The Hungry Fly
Developer Erupting Avocado
Once upon a time, there was a fly. A hungry fly. A fly with razor-sharp teeth, with a taste for dead things. This is the tale of its adventure to find something dead to devour, in a swamp where nothing dies, everything is grotesque, and every choice matters, no matter how surreal. From the Steam store page

What people are saying
A surreal, disturbing horror game that polarizes players.
Many players praise the game's unique atmosphere and artistic ambition, calling it a 'mindf**k fever dream' and 'art.' The retro PSX style and sound design are frequently highlighted as strengths. [3][6][13]
However, some critics find it boring or confusing, describing it as 'strange just for the sake of being strange' with 'dream logic' that feels pointless. A few also report extreme motion sickness. [33][36][34]

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a mindf**k fever dream that asks players to follow their most unhinged thoughts. I seriously love this game. It's a hidden gem for body horror. If you like A Bug's Life and the game Grounded, you'll love this game. Also, the fly has pitter patter feet sounds when it walks. I walked places just to hear that cozy sound.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You are a fly, feeding on dead things, but there’s nothing dead in this strange world. Hungry, you decide to enter a twisted Mario-style piranha plant and consume the memories of a mysterious being. The more memories you consume, the more you absorb their essence and yearn to know more, driven by your insatiable hunger—much like your curiosity as a player. This game, very different from Repairing Mantis, compels the player to take their time. You’ll navigate a polluted swamp, pausing to clean…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No. I hate leaving a bad review, especially for an indie game, but I just found this extremely boring. I had absolutely no idea what was happening story-wise or message-wise - if there even was one here at all. Being weird for the sake of being weird isn't always necessarily a good thing The only reason I finished it was to get 100% completion for the achievements since I had got it in a bundle with other games. It's NOT worth $10; in terms of content, it only takes about two hours to see…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love dark and eerie games they have a unique charm. And I love arthropods even more. Becoming a fly, even for a short while, was quite amusing. As for the game itself, the first playthrough was the most engaging. The game is highly abstract, ultimately about loneliness, death, and rebirth. Earning all the achievements feels somewhat drawn out, as you have to go through the same repetitive sections multiple times. I can recommend it if what I described resonates with you. Otherwise, it might…

unlabelledView post →I usually like these types of games, but it's very hard to recommend this. It's just not very scary, or fun to play. Just kind of a slog. The premise starts out interesting, but quickly devolves into random dream logic, ultimately makes everything that happens feel pointless. I can't say it's a bad game. Not the worst way to spend an hour (the time it takes to finish the game), but not exactly riveting either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The kind of game that can have hundreds of interpretations where none will feel forced or far-fetched. When I think of shock value, this is the kind of thing that I want. It's disturbing and purposefully cruel, because it means to tell you something. To show you something. The disgust and discomfort of the player is converted into something meaningful and the game does it organically and without shutting down too many different angles. I despise pointless shock (*cough* my eyes deceive…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing video games for 30 years and I've never gotten motion sickness. I've played the extremely fast FPS games with crazy movement, the weird stuff like Cruelty Squad, and other visually challenging titles. This game gave me extreme, intense motion sickness within about 10 minutes. I tried all of the provided settings to try and keep playing, but I had to lie down afterwards. It's probably a cool game, and I enjoyed what I saw, but this review just serves as a warning to anyone that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Hungry Fly isn't BAD, but it's the kind of game that's strange just for the sake of being strange. Nothing you do is particularly interesting, and the narrative, if you can call it that, is basically just dream logic. Everything is arbitrary, nothing really makes any sense. So although it's not a horrible experience or anything, I can't recommend playing it either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →games like this one never fail to amaze me. is it weird? oh absolutely. but will you keep thinking about it? for sure. to put it simply: this is art. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short and surreal, steeped in what I assume to be metaphor, though for what I'm not entirely sure. I liked it largely for the PS1 aesthetic and being brave enough to be uncompromising in its themes. I only got endings 1 and 3, and didn't really feel like trying to work out what the missing ending was, but otherwise I enjoyed my time with it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PLEASE READ THE DEV'S DECRIPTION AND TRIGGER WARNINGS I'm no stranger to eff'ed up horror, body horror, or surrealism in games. I'm weird that way. But Erupting Acocado is *weirder*. This game is fantastic, in every possible sense of the word, but, boy, oh boy... I knew I needed to play it when I discovered the demo on the HauntedPS1 Demo Disc, but that demo does not prepare you for the game proper. It's short, but highly replayable, choices matter, it has multiple endings. And I will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This made my depression worse. 5/5.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This seems to just be a weird, messed up game for the sake of being a weird messed up game. I'm all down to play thematic games without much going for them, but I don't even understand what the message is here so it feels kind of pointless, like a kind of gratuitous nightmare game. I don't recommend this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really loved this game, so much! Was very hungry to find out more of the story haha Absolutely admire how well the graphics are made, music is good, eerie and the vibes are nailed so well! The game scratched the right spot in my brain, made me feel something and was worth the price of hard work It is weird, but in a good way. Horror parts are made well. I usually get motion sickness on certain games, but after a while it disappeared, was worth it imo. And I played on normal mode Shortish,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A creepy, thought-provoking, bite-sized psychological horror packaged neatly in a retro PSX style. Give it a try!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot get over how good this art style and music work so well for this creepy little game. There's always something lying in under the surface and once you start scrubbing, the more you scrub the more traumatized you'll become. I highly recommend you go into this game blind if you could. I did manage to get all three endings I want to go back and get the worse possible ending at some point. https://youtu.be/DkoekVi293E?si=7l2FUdmdfNibmbRL
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's... pretty? I dunno. It's great, makes you feel a bit gross which is great, I ended up liking the characters of course, and it seemed at first to have a really nice metaphore, but after 100%ing (which I did in 2 hours), I just sort of ended up more confused. I would never pay $15 for this game, as it's very short and pretty much just a 30 min story, but if you can get it on sale and the idea interests you, do go for it. I was attracted by the reviews, but I think it's wildly overrated. by…

