This game has brilliant parts and infuriating parts. The brilliant parts are truly unique and extremely interesting, so tl;rd — I definitely recommend it. However, do not be fooled — the new SOMA it isn't. THE BRILLIANT 1. Many walking sims deal with memories, dreams, and other types of mindscapes. However, this is the first game I've played that faithfully tries to recreate memories as a neural network would. The vast majority of games of this type create metaphoric spaces that symbolize the…

Puzzles can be confusing. Great character development. Fantastic voice actors. I was in love with this game at the start, but it went downhill for me as I played. I'm just BARELY not recommending it, but if you find yourself intrigued by the premise and gameplay, it might still be worth playing. In The Signifier, you play as Frederick Russell, a scientist who is using AI technology to recreate memories (objective and subjective) from people's minds, as well as dreams they've had. You're tasked with helping to solve a murder (or was it a suicide?) by researching the…

The rundown: Pros: + First half of the story + Really cool visual direction Cons: - Latter half of the story - Game-breaking bugs. - Numerous technical issues We get quite a few of these psychological thriller walking sims each year. A lot of them bank on their visuals while slacking on the story. Rarely though, do we get a game like The Signifier, which seems to have both of those aspects on…

Psychological horror with interesting story and puzzles that got me thinking for once. The game has several technical issues that are hard to ignore, I had to reload the save a few times but luckily I didn't lose much progress. The plot starts off good but later becomes dull and the ending I got was rather unsatisfactory. It kinda sucks that you need to replay the game multiple times to get different endings. IMO, it's not that type of game that should have so many choices, first playthrough is…

Dont play it if you get dizzy/motionsick or headaches easily its awful in that aspect, if you still decide to then take a ton of breaks. Story itself is fairly okay, i dont think its super memorable to be fair. Wish there was a neutral rating. If you into these types of games go for it. But really wasnt for me.

As a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, I can honestly say this game is the best attempt I have seen of picturing how our unconscious would look like if explored through virtual reality. In an era where most AAA videogames try to be photo-realistic, this game boldly tries to be cognitive-realistic, distorting what we see in the screen (memories and perceptions) according to our biases and limitations. Even better, it does it not only telling a gripping and believable story about trauma,…

Be the ultimate voyeur detective by exploring 3D CGI recreations of memories with the help of advanced AI. A little slow to start but the story just got more and more intriguing as it went, continuously pushing me to the edge of my seat. Exploring the memories was so creepy and fascinating at the same time, and the work you do outside the memories did well to give context. The path of dread and helplessness you have to walk down at times felt like necessary obstacles on the way to finding…

If you loved Heavy Rain or Observer, this game is for you. While a playthrough takes roughly 3 hours, as you can see I've spent far more time in this world than that. An excellent, near-future sci-fi mystery that only becomes more compelling the more you discover. There are few things I can say without spoiling some aspect of the game, so I will say this: The Signifier is the only game/media/anything I've been thinking about or playing for the past 3 days, and I still feel like I haven't…

The game concept is very good, first hours of game too. The second half is the problem. The endings are pure meme with developers showing total disrespect with players. The Signifier is a first-person psychological sci-fi adventure game with amazing worldbuilding, intriguingly surrealistic "memories" to walk around in, and incredibly shoddy programming that may completely bork your progress unless you go several saves back. You play an independent scientist who has developed a technology to read a person's memories out of their brain and turn them into a virtual 3D world that you can enter, walk around in, and interact with. Final review (comment allowed!) This is a [url=https://steamcommunity.com/groups/walkingsimulator]walking simulator with a detective angle similar to "The Painscreek Killings". Based on our current understanding of technology, it offer a story rich with IRL podcasts, lots of meta including reference to real-life tech gurus, companies, products and services (Alexa, etc) placed around its relatively small set of locations. Disapointingly, the premise is marred by with one of the clunkiest…

As much as I think this is a good game with a great story but I just cannot recommend people to buy it. It is a good investigative story. There are few puzzles you need to solve, and all are doable. However the technical issues such as crashs, falling through levels, too few autosave points are a real pain. I cannot end chapter 4 (club "Kinkyhaven") It keeps crashing when I'm done with chapter 4 and want to return to the lab. I've played it over and over again but when it is loading chapter 5,…

It's hard to appreciate a game when you can't reach the ending. I'm stuck in endless glitch loops—freezing, crashing, quitting. And since there's no manual save option, there's nothing I can do about it. I'm stuck at the second version of the death scene, where you're supposed to learn what happened. But every time I try to move through time to reach the character's death, the game freezes. I've tried 15 times, and it crashes every single time. I could overlook some bugs—like clipping issues…

