Interesting little Japanese indie game dropped today - Tower Of Mask. It's a Dungeon Master-like grid based action RPG but with a little extra Souls-like feel. Combat is surprisingly mobile, with enemies dodging and weaving along with you. Also, guns. store.steampowered.com/app/2918410/...

The highlighted interactive elements make the game too easy, turning it into a walk in the park, and ultimately, boring & uninteresting. It also takes away the joy of exploration and discovery, since even secret buttons are pointed out automatically. The sense of searching is lost. Please give us an option to disable this feature. Otherwise, the combat is cool and the ambiance is pretty good!

I am a 52 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing Tower of Mask. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son found this game at Christmas, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I…

While it's not Legend of Grimrock 3, Tower of Mask fits into a very similar niche as a grid-based, real-time dungeon crawler. Whether or not it was intentional, there are also similarities to early From Software titles, notably King's Field and especially the slightly more obscure Shadow Tower, and I say that with the highest praise, as many games tout their similarities to those titles while capturing absolutely none of their charm, something Tower of Mask adeptly sidesteps by having a real…

Next to Lunacid, this is one of the most exceptional Indie games I've ever played, and all made by a single dude! Outstanding atmosphere, clever puzzles, a fun combat system that blends action and tile-based dungeon crawlers, great horror elements that scared me more than a few times, and wonky balancing when you get an actual glock. Super fun, creative, unique, and only takes 8-10 hours to complete.

This game gives Grimrock 1 & 2 a run on the money. 'That's impossible!' says the veteran Steam Shop Tag: 'Grid-based movement' + 'Dungeon Crawler' -connoisseur who gets all possible titles out there. The handful of them or so before you are already deep in Anime territory which is it's own thing. Thing is this niche is really lacking in GOOD attempts that either a) give people a run on the money with tough combat or b) entertaining puzzles and world building. Majority of games out there…

Excellent game! Definitely a MUST PLAY for fans of dungeon crawling! Expected playtime: 8 to 14 hours. You can look around with the mouse while moving through the tiles, unlike other First Person Grid-Based Dungeon Crawlers, which makes exploration much more smoother and satisfying. Combat requires you to aim at the enemies' weak points, which can be quite tricky to hit due to enemy movement and is mostly melee combat. There are a few ranged options, but they're either limited by resources.…

I LOVE this genre of game. This is a really good one. Movement is still grid-based, but you can look around and attack in any direction, which opens up some unexpectedly dynamic fighting and puzzling options. One thing I didn't realize until I had 60 of them is that leveling up gives you skill points to use to upgrade your stats.

Tried a dungeon crawler demo on Steam that's a homage to yesteryear (like Grimrock but solo) called Tower of Mask. Grid-based movement , 90° turns, but you can free look with the mouse. Took me a bit over an hour to explore. Was fun! Also liked how it defined difficulty levels as types of "luck".

If you love the Legend of Grimrock series and have been itching for Grimrock 3 in some form, look no further. Tower of Mask feels like Legend of Grimrock 1, but with even better and more active combat. The atmosphere is eerie and creepy, it honestly feels a bit like a horror game at some points. But that makes the dungeon crawling even more tense and exciting. Healing can be scarce on normal mode or higher, and the enemies can be relentless if you're not careful. But, the game does an…

As a grimrock fan I was looking forward to trying this. This is pretty bare bones. I got to about floor 2.5, and its dungeons were pretty boring, and the enemies also boring. The level system was bare bones. And the equipment all broke after about 20 attacks.

While tower of mask has a lot going for it in terms of atmosphere, a lack of clarity around game mechanics and unreasonable difficulty really lets the game down. I think part of the issue might be a poor localisation but if your going to base turn-based combat around targeting specific limbs on enemies than that’s the sort of thing that should be explained in the tutorial. Secondly, a lot like “labyrinth of the demon king”. The game just starts out with a punishing level of difficulty with very…

This game makes nearly everything right. Gameplay, graphics, the fights are gorgeous, text snippets, sounds,... I gladly give a thumbs up for it. The (b)(s)ad things of the game are - the inconvenient inventory handling, no logical slots to dress equipment on - the non-existent skilltree / skills (which are crucial for any rpg) - lost potential - no spells, no magic system However, - the combat is excellent. the various 360 degree possibilities and the weak spots of enemies are even…

Absolutely amazing and solid. Very comparable to Grimrock, but with strange and terrifying enemies, and some of the most tense combat I've seen in a gridder. There are a good number of puzzles and secrets that are rewarding to find and solve, but so far it doesn't seem like anything frustratingly absurd or obtuse. My only potential complaint is that the character building is quite simplistic. Half my stats come from equipment, not levels. Weapons are basically either quick and weak, slow and…

Tower of Mask is a great dungeon crawler as far as graphics, concept, dungeon design and puzzles. However, not having native controller support, kills everything for me because of my disabilities. In fact, it is one of the least intuitive control schemes I have ever encountered...including all keyboard and mouse games I used to play, going all the way back to the 90s. This weird control sceme needs a serious overhaul. Seriously... on the default settings, you equip a weapon in your "RIGHT"…

