Sub Command
Developer Sonalysts
Sub Command, subtitled Akula Seawolf 688(I) is a submarine simulator computer game designed by Sonalysts Combat Simulations and published for Windows systems by Electronic Arts in 2001. The player commands one submarine: a United States Navy Seawolf, a Russian Navy Akula, or a 688(I). Sub Command sports three training missions, 23 single missions, and one 14 mission campaign. The campaign can be played from either… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

60 of 84 · most liked firstA leftover from a bygone era...when simulators were great. I played 688i for the first time underway onboad USS LaJolla "many" years ago, and I have to say Sonalyst did a great job. Sub Command just continued where 688i left off. To compare the graphics to a more modern game isn't fair as it was created years go. The game play however is top notch. Absolutely nothing good happens 'quickly' on a submarine. Attacks take time to prepare, you have to track and identify contacts and it isn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing 688i Hunter/Killer, I was looking forward to the sequel. To summarize: The good: 1) More features than 688i. 2) More controlable subs (Seawolf, 688i, and Akula). 3) Each sub has it's own campaign line that shares the events of the other 2 campaigns. 4) Much better tutorial, though I still don't get the manual TMA system with the dots and the ruler. 5) The Navigation Screen (Map Screen) is much better, as I can classify each target. 6) Classifying a target with sonar is much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sub Command is one of the dying breed of submarine simulations on the PC, where you command one of 3 submarines trying to accomplish various missions against various enemies while trying not to kil civilians. The graphics are not that good, but then in a sub you don't really get to look at the outside. Instead, you are looking at visual representation of sound, how to interpret sonar signals, and when to employ your weapons optimally, from cruise missiles to anti-ship missiles to torpedoes to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game I like for how fun it is to blow submarines up and try to be stealthy but I warn you this game is really complex and takes some time just to learn how to tell if something is friend or foe but int he end its always fun to make a flying torpedo hit something so try it at your own risk :). Edit due to its just a short review, long in depth (submarine joke) one below. Sub command is a complex simulation game made by the people who made Dangurous Waters,Fleet Command, and 688(I)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the sequel to Jane's 688(i) Hunter/Killer but now under the flag of Sonarlysts. Most features have already been mentioned in my review of 688(i) so I will try to tell only the difference between these two: - Higher resolution and better graphics - 3 plattforms to operate (688(i), Seawolf, Akula) - Single missions and campaigns which can be played as US or russian. - Use your voice to command your ship completely (navigation, firing at a certain contact etc.) The most important part…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the graphics are dated, this submarine warfar simulation is the real deal. Game has a lot of depth (pun intended) and there are several different mission types that offer a lot of variety in gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This simulator is confusing at first, and I thought I didn't like it, but then I actually read the manual. RTFM, guys. Once I did so, the game was fantastic and intense. There are some bugs in the campaign, but it is really good, anyway. I also reccomend Fleet Command. Pro Realistic damage and weapons and ships Sensors follow the laws of physics (mostly) The campaign is fun and engaging, even with issues It rewards skills, not just spraying torpedoes all around For 1998, graphics are quite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a great game but you would probably be crazy not to get Dangerous Waters instead. The same submarines are featured in it plus surface ships and a couple of extra years of graphical development. The subsim community tend to develop campaigns more for Dangerous Waters than the older games I would imagine anyway, but the custom downloadable third party campaigns were always great back in the day. So I do recommend it, although at the same time I recommend you get Dangerous Waters instead if…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It works in Windows 11 The interface improvements are undeniable, however the game as a whole feels inferior to the prior installment 688(I) Hunter/Killer. In 688(I) Hunter/Killer you had crew experience points, Sub upgrades, at the end of the mission you had to transmit an status report, and you also had a few live action videos. All those features are missing in this new game. The game has several issues, some of them are game design issues and other are bugs. I had the impression that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok. It’s a good OG game. But unless you are good with math like let’s say geometry, algebra, trigonometry and such you will have a very hard time playing the game because to use certain parts of the sonar you need to know these kind of things and unless you have certain things memorized for the like the frequencies of vessels then you will also have a hard time playing this. Auto crew is available for certain parts of the sub you are playing as which makes it easier but it also makes it less fun
