Ugetsu
In 16th century Japan, peasants Genjuro and Tobei sell their earthenware pots to a group of soldiers in a nearby village, in defiance of a local sage's warning against seeking to profit from warfare. Genjuro's pursuit of both riches and the mysterious Lady Wakasa, as well as Tobei's desire to become a samurai, run the risk of destroying both themselves and their wives, Miyagi and Ohama. From TMDB

neutral · AI labelView post →Stoked for the upcoming Japanese horror celebration at Film Forum. My personal faves in the series are Kuroneko (1968), Ugetsu (1953), A Page of Madness (1926), Blind Woman's Curse (1970), and Audition (1999). Particularly hoping to catch Demon Pond (1979), which I've never seen before.

neutral · AI labelView post →UGETSU (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1953, rewatch). Wonderful to see this beguiling blend of supernatural ghost story & crushing morality tale on the big screen. A beautiful, brutal exploration of how man’s pursuit of greed & glory at the expense of family loyalty will inevitably lead to his undoing. #FilmSky

neutral · AI labelView post →Ugetsu was really enjoyable. Quite interesting seeing the similarities between it and the Bride of Hades film. I’m not too familiar with Ueda Akinari’s ghost stories (kaidan) of which this was based.

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm a sucker for a specific type of mysterious, moody, and unsettling setting and subject. Magnetic Rose has it, Fragile Dreams has it, Another Code has it. Ugetsu Kitan had it in spades. Finally bit when @macaw45.bsky.social brought up the Backrooms film, as silly as that is. That guy never misses.

As in "They were dead the whole time!" The medieval Japan wartime setting is used as a metaphor. #Filmsky 📽️

I watched the GREAT Aquarius, from Kleber Mendença Filho, Breathless and Pierrot le Fou were my first Jean-Luc Godard films, I really enjoyed them. unlabelledView post →There's a line at the end of Ugetsu 1953 where the potter's apprentice's wife admonishes him after he spends half the film galavanting around as a samurai commander and brings his wife to ruin: "You are so stupid that you only learn through misfortune!" This is the US right now.

unlabelledView post →Ugetsu gives me that *exact* same vibe, I credit both for making me realize that Japanese golden age film is more than just binging Kurosawa movies (as much as I love doing that lol)
unlabelledView post →finally got around to watching UGETSU. it jumps so seamlessly between reality and fantasy, and effortlessly executes some really technical filmmaking, that it kind of snuck up on me and not all of it registered until the movie was over. there’s a good reason this film is so revered—everything from the camera work to the score to its progressive-for-the-time messages about society’s treatment of women. check it out if you can! #film #cinema #ugetsu #mizoguchi

unlabelledView post →Once in college I watched a classic Japanese film (possibly Ugetsu Monogatari), late night, sitting on a hard bench in a room with no rake, which made the subtitles (and hence the plot) impossible to follow. That's the second most bored I've ever been at the cinema.
unlabelledView post →18) I'm probably gonna come off hipster af with this one, but Ugetsu Monogatari is probably my favorite all-time Japanese movie. Beautifully shot, haunting story, incredibly somber ending. It almost made me want to put Kurosawa in the Overrated segment but even I know that'd be TOO pretentious lol

unlabelledView post →At the Charles Theater two bros came in Star Wars shirts for a screening of Return of the Jedi but whoops! One week off. That night’s actual movie was the somber Ugetsu. They were good sports and stayed for the whole thing. Left as devastated as the rest of us. Art conquers all etc…

unlabelledView post →Friend hosted a 1953 movie fest over the weekend. I'd seen Stalag 17 in middle school, The Hitch-Hiker 2x in theaters, and scenes of Mogambo on TCM but the rest were new to me. Everyone loved Stalag, Ugetsu was No. 2 and we thought From Here was WAY overrated (though everyone in it was gorgeous).
unlabelledView post →Both are extremely moving as well as gorgeous to look at. Life of Oharu fits in there as well. Ugetsu, for me, is close to the movie medium at its most flawless and exquisite.
