This is a really slow-paced roguelike with a heavy focus on exploration and discovery in a truly alien-feeling world. If you like games like Qud or Morrowind, you owe yourself this game store.steampowered.com/app/1095040/...
unlabelledView post →One fun aspect of going through bug reports of a generated game is that sometimes you get some nice surprises. This is Haven, Unexplored 2's hub location, covered in snow and half-eaten by the void. I'd never seen that before. #gamedev #procgen
unlabelledView post →Unexplored 2's tutorial was designed to teach the fundamental interactions needed to play the game, where we now feel it should've taught the game's general philosophy. If anything, it actively reinforces preconceptions about action-style RPGs that we actively trying to break away from. #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Do any other procgen games do procedural game progression dependencies (beyond simple literal locks and keys)? I guess maybe Unexplored 2 by @jorisdormans.bsky.social, although I think that's using a rather different approach?
unlabelledView post →🔴❄️~Stream Starting~❄️🔴 Gonna start off with some COS then moving onto a new game, Unexplored 2 before we then rotate into the multiplayer games for evening hope everyone is having a lovely Friday so far, do you guys have any plans for the weekend?
unlabelledView post →Rolled out a patch today... In fact I rolled out two! One is the weekly #Unexplored2 patch. The other is somewhat more unexpected... #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Gather round, gather round, while I share the tenth legend of the #RoguesGallery! This is a...complicated pick. It's not a game I especially like, but it's one I deeply, deeply respect. This is one of the most ambitious indie adventures you'll play this side of Dwarf Fortress. It's Unexplored 2!
unlabelledView post →Wrapping up the gauntlet level for #unexplored2 #dungeon23. It has become a complex, trap-filled space. The generator has several options to create structures & to theme traps differently. The main objective is to find the two levers to disable the force gates guarding the exit.
unlabelledView post →Exploring the lava cave you can spot a room with a chest and a staircase leading up. To reach it you first need to cool the lava though (or make clever use of a blinking spell...) Still one day behind for my #unexplored2 #dungeon23 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Bit of a crazy day today so I barely had the time to decorate this room. The lava can now be cooled by harvesting the flame sigil here. It just might reveal some extra paths... #unexplored2 #dungeon23 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →More blood magic is going on in the next hall. There's also a small key hidden in one of those four bowls. You just need to get rid of the blood to find it. Will you collect it in a flask, spill it, or drink it? #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Beyond the trapped room you find a mausoleum, with bowl with some dubious content. If you have an empty flask you can scoop it up... #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Exploring the cave beyond the broken wall you find something bad has been going down in this location. You also get a chance to find out what those blood circles do when they are activated. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Exploring the crypts underneath Haven further, you find yourself in a long corridor with locked gates and one wall that has been smashed through. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →I am trying to line up my #unexplored2 #dungeon23 rooms a little better with the actual development of the game. We’re currently working on stuff that allows you impact the world in more meaningful ways, and this new wind catcher is a good test case for that.
unlabelledView post →For today’s #unexplored2 #dungeon23 I’ve added a feature that can function as a hazard, a switch and a way to manipulate the wind at the same time…
unlabelledView post →A straightforward entry for #unexplored2 #dungeon23 today: you can tap into the magic of the hidden sprite in order to get past a broken door. #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →And here's the #unexplored2 #dungeon23 entry for January 2. I'm not going to restrict myself to dungeon rooms only; the game also features awesome outdoor environments. Here's a new obstacle ‘room’ that might soon be found in one of the game’s earlier levels: The Garden of Yendor.