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Sonalyst series of submarine simulators seems to be far more realistic than the arcade-ish version found in Cold Waters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a former sonar technician on several 688 class submarines, I can honestly say this is the most accurate sub game I've ever played. I used to play this while serving on board the sub back in the early 2000's. All the details like TMA, DEMON, and just basic sound propagation in water is represented pretty well here. Definitely a game I like to return to every couple of years.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good game, with some seriously well done SONAR modelling in the Sub-Sub dept., it unfortunately shows its age in occasional bugs (in campaign) and retains yester-decade's myths of how various weapons worked (No, 65-57 are not DP wire-guided; No, Shkval is not anti-submarine). All told, it is a game that is terribly overwhelming and satisfying all at once, and is worth getting alongside the other games in the Complete Naval Combat Pack if you're into submarines. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is currently broken. Errors with 'Failed to find Steam' on launch. Same thing happens with the other Sonalysts game I own, 688i. Apparently some recent Steam update has caused this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't think I can add too much more to the other reviews - I thoroughly concur that it has to steep learning curve, remains challenging even after you know what you are doing, and has really high replaybility potential if this kind of game is your type of thing. If, however, you are the kind of person who gets hot and bothered about humorous bugs every once in a blue moon, this game might not be for you. Examples include aircraft flying backward, aircraft flying at impossible altitudes (6.2k…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STARTING PLAYERS: This sub sim is a fantastic game for getting into nuclear class submarines BUT it has a steep learning curve that will take some time to learn and fully understand. Take some time to understand the game but do not get mad if it takes a few hours to start understanding. This game is worth it if you stick it out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Windows 10 64bit newest Update, works fine, without issues. Dangerous Waters should be your first choice when diving into the best navan/subsim series as it is definitely in every way superior to Sub Command. However I still recommend to get SC as it comes with exclusive high quality sub campaigns. Especially when you´re looking for more when completing the campaigns in DW. Make sure to get the SCX/SCU mod http://www.subguru.com/downloads.html you will also find the best collection of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonderful full blown simulation that comes REALLY close to real life and still keep it enjoyable. Apart from that, the campaigns are very entertaining and I just love the story behind them. It really tells these people knew what they were doing when they developed this game. It's a bit hard to grasp all the controls and the operations of the different stations of the sub, but there's a wealth of information on the net and detailed tutorial videos on YouTube. Highly recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The AI is too un-coordinated regarding ships crew for targeting etc. On auto crew or manual targeting just seems too hard. FYI I'm a FC2 Fire Controlmen, we launch the missiles and guns on sub/warships. I'm a CIWS RAM Operator. I'm a deadly killer and this sucks. I owned this game back when it first came out, I think I hate this game now. Go play Cold Water, not the same but its something modern.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super Hard Game..But still prettty darn fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great relaxing game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its THe best Sub sim on Steam! Better than Janes 688(i) and Seawolf! In fact its based on the same engines and systems! AND BETTER STILL! ITS COMPATIBALE FOR WINDOWS 10! Well it is for me! AND THERE'S AN AWESOME MISSION EDITOR TOO!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Submarine warfare simulation. You play as Captain of one of a number of subsurface platforms, and engage in missions. Enemies can also be a wider number of different surface, subsurface, and land forces. Controls are a bit tricky to learn. Suggest getting it in the bundle. At least if you are a naval warfare aficionado.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's old, clunky, and barely qualifies as 3d. It's also hyper-realistic, stressful, and both fast and slow paced. Would recommend absolutely.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, really like the realism of the simulation and the ability to create your own scenarios.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not so much a game as a second job: you can let the auto-crew do much for you but let's face facts: the appeal of this game is how much it demands from you. Want to work out the firing solution for the 89cm ADCAP torpedo manually? Of course you do, this game was written for you. The plotline (nasty Russians go to war with the USA for some reason) is not really developed - I'm halfway through the US campaign - BUT the opportunity to play the campaign from the Russians' perspective is a very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are not anything like they are today. It has graphics like minecraft. And the game has no usefull tutorial I could find . If the game did not crash on me every 5 secounds I might consider playing it but it's to unstable for me to finish a single task on any one of the modes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →BADA*S!!!! its like huntingfree-for-all!!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best of the best Sub sim.