So much to love and admire about "The Signifier Director's Cut". As a story-driven,puzzle-based game, it's one of the most mature ones I've played in a very, very long time. It asks that kind of question that you find in reallly thought-provoking and well-understood sci-fi. Consequently, it scares you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with an ocean of possibilities you would have never thought of. Some parts are great, some are terrible. Navegating the levels is a pain in the ass, I spent 20 extra minutes searching around to place the "key thingy" because the objective wasn't clear. Some of the dialouge and psychological interpretations are shallow and annoying. I liked the beginning because the objective was simple, find out how somebody was murdered. The second part, where you analyze the victim's childhood memories, is where it took a nose dive. The photo-memory parts of the game feel…

Visually stunning but narratively confusing, the mechanics need updating. I rate this game negatively because it leaves too many questions unanswered. The game starts off with mind-blowing concepts. Player is asked to take a look at a suicide case using advanced AI technology, which can reconstruct past events from memories and help understand what has happened. In this case, since the person who died was under intense pressure, making it impossible for the AI to fully restore the scene alone,…

Anyone into psychological horror/mystery should give The Signifier a shot. It truly is a one of a kind experience. To be clear this is not a horror game, although it does have some scary/unnerving elements. I did not enjoy this game as much after I reached 1.5 hour mark, the graphics and voice acting is a mediocre at best but doesn't take away from the game that much how ever the gameplay is by far the worst part of it and as someone who likes gameplay oriented games I don't like this and sadly most Indie horror games are very similar to this like Observer, Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and more where you just walk around solve puzzles hide or run. I'm sorry to say I cannot recommend this. The premise is absolutely amazing, but very poorly implemented. The story starts interesting and ends horribly bland and "do-gooder", with overused themes and a boring plot twist, if you can even consider it as such. Some scenes are unskippable and unnecessarily long, which reduces the time you actually want to spend doing what this game does best: the memories. If only the developers were a bit less full of themselves and actually tried to playtest…

this game is trippy and fun if you like detective-like games. it reminds me of games like Observer. my only criticism of this game is that the mechanics/systems are a bit tough to get a hold of and aren't explained great. there were more than a few times where i had no clue what to do and even the games 'hints' didn't help. overall a good game about the effect of AI on society.

It's not really a game in my opinion, it's more a wonderful artwork they have created. Never played something like this. It's completly out of every norm. Everything within the game feels realistic, if it would be able to recover memories from a brain. I enjoy the game with every breath. I've played a good number of games that play on the concept of being able to walk around or view the memories of others, dead and alive, and while I love the concept, I really never found one I truly liked at the core. The experience felt too "polished", if that makes sense? I didn't feel immersed or convinced that it wasn't just a stage show in video game form because it was all far too clean. Memories are very foggy, complicated things. The Signifier is the first time I played a game with…

The following is based on the original, not the directors cut, might come back for an update later. One of the most interesting and thought provoking games I've played in a long time. It's not a walking simulator as some people seem to think, you'll need to carefully consider the things you've seen and heard to be able to solve the puzzles and progress towards one of the multiple endings. Time for honesty: that was in some ways not as cool, and in other ways cooler, than what I was expecting. It's a little weird to review because in some ways I feel let down from what I thought the experience would be, and in others I was pretty into it. The reason it gets an easy 'recommend' from me is just how beautiful everything was rendered: in 'reality,' you can kinda tell it's a video game (if a video game animated with love), but in the 'Dreamwalker,' in the memories and dreams, it's…

To me, the game is all about complex story that revolves around ever so fast-evolving technology and what moral dilemmas it can bring into our everyday lives. I honestly enjoyed this game, despite the lack of QA. There's a lot of bugs, typos, overlapping subtitles, graphical glitches (not talking about the more surreal scenes — the real world is glitching as well), I fell through textures more than once, the endgame can be easily bugged by activating an object that the developer didn't anticipate you would activate. You could say it's kinda rough, and that's the Director's Cut edition — I'm so glad I haven't picked it up earlier! Because despite…

Runs fine on Steam Deck on high setting when set to 30FPS and looks gorgeous. Mind data visualization reminds me of my 3D scanning days. Camera movement is a bit clunky at times when inspecting objects - the animation takes too long until control is enabled again. Also, camera control with right stick could use a sensitivity slider, too slow for my taste the way it is right now. Wonderful visuals and a nice story. The gameplay is pretty barebone, making this game closer to a walking simulator than an investigative game. The theme is extremely interesting and the narration is very compelling; unfortunately, though often the case, the endings are the weakest point of the game. Without any spoiler, it can simply be said that the writers did not want to fully commit in writing any ending. Overall an ok experience, but not a fantastic one.

Conceptually very interesting, I found the story to be compelling. I noticed some spelling mistakes and the occasional glitchy sound. Some of the 3D animation was a trifle off as well. It's not a very lengthy story with little replay factor. With that out of the way, the art direction was really good and there a was a strong visual element. The Signifier as a puzzle game is quiet fun, however it tends to devolve into a walking simulator... not the best walking simulator. Generally, walking sims require two things to be good: good graphics and a good story. The Signifier has a generally well-structured story but the graphics feel... a bit off.
