What people are saying
Mostly positive, but many find it frustratingly difficult and unbalanced.
Players praise the game's unique blend of word games and roguelike deckbuilding, calling it inventive and engaging. Many enjoy the challenge and the rewarding feeling of finding the right word. [1][5][13][15]
However, a significant number of players criticize the game for being unbalanced and unfair, especially in later levels. Some feel that RNG and enemy gimmicks make runs unwinnable regardless of skill, and that power-ups often come with punishing downsides. [9][14][21][33][34][35][36]

unlabelledView post →So, basically, this is a word game. Okay, why not. I like this kind of games. BUT You can't type words that are 12+ letters long. You "fight" enemies with random powerups, 50% of them will actually hurt or kill you in your OWN "deck". Each enemy has a gimmick, for instance, there is one that will one shot you the next turn, if you don't kill yourself first with the negative effects on your letters. Another one limits your capacity to write maximum 6 letter words. So you can not inflict…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tomb of the Bloodletter brings an external skill base into roguelike deck builders, something I personally haven't seen before. Unfortunately for me that skill is scrabble, which I am awful at. In spite of my 4th grade spelling capacity I am currently enjoying this game with few complaints so far. The game both mitigates the frustration and embraces the excitement of RNG in its progression scheme, and in doing so the game feels fresh on each run. The art style is simple yet cohesive, and…

unlabelledView post →I feel like this game could get a recommend but there are a few things that limit it. The premise is like many rogue-likes you run through over and over, getting upgrades and tools to make it easier as you go along. But, this game doesn't do that. Your upgrades ALWAYS come with a downside. You must take damage or let your opponent get stronger to get mediocre spells. The spells are distributed randomly, meaning if they land right you can unleash a massive combo... Once. Then you hope they land…

unlabelledView post →I truly wish I could recommend this game. But for me the thing that makes a rogue lite game bearable through all the failures is that it feels like it's at least my fault and that my personal skill improving will improve the quality of my runs. That does not seem to be the case here. Be it a failure of, or a lack of, game logic, you're repeatedly dealt unwinnable hands and it just doesn't feel good; it doesn't help that you gain nothing from the failure but a sense that you should play another…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nothing but respect for the developer for trying something new and fresh. It is truly an amazing concept for a game, and I will keep an eye on their future games, but unfortunately the execution on this is not what I expected. If you want TL:DR, the game is just not fun, that's the core problem. It also feels like a quick game jam proof of concept, rather than a finished game. I would keep this game if it was an early access or a demo, but I'm kinda surprised this took two years. It is so bare…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are too many issues with this game as if they haven't even played it. Some of the enemies will just soft lock you from beating them or even hurting them. There are magics that don't work correctly and instead of doing what they say do the opposite. There are too many effects that reduce the fun of the game, and make it very frustrating to play. Getting your abilities stuck on letters like Z or Q or X and then not able to really use them in any ways outside of using one of your very…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enemies are too spongy, most of the "power-ups" actually hurt you instead of the enemy, the amount of damage you can do with your powerups is miniscule compared to the amount the enemy can do, and the rate at which you gain more powerups is painfully slow 5 is not enough. Basically completely unbalanced with the only redeeming factor being the art, and that's just personal preference. Needs to be worked on some more and rebalanced and it could be cool.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very clever word game where you try to construct words in ways to properly proc letter effects (left-to-right). Not too far in yet, but I'm super digging it. Hopefully it'll help my vocabulary recall!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game I'm having a very hard time going between liking and not, and whether to recommend or not for that matter. I do think the enjoyment I had with this game is enough for me to give it a positive recommendation, albeit with the caveat that it is a VERY difficult game. The game is very fun once you're immersed in the challenge the game gives. It encourages really trying out different vocabulary in different fights and honestly has been really great at learning better typing skills due…

unlabelledView post →Tomb of the Bloodletter was such a great time today! Takes the typical typing game format but switches it up a little where your limitations are also your strengths. This one really puts you on the spot and makes you think before you type since your output is so limited. Big brain Scrabble stuff! 😵💫
unlabelledView post →Super unique take on a deckbuilder AND on word games! I never realized how well the two could blend together until I gave this a shot. The magic system is super freeform and turns every combat into an engaging word puzzle. The different spells also give you a ton of choice into what kind of words you want to be making on your run. Long words? Words with weird letters? Words with double letters? Up to you. Definitely worth a buy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun game, but it does suffer from being too random and unpredictable - there's not enough control to allow you to have more control.

unlabelledView post →What looked like a fun game, became very boring, very quickly, over the top difficulty at the start, first enemy I faced constantly healed back to full health while my health dropped. Second attempt I killed one enemy, the second took out all the vowels that left no obvious words to use, while my health dropped. Boring game, even more boring to stream. NOT MY CUPPA.

unlabelledView post →Finally completed a run on Tomb of the Bloodletter. If you like word games and roguelikes it's a great time. Not a perfect game but (was) under a fiver (I think it's maybe £6 now), has lots of replayability and gets your brain working. Having a good vocabulary helps but there's still tricks to it.
unlabelledView post →The recent (16/04/26) negative reviews here are... weird. Even leaving aside the game costs less than $10, none of them make any sense. "All the buffs have a negative!" Yes, because the entire game is spelling words, and you can use literally any word. Without penalties there'd be no stakes. "It requires you to make up words!" Like, that's the game? If you don't like thinking of words why did you buy a word-making-up game? It's like dungeon-crawling Scrabble - no notes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked this game but it has some kind of resolution bug that prevents it launching for me, so I refunded it. Please let us know when you fix it devs. I want to play your game! Edit: devs are aware so hopefully I can change this to positive soon! The game was fun!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun game but it's EGREGIOUSLY unbalanced. I know roguelikes tend to be very luck oriented but unless you get a god run you're basically confirmed to lose at some point when you run into an enemy that has some BS buffs and gimmicks. Despite that i still do recommend it. It's still a fun game despite how unbalanced it is, and it's only 8 bucks. I dont regret my purchase, but they do gotta rebalance some stuff with this game ngl.

unlabelledView post →Tomb of the Bloodletter is a strikingly inventive roguelike developed by Ethan’s Secretions and published by indie.io, built around a simple but bold premise: your keyboard is your weapon. It blends turn-based dungeon crawling with word construction in a way that feels both cerebral and tense, creating an experience that rewards vocabulary, creativity, and strategic planning in…

unlabelledView post →Great take on a word game roguelike! Differentiates itself by ditching the Balatro structure in favor of novel mechanics that better reward careful word choice. Unsurprisingly, negative reviews seem to be angling for balance "fixes" whereby roguelike intuitions allow a player to completely bypass any gaps in their vocabulary. Haters stay nonwinning (a great word for this game!)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is no way these mf leaving reviews are real. Can be a good game, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the amount of times the game basically sets you up to shoot your own feet is crazy. Anyways- these reviews are definitely bots.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am loving this game. It really scratches the same itch as Scrabble and Wordle, while also involving the strategy and game-learning mechanics of a roguelike. I am glad to see that by learning the afflictions, enemies, and magicks, I am seeing more and more gameplay depth, and the different playable characters change up how you approach the run. Overall a fantastic home-grown gem.