Really short and sweet game. In the past I have bounced off other 1st person dungeon crawlers, this game has made me want to revisit them and revise my opinions on them. The puzzles ranged from fairly easy to medium complexity but the latter ones did enough to make you feel great for solving them. I quite liked the dance of combat, though I think the charge mechanic could probably have been built up a bit more. I did find that it was useful in some instances that felt like ambushes to push…

Not my favorite dungeon crawler, but a strong showing from a solo dev. It doesn't have quite as many ideas as Grimrock, but it does a good job of creating a hostile and unsettling atmosphere. And the combat is a step up over games like Grimrock, where you have to actually aim and block your attacks directionally. Hitting enemies in the right spot will trigger critical hits, which stun them briefly and do increased damage. So there's more depth than just dancing in a circle to dodge and hit. I'm…

This one was a miss for me - I really should have tried the demo. If it's not obvious, Tower of Mask is a Dungeon Master/Grimrock style DRPG, though it's much closer to Grimrock 1 than 2. And that's why I think I bounced off it: Grimrock 2 spoiled 1 for me. I can't go back to the monotonous solid stone dungeons after tasting Grimrock 2's variety of environments. It's just a massive step back - more than I personally thought it would be. I don't think this is a bad game, necessarily, I just…

Great atmosphere, fluid movement, fun combat (spiced up with tackles), good pacing, and fun puzzles (albeit on the easier side). The most worthy successor to The Legend of Grimrock. Don't come for the story...the exploration, traps, puzzles, and combat are absolute perfection. The combat is a twist on your real-time "dance" mechanic. Now you can attack diagonally, and the monsters can as well. The tense atmosphere within the tower you explore leads "Mask" to be a survival horror game as much as a dungeon-crawling RPG. You won't find your typical orcs, trolls, and dwarves, but instead a variety of different cultists and…

Pretty fun first person dungeon crawler with some interesting puzzles and ambush mobs. I liked it, but it only took about 10hrs to beat, there's no reward for not using guns and there's no new game plus. I kept thinking a lot of items would have additional uses for secrets but they didnt and i collected every mask type for no apparent reason. It was still a good game, just hope it gets more content or a sequel.

I don't always write reviews, but when I do, it's almost always because, for one reason or another, a game has managed to properly impress me. Simply enough, I had a lovely time with this. It's a nice, classic jaunt through a proper, griddy dungeon, with excellent presentation and art direction overall, not even considering the fact that it is apparently the effort of a tiny team (if I am not mistaken, a single primary dev, possibly some external assets, and a small localization team).…

It felt like a game made for kids or people who are not really into games. Maybe I just needed to keep playing but, honestly, it's really boring because there's basically NO challenge at all. Every single enemy goes down to the same basic strategy - back off and hit or just spam hit hit hit. I haven't played many dungeon crawlers, so I was out of my wheelhouse here. I really liked this one and it's a good entry point into the genre! I've played maybe one turned based dungeon crawler and this one is active combat. It's satisfying to dodge, clobber, and strike the weak points of enemies. The physic based puzzles are tight too, in combination with the active system makes some of them interesting. Cool game, I'll put some other dungeon crawlers on my watchlist.

A thoroughly enjoyable little dungeon crawler! While much of this game could be said to be a Legend of Grimrock clone (and in a lot of ways this is true), it takes a number of cues from the Shadow Tower series. Mostly in the atmosphere, if I'll be honest; it has a very dark and foreboding air to it, complete with strange and sometimes horrifying enemies and this sense of being in a place that rejects you for daring to step foot in its labyrinthine environment. A great tile-based dungeon crawler, similar to Legend of Grimrock, more 1 than 2. A very impressive effort, considering it's a solo dev! Has a few twists on a combat system, such as tackle, to prevent you from being boxed in by enemies, weak spot damage, focus attacks by charging and diagonal attacks with long-reaching weapons. Needs a good amount of technical polish that probably isn't coming at this point. Weirdly very demanding for the graphics level and being an Unreal title, every time I alt + tab out of the game it freezes and takes an exaggerated multiple minutes to recover or just becomes completely unresponsive which requires ending task in task manager. This issue persist across every window mode. Not super happy that I basically have to reopen the game every time I need to switch to another window quickly.

I was captivated by the concept and the idea of the game but was met with poor optimization and mediocre execution. It's not a bad game per se but I would only recommend it if you really-really want to play "old school" dungeon crawler and have already finished both Legend of Grimrock. And even then you could probably find more decent alternatives.

There are a lot of FPV retro clone dungeon crawlers out there, but this is the first I'v played in a long while that felt fresh while still keeping to the tone of the older games. The low ceilings and creepy atmospheric sounds really ramps up the claustrophobia and make the exploration nerve wracking. Combat is challenging without being punishing and the puzzles are the same.