unlabelledView post →Ooh, Joris says "I've collected all the dev blogs I wrote for #unexplored2 in one location: https://www.ludomotion.com/devblogs.html It's mostly about design and content generation." Always worth checking out his work! (original link: https://twitter.com/DormansJoris/status/1589526217241559041)
unlabelledView post →You might be able to find more force gates that are actually linked to the same levers that disable the ones blocking your progress. In them you might find a boon, but chances are that you might also unleash a bane into the level... #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Moving up a level for #unexplored2 #dungeon23. We have a trap-filled gauntlet built around the 'uncertain return cycle' pattern: to unlock (b) to the next level at (c) you need to traverse through at least 1 valve. The way back is not the same and it will not be as easy... #indiedev
unlabelledView post →I added these rules do add corridors around rooms that are marked as small but generate fairly large. They were intended for interiors but now the game treats me with this awesome looking double walled garden. And I think it looks awesome! #unexplored2 #pcg
unlabelledView post →Today I was working on the bigger rooms. Making sure they are generated with more 'texture'. 'Big gates' are detected, and I improved the rules that located the center of a room, and added a trick to make a room that was too large smaller (e). #unexplored2 #dungeon23 #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Today I have been working on the small 'side rooms'. These can be filled with all manner of things. Rubble, pottery, and wells, for example. But the local folk can also convert them into dormitories, armories, and kitchens based on their needs. #unexplored2 #dungeon23 #indiedev
unlabelledView post →Moving on to the 2nd interior level of the new Prime Elemental Forge location for #unexplored2 #dungeon23. This site is a large labyrinthine interior space. There are few hazards, but it will likely host the folk that call this site home. a) the main entrance, guarded b) the main room, local folks be will be here in force c) exit to the next level d) possible back entrance from the lava cave e) blocked passages that can be cleared but not without attracting attention.
unlabelledView post →The gate in courtyard of the entrance to the prime elemental forge is now a magic force gate. You'll need to switch off the furnace in the crypt below to deactivate its magic. Until you do, you better not get too close... #Unexplored2 #dungeon23 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →I wanted to place a regular sigil forge in the room before the furnace, but it was tricky. The space tends to be large. But I came up with a good solution: segment the space into smaller rooms. It now starts to make much more sense. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #indiegame #indiedev
unlabelledView post →A forge needs heat, right? So it makes perfect sense that in the crypts below you have to deal with lava. Today I did the main structure for this level, leaning heavily on a classic lock-and-key cycle. #unexplored2 #dungeon23 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Today I am starting a new level as my focus for #unexplored2 #dungeon23. It will be a redesign of the final level with the Prime Elemental Forge. Spoilers ahead! (In so far a generated game can be really spoiled) #gamedev #indiegame 1/6
unlabelledView post →The last room this level contains a tome with necromantic lore, but will also spring its final fiery surprise on the hero. This concludes my first coherent #unexplored2 #dungeon23 level, so I also include a complete recap of the level. Even if the generator has moved a few things around by now. Nevertheless I am quite happy with the overall result...
unlabelledView post →You need to deal with some crawling skeletal abominations before you can open the gate to the final room of this level. Unfortunately this might also cause a new problem. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →The small key that was covered in blood leads to a library where a secret can be uncovered. If you found the scroll earlier, it can be put to good use in this room. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Traps, a key, and another passage can be found in the room at western end of the hallway. #dungeon23 #unexplored2 #indiedev #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Playing hide and seek with the enemy AI. #Unexplored2 #gamedev #indiedev
unlabelledView post →I fell behind with my #unexplored2 #dungeon23. Compared to my p&p version I found it increasingly hard to come up with good ideas. And I reckon it is because all rooms have been isolated affairs. So I decided to change that. From now on my Unexplored2 #dungeon23 effort will also be towards creating coherent levels. So I set down and designed an addition to the Haven template I wanted to do for a while now. The plan looks a but like this: 1/5
unlabelledView post →I’m loving the new style of incantations I added a part of my #unexplored2 #dungeon23 effort, recently. They just have so much better gameplay affordances. Both individually and hooked up in minor puzzles and challenges. It also highlights another difference in ‘dungeon design’ for ppRPGs and cRPGs. In the latter you tend to reuse and build up mechanics in situations that grow more complex over time. For a ppRPG that seems far less natural. I wonder why?
unlabelledView post →Another old mechanic that got lost over time is brought back for the #unexplored2 #dungeon23 trap room: sealed chests. What I like about this trap is that it leaves time for the player to panic while it is going off… I actually wrote a blog post on trap design that goes on about that type of philosophy for traps in much greater depth and detail. https://tinyurl.com/ve94k94c I guess that if your doing #dungeon23 you might find it useful... (2/2)
unlabelledView post →Today’s #unexplored2 #dungeon23 features stuff that I made just before and after today’s patch…
unlabelledView post →A classic scene for today’s #unexplored2 #dungeon23. Dark tunnels, a hidden key, and lurking spiders. Easy to pull off in a tt-rpg, much harder in a generated action rpg that aspires to resemble tt-rpgs! #indiedev #gamedev #procgen
