perfect as they are, so it would be a narcissistic mess 😅 However, I think I would do a good work bringing back Iron Storm: World War Zero 😎 -- a game that deserved more attention and care...

unlabelledView post →Dull, drab and unimpressive even for its time this heavily cut down ps2 port is still dumb shlocky fun and short enough for a single playthrough. Interesting to see the origins of a studio that now focusses on rally games. Only get this on sale and only if you want to experience something weird and obscure.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an absolute blast. The price-tag is definitely a steal!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun and short FPS. Interesting setting, but not fleshed out very far. It makes for a fun afternoon. Ran well on Linux!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rating 4/10 Intro I'd like to experience what this obscure alternate history-based shooter has to offer. Except, I keep getting soft-locked in the first snow level, no matter how many times I restarted. I'd say skip this one and play MachineGames' Wolfenstein trilogy instead, if you haven't already. Positives + Good weapon variety. + Weapons have good impact. + Alternate Word War 1 setting. Negatives - Soft-lock prevented me from progressing. - You have to approach computers at set locations…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I beat this game in under 3 hours and here's my review. In this game, it's a game that's WW1 but it continues on in this game's world. You play as a soldier going through the battlefield doing objectives. You get weapons that you can upgrade from picking up guns you find in the game. You can start with a song to a powerful machine gun. There are side objectives you can do in the game but isn't required to finish the level. The game's detail is pretty good and does get you immersed in the game.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World War Zero Positives: + More tighten up compared to the original game (Ironstorm) + The new implemented ideas + Quite fun + Retro feel + More guns to play with and better gunplay + More balanced difficulty (a big positive!) + The consortium gun Negatives: - The graphics look really dated - The sounds are mostly weird and low quality - Low FOV (and not adjustable) - Most of the cutscenes from the original are cut out, and the story makes no sense anymore - Most of the enemies now look like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest, World War Zero isn't very good; the plot barely exists, the AI is hilariously bad, it's dated as heck, the level design is pretty poor, and there is no music at all, so the audio can be really bland. That said, I found it refreshing to play a simple little shooter that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's nice to just walk through the levels blasting dudes with big guns like the good ol' days. I think the $5 asking price is a solid one. That said, I can't really recommend it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall great game !, you never see alt-history games like this one around these days. A reboot in a modern engine would be brilliant !, but from what I've seen rebellion and 4X haven't been active for over decade so it's sadly highly unlikely.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I DESPERATELY wanted to like this game but it's just not good. The concept art, setting, the enemy designs and everything are some of the most creative things I've ever seen, but the gameplay and level design just aren't there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite being a remaster, this game has aged very poorly. The gameplay is at best mediocre, the graphics are poor (especially in the early parts of the game). The interface also has many problems. I couldn't open the objective screen (it would pop open and immediate close), and changing weapons is horrible (scroll your mouse wheel and hope you can stop on the correct weapon). Other remasters of games this age (such as Quake, Duke Nukem, etc) are *much* better than this game. World War Zero is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to say here that this game is really really janky. Jump physics, weapon feedback, and knowing where and what to do in levels sometimes isn't too visible. The graphics are dated, the textures suck, and the cutscenes are awful FMVs, all 3 of them. The FOV is also very low, and PCGW lists no fixes. Its completely understandable to be put off by these problems. BUT there is value here, the world, and alternate 1960s (think Resistance for PS3) where World War 1 never ended, and the war is on…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very fine and fantastic classic World War shooter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WWZero is a weird game that I honestly never knew existed. Probably due to it at the time most likely not being that unique gameplay-wise. However the premise of the game is honestly something ive only heard of on Alternate-history Youtube Channels and that in itself is already a good thing in my book. The art style is also something I actually came to adore throughout my playthrough. The bulky, ramshackle, retro and utterly un-sleek design of the weapons and uniforms is intresting to look at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 bottles of beer, here's one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the PS2 version of the original videogame IronStorm for the PC. It is basically the same game, with the same storyline - the storyline being what makes it interesting. An alternate world with a never-ending World War 1, between the West and a Russian-Mongolian Empire led by the Mad Baron Ungern von Stenberg. It´s like the Kaiserreich mod, but if it ended in a chaotic evil path.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game imo, little bit short couse console port to pc from iron storm to console port kinda stupid way of making things but works.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who enjoyed the original Iron Storm back when it came out, I can say that this version of the game is neither an upgrade or a downgrade. Its more an "Alternate Version." I very much enjoyed the original, but it was a very Janky game with serious bugs and glitches. Some of which soft locked progression. The difficulty spikes were due to overpowered AI, hit detection issues, and bad damage control. It could be agonizingly frustrating at times. The Gunplay was poor. The weapons…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tonight on the webstream at around 7PM!!! I will be playing World War Zero! Also known as IronStorm on PC (PS2 version is PAL only!) I know very little about this, but the concept is neat! Let's see if the game is actually neat too!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun old fps that is playable without any issues on Win11 now. I really enjoyed the environment and designs, the story, especially how it's told could be better, but it's still a fun romp for an afternoon or a couple of evenings.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remember playing this back in the day. Played San Andreas a lot and one day my friend gave me his copy of this game and I played it until completion. During that time i kind of completely forgot about GTA (even though it was for 2 days). The combat is somewhat satisfying and punchy. The AI is nothing to write home about and neither are the graphics. What is interesting about the game is its weird cuts and repackaging from the original PC release. So now the story makes even less sense.…