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a little late to find it, but what a nice this thing turned up to be. Nice, clean ASW simulator without all this gamey noise that most of the modern sims have. With a comprehensive 200-pages PDF manual, good reading for a weekend. And it's not like you'll read and learn just one game: most of the things you learn will be useful in the whole genre - other ASW sims and even strategy sims with submarine warfare, such as Command: MO.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10.99 is really expensive for a game that doesn't work, Won't even load, and is not supported. I installed the game and hit play, at which point it takes me out of steam and opens up a steam web site where it wants me to download steam...RETARDED. FIx your game, no one is asking you to rewrite it..just make it possible to play it, or give us instructions as to what to do to play it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun. Makes me remember good old days. Not as good as 688i or Fast Attack from Sierra, but still a jewel around here.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun, albeit initially maybe a bit daunting submarine simulator. Sonar modeling is complex and combined with target motion analysis offers endless hours of fun (although you probably have to be certain type of person to find it fun, but I digress). Not all missions are typical hunt and kill enemy submarines type of scenarios, but there's lots of variation: inserting and extracting special forces, gathering intelligence and performing rescue missions. If you get into a hot situation and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great old sub game with many extra missions you can download!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible and not worth the money!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic game! I still have to learn quite a lot but it is definetly worth it. I could spend hours using the sensors and the TMA xD
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this in a bundle deal with another game, and if I hadn't, I would neither shed tears or lose sleep over it. Might work as a nostalgic trip for someone, for all else I recommend turning a blind eye to this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Want to know how I ended up so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane? Play this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great submarine game, Highly recommend. *****
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Totally Awesome
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →thumbs up for realism, very accurate simulation
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i like sonar 'tis fun
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best of the best
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Promises a lot, but fails to deliver. The interfaces are clunky and difficult to navigate and the gameplay is frankly bizarre. The tutorials instruct you on how to use the various sonar stations but on the missions it doesn't really correlate - everything seems to be a cargo ship or tanker and often the computer assigns multiple trackers to the same ship which is just confusing. Also, you can run into mines (with no prior warning from the game), randomly get hit by a torpedo from a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game will not run on 64bit hardware.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Impossible to get it to start on Win11
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →has issues, didn't display right. why sell a game that don't work?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game don't work right can't fire a torp
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As with previous games by Sonalysts, you will have to read the manual and practice this game a bit because it has a steep learning curve. This time you can play with a RU submarine (Finally) and have a choice of 3 different submarines to play with. The game is an improvement to their first game - 688(i) Hunter Killer, but most other things are the same. When it comes to audio there is quite a bit of improvement and it is especially noticeable since you will we resorting to audio queues more.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish they made them like this still.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good simulator. Very Good in my opinion.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sub Command is the most refined underwater combat simulator from the Cold War to the end of the 20th century. After this game, several other titles were created, such as Dangerous Waters - its direct successor or, for example, Cold Waters, but none matched the atmosphere of the original. The concept of tracking enemy units with sonar, listening and radar was first used in Sub Command. There are some fantastic mods for this game. Like the SCX II - which was made available for free at:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →incredibly difficult for ME to master but it is fun trying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It no longer works! WHEN IT CAME OUT it was great, survived several operating systems evolutions, this did not function after Windows 7 PRO as a stand alone game. Time to clean-up and invent clean up with vigor, ditch what you want gone. If it doesn't work on Steam it ain't a game to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game does not like running any resolution beyond 600 x 800 and the mouse just stays in the center of the screen. Attempting to fix either of these problems just borks the whole thing up. This game is an unplayable mess. Don't waste your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old school sub game. Like Janes 688i
