unlabelledView post →Windsor is fantastic in this film and the cinematography is amazing. The cinematographer for The Narrow Margin was George E. Diskant. His work included They Live by Night (1949). Fantastic #TCMParty #TheNarrowMargin #SUTS
unlabelledView post →They Live by Night (1948) #filmnoir directed by Nicholas Ray in his debut and starring Cathy O'Donnell and Farley Granger. Although the film is considered the prototype for the "couple on the run" genre, the story was first depicted in Fritz Lang's '37 film You Only Live Once. 🎄📽️
unlabelledView post →Live By Night (2016) didn’t do well at the box office but no film captures 1920s Ybor City (and what came to be Tampa) like this. It’s a flawed film but Affleck directs the shit out if it.

Faves: They Live by Night (1948), In a Lonely Place (1950), Johnny Guitar (1954), Rebel Without A Cause (1955), and later films with Wim Wenders. More: alt text
unlabelledView post →They Live by Night (1948) was the first film to have a tracking shot from a helicopter. Insane that Ray requested to do a chase sequence to open the film and then state it needs to be a tracking shot from a helicopter. Glad the producer had faith in Ray's vision cause its so cool.

unlabelledView post →watched LIVE BY NIGHT on the plane last night, and the absence of wifi meant i a) thought it was just a new movie i'd never heard of, and b) based on its meandering plot, was a biopic neither was true!
unlabelledView post →Live by Night. No movie so perfectly captures early 20th century Florida like this one.

unlabelledView post →Happy #FilmNoirValentine Day 💌 "They Live By Night" (1948) An immense film. Farley Granger as Bowie, and Cathy O’Donnell as Keechie. Directed by Nicholas Ray, is a film noir that tells the story of two young lovers caught in a world of crime and violence #FilmNoir #FilmSky 📽️
unlabelledView post →DRUGSTORE COWBOY: Obviously a totem for the indie explosion of the early ‘90s but just like the New Hollywood films from the previous generation Van Sant fuses the cinema of the past, borrowing from ‘40s noir like THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, with the jittery pastoral this film lives in. Really good stuff.

They Live by Night (1948) was his 1st film, & it already had his full attention: 2 young people destroyed by a world that had decided what they were worth p 1 #NicholasRay #FilmSky
unlabelledView post →Every single movie he's directed has been really, really good - Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Argo, Air (I haven't seen Live by Night, the only one I heard was pretty blah) - looking forward to #Animals coming out this year
unlabelledView post →Like Dwayne Johnson's "Ballers" and the movie "Live By Night" that were either filming in Florida or planning to. It was stupid. And then all the good trades people moved to Atlanta, so there's no infrastructure left either.
unlabelledView post →The details he told me over a few cocktails: After boxing he was in financials in NY. 9/11 happened and a friend of his offered him a place to work in Georgia as heading up a pizza restaurant. He was in the movie Ben Affleck’s “Live By Night.” (I just learned that! Need to see it.)
unlabelledView post →So many good ones!! Definitely MYSTIC RIVER is high on my list, but the 6 books of the Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro PI series are also REALLY good. (Gone Baby, Gone made it to a film.) I liked LIVE BY NIGHT a lot too (also made into a film).

unlabelledView post →The Bat People (a/k/a They Live by Night): The problem with a horror movie where a bunch of bats attack a guy en masse is when you get their little faces in closeup, they're pretty cute. "Hi, I'm Batsy! Let's play!" The two leads have Big Chemistry so I'm not shocked they're a long-married couple.

unlabelledView post →It’s so good. The whole film looks stunning. I feel like I could barely breathe during the whole climax scene on the stairs. Absolute sicko shit. Ray has become an all timer director for me. Bigger Than Life, In A Lonely Place, They Live By Night, On Dangerous Ground. All masterpieces.

Terrific script, a great lead performance from Sara Lee Wade and some key scenes filmed without permission at Disneyland - "Blonde Death" is a rollicking good time.
unlabelledView post →It was actually Ray's first film, but didn't get released until after They Live By Night. Still managed to predate the two big showbiz noirs, Sunset Boulevard and Ray's own In A Lonely Place (also starring Gloria Grahame), by a year. Funny how they cluster together like that.

unlabelledView post →LIVE BY NIGHT is very much the kind of movie that I don’t typically enjoy, and while I don’t think it’s all bad, enjoy it I did not. Not super interested in the time period and the movie also doesn’t feel super focused in what it wants the audience to feel. I do like Affleck a lot though #FilmSky

Tom Hardy is superb James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) even better in his last screen role iirc and probably his best in a feature