unlabelledView post →The Hungry Fly, developed by Erupting Avocado and published by indie.io, is a surreal horror experience that eschews traditional gameplay conventions in favor of atmosphere, symbolism, and existential unease. Set in a nightmarish swamp world that feels both organic and purgatorial, the game follows a grotesque fly—half-insect, half-abomination—on a desperate search for sustenance in a place where death no longer functions. The premise sounds deceptively simple, yet what unfolds is a deeply…

unlabelledView post →If you liked Faith, you'll also like The Hungry Fly. It's very much a horror game for adults, with a dream-like environment absolutely rife with metaphor. It's short, but multiple endings and branching paths give you ample reason to play again. Actually, you'll likely want to play through it multiple times just to figure out what's really happening.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ok this is weird af, i'll never take a bath again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a short and not very sweet game that i really enjoyed! i kind of adore the mechanics in this game- from the movement of the fly to some later segments of the game that i won't spoil, it all feels innovative and immersive. i'm not quite sure how to describe it, but this game's best trait is its 'feel'. if you're a fan of surreal psychological horror, maybe give this game a shot :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a masterpiece. I knew it was going to be rich narratively speaking and I must say that I was still surprised! So many unanswered questions… I will replay to see the other possible endings. I strongly advise you to play it! You will be about to live a unique experience! I don't want to spoil, but the music is incredible, some mechanics are rarely seen in video games and I didn't think being a fly would be so immersive… Give yourself a gift by playing this marvel, you won't regret…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well that was weird and messed up...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like the repairing mantis, this game is completely different from anything I've ever played. It's really a shame that the level of this developer is not acknowledged properly. Especially with this game, where the story is much more concrete and complex than the previous game. I really hope to see more of this universe, because so far it has been an astonishing experience. If someone is reading this, you have to play it, and you won't regret it...... well, at least not in the way you think
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this game is pretty cool, but I have to give it a bad review, because the game called me a complete monster when i got the bad ending, even though I just did whatever a FLY would do. Flies don't have feelings, silly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i have to be honest, by the time i was done with this game i had no idea what i just played, it is so damn obvious this game is a metaphor for *something* but i really cant quite put togheter what i saw or what any of it meant, its definetly one of those cases where i will only understand it after watching like a billion videos with all that said tho, i cannot lie and say the experience i went through wasnt absolutely fascinating and wild
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and i dont feel good about myself
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An interesting surreal horror game about being a fly looking for dead things to eat. Though a playthrough can be completed in under 1.5 hours, the game has multiple endings and is worth replaying. The game has a fantastic retro-inspired visual style and great sound design. I love any game presented through unusual perspectives such as that of the fly, and these mechanics as well as others feel smooth and intuitive. Although I didn't use it, there is a setting to prevent motion sickness,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →what the ... did i just play? gameplay is minimal and nothing to write home about. but it is a very short (took me 55 min) surreal disturbing experience, which is recommended for those who are up to experiencing what indie releases are made for.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Weird and atmospheric game where you eat stuff as a fly. A bit short, but has a lot of character. I recommend it. I'm a sucker for anything with that PSX look and the movement feels good, so I was pretty sold in like the first 5 minutes. Gameplay is mostly you flying, well, a fly and eating stuff. It's simple, but services the story. The story itself is the meat of the main game, so keep that in mind if you were instead hoping to play as a fly eating things for hours lol. It's very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doing this game justice using only words is a challenge. It is an experience that is best lived. That being said, the attention to detail in this game is remarkable. It is a fascinating world that keeps you coming back for more. I highly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A peculiar atmosphere that's cute, disgusting, funny and creepy all at the same time. I feel like I've entered a very strange mysterious world governed by its own unique logic. You won't regret buying it, it feels like nothing else.