As I was leaving, a couple from Colorado (who’d flown in the see the movie on the big screen) gave me their salad dressing because of the TSA. The bottles are good til November! Let’s have a salad!

unlabelledView post →I realized today that The Color of Money turns 40 in a few weeks; Newman was 61 when that film came out. When Tom Cruise was 61 (in 2023), he was promoting the Mission: Impossible film where he sailed off a cliff on a motorcycle.

unlabelledView post →Forest Whitaker is so good hustling Paul Newman in THE COLOR OF MONEY, I kept imagining a better movie where this character was doing the Tom Cruise part in the film. Which, in many ways, would’ve made it a more fitting sequel to THE HUSTLER.

unlabelledView post →The Sting (1973). A movie I can endlessly rewatch, despite knowing all the beats—which is one of the signs of a great con movie. I think this, along with The Color of Money, at an early age cemented Paul Newman as one of my favorite actors.
unlabelledView post →THE COLOR OF MONEY is very unlike the movie, and has one of the most devastating plot twists I've ever read. It's an excellent book. But THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT may be his best.

unlabelledView post →So many great performances by Forest Whittaker. I first saw him in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but i first really took notice of him in his one scene in The Color of Money. It's a terrific movie with an endless string of great performances. I might even pick it as Tom Cruise's best performance.

unlabelledView post →The Color of Money (86): Ballhaus shoots the fuck out of it, but in sequelizing Fast Eddie, Scorsese’s film is drenched in nostalgia without ever feeling musty. Well-performed across the board, but Newman is sly and wily even in emotional moments. Mary Elizabeth, owns it. Savvy production design. B+
