Mirrors & reflections are a reoccurring theme as the upper crust Fox begins his moral descent. Robert Maugham's 1948 novella on which the film is based is even more harrowing

Starring Dirk Bogarde, Sarah Miles, Wendy Craig, and James Fox. The film is about the psychological relationships among the four central characters and social class.

unlabelledView post →Now watching: ‘The Servant’, dir. Joseph Losey, 1963. Bogarde doing a rather effective flat Northern accent. 🎥🎬

unlabelledView post →Thank you! Not every film he made was a masterpiece - he hated being under contract to Rank - but the good work is VERY good as ‘im indoors will agree. You must watch Victim. He and it are startling. And Providence is marvellous with an incredible cast. And The Servant, screenplay by Pinter.

unlabelledView post →Remembering Joseph Losey, unsung & award-winning film and theatre director, producer, and screenwriter, on his 117th birthday, seen here with Sarah Miles and Dirk Bogarde on the set of THE SERVANT (1963). He was #BOTD on 1/14/1909 and sadly passed away at age 75 on 6/22/1984.
unlabelledView post →The @monorailmusic.bsky.social Film Club years were fun and always threw up interesting combinations. The Servant screening was a busy one from what remember!
unlabelledView post →Pinter’s film scripts are something else. The Quiller Memorandum is another great example. And The Servant, of course. Can’t wait to see this.
unlabelledView post →gah I love this movie (The Servant, 1963)
unlabelledView post →Hey, speaking of PARASITE, you know what movie really holds up? THE SERVANT (1963).
unlabelledView post →There are people who say that Accident is the best of the Joseph Losey / Harold Pinter collaborations. I disagree - for me that is The Servant. But if people think this is better than a film as great as The Servant, it must be worth watching.
unlabelledView post →While I’m promoting stuff: I wrote about Wim Wenders’ latest film, Perfect Days, for the new issue of The Servant. Grab a free copy from @beyondvideo.bsky.social or Normal's Books & Records in Baltimore!

unlabelledView post →I absolutely adore this movie (The Servant 1963). The one that got me hooked on Dirk. It's just one gorgeous shot after another. Sarah Miles is no slouch either (and did a movie with Stamp around the same time, where she played a high school girl)
unlabelledView post →just finished The Servant (1963). James Fox took a decade-long break from acting because of filming Performance (1970). which is the only other film I've seen him in, but goddamn if they're all like this i wonder he lasted so long
unlabelledView post →Great film. Cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, who also did many Elstree comedies, plus Ludwig II, The Servant, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Boom!, The Lion in Winter, The Italian Job, The Music Lovers, Jesus Christ Supertar ... Amazing how the films you love join up with a few creatives!
unlabelledView post →She acknowledges that one of its main inspirations is The Servant, one of the most terrifying & mysterious examinations of class & sexual power out there. To turn that into a movie that is so shallow, explanatory, sentimental, & seemingly uncontrolled is... a lot.
unlabelledView post →Five favourite Black-and-white Films Made in 1960 or later. The League of Gentlemen Two Way Stretch The Servant This Sporting Life The Spy Who Came In From the Cold I've limited myself to British films before 1968 as that's my standard "find a random film to watch" constraint.
unlabelledView post →Possibly my favourite Bogarde performance, alongside THE SERVANT. It’s such an interesting film…
unlabelledView post →“The Servant” (1963), good film
unlabelledView post →Definitely worth it chaps. A great, great film and imo, Losey’s best (maybe tied with The Servant).
unlabelledView post →name an underrated film. The Servant (1963). Fascinating character study, plus what is possibly the best framing/blocking I've seen in a movie. It's weird to say, but the placements of characters onscreen give every single shot a real punch. Also about as gay as they'd let a movie be in 1963.
unlabelledView post →It’s a tight call between this and The Servant for my favourite Losey film. Delon’s best screen performance for me.
unlabelledView post →Have you access to Talking Pictures TV channel? Accident has been on a couple of times and I think it’s on their catch up service too. It’s a brilliant film. I agree with Chris on The Servant & Mr Klein. That Losey, Bogarde, Pinter triumvirate is cinema perfection 👌

unlabelledView post →She included it on several public lists of references. However no one assigned to cover the film seems to have seen THE SERVANT and so no mention was ever made of their similarities. Huge missed opportunity to have asked some great filmmaking questions, especially ones female directors rarely get.

Also go watch the Servant. gay psycho-sexual movie thats class warfare. Horny as hell and beautifully shot if you watch one movie on my list. Make it that one.
unlabelledView post →Are you suggesting "The Servant" - the Bogarde & Fox film - vibes 🤔 😱
unlabelledView post →His screenplays of other people’s work are a different matter of course: The Servant, The Quiller Memorandum, The Pumpkin Eater and the superb The Go-Between which is that rarity: a great film of a great book. 2/2

unlabelledView post →@geminicollision.bsky.social thoughts on The Servant? I had no idea how much Dirk shaped that film, from recommending James Fox from seeing him on tv to being Losey's proxy when he had pneumonia the blu ray is so good
unlabelledView post →The Servant is a terrific film, as is 1971's The Go-Between. Just two from a fine body of work.
unlabelledView post →The film "The Servant" with Dirk Bogarde is so creepy but somehow... it's not horror. #filmsky
unlabelledView post →Watching The Servant for the first time and realising how much of Reece Shearsmith's career has been spent channeling Bogarde in this film.
unlabelledView post →lovely as it was to watch Bogarde in colour for 2 hours, the Pinter script was hard going. Vivien Merchant was the only one who said anything normal (wandered in from another film?) and the French actresses werent allowed to speak! Compares poorly to The Servant & the GoBetween #Losey

unlabelledView post →Emerald Fennell wasn't trying to give away the ending to her film with a shot from THE SERVANT. She did it for fun, counting on the fact that audiences wouldn't be familiar with her reference. And since not one press outlet that interviewed her mention any similarities, it's safe to say she's right.

unlabelledView post →Ah, I see he also did THE SERVANT, which features more stairs (nb: I can't watch this film; I saw it once and it made me so anxious that I don't think I can ever see it again). Also TASTE OF FEAR, which is a spooky one.
unlabelledView post →btw I'm absolutely engrossed in this film, fyi The Servant is another incredible movie from that time which I'm only now just recalling...
unlabelledView post →Losey’s THE SERVANT (1963), the 1st X film I ever saw. I was under-age for an X. A major effect on me, but I believe it is still one of the most creatively insidious films, ever made. unlabelledView post →I was thinking about the Servant (also The Informers and Girl in the Headlines which I just watched), and arguably it could be earlier. The post-War British crime film probably didn't stretch quite as far as I am thinking, but they do share a kind of depressed air that makes it hard to draw a line.
unlabelledView post →Dirk Bogarde, March 28, 1921, West Hampstead, London, England - May 8, 1999, Chelsea, London, England. He was a stage, film, and a TV actor winning the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in "The Servant" 1963 and for "Darling" in 1965.
unlabelledView post →For those looking beyond his astonishing performances in VICTIM and, more so, in THE SERVANT, try another Joseph Losey, KING AND COUNTRY. The film is gritty and fearless - one of Losey’s and Bogard’s best - plus Tom Courtenay is terrific as a shellshocked WWI soldier who just starts walking home…
unlabelledView post →I‘ve wanted to see Performance for a while but it has always eluded me whenever & wherever I searched for it. I don’t know much about Fox’s career (though i do know he was in The Servant with Bogarde) but remember him from an Arthur Penn movie I saw a couple of times when I was a kid, The Chase.