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really disturbing and abstract horrorgame. The game is pretty disturbing and deals with a lot of traumatic and disturbing themes, similar to The Repairing Mantis, while also having a pretty complex story. I really love the style of this developer and I hope they make more games like this. Even though I found The Hungry Fly a bit weaker than the previous game, I still really enjoyed it and think it's a really interesting piece of horror.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely blown away by how good this game is. I haven't had a game speak to me like this is a while. Highly highly recommend. Definitely gonna play more and try to get the other endings.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Video games are art!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game explores the idea that in a world where nothing dies (i.e. Heaven), only memories are truly dead. This got me thinking that when the Rapture finally arrives, the ascended would have to rot away their memories to fully enjoy the eternal life. I believe the true choice between Heaven and Hell will then be whether to sacrifice memories of one's self or not. An excellent eschatological observation! Technical details: Proton Experimental, 2ish hours to 100%. Edit: typos.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →thoroughly strange.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A mechanically simple yet extremely eerie first-person adventure game where your personal choices leave a lasting and noticeable impression on the narrative as a whole. I like it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A disgusting game with a hard hitting message that you never really see! Definitely a recommend if you like to be confused in a surreal world where nothing makes sense, but it really all does!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game with an interesting art style, overall amazing but the one thing that i'd say is a bit tedious is going for all the endings since there are no checkpoints or anything of that sort, a large part of the game is just pure dialogue with no interactivity (which considering the enthralling visuals and setting doesn't make the game bad in my eyes) the big choices are a just a couple of concentrated moments that you need to sit through said dialogue to get to. All that being said the game is…

Great little story that makes you think about a lot of things and reflect on others. Game ran well and has motion sickness support, arachnophobia mode, and multiple endings.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After Playing Both The Repairing Mantis And The Hungry Fly after a 3 year wait since the demo just for this game to fully release and, after watching the demo from 3 years ago, both The Repairing Mantis And The Hungry Fly take anywhere between 3-4 playthroughs to get all paths and endings unlocked. I can't really understand the plot of The Hungry Fly, i can definitely say for certain that The Repairing Mantis when compared and contrasted with The Hungry Fly was darker and with more gore even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unique, and absolutely strange experience (roughly 1hr per path chosen with 3 possible paths). Both the "fly" and spider mechanics were well-executed, the use of retro 3d graphics in conjunction with disturbing stylization choices make for an altogether fascinating gaming experience. Recommended to fans of games such as Mouthwashing, How Fish is Made, and Perfect Vermin (More the latter two).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"The Hungry Fly" is an exceptionally unique and short horror-experience with stellar atmosphere and writing and an nauseating first-person-view (both figuratively and literally). You play a fly with its decomposer-diet in a grotesque, shapeshifting, undying swamp finding your means of sustenance. The whole ordeal is quite visceral, appaling, existential, poetic and at some points even hilarious. As I progressed and explored the different paths it could get a little repetitive (some branches…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Considering the cost of entry, unique tone and exceptionally disturbing experience that The Hungry Fly offers: how could I not recommend it? Wholeheartedly, of course I do. If you're even remotely interested in this bizarre and grotesque exploration of some particularly dark and tragic existential themes, grab it. I think you can make what you will of this title, but something of note to me when trying to piece together what certain characters represent is which buttons/keys you use…
